TRAVEL ORGANISATIONS

INTRODUCTIONIt goes without saying that travel has had a fascination for man from the earliest times. No wonder it is an

ancient phenomenon. The some procedures as we witness in travel today we to be found in olden days. During these

days no travel formalities exicited. Travel is not only for pleasure. The travel of past was a merchant, scholar, pilgrim

etc….

TRAVEL ORGANISATIONS

The world bodies or the international organizations provide a platform where ideas are exchanged and problems of mutual interest discussed. For any industry to develop,an organizations is an essential prerquisite as it plays a vital role in its proper planning, development and growth. An organizations consists of individuals whose primary role is the achievements of the objectives for which it has been set up.

Tourism is a global industry. The growth and development of tourism industry witness great strides in the world. It extends world wide. To develop such industry association of an organizations is very essential. This association can be at various levels like national and international. The role of international tourism organizations in strengthening tourism by way combined efforts is,therefore,of vital importance.

There are numerous international organizations existing today. Some of these organizations develop and promote tourism at the international level to region. There are other international organizations which do not concern themselves specifically with tourism but with fields, indirectly connectly with tourism like airlines, travel agents and the hoteliers.

INTERNATIONAL AIR TRANSPORT ASSOCIATION – IATA

INTRODUCTION

As a result of rapid expansion in the network of international airlines in the year following 2nd world war,

many countries felt a need for worldwide regulation of air traffic and craft equipment. Consequently, President

Franklin D. Roosevelt of USA at Chicago called an international convention from November 1 to December 7,

1944. The convention constituted 2 permanent bodies namely International Air Transport Association (IATA) and

International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Both these organizations are the leading international agencies

looking after various aspects of world aviation industry including various problems and their solutions in the civil air

transport.

Page 4: FINAL PROJECT

But before reaching this position that it now occupies in the field of aviation, IATA passed through several

stages in parallel with the spectacular development of commercial aviation. It’s modest beginning date back to 1919.

Its predecessor International Air Traffic Association was found in that year. The association was founded by a group

of airlines of Western European Operators. Right from the beginning they recognized the need to co-operate in

setting up a network where everything needed to be rationalized.

In November 1944, World War II hostilities where taking a final turn, 54 states met in Chicago to lay the

first foundation of the new system that would soon be greatly needed by civil aviation. This conference led to the

creation of ICAO, the international body set up by government to establish universal norms for the technical

regulation of civil aviation. Indirectly this conference was also responsible for the foundation of the IATA, a non-

government body officially set up in Havana in April 1945, with 57 member-airlines from 31 countries, carried on

the task assumed by the former IATA. In 1999, IATA had more than 260 member-airlines.

IATA work becomes increasingly diversified, specialized extensive with the development of aeronautical

technology and the expansion of the airline network. With the arrival of jet towards the end of the fifties, a whole

series of new measures concerning technical matter, fares, procedures and organization was needed to replace

regulation that no longer corresponded to the new condition in the industry or to the growing potential of its market.

IATA is a global organization for the virtually all the international carriers. The principal function of IATA

is to simplify and speed the movement of persons and goods from any point on the world air network to any other

point by a combination of routes. This is accomplished by a single ticket purchased at a single price in one single

currency. The ticket is valid everywhere for the same amount and quality of service. The same principle applies to

the movement of freight and mail.

THREE FOLD TASK

Under the provision of its constitution IATA must carry out three-fold task:

Encourage the development of reliable, regular and economical air transport for the benefit of the people of

the world foster air commerce and study the problems involved.

Provide the means of collaboration among the air transport enterprises involved directly or indirectly in

international air transport service

Co-operate with the ICAO and other international bodies

SERVICES

Global planning of international time tables

The standardization of the inter company communication and reservation system

The international co-ordination of telecommunication network and computer system

The single formula for tickets and airway bills

Training of travel and freight agents

To regulate legal question of general concern, to develop security measures

Page 5: FINAL PROJECT

To examine and solve the problem arises by tourism and the flow of passenger and goods in the airport and

to establish procedures and technical norms.

ORGANISATION

IATA is a non-government organization. There are three IATA traffics

1. Western hemisphere

2. Europe, Africa and the Middle East

3. Asia and Australia

The traffic conferences are numbered in numerical order. Each TC covers number of countries. IATA TC is

an important adjunct to government. The rules, which IATA formulates, must be approved by Government involved.

IATA TC comes in after government has decided bilaterally upon the exchange of rights and after each government

decides individually what air carriers are going to serve their area.

MEMBERS

In order to eligible for the membership of IATA and the conference, an airline must hold a certificate for

scheduled air carriage from a government eligible for membership of the ICAO. There are 2 types of membership in

IATA. They are:

Active Member: Airline engage directly in international operation

Associate Member: Airlines engaged in domestic operation

RESOLUTION

Resolution of traffic conference of IATA is standardizing the tickets but also waybills, baggage check and

other documents. This resolution co-ordinate and unify handling and accounting procedures, to permit rapid interline

booking and connection. Resolution maintains a staple pattern of internal fare and rate of over 100 member airlines

all over the world. Standardization of fare is the most significant part of IATA’s work. This has resulted in

permitting the linking of the routes of many individual international airlines into a single public service system for

all nations of the world. In order to carry out so many functions, IATA has a staff of over 450 people through out the

world and operates with funds provided in the form of annual dues paid by the members.

INTERNATIONAL CIVIL AVIATION ORGANISATION - ICAO

The convention providing for the establishment of the international civil aviation organization was drawn

up the international civil aviation conference held in Chicago from 1st Nov to 7th Dec 1944. A provisional

international civil aviation organization (PICAO) functioned from 6 th June 1945 until the formal establishment of

ICAO. The ICAO was formally established on 4 th April 1947 as a specialized agency of United Nation. ICAO has

membership of over 130 government joined for the common purpose of promoting civil aviation on a global scale.

Page 6: FINAL PROJECT

The head quarter is located in Montreal, Canada. The organization has its regional office in Mexico City, Lima,

Paris, Dakar, Cairo and Bangkok.

OBJECTIVE

The main objectives of the organization are to develop the principles and techniques of International Air

Navigation and to foster the planning and development of international air transport with a view to

Ensure the safe and orderly growth of international civil aviation through out the world.

Encourage the art of aircraft design and cooperation of peaceful purpose.

The World Travel & Tourism Council, India Initiative (WTTCII) was launched in February 2000 to raise awareness of the crucial role that travel and tourism plays in the development and growth of the economy in India.

WTTCII invited key players of the industry to speak with a single voice to take Tourism forward. Under the patronage of Mr PRS Oberoi, Mr Krishna Kumar, Mr Lalit Suri, and with the active support of industry leaders, WTTCII in February 2000 identified priorities in a Manifesto.

In furtherance of this objective WTTCII authored a Status Paper - India, The Tourism Imperative in August 2001. This Paper was designed to analyze the status of tourism in India along with other indicators like India’s global share of tourism, competitors and also identified the roadblocks inhibiting growth.

Mission

The potential of the travel and tourism sector can be fully realized only if a supportive regulatory framework is in place. No single aspect of travel and tourism can succeed without increasing co-operation between the Government and the private sector.

Such co-operative endeavors, within a supportive regulatory framework, are vital to the development of a sustainable travel and tourism industry. WTTCII aims to advance this endeavor and to work together with private and public organizations to achieve these objectives.

The Vision

Our vision of Travel and Tourism is that of partnership between all stakeholders delivering consistent results that match the needs of our economy, our governments – both state and central and local communities with those of business based on:

Recognizing Travel and Tourism as a top priority; Balancing economic goals with people, culture and the environment; A shared pursuit of long-term growth and prosperity; Since its launch in 2000, The World Travel & Tourism Council, India Initiative (WTTCII) with the active

support of industry leaders, had identified priorities in a Manifesto. The Status Paper - India, The Tourism Imperative authored by WTTCII in August 2001 was presented to all the stakeholder of the industry and many issues raised were taken cognizance of. The liberalization process in India, the growth of the economy and public policy changes have resolved a number of issues. The steady growth of tourism in India has been due to a number of policy initiatives taken by the various Ministries of Government of India. Some of these are:

Galileo is a computer reservations system (CRS) owned by Travelport. As of 2002, it had a 26.4% of worldwide CRS airline bookings.[1]

In addition to airline reservations, the Galileo CRS is also used to book train travel, cruises, car rental, and hotel rooms. The Galileo system was moved from Denver, Colorado, to the Worldspan datacenter in Atlanta, Georgia, on September 28, 2008, following the 2007 merger of Travelport and Worldspan (although they now share the same datacenter, they continue to be run as separate systems). Galileo is subject to the Capps II and its successor Secure Flight program for the selection of passengers with a risk profile.

Galileo, a Travelport platform, is one of the world’s largest providers of travel content and a technology leader serving travel companies worldwide. Its global distribution services and commitment to partnership reduce operating costs whilst increasing efficiency and revenues for travel agencies, corporations and travel suppliers.

Galileo provides global distribution system (GDS) services for the travel industry through its computerised reservations systems, leading-edge products and innovative, Internet-based solutions. Galileo is a value-added aggregator of travel inventory, dedicated to supporting its customers and, through them, expanding choices for travellers worldwide.

Galileo is a member of IATA, OTA and SITA.

History

Galileo was founded in 1971 by United Airlines under the name Apollo Reservation System. During the 1980s and early 1990s, a significant proportion of airline tickets were sold by travel agents. Flights by the airline owning the reservation system had preferential display on the computer screen. Due to the high market penetration of the Sabre and Apollo systems, owned by American Airlines and United Airlines, respectively, Worldspan and Galileo were created in an attempt to gain market share in the computer reservation system market and, by inference, the commercial airline market. In response and to

Page 22: FINAL PROJECT

prevent possible government intervention, United Airlines started computer reservation systems and sought minority partners. Galileo International was the product of this reaction.

The Apollo reservation system is still used by United Airlines and Galileo International (now part of Travelport GDS) travel agency customers in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Japan.

Galileo UK was originally created from Travicom which was the world's first multi-access reservations system using the technology developed by Videcom. Travicom was a company launched by Videcom, British Airways, British Caledonian and CCL in 1976 which in 1988 became Galileo UK.

Recent Updates by the Company

Travel Agents now also book Amtrak Rail on the system and issue the tickets directly. Southwest Airlines has entered into a marketing agreement with Apollo/Galileo and travel agents

are now able to book reservations directly on Southwest. The development team at Travelport has developed an online search tool called ASK Travelport

where registered users can go and find out the answers to their frequently asked questions and queries.

After the take over of Worldspan by Travelport, now both the entities are jointly called as Travelport GDS.

In India, the distribution of both the GDS vests with InterGlobe. Recently Travelport and Amadeus held talks for a possible merger which would lead to the

biggest GDS in the world

internet connection should be very fast, that is, a broadband connection will make the job of system engineer very

easily. The staffs for international booking should be increased. Another branch should be a better idea for

developing the organization from country wide to national wide.

During the training period in Madura travel service (P) Ltd it enriches my knowledge and skills. I request

this organization to utilize more graduates and professionals, those who have competence in the field of Tourism

and Travel Management in future placements.
