FLIRT MAGAZINE

MY MAGAZINE BRIEF

• “You have been commissioned by the Northern Echo to produce a new magazine or newspaper product. Your product can be in any style or genre but it must be self financed through sales or advertising. You must also produce your magazine for a specified audience segment within the 16 to 25 age group.”

Page 3: Flirt magazine pitch complete

HOW I INTEND TO MEET THIS BRIEF• In order for me to meet this brief, my magazine will need to include content that is

suitable for my target audience of females between the ages of 16-24 years of age in the socioeconomic group ABC1.

• The quality of the magazine needs to fit with those who read the Northern Echo, which means my product needs to be high/premium quality.

• My magazine is a hybrid which means it includes content typical of women’s lifestyle magazines but also content from fashion magazines.

• I chose hybrid as there is a gap in the market for this specific genre as it is typical to see various women’s lifestyle and fashion magazines but not the two combined

• This magazine will be self financed from selling advertisement space and through sales of the magazine itself.

Page 4: Flirt magazine pitch complete

WHY HAVE I CHOSEN HYBRID?

• I noticed a gap in the market for a magazine that combined fashion/beauty specific content with women’s lifestyle content in one product.

• Using hybrid as a genre meant that I could include a mixture of content such as interviews, beauty reviews, fashion related articles as well as including different types of photography and as well as experimenting with different types of magazine layouts that would suit both Women’s lifestyle and a Fashion magazine.

AUDIENCE PROFILE• In a socioeconomic group that falls in ABC1

• Females between the ages of 16-24 years old

• The tribes that this magazine is aimed at could vary from trendies, hipsters, indies.

• It will not be aimed for those under ABC1 because of the high quality content inside and the products that I may include inside (clothes to buy that could be deemed too expensive for them)

• Educational status could be from those who are still at school, college or at university.

Page 6: Flirt magazine pitch complete

HOW THE NORTHERN ECHO WILL LIMIT MY MAGAZINE

• My magazine will have to be suitable for both my target audience and also those who read the Northern Echo.

This means that there can be

1. No nudity in my images

2. Taboo language and swear words will not be included

3. No inappropriate content

Page 7: Flirt magazine pitch complete

SECONDARY AUDIENCE

• My secondary audience will be anyone who would also read the Northern Echo newspaper. This means that the content in my magazine will have to suit my target audience as well as readers of the newspaper.

• My secondary target audience could be anyone such as a parent/guardian, teenagers, siblings etc…

THINGS TO CONSIDER….

THE PRESS COMPLAINTS COMMISSION• The Press Complaints Commission is an individual

body which deals with any complaints made from the public about a specific area of content in a magazine publication or newspaper. Any complaints made are investigated under the Editors Code of Practice, which binds all national newspapers and magazines. This is funded by the publishing industry and is a voluntary regulating body.

HOW MY MAGAZINE WILL SUIT MY TARGET AUDIENCE

• The price of the magazine will be £2.• I will be using localized news/information as well as using people that are from the

local area for e.g. their fashion style• The models I will be using are young which will be relatable for the readers. • The colours of the magazine will mimic magazines that are also very popular to young

readers from both Women’s lifestyle and Fashion magazines. • The pictures, colours and font will stand out and be eye catching as I will be

contrasting the colour of the background with the text and images on each page to make it stand out as much as possible.

• The content will be practical, neat and look professional as much as possible.

THINGS TO CONSIDER…

THROUGHOUT MY MAGAZINE

• All information that I will include in my magazine will be as accurate as possible

• Anyone under the age of 16 will have parent or guardians permission to have their photograph taken or to be interviewed

• Any material that I print will not be taken from another person’s right therefore I will ask permission if that information/picture is either copyrighted or that I do not own.

• Before any material is published, I will show the content to those who have been involved in the magazine to make sure that they are happy with the content and there is nothing that offends or that is incorrect.

FLIRT MAGAZINES AIMS:

• A magazine to entertain those who are interested in women’s lifestyle and fashion

• It is aimed at a young audience as I can cover a variety of topics that a lot of young females are interested n

such as music, fashion, beauty, gossip.

• My magazine is not only to entertain but to also inform important situations in the world such as my article;

My Anxiety & Me.

Page 21: Flirt magazine pitch complete

Page 22: Flirt magazine pitch complete

IDEAS • The idea behind my magazine is

to create a women’s lifestyle magazine but also with a mixture of fashion and beauty, a hybrid.

• Content inside the magazine will be localized, using people in the area to interview, photographs etc.

• Using people from the local area could be deemed popular as the magazine content can be more relatable compared to magazines such as Glamour as they use models and products and clothing from expensive designer stores.

MOCK UP 1

• Stylistics: 2 colour palette with 3 images in total all placed on the first page of the DPS, whilst the second page included the article. Appears slightly more text heavy because of this layout. Quote inserts included with the images.

Imagery: Used young model who was 17 years of age, making it more relatable to the reader. No models or heavy editing is used as needs to look natural as possible. Do not want to make it appear like I am glamourizing an important and serious topic – avoid offending readers.

FOCUS GROUP FEEDBACK:

• Mock up 2 was preferred because of the overall layout.

• Focus group said that it was much more readable, less cluttered and more noticeable to the audience.

• The background of Mock up 2 seemed more appropriate because of the use of white text on a black background

• However, the imagery on Mock up 2 was preferred as it emphasized the eyes and emotions of the model.

• Mock up 1 seemed more cluttered and tight because of the whole article placed on one page.

• My focus group like what I did with the title in Mock 2; placing the title over the image of my model, makes it look different.

• Article was written to help inform readers about the topic as well as help those who need it and where they could get help.

• Text to image ratio is 80:20

• Paragraph lengths vary between 6 sentences long to 15.

• Altogether there are 15 paragraphs in this article.

Page 28: Flirt magazine pitch complete

STYLISTICS OF THE MAGAZINE

• The colour scheme for my first DPS will be black for the background, white text with at least 4/5 photographs for both pages altogether.

• The content page will have a white background, with at least 3 images scattered almost as if it is a preview of the content inside if the customers buy the magazine. The text will be black and red (for the beauty title as I want I to resemble lipstick)

Page 29: Flirt magazine pitch complete
