Hugo Ball and his wife EmmyHennings founded the ’CabaretVoltaire’ in Zurich in February 1916.This location provided a platform forartists like Jacno Hülsenbeck, TristanTzara and Hans Arp. Writers took thestage in outlandish costumes topresent poems and musical worksmade the bourgeois ear cringe. Soonthe first exhibitions appeared in the ’Dada Gallery’. Building on previousnew styles like Marcel Duchamp’sReady Mades (1913) and early Italianfuturism, Dada refused to call itselfart.

Dada centers appeared oneafter the other in New York,Paris, Berlin, Hannover andCologne, but also in Serbia,Rumania and South America.Dada became both a Europeanand an internationalmovement. Dada Typography
The Dada influence on typographybroke with most printing traditions. Ithad a radical attitude toward designand took typography seriously; it wasa necessity, not a side effect. Ananti-bourgeois outlook took form.
Distinguishing style elements are theclose relationship between word andimage and the use of a variety oftype forms and line dimensions. Newinterpretations of the horizontal-vertical dimension were created andlayouts included lines, surfaces, andtechniques sometimes irrelevant tothe purpose, like engravings. Syntacticelements like capital-lower case,condensed, light-semibold, etc., wereused extensively. The legibility oftexts suffered, but the content wasrevealed and emphasized.
New typographic techniques were notonly used in advertisements. Even ’serious’ works like the cubistpaintings of George Braque and PabloPicasso included written elements asessential components.

The Dada Movement Today
The original Dada movementlasted until 1923. Many detailsand episodes still inspire theimagination today, forexample, Lenin’s meeting withthe Dadaist Tristan Tzara inZurich. Such an historicmeeting was originallyarranged just to play chess...
But the Dada movement neverreally came to an end. TheHappening and Fluxusmovements (Kaprow,Rauschenberg, Paik) around1960 would be unthinkablewithout Dadaism as itspredecessor. And 1980 saw anew and powerful revival, aneed for exactly the types ofideas and applications whichDadaism represented. All theDada manifests which hadformerly been so difficult tofind were released by Germanpublishers in reprints true tothe originals. A modern musicgroup named itself after thehistoric ’Cabaret Voltaire’ andin 1982, the first Dadaistconference since 1945 tookplace in Germany.
In the last twenty years,formal and contextual Dadaistinfluences have been used asimportant style elements inthe design of alphabets,typography and internationalgraphic design. Among themost influential and creativedesigners whose work wouldbe unthinkable withoutDadaism are for exampleEdward Fella and David Carsonof the USA. In England, JamieReid gave the punk movementa look which stemmed fromDadaism. And in Germany,xplicit Thomas Nagel, AlexBranczyk brought Dadaistfreedom to the design of thetechno music movement aswell as to the digital world.Although a period of uproar inthe design is followed by anopposite trend focused onfunction, the newdevelopments make clear thatDada was not just aninfluential movement at thebeginning of the 20th century.The rebellious and enquiringprinciples of the Dadamovement could also bemodels for the present andthe future. And they will be!
