• The Americans started getting stomped
• The British backed off of New England and started fighting in the Middle Colonies

Who was Nathan Hale?
• He was a Colonial Spy from Connecticut
• During New York campaign slipped behind enemy lines
• Captured by the British
• Condemned him to death
• “I only regret that I have but on life to lose for my country.”
How bad was it?
• 1400 Americans were killed or wounded during the battle of Long Island
• Had to retreat into Delaware
• Soldiers sick and dying
• Moral was really low
• Thomas Paine wrote, “The Crisis” to encourage troops and colonists
What was the Battle of Trenton?
• The Colonists needed a victory• Hiding out in Pennsylvania• On December 25, 1776 Washington snuck
the army across the Delaware river into Trenton
• Surprised the troops and captured most of them.
• Raised moral – also lead to victory in Princeton, NJ
