Application and installation Data for Fluorescent Lamp BallastImpressed VoltageThe voltage available at the ballast must be within the limits set forth below. Operation outside these limits may result in damage to the lamp or ballast. High voltage will cause excessive heating, shorten ballast life, and reduce system efficiency. Low voltage can shorten lamp life, and lamps may fail to start.

Input Voltage To Ballast (60 Hertz)Grounding and WiringThe National Electrical Code Section 410-17 requires that all fixtures and lighting equipment, including ballast cases, must be grounded. Failure to properly ground the ballast and fixture combination could result in shock hazard and certain lamps may fail to start.

Fluorescent ballasts have painted cases. The paint must be penetrated at the point where the ground connection is made to insure a good connection. This connection can be made by using a star washer in combination with one of the mounting bolts that are used to secure the ballast to the fixture or mounting surface.

The wiring to and from the ballast must be protected in conformance with the National Electrical Code. Proper insulation materials and wire size should be used, all connections should be of an approved method, and wiring and connections should have proper physical protection, such as permanently affixed and grounded conduit or enclosed wireway channels.

CAUTION: Electrical Safety Practice required that all installation, check out, and maintenance be performed only with the entire circuit power to fixture or equipment turned off.

Operating TemperaturesBallasts, like other electric equipment, generate heat during normal operation. To prevent damage to the ballast and fixture, and to maintain proper light Output Ballast from the lamps, the fixture and the installation should be designed to keep operation temperatures as low as possible. It is recommended that

Fluorescent Systems TroubleshootingWhile normally the ballast is the first component of a lighting fixture that is checked in case of trouble with more than one lamp, as often as not the trouble lies elsewhere.

The purpose of this section is to assist in locating the source of trouble which causes a particular condition or symptom. By following this troubleshooting guide, you may be able to locate the source of trouble in minimum time and with least expense. While the guide lists many common system problems, it is presumptuous to assume that it all covers all possibilities. For further information, contact your SLI Lighting representative.

ballasts be mounted with as much of their surfaces as possible in direct contact with metal portions of the fixture which are themselves in direct contact with the surrounding air.

To meet the requirements of Underwriters’ Laboratories, Inc., the fixture and application must be so designed that the ballast case hot spot does not exceed 90°C. Operation above these limits will shorten ballast life; in addition, it may cause damage to adjacent materials or on the thermally protected ballasts, cause the lighting to go out or cycle on and off.

Several factors affect temperature and must be considered in all applications:

These variables illustrate the necessity for thorough testing of the ballast, fixture, and mounting combination to assure proper and safe application in accordance with applicable UL standards.

1. SUPPLY VOLTAGE Case Temperature increases about 1°C for

every 1% above rated supply voltage

2. AMBIENT TEMPERATURE Case temperature increases from 0.7° to

0.9°C for each 1°C increase in ambient temperature.

3. FIXTURE MOUNTING Where the fixture is surface mounted, there

can be as much as a 10°C difference in the ballast temperature, depending on ceiling material and insulation. A surface-mounted fixture may also operate up to 15°C higher than one that is pendant mounted.

4. FIXTURE DESIGN Variations in number of lamps, fixture

enclosure, size, material, lenses, and ballast location can account for up to a 20°C temperature differential.

5. BALLAST & LAMPS Manufacturing variables can affect

temperatures by as much as 5°C.

Ballast GlossaryANSI (American National Standards Institute) an organization that establishes standards of product performance for numerous industries. The main ANSI standard for fluorescent is C82.

Auto-Transformer A transformer in which the primary and secondary coils are electrically connected together. Most ballasts use this circuit to make them smaller, less costly and more efficient.

Ballast Factor A ratio of the light produced by a lamp operated by a given ballast to the light produced by a lamp operated by a reference ballast. Expressed as a percentage. Also called light Output Ballast.

Ballast Losses This is the wattage loss internal to the ballast and is power not used for producing light. These losses are dissipated as heat. Ballast losses account for the most of the difference between lamp efficiency and system efficiency.

BEF (Ballast efficiency factor) is the ratio of ballast light Output Ballast to input power. Used to compare different ballast on a light Output Ballast to power consumption basis.BEF - % light Output Ballast/input power (watts)

Case Temperature Usually the hottest spot on the outside of the ballast case.

Cathode Heat The voltage of power supplied to the lamp cathodes (the terms “cathodes” and “electrodes” are used interchangeable) in rapid start and preheat start circuits. This voltage brings the cathodes to the proper operating temperatures. In rapid start circuits, the cathodes heating voltage is nominally 3.6 volts.

Cathode Heat Cutout Used in rapid start and trigger start circuits to save energy. Reduces the cathode heating voltage from the specified level to a lower voltage after the lamp has started. Usually used in low frequency electronic ballasts.

Choke Another term for inductor. A coil of wire on an iron core, which limits or “chokes” AC current.

Circuit Interrupting Lampholder A safety device required by UL when certain voltage limits are exceeded. Also called “disconnect lampholder”. Consists of a lampholder which incorporates a switch that opens and closes when lamps are inserted or removed from the lampholder. Input power is wired through the switch, so that power is removed from the ballast whenever a lamp-end is out of a socket.

Class B An operating temperature classification for electrical components established by UL. Class B allows up to 130 C.

Class H An operating temperature classification or electrical components established by UL. Class H allows operation up to 180 C.

Class P The UL classification for thermally protected ballasts. Internal thermal cutout removes input power whenever specified temperature limits are exceeded, about 100 to 110 C (see “Thermal Cycling”.)

Core and Coil A ballast which is not encased in

a metal enclosure. The core consists of the iron lamination. The coil is the turns of magnet wire. A core and coil ballast may or may not have metal covers.Common in small fluorescent ballasts and most HID ballasts.

Cost of Light A measure of the cost of producing light. The IES unit for cost-of-light is $ per million lumen-hours.

Current Wave-Shaping A patented circuit technique where the ballast is designed in a special way to reduce current crest factor it makes the form of the current wave smoother, increases efficiency and lamp life.

Dielectric Withstand (HI-POT) A test performed by UL to insure the ability of the insulation to prevent short-circuits. Dielectric is another name for insulation. This test checks the potential of the insulation to break-down. To perform the test, a very high voltage is applied between the components and the ballast case, and the test looks for insulation breakdown or a way for current to jump to ground or dead metal. Test voltages may be a high as 150v. The failure criterion is breakdown to full conduction. Also called “hipot test” (an acronym for high potential; and there was a common commercial tester with the brand name “Hipot”).

Dimming Ballast A ballast which has special circuitry to enable it to operate the lamp load at reduced light levels. The light reduction may be continuous or in discrete steps.Dimming ballasts typically require a control unit to function. The control unit is sometimes called an auxiliary.

Efficiency As a measure of the ability to produce light, it is lumens per watt (LPW). This is more properly termed efficacy.

True efficiency as a measure of its power pass-thru would be the power delivered to the load divided by the total input power. (Example: If the input power to a ballast is 96 watts and the power delivered to the lamps is 80 watts, then the efficiency of the ballast would be 83%. The ballast loss would be 27% or 16 watts).

Electromagnetic Ballast A ballast which operates principally through the use of current carrying coils assembled on a magnetic core, versus electronic components, to operate lamps.

EMI/RFI Electro-magnetic interference or radio frequency interference. This is unintentionally generated power that has a potential to interfere with other devices operating at high frequencies. EMI/RFI above 10kHz is controlled by the FCC, and is usually reduced by filters, suppressors, or other devices.

Filament A coiled coil of wire in the end of a fluorescent lamp which emits electons when heated allowing the lamp to start. (Also known as a cathode.)

Filament Sputtering The throwing off of the coating on a lamp filament caused by incorrect ballasting. The loss of this coating results in darkened lamp ends and reduced lamp life.

Glow Switch A device containing a glow bottle used to start preheat lamps. The glow bottle starter is a voltage sensitive device which

determines whether the switch is in the start or operate mode.

Grounding The connection of an electrical conductor with the earth, so that the electricity passes off into it. Ballast cases must be grounded.

Hertz The unit of frequency (abbreviated Hz). One cycle per second = one hertz.

HO High Output Ballast. A family of rapid start lamps and ballasts which run at 800 mA nominal current.

Hot Spot The small incandescent spot on a lamp electrode from which the electron emission takes place. The hot spot must come to the proper temperature for the lamp to give rated performance. Poor hot spot formation can result in short lamp life and end discoloration.

Indoor A usage or application classification of ballasts by Underwriters Laboratories (UL). An indoor ballast is only acceptable for use indoors (UL 935 para. 4.1A). Indoor ballasts will start lamps down to 50 F (60 F for energy saving lamps).

Initial Lumens The lumen Output Ballast of a fluorescent lamp measured after 100 hours of operation.

Instant Start A method of starting lamps by applying a sufficiently high voltage to break down the arc tube and initiate the flow of current. During starting the cathode should establish the hot spot in 10 to 30 milliseconds. Also a line of ballasts and lamps which utilize instant start, usually T12 at 425 mA, but also T8 and T6 at 300 mA, 2 ft. to 8 ft., with single pin bases.

Integrated Circuit (IC) A siliconsemi-conductor chip containing an electri¬cal circuit of capacitors, resistors, andtransistors. A single integrated chip can re¬place thousands of individual components.

Inverter A device or circuit which changes current from DC to AC.

Lag A relationship between the voltage and current in a circuit; in this case the current lags behind the voltage. Lag ballasts typically use inductors as the predominant ballasting element.

Lamp Current Crest Factor (LCCF) The ratio of peak lamp current to the RMS (average) lamp current. Lamp manufacturers require a LCCF of less than 1.70 in order to achieve full lamp life. Values less than 1.70 do not achieve higher than rated lamp life.

Lamp Flicker The high speed oscillation of the light from a fluorescent lamp. The result can be a visible strobe-like effect.

Lead A relationship between the voltage and current in a circuit; in this case the current leads the voltage.Lead ballasts typically use capacitors as the predominant ballasting element.

Lead/Lag A type of circuit in which two independent branches operate lamps, one with a lead (or capacitive) branch and the other with a lag (or inductive) branch. Used in switch start and instant start circuits. One advantage of a lead/lag ballast is that the ballast is that the two lamps

Page 9: Fluorescent, CFL, HID & Emergency Ballasts 2013 Ballast Catalog... · 61362 MH 150 BAL M102 5TAP ... How TO Read Our Ballast Code ... 61392 CAP 175W MH M557/M107 ...

7

operate out of phase in such a manner that when one is off, the other is on. This eliminates ripple in the light Output Ballast.Another advantage of lead/lag is that the lamps operate independent of each other if one burns out the other continues to operate properly. This is a parallel circuit.

Leakage Current The current which UNINTENTIONALLY flows between an electrical device and ground. This current results from leakage paths created by capacitive coupling or other direct paths.UL sets very tight limits on leakage currents to reduce shock hazard. Ballasts have a leakage max limit of .5 mA or .75 mA, depending upon its application. The National Electric Code requires grounding to pass off any leakage current. Excessive leakage current can trip ground fault circuit interrupters (GFI).

Life The rated life of a ballast is defined as the time of failure for the 50th percentile. In other words, it is the time for half of a large population of ballasts to fail. Some ballasts will fail before the rated life and some will continue to operate beyond the rated life.Standard electromagnetic ballasts typically have a life of approximately 40,000 to 60,000 hours.Life of a ballast is inversely related to operating temperature. Ten degree centigrade rule for each 10°C change in case temp causes a 2 times change in life; (e.g. +10°C gives half life, -0°C gives double life).

Load The Output Ballast which is being operated or driven by a ballast, usually one or more lamps.

Low Leakage A special classification of ballasts by UL which is intended for use in medical equipment. These ballasts have significantly lower leakage currents than standard ballasts.

Low Power Factor (LPF) Power factor which has not been corrected above 90%. Any power factor under 90%. Typically uncorrected power factor is 40 to 60%.Also called “normal power factor” (NPF).

LPW Lumens per watt.

Lumen A unit for measuring the amount of light produced by a given source. One lumen per square foot equals one foot candle.

Mean Lumens The lumen Output Ballast of a fluorescent lamp after 40 percent of its rated life.

1500 mA A family of rapid start lamps and ballasts which operate at a nominal current of 1500 mA. The lamps may have various designations, such as power groove, VHO, SHO, T10, T10J.

Nominal Input Voltage The designed input, or rated voltage for a ballasts. The nominal voltage allows for normal variation around the nominal or center voltage. The voltage limits do not permit other nominal voltages; that is, if one has a nominal voltage within the voltage range of a ballast, that does not mean that it is suitable for that circuit. For example: the permissible input voltage range for a 120V nom. Ballast may be 110V to 125V. This does not mean that the ballast is suitable for use on a supply circuit which has a nominal voltage 125V.

Outdoor A usage or application classification of ballasts by Underwriters Laboratories (UL).Outdoor ballasts are further classified as Type

1, Type 2, Weatherproof.Type 1 – for use in an outdoor fixture in a metal enclosureType 2 – for use in an outdoor fixture in an enclosure (not necessarily metal) such as a plastic sign.Weatherproof – suitable for exposure to the weather without an additional enclosure.

Parallel A type of circuit in which the electrical path splits to permit the current to flow in both paths simultaneously. This operates each lamp independently, allowing one lamp to operate if the other one fails.

Phosphor A substance that emits visible light when subjected to ultra-violet light. Used to coat the inside of fluorescent lamps. Various phosphors are used to achieve desired light levels, color and lamp efficiencies.

Potting Compound The solid material that fills the inside of the ballasts, usually a mixture of asphalt and silica.

Power Factor A measure of how well the ballast utilizes the input amps to generate the power delivered to the lamps. A high power factor (HPF) ballast uses less amps than a low power factor (LPF) ballast for the same load.Technically, the power factor is the ratio of the real power to the apparent power. Real power is watts, as measured with a wattmeter. Apparent power is input volts times input amps, measured with voltmeters and ammeters. It is expressed as a percent or a number from 0 to 1. A HPF ballast has a power factor greater than 90% or .90. Power factor is a concern because using a LPF ballast in place of a HPF ballast may overload some circuits. Also, some power companies charge a penalty for users with low power factor.

Preheat Start A circuit where the lamp electrodes are heated by a switch, glow bottle starter, or electronic circuit prior to operating the lamp. Preheat lamps must be used with preheat ballasts. Preheat start is also called “switch start”.

Rapid Start A circuit where the electrode heating voltage and the starting voltage are applied to the lamp simultaneously. The lamps light when the electrodes have reached the proper temperature. The electrode heat remains on all the time the lamps are burning (continuous cathode heat). Also a family of lamps and ballasts that utilize the continuous electrode heat. The family may contain the F40 line (which runs at 430 mA), the HO line (which runs at 900 mA), and the PG/VHO/HO line (which runs at 1500 mA).

Reactor A ballast which utilizes only an inductance as the ballasting element. A reactor ballast does not have a transformer to step-up the voltage. It is two wire device which is placed in series with the lamp. Also called a “choke” or “inductor.”

Rectification A failure mode in a lamp where one electrode uses up its emission mix before the other and the ballast has enough voltage to start the lamp. In this case, the lamp will pass current only in one direction, hence rectify the current. When lamp is rectifying it is running in a total or partial DC mode, which can be harmful to the ballast. Long lamps (e.g. 8 ft.) and slimline lamps, are more prone to rectification. Proper lamp replacement will minimize this problem. Also, in electronic ballasts, rectification is the

process of changing current from AC to DC. This is a necessary and beneficial part of the circuit design.

Recessed Lampholder Also called “recessed double contact.”The lampholder used for the HO and VHO lamp lines, in which both of the lamp contacts and the lampholder contacts are recessed to prevent accidental touching.

Resonance When current flows in an AC circuit which is tuned to a particular frequency, the oscillations may reinforce each other to generate higher amps or volts.Resonance may be used intentionally in a ballast to generate higher voltage to start a lamp. Resonance may occur unintentionally if circuit elements are changed or disturbed in a ballast circuit causing harmful effects.

Series Sequence A type of circuit design for 2 lamps ballasts which starts the lamps one at a time and then operates the lamps in series. Typically used in (2) instant start ballasts.

Shock Current In a ballast, when one end of a lamp is inserted into the high voltage socket, the lamp may breakdown and provide a current flow if there is a ground path at the other end of the amp; for example, through a grounded person. The current which flows under these conditions is called shock current, since it presents a risk of shock to the rounded person. Normal UL regulations seek to limit the exposure to shock current.

Slimline A family of ballast and lamps which use the instant start circuitry. The lamps have single pin bases and is most often T12, T8, and T6.

Soft Start A description of a lamp starting where the electrodes have come up to the proper temperature before full lamp conduction, and there is a nice transition from the glow state to full conduction. A hard start would describe a lamp which instant starts, or comes on sharply without time for the electrodes to heat up.

Sound Rating A procedure for describing the amount of sound which may be generated by a ballast.“A” is the quietest, “D” or “E” is the most noticeable. This makes sound rating a qualitative, subjective rating system as opposed to a quantitative one. There is no industry standard for sound rating; however, different manufacturers tend to agree on levels. Havells (or any other ballast mfg.) does not publish decibels numbers for sound. This is because the numbers which are measured in the testing process bear no relationship to the numbers one would measure in the end usage. The actual sound generated is affected greatly by many things external to the ballast; such as fixture geometry, secureness of mounting; room dimensions, room absorbance, etc.Further, the perception of sound emanating from a ballast is affected by the ambient (or background) sound level. Therefore, sound rating is on a subjective scale.NOTE: A ballast should never be shimmed to reduce noise.

Starter May be a fluorescent or HID starter.A fluorescent starter is used to heat the lamp electrodes prior to starting.A HID starter is used to generate high voltage pulses which breakdown the arc-tube to initiate the discharge. HID starters are also called “starting aids” or “ignitors”.

8

Starting Aid/Starting Plane A grounded metal strip, usually part of the lighting fixture, which must be provided within a set distance along the length of rapid start and switch start fluorescent lamps to facilitate lamp starting.

Starting Voltage The voltage necessary to breakdown the arc-tube and initiate the discharge. The starting voltage is higher than the lamp operating voltage. There are usually two starting voltages which must be specified, peak, and RMS. The peak voltage is referenced to the grounded starting plane. The RMS voltage is measured across the lamp.

Tandem Wired The practice of wiring one ballast to lamps in two different fixtures to reduce the number of ballasts required. As an example, three 2 lamp fixtures can be wired with two 3 lamp ballasts vs. three 2 lamp ballasts.

T5, T8, T10, T12 The designation used to describe different fluorescent lamps by their outside diameter. This alphanumeric portion of the designator refers to the lamp’s diameter in 1/8 of an inch increments. A T12 lamp is 1 ½ inch in diameter, or 12 x 1/8 inch.

Temperature Rise A means of measuring the operating temperatures in a ballast, usually specifying a temperature rise above a given ambient temperature. Another method of specifying temperature is absolute, used when a certain maximum temperature, irrespective of ambient, should not be exceeded.

Thermal Cycling In ballasts that have internal thermal protectors, which sense an over-temperature condition, the thermal protector removes power from the ballast and shuts it down. If the cutout is an automatic reset type, when the ballast has cooled, the power will be reapplied and come back on. The process repeats, causing the lamps to cycle on and off. The on/off time may be a half hour or longer. Thus thermal cycling may be caused by improper ballast application, environment, such as ambient temperature too high, poor fixture thermal management, improper ballast mounting, or ballast end of life.

Thermal Factor When one lamp and ballast combination is compared to another in the same fixture, the thermal factor is a modifier to the coefficient of utilization (CU).This takes into account the fact that the new lamp and ballast may perform different thermally than the combination on which the original CU measurement was made.Thermal factor results from the sensitivity of the lamp to lamp wall temperature.

Thermal Protector The device inside of the ballast which senses the temperature and removes input power whenever the limit is exceeded. This usually consists of a bimetal switch.Thermal protection may be of two varieties, automatic resetting or non-resetting (like a fuse). When a non-resetting protector operates, the ballast may be permanently inoperable, and must be replaced. If the thermal protection meets certain UL specifications, the ballast can be classified as “Class P”.

Time Delay Relay Some sign ballasts incorporate a switch which delays the application of the starting voltage for a period of time after the electrode voltage. This switch is called a time

delay relay. Delaying the starting voltage for a few seconds ensures that the electrodes have reached the proper temperature prior to running the lamp. This significantly increases lamp life. This is particularly important in applications that are difficult to reach, such as signs on high poles.

Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) Excessive THD (defined by ANSI as greater than 32%) may cause adverse effects to the electrical system. THD levels below 20% provide optimal system compatibility, but levels below 10% may not add any practical benefit. 10% THD types may also introduce excessive in-rush current unless circuitry is added that limits in-rush levels.

Trigger Start A variation of the preheat start circuit, which is analogous to the rapid start circuit. In this circuit, the ballast supplies continuous voltage to the electrodes to heat them to the proper temperature. Upon starting, the electrode voltage is reduced about one half to reduce the losses.

Type 1 A UL classification of ballasts suitable for outdoor applications as long as it is in a metal enclosure. (See “outdoor”).

UL Listed (UL) A UL listing on a ballast product signifies that the unit has passed all of the testing requirements of UL-935, and therefore can be installed in any fixture that has been certified to accept a UL listed ballast. This in effect by UL definition makes the ballast an end item for its purpose.

UL Recognized (UR) As with many items other than ballasts, most items are made to be a sub-component of a much larger system. This means that the ballast is listed only as a component of some other larger system, that as a whole must be UL listed with the ballast only as a sub-component. A UL component therefore is not an end item and is always only a part of a complete system.

Weatherproof A usage or application classification of a ballast by Underwriters Laboratories.

A weatherproof ballast is acceptable for exposure to the weather without an additional enclosure. (UL 935 para 4.1 D).
