& ..It becameAerogel! Discovered by Dr Samuel Stephen Kistler

BELIEVE IT OR NOTBut Aerogel was a result of a bet

Produced from Silicon Dioxide ( SiO )

First advertised in 1942 under the name of Santocel by Mosanto Corporation.HOW V R Santocel was discontinued in 1970

But every dark cloudhas a silver liningIn the 1980s people started gaining interest in Aero Gels yet again

Since it is non-polar and thus insoluble in water, a solventsuch as acetone or methanol are added for the reaction tooccur.

Inhaling alkoxides of silicons or metals are hazardous.

Alkoxides tend to be very expensive.

    Other alternatives : Waterglass Gelation.

    Disadvantages :

    2. Energy Absorbing Shock Absorbing Material !

Since it is brittle and has a very low density, the

collapse of the solid network occurs gradually,

spreading the force of impact out for a long time.

    Act as a shock-absorbing layer.

    3. Surface Chemistry

    Supercritical Extraction Process: surface consists

    primarily of alkoxy, -OR groups.

Carbon Dioxide Drying: surface exclusively covered by

    hydroxyl, -OH groups.

    Acidic. Strong hydrogen-bonding effect.
