Final facts & figures

This is the pair’s maiden meeting in the FIFA U-17 World Cup.

England and Spain faced each other in the final of the 2017 UEFA Under 17 Championship on 19 May.

The Iberians triumphed 4-1 on penalties in Varazdin, Croatia, after the match had ended 2-2.

This is the third continental derby in a U-17 World Cup final and the first between European sides,

following Nigeria’s 2-1 win over Ghana in 1993 and the same team’s 2-0 victory against Mali in 2015.

England have reached the U-17 World Cup final for the first time, whereas Spain are contesting their

fourth title-decider. La Rojita lost all of the previous three, 1-0 to Ghana in 1991, 1-0 to Brazil in 2003 and

on penalties against Nigeria in 2007.

England won the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2017. The only side to lift both youth trophies in the same year

were Brazil in 2003.

The African confederation has claimed the most titles, with CAF representatives winning a total of seven

(five for Nigeria and two for Ghana), followed by CONMEBOL and UEFA on three apiece, CONCACAF with

two and AFC with one.

A UEFA representative is certain to win the title, eight years after Switzerland became the last European

winners in 2009. The Swiss themselves followed in the footsteps of Soviet Union, victors in 1987, and 2001

champions France.

Four finals have been decided by penalty shoot-outs and the only team to be involved in two such duels

were Nigeria, who won one and lost the other.

The 16 finals played to date have yielded 35 goals, averaging 2.19 per match.

The highest-scoring title-clincher was Ghana-Brazil, which finished 3-2 in 1995. By contrast, two finales

ended goalless, namely Brazil-Australia in 1999 and Nigeria-Spain in 2007.

The most frequent scorelines in the U-17 World Cup final are 1-0, 2-0 and 3-0, which have each occurred

three times.

The earliest goal following kick-off in a final was netted by Nigeria’s Wilson Oruma, who scored three

minutes into his side’s 2-1 win over Ghana that decided the 1993 edition.

Play-off for 3rd place facts & figures

Brazil and Mali have already faced each other once before in the U-17 World Cup, sharing a 0-0 draw in

the group round of the 1999 edition.

Brazil have contested the consolation match twice before, overcoming Guinea 4-1 in 1985 and losing 4-3

to Germany in 2011. Mali are competing in their first play-off for third place, after finishing runners-up two

years ago.

The 16 third place play-offs held to date have produced 50 goals, averaging 3.12 per game. The highest-

scoring match was Germany’s 4-3 win over Brazil in 2011. Three meetings went to penalty shoot-outs, all

of which were won by South American sides. The most frequent result is 2-1, which has occurred four

times.

CAF and CONMEBOL have an even head-to-head record in the third place play-off, with Brazil beating

Guinea 4-1 in 1985, before Burkina Faso defeated Argentina 2-0 in 2001.
