Fond du Lac Area Foundation—Great Holiday Gift Idea

When you think about the Fond du Lac area, hopefully the Fond du Lac Area Foundation comes to mind as a wonderful and valuable resource. The Fond du Lac Area Foundation supports the needs of the community on an ongoing basis. Our grants also invest in the strengths of our community. In addition to providing grants to food pantries and for flood relief, our grants provide scholarships, support the arts and help fund youth activities. In 2013, the Fond du Lac Area Foundation was able to provide over $950,000 in grants for many different purposes.

At this time of the year as you struggle for just the right gift for that special person, why not consider a gift to the Fond du Lac Area Foundation. Who would not be both happy and honored to have a gift given in their honor that would support and enhance the very community where they live? You can send your check to the Fond du Lac Area Foundation. We can provide a gift card to you to present or if you would prefer, we can send a special note to the person you are honoring to let them know that a gift has been made. 2014 Celebration of GivinG The Fond du Lac Area Foundation awarded their prestigious “Legacy” awards at the 10th annual “Celebration of Giving” dinner on September 10, 2014. The “Legacy” award was established in 2005 to recognize outstanding philanthropy and significant commitment to the Fond du Lac community. The event was attended by over 175 people and the Foundation also recognized over 45 people in attendance who have already established funds to benefit the community. Retired City Manager and current Fond du Lac Area Foundation Board Member Tom Herre gave a great speech about how the Foundation works and how easy it is for people to become a part of it. The Foundation had the pleasure of recognizing Janet Schmidt. Jan was recognized and thanked for her service as the Foundation’s first Executive Director. The Foundation also recognized Mimi Sager for her 10 years of meritorious service to the Fond du Lac Area Foundation Board of Directors. The “Legacy Awards” for the evening were presented to Ann & Richard Blamey and Paul Graham. They were recognized for their significant philanthropic contributions that they have made to help im-prove the quality of life in our community. This year’s event concluded with a special award. A name was drawn from everyone in attendance and the winner received a $500 grant to donate to the local charity of his or her choice. Maureen Schreiner was the lucky winner this year. The Foundation also announced the formation of its Legacy Society. Any current donor or future donor who has decided to remember the Foundation with a planned gift and lets the Foundation know will become part of the Legacy Society. The Fond du Lac Area Foundation continually strives to further charitable giving and philanthropy in our community...now and forever.

Enclosed is my Gift of:

Fond du Lac Area Foundation Creates Legacy societyFor nearly four decades, The Fond du Lac Area Foundation has been shaping today’s dreams while building for the future. We are a trusted partner of generations of families – carrying out family giving traditions and helping families to create a legacy they can call their own through The Fond du Lac Area Foundation’s Legacy Society.

You can become a member of the Legacy Society whether you are a current donor of The Fond du Lac Area Foundation or if you are new to us. Those who remember The Foundation through a will, trust, designation, or other planned gift are invited to join our Legacy Society. Too often, these gifts are unrec-ognized because they come at the end of donors’ lives. The Legacy Society provides a way to recognize and thank donors during their lifetimes.

Involvement in the Legacy Society gives you the opportunity to enjoy the company of others who care about leaving, protecting, and strengthening the Fond du Lac community. Members are invited to all Foundation events and are recognized in Foundation publications and on our website, at the donor’s discretion.

We invite you to join the Legacy Society in one of the following ways:

• Make a bequest to The Fond du Lac Area Foundation in your will or estate plan;

• Make The Fond du Lac Area Foundation a beneficiary of an I.R.A. or other retirement plan;

• Make The Fond du Lac Area Foundation a remainder beneficiary of a charitable remainder trust;

• Establish a charitable lead trust designating the charitable distribution to The Fond du Lac Area Foundation

• Make The Fond du Lac Area Foundation the owner of a paid-up life insurance policy or the beneficiary of a life insurance policy.

You may choose to remain anonymous in your philanthropy with The Fond du Lac Area Foundation. However, participation in the Legacy Society can be an inspirational experience, and may encourage others to look toward the future and how they too may have an enduring impact on the causes they care about.

Only a statement of intent to leave a gift to The Fond du Lac Area Foundation is required. No documentation of gift amount or type is necessary.

As a member of the Legacy Society, you will be recognized as an important philanthropic leader who is supporting The Fond du Lac Area Foundation’s ability to respond to emerging needs and ensuring the long-term vitality of this community. Rest assured that your gift is being managed by a team of true giv-ing experts – from a volunteer Board of community and business leaders, to a thoughtful, experienced staff with a deep and broad familiarity with your community, to an experienced financial team with broad investment knowledge. In other words, your investment is in the best possible hands.

The community foundation field is one of the fastest growing philanthropic sectors in the United States today. Community foundations build and strengthen communities in a multi-tude of ways, including providing the means for a wide range of donors to create permanent funds to meet critical needs. Though the first community foundation was launched just 100 years ago in Cleveland, Ohio, today there are more than 750 community foundations in the United States.

The concept has spread throughout the world, with community foundations now in countries including Australia, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Poland, Russia, Slo-vakia, South Africa and the United Kingdom – in fact, every continent but Antarctica has at least one community foundation. It has been estimated that there are at least 1,000 community foun-dations outside the United States and Canada.

Community foundations in the United States are located in almost every region and state in the country. Community foundations grant funds to a wide variety of causes - urban affairs, the arts, education, environmental projects, health and disaster relief. Community foundations offer do-nors many services and benefits. They routinely work with families, individuals, attorneys and estate and financial planners to design gift plans that fit every economic situation, ensuring that donors receive the most benefit from their charitable contributions and that their philanthropic dollars are used to the fullest extent.

Community foundations accept gifts of various sizes and types from private citizens, local cor-porations, other foundations and government agencies. Nearly every type of gift - real estate, closely held stock, artwork and insurance—can be contributed to a community foundation. Gifts are made from bequests and by living donors through various types of funds and deferred giv-ing vehicles. According to the Foundation Center, in 2012 community foundations received an estimated $7.5 billion in gifts, gave $5 billion in grants, and held total assets of $65 billion. The Foundation Center also reports that even though community foundations represent just 1% of the more than 82,000 foundations in the United States, their gifts represented 9% of total giving.

Community foundations range greatly in asset size, but all funds are invested in diverse port-folios and management is a major aspect of community foundations’ work. All share the common goal of serving donors, nonprofit organizations, and the community as a whole. In addition to this, one of a community foundation’s special functions is to provide effective leadership and coordinate the needs and services in its communities, so that charitable gifts are used effectively to fulfill a community’s most critical needs.
