    Defender John has become the

personal embodiment ofChelseas evolution into oneof the most powerful clubs in

    Europe. Cast in th

e mould ofthe traditional English centre-halves, he is an aggressivetackler, dominant in the airand gifted with a never-say-die passion. As Chelseascaptain, his leadership at theback has helped to maintain

    Michael Owen

    Midfield

Michael Owen's wonder goal for England against Argentina in the 1998 World Cup finalspropelled him to the forefront of international acclaim. Owen, then with Liverpool, was only18 when he tore through the Argentinian defence before finishing in sublime fashion.

England lost in a penalty shoot-out, but Owen made an indelible mark withhis majesticstrike.

His greatest feat forhis country, however, came in a World Cup qualifier in Germany inSeptember 2001 when he hit a hat-trick in an unforgettable 5-1 romp

In 2001, he inspired a famous fightback as he scored two late goals in Liverpool's FA Cuptriumph over Arsenal in the first final staged at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium.

    Steven Gerrard

    Midfield

The beating heart of Liverpool and one of Englands midfield stars, StevenGerrard has been in the form of his life for, it seems, his whole career.

Scoring incredible goals for fun, crunching into tackles, and driving through the veryheart of the opposition are all trademark Gerrard moves.

He can also play anywhere. Dangerous as a roving forward off the front man, threatening come in off the right wing, bursting down the left flank, a diligentanchorman to protect the back four or piling forward from the centre of the park, athis best, Steve will appear everywhere. And hes not a bad right back either!

Never satisfied, Stevie G has all the attributes to go on to universally recognised as

one of the worlds greatest midfielders.
