An unidentified ammonia type smell, which caused burning of the eyes led to the evacuation of Boulder Creek High School on Dec. 5

At 5:40 p.m. Daisy Mountain Fire Department was called due to a smell initially coming from the school’s gym where a junior varsity girls basketball game was under way. Upon reporting to the high school crews upgraded the scene to a hazardous situation according to Dave Wilson, the Fire Department’s Public Information Officer. The entire campus was evacuated, including North Valley Regional Library. Although the Hazmat team searched the campus for a source of the odor Wilson, said nothing was found. Nobody on the campus required medical attention.

In a email sent to the student body, principal Lauren Sheahan thanked the teachers and staff who were on campus

who helped to evacuate the buildings and facilitated parent pick up of the students.

The basketball games as well as a dance concert were to be rescheduled. School went on as scheduled Thursday morning.

In his 15 years in retail, Malinconico said he’d heard of similar acts of kindness, but never witnessed it first hand.

“It’s such a great deed,” Malinconico said. “I hope he reads your paper. It’s important the message gets to him how much he’s touching lives.”

One recipient, who described herself as a struggling single parent, started crying upon hearing the news, saying she was very grateful and thankful.

And the store manager said it hasn’t simply been the beneficiaries who have been impacted.

“Once he paid their debts we call the customers to tell them they can come and pick up their merchandise,” he said. “We’ve ended up with both the customer getting the news crying and our employees sharing the news crying on the phone together. It has been a very emotional process. A very happy one.”

Upon receiving the news of the assistance one man reacted by paying for

another customer’s purchase of a bicycle.

Patty Hiner of New River said she didn’t even believe the Walmart employee that called to inform her that her merchandise had been paid for.

“I think I asked them three times if they were serious,” she said. “I had made some purchases for my two grandsons. I mean, you hear about something like that happening, but you don’t ever think it will happen to you. It’s one of those inspiring stories. It made me want to do something good. I had the money to pay for the items, but now I’m going to take the opportunity to pay it forward and help somebody else out.”

Malinconico said amongst his employees the gesture has created quite a buzz.

“What’s cool is even though there are a lot of people that are struggling, there are still good natured hearts that are willing to give,” he said.

Layaways for Christmas must be paid for by this Friday.

ANDREW RIMMERSPECIAL FOR

THE FOOTHILLS FOCUS

The Cactus Shadows Drama Club is stepping it up this year. Along with performances of Antigone and Legally Blonde, the school’s Drama Club has decided to do something called 24 Hour Theatre.

24 Hour Theatre is a unique event that, as the name describes, takes place over 24 hours. Students come together as writers, directors, actors, and technicians to create completely original one-act plays. The event is set for 7 p.m., Saturday in the Cactus Shadows Fine Arts Center.

The first four hours start off with all of the staff writers working on their plays. The next segment is composed of the directors choosing their cast, props, and set pieces. Lastly, the actors and technicians assemble to rehearse and work on lights and sound.

“There will probably be six playwrights, each creating a ten minute play. That means there will also be ten directors, ten casts, and so on,” said Andrew Cupo, head of the

Drama Department at Cactus Shadows High School.

All of the six ten-minute plays will be performed in one show at the end of 24 hours.

“It’s a great way to celebrate theatre and give students a chance to do things that we usually don’t have time for them to do,” Cupo said.

Josh Akin, senior, has taken the reins of the newly formed 24 Hour Theatre Committee. “We at the committee have great expectations for the 24 Hour Theatre,” he said. “It’s not only going to be a great learning experience but also a ton of fun.”

There is a lot more structure to being a part of 24 Hour Theatre than just spending a “fun night” at the theater. Students apply via an application form that asks for everything from vital information such as grade, experience, preferred role, to more opinionated information like favorite movie and Broadway show.

“We decided an application was necessary to see who was really serious about playing a part in 24 Hour Theatre.” Students are also required to bring props and costumes so that there will be plenty of things for everyone to use.

“I’ve acted before but I’ve never done anything like this and I see it as a great test of our club’s creative talent” said junior Trevor Penzone. “24 Hour Theatre is the biggest out of all of the committees, so I think everyone else is just as excited as I am.”

The 24 Hour Theatre takes place Friday through Saturday.

“The performances will include holiday themes and be totally family-friendly. Tickets are $5, a great deal for six original plays,” Cupo said.

“Last year, we presented the radio play, It’s a Wonderful Life, as a fundraiser for Desert Foothills Community Education,” Cupo said. “This year, we thought we’d change it up, keep it fresh and interesting with original student plays.”

24 Hour Theatre raises money for the Artists in Residency Program at Education & Community Services (formerly Desert Foothills Community Service). “If you were on stage or in the audience for a Nick Johnson / Alithea production or one of the Missoula Children’s Theatre musicals, you know how great the ECS Artists in Residency Program is.”

The Cactus Shadows Fine Arts Center is located at 33606 N. 60th St. in Scottsdale.

she said while pointing to the names inscribed on the bricks the students were sitting on.

The presentation started with Ron Tucker, a retired Rear Admiral from the U.S. Navy, talking about the events that led up to the U.S. joining WWII, and the mistakes Japan made following the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.

“Japan wanted to expand their reach in the Pacific because they lacked natural resources,” Tucker said.

After attacking Pearl Harbor, a battle that left 2,000 American dead, saw 21 ships sunk and 180 planes destroyed, Tucker explained to the students that the Japanese made a couple critical mistakes following the attack.

“Our carriers were all out at sea so those weren’t damaged in the attack,” he said. “They also didn’t follow up with the initial attack. Instead they gave the U.S. time to recover and mobilize. They woke a sleeping giant.”

Tucker, whose Naval career included being the last Commanding officer of the Battleship USS New Jersey as well as commanding the Naval Station at Pearl Harbor and the Guided Missile Destroyer, USS Cochrane served on the national Board of the Pearl Harbor Memorial Fund, helped raise $52 million to replace the USS Arizona Memorial Visitor Center and Veterans Museum.

More recently he was the driving force behind the Anthem Veterans Memorial project. After showing the students pictures of various Naval ships and opening the floor for question he turned things over to fellow Anthem resident John Ravita, a WWII Navy veteran.

Ravita, now 87 years-old, explained to the students that he wasn’t much older than they are when the war started. In 1943, at the age of 17, he joined the Navy, first going to boot camp in New York before being sent to San Diego.

Assigned to be a gunner’s mate, Ravita acknowledged he had little idea what he was initially being commanded to do.

“They had us take a series of aptitude tests and that’s what they told me I’d be doing,” he said.

Serving on the USS Weaver, named after a soldier that was killed during the attack on Pearl Harbor, Ravita said the ship was still being finished when he arrived for his assignment.

Calling the ship home for two years, Ravita’s primary assignment was keeping the guns in working order. While he suffered partial hearing loss from his exposure to the firing of the guns, he managed to come away relatively injury free through his three years of service.

“Salt water is really bad for the guns so you had to keep them lubricated to keep them in good working order,” he said.

From the first time he heard

man your battle stations and

remembered feeling a bit

shaky, to battling Japanese

kamikaze pilots, to enduring

the Philippines, one that saw

Ravita said he was proud of

his three years of service, but

told the students that he doesn’t

“Honor the guys that lost

said. “They were the heroes.”

the students completed a

During the course of the season’s first two weeks the Jaguars only losses have come at the hands of Ironwood Ridge, the defending state championship at the Division-II level.

Individually Boulder Creek has had a number of standout performances in the season’s early going including three wrestlers who remain undefeated on the season.

Leading the way is senior captain Kyle Fantin, at 15-0 in the 126 pound weight class.

Freshman Cory Crooks, the coach’s son is 15-0 with 10 pins to his credit in the 106 pound weight class.

“He’s been wrestling since he was a little kid,” the coach said. “It’s a tough situation, but we’ve made a deal. He gets a hug from his dad before each match, but when I need to yell to get him to do the right thing on the mat that’s me being his coach. We do the best job we can to separate the two things. We’re dad and son when we leave the mat.”

Junior Jro Byrd also is 15-0. The 170 pounder has nine pins on the year and was dominant enough at the Southwest Showdown, a 24-team event Nov. 30 – Dec. 1 at Grand Canyon University, to earn the event’s outstanding wrestler, an honor voted on by the coaches.

Not only did Byrd stand out at the event, but the coach said the team opened a lot of eyes

with their fourth place showing.“I think it boosted our

confidence big time,” he said. “I think it was a realization that we’re going to be a real competitive team, one for others to be reckoned with.”

While not undefeated Branson Tibbs at 113 pounds with 12 wins and Jordan Erickson at 195 pounds with 13 wins also have been strong contributors. Tibbs narrowly missed placing at the state meet a year ago.

The rest of the Jaguars lineup includes Cody Hazelip at 120 pounds, Tanner Mattson (132), Matta Kautzman (138), Tyler Utter (152), Jack Warner (160), Jeffery Hicks (220) and Nathan Eldridge (285). Both Spencer Taranto and Adam Garcia have seen time competing in the 145 pound weight class.

The Jaguars close the 2012 portion of their schedule

with a home match at 5 p.m. tonight and then at the Moon Valley Invitational Dec. 21 – 22 in Phoenix.

Crooks said he simply wants the team to continue to grow as the season moves along.

“All we talk about is the end of the year,” he said. “We look at our goals which are winning sectionals and then going on to the state tournament. I told them before the year I thought a top five finish in the state tournament was possible. The kids looked at me a little funny at the start of the season, but I think they’re starting to believe. I think we realistically have four or five kids that can place at state.”

To follow the Jaguars wrestling team go to bouldercreekwrestling.weebly.com.

Marc Buckhout/The Foothills FocusBoulder Creek sophomore Kyle Fantin goes for a pin against a Brophy College Prep opponent. The Jaguars defeated Brophy, Alhambra and Centennial. To view more photos from the Jaguars Dec. 5 match go to facebook.com/thefoothills.focus.

GEOLOGyGroup readies for rock collection near Lake Pleasant

A geology group based out of Anthem will leave at 8 a.m., Dec. 20 from the Anthem Community Center for a trip near Lake Pleasant. Participants will be collecting at the legendary geode location and then at one or more calcite locations nearby.

The ground is littered with thunder eggs, beautiful chalcedony roses ranging from white to light pink, and a few crystal-lined geodes. The chalcedony roses are the best I’ve ever seen. Many are still attached to matrix and make excellent cabinet-size display pieces. If you have or have access to a good ultraviolet light, they fluoresce bright lime green due to the uranium impurities. After collecting at the geode spot (only 20 miles from Anthem), we will move 5 miles down the road to collect small chunks and crystals of calcite and possibly some travertine.

Those attending should bring water and a bag lunch. Four-wheel drive vehicles are not necessary, but reasonably high clearance vehicles will be needed.

The “geode”/chalcedony rose site is about a .25 mile hike from the parking area. The hike up the hill is not especially steep, but the trek is quite rocky and the footing can be a bit dangerous. Good boots are recommended. Backpacks or shoulder collecting bags are recommended over buckets in order to keep arms free for

balance. For information on the trip email [email protected].

Sen. Jim DeMint, the uncompromising South Carolina conservative whose average personal net worth of $40,501 made him, according to the respected Center for Public Integrity, the fourth-poorest member of the Senate, will resign his seat at the end of the year to become president of The Heritage Foundation.

Although no salary terms have been announced, the man whom DeMint will succeed has been paid more than a million dollars a year, and it’s a good bet that Jim DeMint, who is earning $174,000 a year as a senator, will get a raise to somewhere in seven figures.

The DeMint news came right on the heels of an exclusive report in Mother Jones magazine that former Republican House Majority Leader Dick Armey of Texas had resigned as chairman of FreedomWorks, one of the prominent political operations in the conservative movement with strong tea party ties. Reportedly, Armey’s severance package will leave him richer by $8 million.

Talk about striking gold. The financial windfalls visited upon these two conservative true-believers recalls the line about the c o n g r e g a t i o n a l i s t missionaries in Hawaii who seemed to find more personal prosperity than converts: “They came to

do good and did v e r y , v e r y well!”

B u t if you want to k n o w

the terribly sad state of today’s Republican Party, you just have to look at the treatment of Bob Dole, who was both the presidential and the vice presidential nominee of the GOP, in addition to being his party’s Senate leader as well as its national chairman.

But long before he was a national leader, he was 2nd Lt. Bob Dole on April 14, 1945, in the hills of Italy, when a German shell tore through his right shoulder and broke his neck and spine. He had been a 6-foot-2-inch, 194-pound athlete, and after losing 70 pounds and having his body temperature rise to 108.7 degrees, he forced himself through 39 months of painful rehabilitation to learn all over again how to use the toilet, how to eat, how to wash and dress himself, and how to walk.

His painfully thin right arm, some 2.5 inches shorter than his left, has been limp for 67 years.

In 1990, Bob Dole pushed the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) to Senate passage. President George H.W. Bush supported and signed into law the historic legislation, which has changed the face of

America and the fate of millions of Americans.

Twenty-two years later, we now take for granted the wheelchair ramps in and out of our buildings, the wider doorways for greater access, the curb-cuts that remove obstacles. The ADA welcomes citizens with disabilities fully into the nation’s academic, civic, social and economic life.

The Convention on the Rights of Persons With Disabilities, inspired by and modeled after the ADA, was negotiated and signed by the administration of President George W. Bush in 2006. One hundred fifty-four countries have signed this treaty, and 126 countries have already ratified it. The treaty would require no change in U.S. law, but would provide the framework and incentive for other countries to recognize and guarantee, as the United States already does, the rights of all people with disabilities.

Twenty-one veterans organizations, including the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Wounded Warriors Project — along with 30 religious and interfaith groups — endorse ratification by the U.S. Senate.

But on Tuesday, Senate Republicans caved to baseless, irrational

fears about black helicopters parachuting blue-helmeted U.N. troops into American neighborhoods to punish homeschooling parents or shutter religious schools. With a wheelchair-bound Bob Dole on the Senate floor urging just 13 Republicans to join all the Democrats and provide the two-thirds Senate vote needed to ratify, all but eight of the Republican senators rejected the plea of their former leader and American hero.

Why? Because they’re scared of a primary challenge from the right. That’s why. America, Bob Dole, Abraham Lincoln’s party and 700 million of our fellow human beings with disabilities all deserve better.

Republicans appear panicked

I see in your latest issue of The Foothills Focus that a new organization, Anthem Loves Dogs, wants the Anthem Community Council to give them park land for a dog park. Anthem Pets petitioned the Board for land to develop a dog park several years ago. I was a member of the Anthem Community Council Board of Directors when this issue was considered by the Council. I can’t tell you how much time and effort we spent analyzing the pros and cons of the impact such a park would have on the community. Resident input was very strong against approving the proposal. Now, here we go again. The council,

by unanimous decision, decided against the proposal. Anthem Pets found another solution outside of Anthem and it has been a whopping success.

Barbara Windgassen and her group found a donated location, fixed it up and created a national award winning dog park. Why Anthem would want to consider another dog park is beyond comprehension.
