Dads Cycling Group Christmas Event

The dads cycling group held a fun afternoon ride and celebration in Ladywell Park in December. The group is made up of dads and male carers across Lewisham who love cycling and want to get their children and family involved. It was attended by Santa himself riding a Transport for London ‘Boris Bike’. The event was full of races, slalom rides, games and lots of yummy healthy food. The group also arranged for lots of safety equipment for the children donated by Lewisham Council. They received reflective bags, water bottles, lights, maps and safety information. The dads cycle group meets every term and plans rides on a monthly basis. One month will be a ride just for dads and male carers and the next month will be for the whole family. They are also planning longer rides for fathers such as a London to Paris ride this summer. Fathers and male carers can dip in and out of activities and attend when they can on the rides that suit them. If you would like to get involved with this friendly group and get fit and enjoy great company then contact Mike at [email protected] Rangefield Dads Trip to Godstone Farm

The dads of Rangefield School took their children on a trip to Godstone Farm. It was an icy day and lots of the animals were huddled inside, but the dads managed to make the most of it. More activities are planned for the future. Contact Tim on [email protected]

Write Away Project This is a borough wide project that has been put on by Lewisham Libraries, Children’s Centres and the Pre-school Learning Alliance. It is made up of a set of 4 workshops on Saturday mornings that children and dads attend at a local library. So far successful projects have taken place at Manor House Library and Forest Hill Library. During the time they have fun with literacy and even manage to write a story. This is published on the web so the children can see it at home or school. The project is delivered by a local author Loretta De Souza who is a children’s author and has written a book called Sonny the Sea Tractor. We are hoping to repeat the sets of workshops across different libraries in Lewisham in the future so if you are interested keep an eye out in future newsletters. Loretta will also be at the Dads Conference and Fun Day in March, where she will be reading her book, so look out for her there.

Fairlawn School Rocket Day Fairlawn School had a Saturday Rocket Day where the dads and children built rockets together and launched them in their school playground. The school has regular dads’ breakfasts and is currently developing activities for dads and children outside of the school day. Contact Tim on [email protected]

Lucas Vale Circus Skills Dads and children from Lucas Vale School had a fantastic evening of circus skills. The workshop, delivered by a father, showed the basics of circus skills including plate spinning, juggling, unicycling and balance. Practising circus skills develops the children’s confidence and motor skills and is a great way of dads and children learning something together. There are often opportunities to join in with a school circus skills workshop so if you and your child are interested then get in touch using the email at the bottom of the page.

First Aid for Dads

14 dads took part in a borough wide project to raise the skills of fathers in First Aid for their children. Quaggy Children’s Centre hosted a 3 week certificated course covering the basics in first aid. Knowing a few simple first aid techniques really can save a child’s life and deal with accidents that can happen. We plan to hold another dads first aid course in the spring term, so if you are interested in attending then get in touch. The course is held on a weekday evening over 3 weeks, which means that dads who are working can hopefully

attend too.

Dads in the Museum

Horniman Museum hosts a fantastic morning for fathers and children held every half term. The next event takes place on Saturday 26th February between 10.30am and 12.30 pm. It really is a fantastic opportunity to use your local museum and to interact with the things on display. You will get the opportunity to see behind the scenes, handle objects in their hands on base and enjoy a fabulous craft activity together. By going along to the museum you give your child a unique experience that raises their knowledge and understanding of the world. The morning is also fun and you get the opportunity to meet other fathers and children. If you would like to come along of have a question about the event then the details are listed below or you can visit the museum website at www.horniman.ac.uk/events/dads_group
