The milieu of Stellenbosch offers a unique perspective to visual arts students: the intimate and supportive environment of a historical university town that is offset by the international, cosmopolitan and culturally diverse environment of central Cape Town, only 45 minutes drive away. The Department of Visual Arts occupies a historic, fully renovated building in oak-lined Victoria Street. We offer custom-designed studio and workshop spaces for our undergraduate study streams in Fine Arts, Visual Communication Design and Jewellery Design, including an industry-standard new media computer lab. In keeping with developments in contemporary art and design, the department’s ethos is multidisciplinary, supporting students working in all aspects of new media, including video and digital arts, as well as offering a solid foundation in traditional visual and applied arts practices.

In addition to the expertise provided by full-time staff members, students are continually exposed to industry professionals, either through visiting artists and specialists in the department, or field trips to major exhibitions, events or industry fairs.

Through all study streams, emphasis is placed on the production and critical evaluation of visual culture, rooted in addressing and reflecting all aspects of contemporary South African culture. The department also offers postgraduate study in Visual Arts, Illustration, Visual Studies and Art Education. Please contact Yumna Williams at +27 (0)21 808 3052 or [email protected] for more information in this regard.

A BA in Visual Arts provides the core technical and conceptual skills for careers as artists, designers, art educators and teachers, curators, art critics or historians. These skills are also much sought after in the broader creative industries, including film production, arts administration, museum and heritage work, publishing and journalism, architecture and interior design consulting, design and advertising industries, jewellery manufacture, and so on.

The popular preconception that a BA degree in Visual Arts is not career-focused is dismissed by the successes of graduates from this school who have demonstrated that they offer a highly attractive skills-set to potential employers. A BA in Visual Arts graduate is also by nature innovative and flexible, and thus very well suited to entrepreneurial work.

Art is a demanding and competitive career choice. It is a vocation: not simply a job. It is true that the art industry is a complex, competitive and demanding environment. When we refer to the ‘art world’, we are actually suggesting something of its special conditions, with it being a unique economy in which ideas about culture, language, taste, style, entrepreneurship, knowledge and value are constantly put to the test. A wide range of skills is therefore required to keep things on track. A degree in art is a degree in the kind of creative thinking that the new knowledge economy seeks out. So it’s less a question of getting a ‘real’ job, than having the imagination and skills to invent the job you wish to have.

Kuns is ’n veeleisende en mededingende

loopbaankeuse. Wanneer ons van die “kunswêreld” praat,

suggereer dit inderdaad iets omtrent die spesiale omstandighede van dié

wêreld, ’n eiesoortige ekonomie waarin idees oor kultuur, taal, smaak, styl, entrepreneurskap,

kennis en waarde voortdurend getoets word. ’n Wye verskeidenheid van

vaardighede is daarom nodig om sake op

dreef te hou.

The methodology of the programme prioritises self-directed, self-conscious practice. It is based on developing critical thinking and problem-solving abilities through creative work, within which parameters students are free to explore the most appropriate ways of realising ideas.

You will continue to discover and refine the content of your work through process, experimentation and being open to facing challenges. You have to be prepared to move outside of your comfort zone and to try out skills and ideas that you have maybe not yet considered.

Contact time with lecturing staff and tutors varies according to year of study. Second year students receive more structured attention than fourth year students, who are more experienced and who are therefore expected to work independently. On average, lecturers will spend 9 – 12 hours per week on undergraduate teaching, depending on the year of study. Being prepared is therefore critical, as time must be used effectively.

teaching METHODS

FINE ARTS

Studio practice will involve structured sessions specific to each year group, as well as self-directed, independent studio time, supported by consultations with lecturing staff, including visiting lecturers, and group crits.

A Visiting Artist lunchtime lecture programme (VAP) provides an opportunity for professional artists, curators, gallerists and art activists to share their work and experiences, and for you to engage them in critical discussions regarding contemporary art.

Jou ateljeepraktyk sal gestruktureerde

sessies, spesifiek aan elke jaargroep, sowel as selfgerigte, onafhanklike

ateljeetyd behels. Dit sal deur oorlegpleging

met die doseerpersoneel ondersteun word en

kritiese evaluering deur besoekende dosente

en die res van jou groep insluit.

The programme demands total commitment and dedication from students in order to achieve its goals, and we expect full and undivided engagement and participation – anything less than this and you cannot expect success. Remember that you are engaged in establishing – for yourself – the foundations and directions of a disciplined and exciting way of life. Expectations of you are high, so make sure that you grow and fulfil your own potential. The over-arching aim of the fine arts programme is fourfold:

the FINE ARTS course

To provide you with a broad a range of technical skills that are used in the production of contemporary artworks (2-dimensional, 3-dimensional and new media; performance, video, sound, installation, digital and computer arts, etc.).

To foster an understanding of the crucial relationship between form and conceptual thinking, and how the manipulation of material, process and technique can aid in the development of new insight, ideas and the production of knowledge.

In the first year of study you are exposed to a range of Fine Art disciplines - Book Art, Drawing, Printmaking, Painting, Photography, Sculpture – and some of the basic skills and techniques involved in each of these. During this year, the means of instruction is project-based. Throughout your first year you will be asked to complete a number of projects in the various disciplines mentioned above. For each of the projects completed you will be awarded a mark, the average of which will constitute a coursework mark.

1.

The fourth year is equivalent to an Honours year in a BA degree. This means that you are expected to work independently, with the support of lecturing staff in consultations and crits. Exhibition Practice and Professional Practice, including the Brown Bag seminar, provide the opportunity for professional development and group discussion. In fourth year students are required to produce a body of work that is mature in terms of both technique and conceptual content. The means of instruction at this level consists of regular individual consultation with members of staff and group crits conducted by members of staff.

4.

In your third year you are increasingly encouraged to produce artworks that are driven by your own particular interests and explorations regarding ideas and conceptual content as well as material, process and technique. During the first semester teaching is still project-based, even though greater freedom is encouraged regarding choice of material, process and technique. In the second semester, however, you are expected to produce works that are entirely self-initiated. As of the second semester, the method of instruction shifts to individual consultation between student and assigned tutor. Towards the end of the second semester, students are given the task of producing their own website and a catalogue of the year’s work as a first exercise in professional studio practice.

3.

what will you LEARN?

In terms of studio practice, to help you to develop a visual language that is personal and unique, and which you can articulate and defend in the public realm.

To assist you in becoming confident, independent and self-reliant in terms of studio practice.

YEARS OF STUDY

» »

» »

In second year you keep doing projects in the different Fine Art disciplines introduced to you in first year, including a number of projects in New Media (performance and video). At second year level the aim is to develop a more in-depth understanding of the processes and skills associated with each discipline. Greater emphasis is placed on conceptual thinking in relation to process, with the aim being to demonstrate the potential of each material, process and technique in order to help develop new ideas and conceptual content. The overall aim of second year is to encourage you to find your own particular interest, in terms of both concepts and mediums, on which to focus and expand in your third year. The means of instruction in second year is project-based. Throughout the year you will be asked to complete a number of projects in the various disciplines mentioned above. For each of the projects completed you will be awarded a mark, the average of which will constitute a coursework mark.

Studying Visual Communication Design at Stellenbosch University offers an environment that allows for the exchange of ideas and cross-fertilisation between different art forms, disciplines, departments and faculties on campus. As visual communication design is involved in all aspects of our lifeworlds these surroundings create a rich and rewarding learning experience for our students.

Visual communication design is a broad term encompassing graphic design, information design, instructional design, visual storytelling and various products of cultural and visual information. Featuring a broad range of media and formats, each of these visual messages is designed with a specific function, purpose and audience in mind.

Design practitioners of the 21st Century are facing a multitude challenges in much broader and complex strategic contexts than ever before. Material, environmental and social changes require future designers to anticipate problems and solutions rather than solving

only known problems. While technology is constantly changing and advancing design tools, the real pursuit for designers remains the same: to create content and meaning, and to make a positive contribution towards culture.

By encouraging a way of working that accepts the unknown and the unseen, the Visual Communication Design course focuses on optimising the designer’s ability to embrace uncertainty and rise to meet the challenges of the future.

Aangesien visuele kommunikasieontwerp

Visuele kommunikasie ontwerp is ʼn breë term wat grafiese ontwerp,

inligtingsontwerp, onderrigontwerp, visuele

storievertelling en verskeie produkte van kulturele en

visuele inligting omvat.

Our course aims to educate designers who can contribute to the advancement of the discipline as well as the development of social and cultural contexts and environments. Taking up a socio-critical position empowers students to conduct their design practices with necessary confidence and accountability.

Our course aims to develop a broad understanding in students of the role, purpose and possibilities of design. The course focuses on teaching students to generate meaning by organising and shaping information within specific social and cultural contexts. A multi-disciplinary approach to design directs these processes. Knowledge of both historical and contemporary developments in art and design thinking, philosophy, semiotics, sociology and industrial psychology assist students to understand a larger world of ideas and to challenge their own assumptions and perspectives.

the COURSE

In your second year the subjects for the intermediate level of the Visual Communication Design course are: Graphic Design, Interdisciplinary Visual Studies (photography, illustration, printmaking), Drawing, Digital Production, Visual Studies, a module in Sociology of Communication, and a semester course in Industrial Psychology. The aim of Industrial Psychology is to help students acquire a holistic knowledge of consumer behaviour to which they can respond with an appropriate marketing concept.

Subjects in the advanced fourth year are Graphic Design, Interdisciplinary Visual Studies (photography, illustration, printmaking) and Theory of Art. At this level, the Visual Communication Design course culminates in the integration of theory and practice, and the various disciplines and subjects. Through an expanded self-motivated research project you will respond to a social, cultural, environmental or urban problem of your choice. A research article that relates to your practical work will add further rigour and depth to your visual communication design solutions.

During your first year of study, you will investigate fundamental art and design concepts including the basic elements, principles and techniques in drawing, typography, illustration, photography, printmaking, design and digital production. Sociology and the major theoretical subject in this programme, Visual Studies, introduce critical concepts while at the same time broadening the social, cultural and creative visual fields.

In third year you continue with the same subjects as in the previous year. At this first advanced level, you are encouraged to integrate knowledge across these broad-based subjects (e.g. a community development project in collaboration with Sociology requires integrated research and participatory processes towards various design applications). Projects include working with real clients such as NGOs and communities in and around Stellenbosch. At this level, you are also expected to do an internship at a professional studio or creative enterprise of your choice.

what will you LEARN?Our approach to design is to tackle abstract and real-world problems hands-on, hearts-on, and minds-on. There are no shortcuts or ready-made solutions to great design. You will learn to embrace an intensive design process: in-depth exploration, experimentation, research and even play. By asking questions, and trying out different combinations and possibilities, you will learn to design through doing. Such an immersive approach will help you to think in terms of concepts and to take a critical approach to content. It will also teach you to give form to your ideas, developing your own visual language, and to take responsibility for your chosen points of departure.

Throughout the course, you will have ample opportunity to select and choose your own themes and topics within the strict creative parameters of projects. This flexibility empowers each student to take initiative in honing his or her own language, vision and identity as a designer.

Our course offers extensive opportunities to investigate the various possibilities of expression available to designers, including the full potential and applications of a range of media. The course also allows opportunity for acquiring know-how in terms of finishing and crafting designs professionally.

Creative jewellery design and metal techniques broadly refer to two interlinked aspects of jewellery: the visual conceptual design component on the one hand, and the technical execution / representation thereof on the other.

Jewellery design is a multi-faceted communication and representation tool – even in today’s world. How the body is adorned can reveal something about background, identity, mood, social standing, political viewpoint, cultural practices and growup allegiance. Jewellery can provoke, critique, record and humour, and its many messages are all around us.

Utilising a broad range of approaches, concepts and media, each of these aspects can be explored, understood and applied to own creations. This is the creative domain of our jewellery design students.

Ons program in Skeppende Juweelontwerp en Metaaltegnieke

bied omvattende opleiding, wat ontwerp is vir studente wat wye blootstelling aan ateljeepraktyk

We guide our students toward developing a holistic understanding of the critical discourse, role and possibilities of jewellery. Our course in creative jewellery design and metal techniques focuses on teaching students to create jewellery based on sourcing, understanding and organising various types of conceptual and visual information within specific contexts and concepts.

Knowledge of both historical and contemporary developments in jewellery design and technique, paired with a critical understanding of socio-cultural theories, enables students to understand a larger world of ideas, whilst challenging their own assumptions and approaches.

Our course aims to educate creative jewellers who can contribute to the advancement of the discipline, both in form and discourse. We encourage students to express themselves in their own specific style, whilst adopting an investigative and reflective approach towards their profession. Taking up a critical position empowers students to conduct their creative practices with the necessary confidence and accountability.

The programme in Creative Jewellery Design and Metal Techniques evolves continuously, whilst preserving the core design methodology of critical thinking, theory, practice and exploration. Both traditional and emerging technologies are integrated into the curriculum. The course guides students to identify their particular strengths and nurtures individual design interests, sensibilities and skills. Solid grounding in design principles and visual language skills, paired with mastery of a range of techniques, enables students to confidently push their boundaries, whilst remaining aware of the consequences of their creative output.

In second year the subjects for this intermediate level of the course in Creative Jewellery Design and Metal Techniques are: Jewellery Design, Metal Techniques, Production Techniques, Drawing, Visual Studies, Philosophy of Culture and Gemmology. The aim of Gemmology is to help students acquire a holistic knowledge of cut and uncut gemstones, so as to facilitate their correct identification, use, handling and evaluation in jewellery.

During the first year, students are introduced to fundamental art and design concepts and practices, such as the basic principles and techniques of drawing, printmaking, design and metal manipulation. A BA elective (English Studies, Afrikaans-Dutch, Philosophy, History or Classical Studies), together with the major theoretical subject in this programme, Visual Studies, introduce critical concepts, whilst simultaneously broadening the social, cultural and visual fields of students.

In third year, students continue with the subjects of Visual Studies, Jewellery Design, Metal Techniques and Production Techniques. At this advanced level, students are encouraged to integrate their knowledge and experience gained in each of these subjects. Additional supportive subjects, such as photography and Computer-Aided Design/Manufacture (CAD/CAM), enable students to broaden their skills.

1.

2.Subjects in the final and fourth year of the course are: Jewellery Design, Metal Techniques (includes work in Platinum), Production Techniques (includes work in Platinum), CAD/CAM and Theory of Art. At this level, the course culminates in self-reflexive integration of theory and practice in its various forms. Through an expanded self-motivated body of work, students respond to a theme, concept, idea and/or problem of their choice by positioning themselves within an appropriate theoretical framework in relation to their practical work within the scope of a research article.

4.

3.

what will you LEARN?

Our approach to jewellery is to tackle conceptual and practical challenges hands-on, hearts-on and minds-on. There are no shortcuts or ready-made solutions to convincing works. Students learn to embrace an intensive design process: in-depth research, exploration and experimentation. This immersive and personal approach helps students to think in terms of concepts and to take a critical approach to content. It also teaches them to give form to ideas, developing their own visual language in the process, and to take responsibility for their chosen points of departure.

Through trial and error, and constant critical reflection, paired with guidance and advice from staff, students thus mature into creative jewellers.

Our course offers extensive opportunities to investigate the various avenues of expression available to jewellers, including the meaning and potential of a range of different media. The course also ensures know-how in terms of commercial design and production methods.

Students usually work on their projects individually, but group discussions and formal presentations form an integral part of the course. VISUAL STUDIES

Visual Studies courses tend to adopt an overarching critical focus such as Marxist, post-colonialist or gender theory under which umbrella popular cultural (film, advertising, photography, social media) or so-called high art images may be explored.

The highly popular undergraduate offering poses questions that resonate with student’s experience of their complex life-world:

» How does rapidly changing technology impact human identity?

» How is our embodiment as raced, sexed and gendered persons negotiated by the visual?

» How do inherited cultural and political persuasions encode meaning in visual images?

» How can images subvert dominant western ideologies?

the COURSEVisuele Studies sal jou help om die wêreld as ʼn visuele

domein te interpreteer en sal jou toerus om die

komplekse tale van visuele kultuur, wat grondliggend

is aan aktiewe en betrokke burgerskap in die 21ste

eeu, te bemeester.

what is VISUAL STUDIES?Visual Studies is a relatively new discipline that brings critical theories from a wide array of fields including Art History, Media Studies, Sociology, Cultural Studies and Philosophy to bear on a host of visual objects. The interdisciplinary nature of the programme allows one to analyse objects originating from a variety of contexts such as fine arts, mass media, film, corporate communication, visual communication design, and architecture.

In a world increasingly mediated by the visual, to understand the production, circulation and reading thereof is essential. Visual Studies will help you to interpret the world as a visual domain and equip you to master the complex languages of visual culture that are fundamental to being an active and engaged citizen of the 21st century.

Dit is ʼn relatief nuwe dissipline waarin

kritiese teorieë vanuit ʼn verskeidenheid gebiede,

soos kunsgeskiedenis, mediastudies, sosio- logie, kultuurstudies,

filosofie, en so meer op visuele voorwerpe

toegepas word.
