GAME DAY Miami Dolphins Roster (As of Aug. 15) Carolina Panthers Roster (As of Aug. 15)
In MemoriamThis of Finsiders Playbook is dedicated to the memory of former Dolphins tackle Anthony Cesario, guard
Harry Galbreath, safety Barry Hill, tackle Eric Laakso, defensive tackle Shawn Lee and tight end/broad-caster Jim Mandich, each of whom passed away in the past year.
On April 26, 2011, the Miami Dolphin organization mourned the passing of Mandich, a member of theDolphins family both on and off the field for more than 40 years who left an imprint that was both uniqueand authentic.
He was a popular tight end best known as “Mad Dog” for his tenacious and relentless attitude on thegreat Dolphins Super Bowl teams in the 1970s, playing for the club from 1970 through 1977. He was a mem-ber of two Super Bowl winning squads (1972, 1973), including the Perfect Season team, and three AFCChampionship teams.
Mandich finished his career with the Dolphins with 121 receptions for 1,406 yards and 23 touchdowns. When he left the Dolphins, he ranked sixth in team annals in receptions, tied for second in touchdown catches, and tied for seventh in scoring. Even now, in current Dolphin history, he is second among tight ends in scoring, fifth in receptions and second in touchdown catches.

GAME PLAN Tale of the Tape Panthers Overview Players to Watch
2010 Final Standings
With a new head coach and a newfranchise quarterback in firstoverall pick Cam Newton, theCarolina Panthers are starting
over in 2011 after the second-worst season infranchise history.
The 2010 season was both nightmarish andunexpected for the Panthers, who had finished12-4 only two years earlier. In fact, the 10-gamedrop over two seasons was the biggest in theNFL in more than a decade. The only timeCarolina had a worse record was in 2001 whenthe Panthers ended up 1-15.
Ron Rivera is the new head coach in Carolinaafter taking over for John Fox, who is now inDenver. Rivera went to Carolina after guiding theNo. 1-ranked defense in the league last year inSan Diego. Rivera also was in charge of thedefense in Chicago in 2006 when the Bearsmade it to the Super Bowl against Indianapolis inSouth Florida.
Rivera inherited a team that has its share oftalent — despite last year’s record.
The Panthers, who opened the preseasonwith a 20-10 victory over the New York Giants, were the victims last season of a few key injuriesalong with poor quarterback play, which resultedin the lowest-ranked pass offense and totaloffense in the NFL.
But few teams can match Carolina’s depth atrunning back with DeAngelo Williams, who re-signed with the Panthers as a free agent thissummer, Jonathan Stewart and speedster MikeGoodson.
The receiving corps is led by Steve Smith, whoremained in Carolina despite being the subject oftrade rumors before the start of training camp.Injuries in 2010 contributed to Smith having hisleast productive season since 2004, but the 11-year veteran still has five 1,000-yard seasons onhis resume.
Most of the attention on offense, though, willbe on Newton, the Heisman Trophy winner wholed Auburn to the national title last season.Newton may or may not be the starting quarter-back when Carolina opens the regular season, but he figures to seen plenty of action intonight’s game.
In addition to being able to re-sign Williams, the Panthers also were able to keep their topdefensive free agent when they re-signed endCharles Johnson.
He easily led the Panthers in sacks last seasonwith 11.5, more than three times as many as sec-ond-place finishers Everette Brown and JamesAnderson.
Rivera ran a 3-4 defense in San Diego, but heis keeping Carolina’s 4-3 system.
The Panthers finished 18th in total defense in
the NFL in 2010 and allowed 30 points or morein almost half their games (seven). To be fair, thedefense wasn’t helped by an offense that hadtrouble moving the ball.
In addition to Johnson, the Panthers’ othernotable players on defense are middle linebackerJon Beason and cornerback Chris Gamble, a for-mer first-round pick who is hoping to bounceback after a disappointing and injury-riddled2010 season.
In the kicking game, the Panthers will bring afamiliar face to Sun Life Stadium, as formerDolphins kicker Olindo Mare takes over for JohnKasay, the last remaining member from thePanthers’ inaugural 1995 team.
Mare came over as a free agent from Seattle, where he made a trip to the playoffs last season. The Panthers missed the postseason the last twoyears and will have a hard time getting backthere in 2011 playing in a division that featureslegitimate Super Bowl contenders in Atlanta andNew Orleans.
But Carolina is hoping to at least get back inthe right direction in 2011 after the disaster thatwas 2010.

The Dolphins run defense is looking to build offits strong finish of 2010 when it held five of thelast six opponents under 100 yards rushing, andCarolina presents a good preseason test in thatdepartment. With DeAngelo Williams, JonathanStewart and Mike Goodson, the Panthers haveone of the most talented running back groups inthe entire league. The offensive line, led by tackleJordan Gross and center Ryan Kalil, also is solid. But the Dolphins counter with a veteran and tal-ented front seven. The defensive line is particular-ly deep. Of particular interest in this game will bewatching 2010 first-round pick Jared Odrick, whomissed all but one game of his rookie season.

The Dolphins running game willhave a new look in 2011 with thearrival of second-round pick DanielThomas and Reggie Bush. Together, they could give the Dolphins a “thun-der and lightning” combination. TheDolphins also will figure to take alook tonight at young running backslike Kory Sheets and Nic Grigsby, aswell as third-year veteran Lex Hilliard. The Dolphins also will be looking tobuild some cohesiveness along theoffensive line and continue the devel-opment of first-round pick MikePouncey at center. In Carolina, theDolphins will face a team that was alot better against the run than its2010 ranking (23rd) might suggest. The Panthers were tied for seventhwhen it came to yards per rushingattempt.

This matchup should be interesting because ofthe presence of Carolina quarterback CamNewton, the first overall pick in the 2011 draft. The Panthers also have Jimmy Clausen, who wasa second-round choice last year. Carolina’s topreceiver is Steve Smith, but it’s questionable he’llsee a lot of action tonight given a finger injury hesustained in training camp. From the Dolphins’standpoint, the pass defense will feature thereturn of veteran linebacker Jason Taylor. TheDolphins are looking for him to provide a pass-rushing complement to Pro Bowl linebackerCameron Wake. In the secondary, young playerslike safety Reshad Jones and rookie seventh-roundpick Jimmy Wilson will be looking to make animpression.

The Dolphins return the nucleus oftheir passing game, including topreceivers Brandon Marshall andDavone Bess. Tonight’s game will giveDolphins fans their first close-up lookat speedster Clyde Gates, the rookiefourth-round pick from AbileneChristian, as well as versatile rookieCharles Clay, a fullback/tight endfrom the University of Tulsa. ChadHenne and Matt Moore figure to bothget turns at quarterback for theDolphins. The Panthers pass rush isled by defensive end Charles Johnson, who recorded 11.5 sacks last seasonand was re-signed as a free agent thissummer. Safety Charles Godfrey ledthe team in interceptions in 2010with five, while cornerback CaptainMunnerlyn had three.
Special TeamsThe Dolphins entered training camp set when it comes to their kicker (Dan Carpenter) and punter (Brandon
Fields), but things aren’t quite as settled when it comes to the return game. In particular, the team would loveto see someone emerge as a big-play kickoff returner and rookie Clyde Gates will be given every opportuni-ty to show he can be that guy. On punt returns, rookie free agent Phillip Livas showed big-play ability in thepreseason opener with a 75-yard touchdown and he’ll be looking to build on that performance. The Dolphinsalso will be looking to start finding the right combination for their kick coverage teams. The big story withCarolina’s special teams is the arrival of kicker Olindo Mare. The long-time Dolphins kicker is taking over forJohn Kasay, who had been with Carolina since the first year of the franchise in 1995. Carolina’s return gameis spearheaded by Captain Munnerlyn, who had the team’s longest kickoff (64) and punt return (37) in 2010.

The game against the Panthers, combined with the preseason opener against Atlanta and the Aug. 27 game at Tampa Bay, marks the second time in three years the Dolphins face three NFC South teams in the preseason.
The Dolphins’ 27-17 victory over Carolina in 2009 was part of a 4-0 preseason, the fifth perfect preseason showing in team history. The others came in 1998, 1981, 1979 and 1976.
Carolina’s only touchdown in the 2006 preseason meeting — a 19-10 Panthers victory — came on a98-yard kickoff return by then-rookie DeAngelo Williams.
Three players who started the preseason game against Carolina in 2006 are still on the Dolphins roster — offensive lineman Vernon Carey, linebacker Jason Taylor and cornerback Will Allen.
When the teams met in the preseason in 2009, Dolphins cornerbacks Vontae Davis wore 24 instead of his current 21, and Sean Smith wore 31 instead of his current 24.
The Dolphins have given up an average of 194.5 yards in their two preseason meetings againstCarolina, but have surrendered punt returns of 58 and 40 yards, in addition to Williams’ 98-yard kick-off return.

Training Camp

Q. When you got the playerstogether for the first time follow-ing the strike, what was yourmessage to them?TS: It was all about winning, nothing about
anything in the past. I could care less about any-thing that happened in the past. We are thinkingabout moving forward now. It’s about our team.I presented our team goals and our philosophies. They were pretty clear and the players under-stand the direction we want to head in.
Q. Put into words what this offsea-son was like for you, waiting forthe two sides to settle?TS: It was kind of an eerie offseason. It was
at times out here lonely. I’ve tried to manage mycoaches as best as I could. Those guys workedhard and long hours during that time. But I didget them out of the building a little bit knowingthat their summer was going to get cut short, and that’s what happened. We had an awful lotof time to spend on football and learn abouteach other as coaches.
Q. This training camp has to be oneof the most difficult tests youhave had as a head coach, get-ting players ready in such a shorttime without the benefit of anoffseason program and with somany important evaluations tomake. Can you talk about this?TS: It was a very difficult summer because of
all the possible scenarios out there that you hadto plan and prepare for. But I’m very fortunatethat this coaching staff did an outstanding job inpreparation. We were ready when the new rulescame down and we put our plan in place. Theplayers, to their credit, came back in good shape.Maybe not the way they would have been if wehad the offseason training program, but they stillshowed a lot of maturity in their preparation.
Q. There’s been a lot of talk alreadyabout Chad Henne. What haveyou seen so far from him?
TS: I’ve seen really good progress out ofChad Henne in several areas. If the lockout wasgood for anything or anybody, it was good forChad. Most quarterbacks in the league really hadto be the ringleaders in the lockout time for theplayer-only workouts. Why show up if the quar-terback isn’t there? In this case, that reallyworked well for Chad. Our team responded wellto him from what I can gather. That helped puthim out there in front. All that being said, he’sthrowing the ball better down the field and that’sanother area of improvement. And he hastremendous, tremendous knowledge. He’s theguy with the answers right now in this offense.
Q. Are you confident that there istime to give the young players afair shot?TS: I think there is enough time. You have to
do it wisely. At some point early on, though, youhave to get your team ready to play. The rules, and the way the rules have gone down, have
aided that process a little. Some of the free agentplayers we signed and some of the exclusive-rights guys were not able to practice until Aug. 4,so we had the first several days without 12 guysbeing able to practice. That allowed the youngplayers to get some additional practice time.
Q. Have you ever had the opportu-nity to coach a player with theskill set of a Reggie Bush?TS: I can say I’ve never had a player quite
like him. All I know is that I remember being onthe sideline in Dallas when we played NewOrleans and I always felt that Reggie was one ofthe most explosive guys that I have seen, espe-cially on the field level.
Q. Will it be fun concocting ways ofusing him?
TS: Yes, it sure will be fun. But we’re alsogoing to be committed to turning around andjust handing him the ball. That’s one way of get-ting it to him, which is a little something differ-ent. From there, being able to use him different-ly within our scheme, it helps with the goal of notbeing so predictable.
Q. Even at 37 years old, tell us inyour mind what Jason Taylorbrings to this team?TS: First of all, a sense of veteran leadership.
Prior to Jason coming to the team, Will Allen wasthe oldest player on the team. Getting Jason, added a veteran presence that was needed in ourlocker room. He’s unselfish. He’s not afraid toshare. That being said, he can still rush the pass-er. We saw that in playing against him twice lastyear. This guy can still play. There is still gas in histank and he still has a passion to win in thisleague.
Q. Finally, what is your message tothe fans as they get ready for thestart of a new season?TS: I want the fans to know that is a team
that has the capability to be an explosive team. We’ve worked hard to reach that point. We’revery excited going into this season to play infront of our home fans.

T ony Sparano, entering his 12th sea-son in the NFL and his 27th year inthe coaching profession overall, was
named the eighth head coach in MiamiDolphins history on Jan. 16, 2008. He came tothe Dolphins after spending the previous fiveyears with the Dallas Cowboys. He also joinedthe team with five years of experience as ahead coach at the collegiate level.
In 2009, Sparano accomplished the difficulttask of balancing the need to add youth to hissquad while keeping the Dolphins in the thickof the playoff hunt. Like he did with quarter-back Chad Henne, who won seven of his 13overall starts in his first season seeing regularaction under center, Sparano furthered thegrowth of fellow second-year players DavoneBess, who led the team in receptions, JakeLong, who was named to his second consecu-tive Pro Bowl squad, defensive ends KendallLangford and Phillip Merling, as well as ProBowl kicker Dan Carpenter.
In 2008, Sparano’s first year as theDolphins’ head coach, he guided the team to asingle-season turnaround matched just once inNFL history. Taking over a 1-15 squad from ayear earlier, he led the Dolphins to an 11-5record and the AFC East title. His 10-gameimprovement has been achieved only oneother time in league annals, in 1999 when theIndianapolis Colts went from 3-13 to 13-3.

First-round pick Mike Pouncey looking to live up to high expectations

Next to quarterback, there probably isn’t a more pressure-filledposition for an NFL rookie than center because he touchesthe ball upwards of 70 times a game. Mike Pouncey is beingasked by the Miami Dolphins to embrace that pressure this
year as their first-round draft pick. Two days after the start of training camp, Pouncey dove right into the
action in the team’s first full-contact practice in shells. He didn’t evenhave time to celebrate the signing of his first NFL contract as he jumpedright into the fray taking snaps with the first-team offensive line.Considering the fact that he had no offseason minicamps to digest thenew playbook, Pouncey held his own.
“It was a good thing that he’s played in the Florida heat because hetook a lot of snaps out there, which is good,” said Head Coach TonySparano, who is relying on Pouncey to anchor a rebuilt offensive line.“There are so many natural things that he did in practice that made himstand out, specifically some things that he did in the run game and somethings that he did in protections drills during one-on-ones.”
The last rookie center to start all 16 games for the Dolphins wasSamson Satele in 2007, but he didn’t have the added burden of being afirst-round pick on his shoulders. Taken 15th overall by the Dolphins inApril, Pouncey knew a lot was going to be expected of him right away.He had a very brief window the day after the first round — when theNFL lockout was lifted for 24 hours — to come to Davie, meet Sparanoand his staff and get a first look at the playbook.
Three months passed before the converted guard could talk toSparano and new offensive coordinator Brian Daboll again. His agentworked feverishly with General Manager Jeff Ireland to get his contractdone as quickly as possible so that Pouncey wouldn’t miss too manypractices.
“I’m progressing each day and earning the guys’ respect, so as longas I keep on a positive note and keep earning the guys’ respect I think

I’ll be good,” Pouncey said. “I’m definite-ly caught up on everything thanks to theguys in the room because even thoughthey don’t have to stay in extra because Iknow they’re tired and want to go tosleep, they’re pulling me in the room andteaching me the plays.”
In addition to the veteran offensivelinemen on the Dolphins getting him up tospeed, Pouncey also has the luxury ofleaning on his twin brother, Maurkice, who is in his second year with thePittsburgh Steelers and made the ProBowl as a rookie center. The two havebeen trading texts throughout campbecause their time is being taken up bypractices and meetings, but his brother’sadvice has been simple — just keep push-ing and working.
Another advantage Pouncey has is thefact that he’s going up against one of thetoughest defenses in the league and anupper-echelon nose tackle in Paul Soliai.Back in that first full-contact practice,Pouncey actually stood up Soliai twice. The6-foot-5, 303-pound Pouncey clearlymade an impression on Soliai.
“He was pretty good. We both talked aboutjust giving each other a good look and just
coming out hard,” said Soliai. “There are a lotof days left, so we’ll just see how he progress-es.”
Even though they don’t line up directly over
him in practice, defensive ends KendallLangford and Jared Odrick also liked whatthey saw out of the rookie on his first day.Odrick planned to test Pouncey early onbefore switching roles and helping himprepare for opponents.
Another important trait Pouncey exhib-ited on his first day on the job thatSparano noticed on game film fromFlorida was his football smarts. It’s some-thing he hopes to continue to see as campand the preseason go along.
“His awareness in there was good. There was a lot of stuff happening in therewith games and we had third-down pres-sures coming at us and he really didn’tknow any of this,” Sparano said. “This guycame into the meeting room here thismorning and did a super job of handlingthat. So that’s just good football aware-ness of a smart player. You could see theathlete but the way he reacted to some ofthose things that were happening wasgood.”
How Pouncey reacts in that Mondaynight season opener against the New
England Patriots and imposing nose tackleVince Wilfork will give Sparano a better indica-tion of just how good he can be in the NFL.

2010 first-round pick hopingto make up for lost time
Odrick returns on a mission
J ared Odrick didn’t quite know how to answer the question, so hetook the comedic approach.
“What will I bring to the defense?” Odrick repeated. “Great charmand good looks. C’mon, let’s not kid ourselves now.”
Obviously, Odrick left out his great sense of humor. Oh, and his abil-ity to disrupt things along the line of scrimmage.
That’s really what the Dolphins want to see out of him now that he’sback after missing practically all of his rookie season because of leginjuries.
After a slow start in camp and the preseason, Odrick was starting tobe that kind of player in 2010 and he’s hoping to pick up where he leftoff.
That’s what the Dolphins have in mind as well.“I have very high expectations,” said Coach Tony Sparano. “I don’t
know if that’s a good thing to do for Jared, but probably if I did it back-wards, he wouldn’t think too much of me.”
Odrick’s return to the lineup should bolster an already impressivedefensive line, a position that might have been the strongest on theteam a year ago.
With Odrick back, the Dolphins have six legitimate starting-qual-ity defensive linemen — the others being Randy Starks, Paul Soliai,Kendall Langford, Phillip Merling and Tony McDaniel.
Odrick started in his only game as a rookie, but he’s quick tosay that being a starter isn’t his focal point.
“I’ll say this until I’m blue in the face, I said it through col-lege and I’ll say it here: This is a production league,” Odricksaid. “If you don’t produce, you’re not starting. If youdon’t produce, you’re not playing. I really don’t think itmatters whether you’re starting or whatever it is.”
Of course, the expectation is that Odrick willbecome a starter at some point. He was, after all,the Dolphins’ first-round pick in 2010 after theytraded down in the first round in a deal with SanDiego.
The Dolphins had enough confidence in Odrickand his talents that they moved Starks fromdefensive end to nose tackle, even thoughStarks returned to his old position after Odrickwas injured.
Odrick understands very well the expecta-tions that come with being a first-round pick, and he’s not fazed by them one bit.

See ODRICK, page 50
49,50-ODRICK 8/15/11 8:29 PM Page 1
“Forget the high expectations of being afirst-round pick,” he said. “I have high expecta-tions for myself. Anybody that knows me andthese coaches and these players, there’s nobodyscreaming at myself more than me. Whether it’sjust a hesitation step, a false step, wrong step, hands not in the right place, I’m screaming atmyself more than anybody. It’s not for anythingelse but just trying to better myself.
“My expectations might be higher than whatyou guys have for me. When I see something onTwitter, I’m already thinking that already. I’malready there. I know what I should be doing andit’s going to happen this year.”
Even though he was limited to one regularseason game, Odrick said he was able to gainvaluable experience.
Because of that, he said he didn’t feel like arookie coming into this year’s camp, particularlybecause he didn’t have to perform “rookieduties.”
“I’ve been through camp and I made itthrough camp healthy and that’s what I plan ondoing this year,” Odrick said. “In that aspect, Idon’t feel like a rookie on the field and off the
field. On the field I really feel like I got a jump-start on things because I went through it lastyear, but then off the field I don’t have to go getextra dip, I don’t have to go pick up lunch, I don’thave to do things like that.”
In his only game action of 2010, in the open-er at Buffalo, Odrick recorded only one tackle butit was good for a 4-yard loss by Bills runningback C.J. Spiller.
It’s the type of big play that’s a bonus from a3-4 defensive lineman, whose primary role is tofree up the linebackers to make tackles.
Odrick, who’s a rock-solid 6-5, 304 pounds, looks the part of a 3-4 defensive end. In fact, that’s what he was projected to play after liningup at defensive tackle at Penn State.
The Dolphins got a glimpse of what Odrickcould do last season. They want to see more.
After all, they only got one game out of theirfirst-round pick last year. Around the league,Tennessee defensive end Derrick Morgan wasthe only other No. 1 pick who played in lessthan half his team’s games.
So, in essence, the Dolphins are almost get-ting an additional first-round pick in 2011.
“His movement, his strength, his physicalconditioning right now are outstanding,”Sparano said. “He seems very explosive. I havehigh expectations for him and Jared has highexpectations for himself. I watched him (early incamp) get really upset with himself over a passrush. This guy has a pretty high expectation forhimself, so I am hoping he is a major contributorin that group.”

Dolphins players and JeanetteSparano, wife of HeadCoach Tony Sparano, visited
local libraries this summer in supportof the MVR Summer ReadingPrograms in Miami-Dade, Broward,Palm Beach and Lee County libraries.
More than one million kidsthroughout the state of Florida havebenefited from the MVR (MostValuable Reader) Summer ReadingProgram.
Wide receiver Davone Bess partici-pated in a MVR Summer ReadingProgram at Little River Branch PublicLibrary. For Bess, this experience tookhim back to his own childhood grow-ing up in Oakland, Calif., and herelayed those stories to thegroup of kids before read-ing to them. His presen-tation followed thestrong message givento the kids by theirown librarian, SherrillMartin, remindingthem all to hold on totheir library cards.
“When Miss Sherrillgot up and started talkingabout the importance of yourlibrary card and not losing it,that just rung a bell,” Bess said. “Iwas one of those kids who always lost mylibrary card but I made sure that I found it andI got in that library as much as possible. This isa great feeling, just coming back and impactingkids and just trying to make a difference andthat’s what it’s all about.”
The book that Bess was given to read was“Lola At The Library,” and it brought a smile tohis face because it was the kind of book he usu-ally reads to his 3-year-old daughter. Not one tojust sit down and read and then leave, Bessengaged the kids by stressing the importance ofeducation and going to college, pointing outthat not everyone makes it to the pros. Hereminded them that it’s just as important to bea doctor, lawyer or veterinarian.
Fullback Lousaka Polite helped kick off theBroward County Summer Reading Program atCarver Ranches Public Library in July along withTD the mascot and he picked up a whole new
group of Finaticsalong the way. TheWest Park young-
sters impressed himwith their knowledge
of the mammals histeam is named after.
“I had a blast and they werevery knowledgeable of dolphins,”
said Polite, whose fiancée is a fourth-gradeteacher at Watkins Elementary. “We had a littleQ&A about the dolphin habitats, what they doin the water and their anatomy and the kids arevery smart, so they had fun with it.”
The actual title of the book Polite was read-ing from was “Do Whales Have Belly Buttons?”But he swapped out the word “whales” withdolphins since they are so similar. Some of thekids were surprised that the answer was yes,but then Polite explained why.
“It was wonderful to see that the kids want-ed to come to the library and get to meet acelebrity,” said branch manager Tanisha Jones.“I could see that the majority, if not all of them, were connecting with Lou and I think that theywere inspired by him.”
Polite preached the importance of hard workand dedication both in the classroom and in lifeto the students.
“All of these are important lessons, especial-ly at this young and developmental age and thisbeing summertime,” he said. “If you’re notworking that brain and that muscle, it getsfatigued and you forget what you learned. Soyou need to keep reading and stay active andgo exercise your brain so it will help retain whatyou learned the previous year.”
To hear Polite do such a good job gettingthat message across to the kids was music tothe ears of Gina Moon, youth services coordina-tor for the Broward County Libraries. It fell rightin line with the Summer Game Piece she andthe Dolphins have been promoting over theyears.
Each young participant in the program isgiven a pamphlet (or game piece set) to followthroughout the summer. It’s formatted like aboard game where the child gets to move his orpiece around the board after finishing a bookand collect all sorts of prizes.
“We printed 20,000 game pieces and we’rerunning out,” Moon said. “We’re asking themto read every day and make regular trips to thelibrary, and in return they get a chance to dosomething like this where they get to meet aDolphins player or a Dolphins cheerleader. They

motivate the kids with that message about put-ting in the extra work and we want them to real-ize that with hard work you can make a differ-ence.”
Judging by the reaction of the kids from themoment TD entered the room and throughoutPolite’s presentation, that message seems to behitting home.
Jeanette Sparano spent an afternoon in lateJuly with Ann Scott, wife of Governor Rick Scott,at the Delray Beach Public Library. Attentive boysand girls of all ages surrounded the First Lady ofFlorida and the First Lady of the Dolphins alleager to listen and to learn.
Jeanette Sparano followed Scott, who read“Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs,” by read-ing “The Great Kapok Tree: A Tale of the AmazonRain Forest.” T.D. the Mascot and two MiamiDolphins cheerleaders also were on hand toentertain the kids, some who came from theMilagro Center and the others from Palm BayPark and New Innovations, which are part of thecity’s summer camps.
Jeanette Sparano gave the last word on theevent, knowing that football was about to dom-inate her life once again.
“What I really want to get across to them isthat just because school’s out of session it does-n’t mean you just stop all the learning,” she said.“Don’t stop reading because when they get backto school, studies show it can take them up to amonth or six weeks and sometimes longer just toget to where they were in June, so not even toget ahead but just to regain what they lost. It justreinforces how important education is through-out their lives.”

This edition: Training Camp
What is it, or was it, about training campthat you dreaded the most?
Dansby: “Having to get in the cold tub every day.”Bokamper: “The morning practice always
out at St. Thomas. It was hot, it was yourfirst practice of the day and you knewyou had one or two more coming. You ended up doing the goal-linedrill and then gassers after prac-tice.”
How much of buildingteam camaraderieoccurs in trainingcamp?
Dansby: “A lot of teamcamaraderie is built during trainingcamp, just through the experienceand some of the hazing that goes on.There’s just a lot of team camaraderie that’sbuilt all the way around.”
Bokamper: “I think a lot does because you’retogether 12-13 hours a day in meetings and on the field,so there’s always some pranks or something to kind ofbreak the ice. I think those are the things that bring teamstogether and finding out which guys can gut it out for you.I think that goes a long way to trusting guys on yourteam.”
Is there a secret for notwearing down physicallyas you get deeper intraining camp?
Dansby: “The cold tub. That’s the secret. I dread it themost, but it works the best.”
Bokamper: “I think youget in better condition as yougo and you get in better shapeas you move on, so by the timeyou get to the regular season youshould be in good shape. I think youshould be in the best shape of the seasonwhen you come out of training camp, but coldtubs help.”
What are the mental challenges of trainingcamp?
Dansby: “I say the mental challenge is coming outeach and every day and giving the same effort. I think that’sthe hardest part of training camp is trying to give the same
effort each and every day.”Bokamper: “Just fighting the grind every
day. It becomes monotonous and I go backto the two-a-days when we used to be
in training camp for six weeksstraight, nine weeks when he had
six preseason games. It was thesame thing every day and everyweek and after you get two orthree weeks in you becomerobotic, so that’s the tough partof it.”
Any funny training campmoment you will always
remember?Dansby: “Oh man, the rookie
shows. That’s the funniest thing about train-ing camp. I had to dress up like Denny Green. I
dressed up like Denny Green and imitated Denny Green infront of the whole team and they loved it. That was aclassic. They tried to film it, but the coach wouldn’t letthem.”
Bokamper: “I think the funniest training campmoment I remember was when Lyle and Glenn Blackwood
and Joe Rose held Dan Marino hostage over los-ing his shoulder pads. It’s too long of a story
to get into.”
How important is it toestablish habits in train-ing camp that carry overinto the season?
Dansby: “It’s veryimportant. You have to start fastand if you start those habits in
training camp you should be ableto have a lot of carryover to the sea-
son.”Bokamper: “I think that’s what
training camp is about. I think it’s aboutfundamentals and making sure your fundamen-
tals are right, working on them every day. I usually wentinto training camp with one or two things that I wanted toadd to my repertoire, so I worked on those every day andevery game.”

J im Langer, the rock in the middle of theMiami offensive line during the Dolphins’championship years of the 1970s, was
enshrined in the Dolphin Honor Roll at Sun LifeStadium on Nov. 19, 1990.
Considered one of the greatest NFL centers ofall time and a hard-working and quick blocker,Langer was elected to the Pro Football Hall ofFame in 1987, his first year of eligibility. Manyqualified observers insist that Langer was themost proficient performer on a talent-ladenoffensive line that fueled Miami’s vaunted ball-control offense.
Langer joined the Dolphins as a free agent in1970, stayed with the club for 10 years throughthe 1979 season and then wound up his careerwith the Minnesota Vikings in 1980 and 1981. Inhis decade with the Dolphins, Langer developedfrom an obscure substitute to one of the finestcenters ever to play.
Coming out of South Dakota State in 1970 asa middle linebacker, Langer went undrafted andwas signed as a free agent by the ClevelandBrowns but was released on the final cut. Langerwas picked up on waivers by the Dolphins. Fortwo years, he saw only limited action as a guardand a special teams player. But in 1972, he wasswitched to center, won the starting job andanchored the offensive line which helped set athen-NFL record with 2,960 rushing yards. Infact, Langer holds the distinction of havingplayed every offensive down in the Dolphins’perfect 1972 season. He remained the NFL’smost dominant center as the Dolphins repeatedas Super Bowl champions in 1973.
Langer was named first-team All-Pro fourtimes and All-AFC five straight years from 1973to 1977 and was also picked for the Pro Bowl sixstraight times. During that period, he started in
three AFC Championship Games and SuperBowls VI, VII and VIII.
Continuing to play in spite of injuries, Langersaw service in 141 consecutive games from
1972 until a knee injury ended his Miami tenurewith seven games left in the 1979 season. Earlyin the 1980 campaign, he was traded to theVikings.

In a 27-9 victory over the Chicago Bears in aMonday night game at Pro Player Stadium,Ricky Williams became just the third player(fourth time) in NFL history to amass back-to-back 200-yard rushing games.
He ran for 216 yards and two touchdowns on31 carries. He joined Hall of Famers O.J. Simpson(1973, 1976) and Earl Campbell (1980) as theonly players to achieve this feat.
“He’s hard to tackle, and he made us lookbad,” Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher said. “He’sat full speed when he gets the ball. He makestwo moves while he’s still in the backfield. Hehits the crease, and he's gone.”
Williams had 119 yards by halftime. Hescored on a 15-yard run in the second quarter, then sealed the victory in the third quarter on asimple counter up the middle. A block by tightend Randy McMichael sprung Williams into thesecondary, and from there he outran the Bearsfor a 63-yard score and a 21-3 lead.
At halftime of the game, former FB LarryCsonka has his jersey No. 39 retired, just thethird Dolphins player ever to receive that honor, joining quarterbacks Bob Griese (No. 12) andDan Marino (No. 13).

From the pages of Dolphin DigestAndy Cohen column:
“It played so well on Monday Night Football,Williams becoming the first back since 1980 toput together two straight 200-yard games, with(Ricky) Williams almost single-handedly takingthe teeth out of the Bears. This guy is incredible. He’s already gained the 1,500 yards that theSaints needed to get a first-round pick out of theDolphins. Good thing they don’t get a secondone for 2,000 yards. Could challenge that one, too.”
Alain Poupart game story:
“The Dolphins weren’t going to spoil a greateffort by Ricky Williams two weeks in a row. Notplaying at home. Not playing against a ChicagoBears team that looks nothing like the one thatcaptured a division title with a 13-3 record onlyone season ago. No, on this night, the Dolphinsrode Williams’ second consecutive 200-yard rush-ing performance and cruised to an easy 27-9 vic-tory that helped them keep pace with the NewEngland Patriots in the hotly contested AFC East.”

Adam Richman was born and raised inBrooklyn and is a diehard New YorkYankees fan, but what stands out about thered-hot host of The Travel Channel’s “Manv. Food” and “Man v. Food Nation” showsis that he is just as avid a Miami Dolphinsfan.
No, it wasn’t a visit to the kitchen atMiami’s iconic Joe’s Stone Crabs that con-verted Richman — although he is intriguedby the prospect of setting up a food chal-lenge at the iconic Miami Beach establish-ment. One man by the name of Dan Marinosucceeded in making Richman bleed aquaand orange instead of the green and whiteof the New York Jets.
Richman has a history in South Florida. Hewas in town in February 2010 for a Super Bowlweekend special two-hour live telecast of hisshow. Richman visited Shula’s Steakhouse in theAlexander Hotel on Miami Beach to eat theirtrademark 48-ounce porterhouse steak in lessthan 20 minutes. Normally there is no time limitset and it is just that one needs to eat the hugesteak. Richman set a record by eating the 48-ounce porterhouse steak with 3 minutes and 23seconds left. It is reported that around 80,000people have so far taken up the challenge, andless than half of them could win.
Richman has successfully created his ownfood legacy in the mold of his sports hero,Marino.
How exactly does a kid fromBrooklyn end up rooting for theMiami Dolphins?
Richman: Great question. My older cousinKeith is the closest thing I have to a big brother, and he was an amazing athlete all through his
life and he dug the Dolphins. That was part of it.But ultimately the reason I’m a Miami Dolphinsfan is because of Dan Marino. I remember mylate father, who was the biggest football fan Ihave ever known, used to stress when I wasyounger that win or lose, you always have tocompete with honor. And I remember at a youngage really being struck by Marino. I alwaysremember that if the Dolphins lost, he took it onhimself. If someone else struggled, if (Mark)Clayton or (Mark) Duper didn’t have it that week,or his O-line caved in and they were hitting himwith blitzes like when (Mark) Gastineau wasplaying, he never threw anyone under the bus.And when there were moments when heabsolutely was the catalyst for victory, when hewould make a pass between a cornerback and areceiver that was like the size of an apartmentmailbox, he always gave credit to the receiversand his line. He was always the model of dignity.Marino is also very involved with autism becauseof his first-hand experience with his son. Sincethe good Lord has given me the opportunity togive back, I’m also very involved with autism
charities. To know that Dan, a guy whoplayed arguably the most brutal sport onthe planet, has dedicated his life to know-ing what autism means and help to mini-mize its effects, that’s football spirit.
Aside from Dan, who are someof your other favorite players?
Richman: I also loved Ricky Williams, and I wish he had come along a decadeearlier. Imagine Marino with a runninggame! I also met Drew Brees, and he’s areal football player both on and off thefield. My good friend Bobby McCray usedto play for the Saints, and I met Brees andyou’d think he was the Maytag repairman. He was warm, kind, and gave everyoneequal treatment. He even sent me a mes-
sage on Twitter! There are very few players that Ithink hold that standard, in terms of first meet-ing them.
Being a football fan for most ofyour life, what are some of yourmost memorable NFL moments?
Richman: It’s the little moments for me,like when Herschel Walker made that run withouthis shoe in Minnesota. It’s Drew Brees kissing hisson after winning the Super Bowl. It was Marinobreaking the yardage and touchdown records, orJason Witten making that run after the catchwithout his helmet. I also remember EliManning’s escape against the Patriots (in SuperBowl XLII). I was at a party with a friend of mine, and I remember looking around the room at abunch of strangers and we were all like clingingto each other and jumping up and down in dis-belief. Then all of the sudden there’s that (David)Tyree catch against his helmet. It was like, didCirque De Soleil draw up this play?
