History

The School of Fine Arts was established as a faculty at the University of Barcelona in 1978 when for the first time a five-year Fine Arts degree course was offered, with majors in Painting, Sculpture, Photography, Printmaking, Design and Conservation and Restoration. Then in 1996, in accordance with the University Reform Law (LRU), a new four-year course was launched and the revised curriculum included Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, Printma-king, Photography, Design, Conservation and Restoration and Art Education.

While the various specializations may have changed, the main fields of study and specific competences have continued to be available, along with courses in the various associated disciplines. However, whereas previously the generic degree in Fine Arts covered all op-tions, now with the advent of the European Higher Education Area the UB has diversified its course offering to address specific professional opportunities arising in the market-place. The Faculty’s current course offering includes three degree qualifications, as re-commended in the relevant White Paper and in line with previous agreements made at various meetings of the Faculty of Fine Arts Conference of Deans.

<<Degree courses>>

The main objective of the degree in Fine Arts is to tra-in students for professional artistic and creative activity, allowing them to exercise a commitment to contempo-rary society through their work and receive full recog-nition of their abilities. In addition, the course pre-pares graduates to be able to apply their knowledge to creative and experimental processes in both specific and cross-disciplinary fields, enabling them to develop artistic and cultural practi-ces in diverse formats and settings.Ultimately, the Fine Arts degree is designed to train creative artists to be com-petent in the visual arts and related fields and to give them a solid education in vi-sual culture, thus preparing

them for ongoing postgra-duate study in Spain or Eu-rope. All the above skills are seen as essential elements of fine arts study, as gra-duate professionals will go on to provide creative and innovative answers to new realities arising in twenty-first century society.

<<EHEA bachelor’s degree in Conservation- Restoration of Cultural Heritage>>

<<Degree courses>>

The degree in Conserva-tion- Restoration of Cultural Heritage is designed to train professionals to be compe-tent and qualified with the necessary skills to preserve our cultural heritage for fu-ture generations. It offers students training in the theoretical, practical, te-chnical and scientific areas of knowledge that underpin the skills and abilities requi-red for careful and thought-ful examination, diagnosis, documentation, preventive conservation, curative con-

servation and restoration of cultural assets. In a general sense, the ob-jective of the degree is to train conservator-restorers to be able to perform the essential activity of their profession: the preser-vation of cultural herita-ge. This is based on the knowledge, examination and diagnosis of cultural assets, preventative and curative methods of con-servation and restoration, and the documentation of the various processes and treatments involved.

the progressive elimination of borders between specializations. To promote comprehensive design training, giving stu-dents a sufficient knowled-ge base to be able contri-bute to the conception, development, planning and production of visual and cultural material in the so-cial, cultural, aesthetic and economic dimensions. Therefore, the UB EHEA bachelor’s degree in Design takes a generalist approach to the phenomenon of de-sign as a discipline and as a creative professional practice.
