The body is made up of 70-80% water. Water is one of the four main nutrients of the body.Why is Water so Important to Our Bodies?

All chemical reactions in the body take place in water. Every cell in the human body is bathed in water, which contains materials to keep them vibrant. Water is a transporter of nutrients and oxygen for proper function of the body’s tissues. Water acts as a natural air-conditioning through perspiration. Water is essential for digestion and absorption of vitamins and minerals. Water keeps our skin moist and supple, as well as a natural lubricator for our joints and internal organs.

Does Our Body Store Water?

The body keeps a reserve store of fuel, such as stores of fat, which can be tapped in emergencies, but although we are made up with 70-80% water, we have no built-in water tank to tap into when running dry. Water is involved in every bodily function, so it’s hardly surprising that its lack can lead to mental and physical breakdown. As dehydration becomes severe the result can be alarming, for example, loss of elasticity in the skin, muscular weakness, severe dryness of the throat, disorientation, and finally hallucinations.

How It WorksThere are two principal mechanisms by which activated carbon removes contaminants from water; absorption, and catalytic reduction, a process involving the attraction of negatively-charged contaminant ions to the positively-charged activated carbon. Organic compounds are removed by absorption and residual disinfectants such as chlorine and chloramines are removed by catalytic reduction.

ApplicationsActivated carbon filtration is very common in a number of home water treatment systems. It can be used as a standalone filter to reduce or eliminate bad tastes and odors, chlorine, and many organic contaminants in municipal (pre-treated or chlorinated) water supplies to produce a significantly improved drinking water. It is also very commonly used as a pre-treatment as part of a reverse osmosis system to reduce many organic contaminants, chlorine, and other items that could foul the reverse osmosis membrane. 0.5 micron carbon block filters are commonly used to remove cysts such as giardia and cryptosporidium.

What Contaminants Does Carbon Remove? Activated carbon filters remove/reduce many volatile organic chemicals (VOC), pesticides and herbicides, as well as

chlorine, benzene, trihalomethane (THM) compounds, radon, solvents and hundreds of other man-made chemicals found in tap water. Some activated carbon filters are moderately effective at removing some, but not all, heavy metals. In addition, densely compacted carbon block filters mechanically remove particles down to 0.5 micron, including Giardia and Cryptosporidium, turbidity and particulates. Although some iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide will be removed by these higher quality activated carbon filters, a manganese greensand iron reduction filter is generally preferred to remove these contaminants as the effectiveness of carbon filter against iron and manganese is generally short-lived if the contaminant concentration is high.

Carbon filters are NOT generally successful at removing dissolved inorganic contaminants or metals such as minerals/salts (hardness or scale-causing contaminants), antimony, arsenic, asbestos, barium, beryllium, cadmium, chromium, copper, fluoride, mercury, nickel, nitrates/nitrites, selenium, sulfate, thallium, and certain radio nuclides. Removing these contaminants requires either a reverse osmosis water filter system or a distiller (some can also be removed by KDF-55 or manganese greensand).

GAC does not remove sediment / particulate material very well, so they are often preceded by a sediment filter. Sediment pre-filters also prolong the activate carbon cartridge life by eliminating gross contaminants that would otherwise clog the activated carbon thereby reducing the surface area available for absorption. Carbon block filters are generally better then GAC filters at removing sediment.

What is KDF?KDF process media are high-purity copper-zinc formulations used in pretreatment, primary treatment, and wastewater applications. KDF media supplement or replace existing technologies to dramatically extend system life, reduce heavy metals, microorganisms, scale, lower total cost, and decrease maintenance.

Patented KDF process media are 100 percent recyclable and contain no chemical additives. Hospitals, restaurants, municipal water treatment facilities, and homes rely on KDF process media to safely reduce or remove chlorine, iron, hydrogen sulfide, heavy metals, and bacteria from their water.

KDF media utilize an old process in a new way-the oxidation and reduction of ions, known as redox. In short, the redox process works by exchanging electrons with contaminants. This give and take of electrons converts many harmful contaminants into harmless components, such as chlorine to chloride. Other contaminants, including heavy metals, bond to the KDF media, which greatly reduces or virtually eliminates these substances.

KDF process media control microorganisms in two ways. The first is a by-product of redox; the exchange of electrons sets up an electrolytic field in which most microorganisms can't survive. Second, the process of forming hydroxyl radicals and peroxides from some of the water molecules interferes with the microorganisms' ability to function.

If chlorine works so well in killing bacteria and bleaching and oxidizing organic food stains, what does it do to our skin, eyes, and lungs?

Chlorine plays havoc with our skin and hair because it chemically bonds with the protein in our bodies. It makes hair brittle and dry; it can make sensitive skin dry; flaky; and itchy.

There is also evidence that shows that chlorine can destroy protein in our body and cause adverse effects on skin and hair.

Hydromagnetic Conditioning Principles

It would be difficult to consider modern techniques without magnetism. Radar, television, radio, the electron microscope, cyclotrons in atomic energy, etc., could not work without the existence of permanent magnets to guide the electrons to increase their kinetic energy. It is well known that magnetic fields may have an effect on the behavior of dissolved matter as well as crystalline matter; it is therefore logical that these fields could act during the reaction in which these matters take a part, and more particularly, on corrosion and scale formation.

The operation of hydromagnetic conditioning systems is based on the fact that most scale-causing solids in fluid systems are diamagnetic. Typical scale-causing substances are calcium carbonate, calcium sulfate, gypsum, barium sulfate, sodium chloride, magnesium, sulfate, paraffin, oil waxes and grease.

A diamagnetic substance does not have a permanent magnetic moment. This means it will lose its polarity due to changes in pressure, temperature and/or time. When diamagnetic molecules are no longer magnetized, they lose their ability to repel each other. Without this ability, the molecules clump together, forming clusters too large to remain suspended in the fluid system. This results in the formation of scale that we commonly call “lime” (in water) or “carbon deposits” (in fuel).

This situation can be corrected, however. If diamagnetic substances are subjected to a magnetic field, they will regain their magnetism. In fact, they will take on the polarity of the magnetic field itself, a phenomenon called induced polarization. Once again able to repel each other, the diamagnetic molecules do not cluster, remaining suspended in the fluid system and eliminating both new and existing scale buildup (lime and carbon deposits). The ability to reverse existing buildup is important since it restores pipes and equipment to their original condition. This happens because the re-polarized molecules are able to re-polarize the other molecules that have settled out, suspending them once again in the fluid system.
