(identify vegetation types, fire regime) [1,500 Characters Maximum]The desired outcome is to reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire through a coordinated effort of fuel reduction across private & federal lands within the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) of the Aspen Meadows & Cheney communities in NE Washington. The project area is within the Hangman Watershed Resource Inventory Area identified as a high priority landscape for fuels reduction in DNR’s Statewide Forest Resource Assessment & Strategy. The project focuses on non-federal lands prioritized in the Spokane County CWPP for fuels reduction. It complements US Fish & Wildlife projects on the adjacent Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge. This project will focus on the development of strategically located fuel breaks & defensible space treatments. These treatments will modify fire size, intensity & behavior; thereby reducing risk to lives, homes, infrastructure & natural resources. The fuel breaks will assist firefighters in fire suppression, reduce suppression cost & increase firefighter safety. Treatments will thin, prune & remove fuel ladders using chainsaws, chippers, masticators & burn piles. Landowners & local contract crews will conduct the fuels reduction treatments. Feedback from the CWPP process confirms a willingness of landowners to participate in hazardous fuel reduction. The typical fuels type is the project area consists of ponderosa pine overstory with dense Douglas fir and ponderosa pine understory. The project area consists of fire regime condition class 2 & 3.

Scope of WorkAll information for the project must fit into the space provided below. If requesting DNR Forest Health funding describe how the project addresses current tree mortality caused by a forest insect or pathogen, a current forest insect infestation or disease condition, and/or reduces the vulnerability to forest insects or pathogens such as bark beetles, defoliating caterpillars or dwarf mistletoe. (This should be more specific than the project area description) [1,500 Characters Maximum]Funds will be used to reimburse landowners for overstocked non-commercial tree thinning, pruning & slash disposal through an existing cost share program managed by the DNR. Biomass, in the form of firewood, may be removed & utilized. On favorable terrain, mastication machines may be used mulch the slash. On steeper and rocky slopes, hand pile & burning or use of chippers may be used to dispose of slash. Grant funds will support DNR foresters who will coordinate with partnering agencies, prioritize treatments, conduct outreach (promote community fire prevention/firewise education), conduct individual wildfire risk assessments, work with landowners to develop effective projects, perform compliance & monitor the project. Spokane County CWPP/LCG participants will assist in project promotion & provide technical assistance. The budget is derived from work performed on similar cost share projects & other fuels projects managed by the DNR. The project is adjacent to several planned & completed projects on US Fish & Wildlife managed lands (see map). US Fish & Wildlife contact is Doug Frederick, Turnbull AZFMO, (509) 235-6731. The project can be scaled down if less funding is available.

[500 Characters Maximum]A fuels reduction and/or cost share agreement must be signed by the landowner before any fuels treatment can occur. The Agreement contains standard language requiring the practice be maintained for a minimum of ten years which is standard for all DNR NE Region administered grants. Project compliance will be conducted by experienced DNR foresters. Random compliance checks will be completed by community fire planning partners to ensure project work is being maintained by landowners.

This information is collected to determine if there is any project income generated from grant funding. Project (Program) Income1
