A basic example of courses in the years to come….

Page 8: Freshman Parent Meeting - North Gwinnett High School · 9th Grade Counseling Overview • Support during transition to High School • Academic success skills, Social/emotional support

Levels of Coursework • College prep (CP) • Honors • Gifted – Students who have been screened and qualified for

the Gifted Program • Advanced Placement (AP) – College-level coursework taught in

high school with a national AP exam offered at the end of the year

• Teachers will register students for the next course in their subject area based on their level recommendations; students choose electives

• List of next year’s classes sent home in the spring for student/parent review and input

Students should take the most rigorous course load appropriate to them because…..

• Excellent college preparation • Colleges like to see students challenge themselves….for

example: “UGA suggests that students pursue the most rigorous curriculum appropriate to their ability levels, as grades in academic courses and curriculum difficulty are the two most important factors in first-year admission decisions.”

• Opportunity for personal growth: develop problem-solving skills, self-advocacy, confidence, personal responsibility

There’s not just one box for everyone to fit in!

• Choose courses based on students’ strengths and areas of interest • While we do encourage students to complete at

least 1 AP class during their HS career in an area of strength, the rumor that APs are required for HOPE or graduation is FALSE

• SO many options after high school….base decisions on the individual student, not what you or they have heard from friends

• Balance • Remember when looking at colleges you’re looking

at the best fit for you….not just a name
