Greetings! I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to serve another term as the Brookside Business Association President for 2015. I look forward to another successful year. The respective associations from Brookside, Waldo and Southtown recently completed the annual board retreat. This year we were honored to hear from one of Kansas Citys treasured individuals – Mr. Jim McGraw. He shared with us keys to success that he gained first hand while working with Mr. Ewing Kauffman at Marion Laboratories. He explained that by treating others with respect, sharing with those who produce results and giving back to society, we all could be successful in whatever we do. For the coming year, I have challenged myself to uphold these values as I serve on the board and run my business. I extend that challenge to all of you. Brookside continues to grow and many changes have occurred, including business expansions, renovations, and new ownership in the area. I am also proud to say that several businesses have celebrated major anniversaries this past year: Brookside Toy and Science – 50 years; Worlds Window - 30 years, and Lauren Alexandra – 20 years. Congratulations to your continued success! I would like to extend a warm welcome to all to attend the monthly networking events and luncheons and activities sponsored by all the organizations to learn more about the Community Improvement Districts to see how these organizations better the community. Again, thank you for the opportunity to serve on the board. I will do my best to ensure we keep growing in a positive direction. Bling in Brookside

The New and Improved Mike’s Wine and Spirits

Brookside Jewelry, 306 W 63rd

Street, has been helping customers look their best for the last ten years! They provide a full-service jewelry store, with a specialized machine to hand engrave items, even glass. Owner Carl Cuda is one of the only hand engravers in the region. The large selection of vintage and unique antique jewelry offers a much different variety than other area jewelry stores. Cuda is happy to offer appraisals on fine jewelry. If you need to repair your watch or that precious piece of jewelry, Brookside Jewelry is the place to go. One can find the charm of Brookside inside this quaint shop and will be met with personal service to ensure that the customer receives the best of care. This Valentine’s Day, remember to visit Brookside Jewelry for that one-of-a-kind gift from the heart. Hours: M-F 10am-5pm, Saturday, 10am-4pm.

Mike’s Wine and Spirits, 8447 Wornall Rd., has been at this location for the past fourteen years. This two-generation, family-owned business provides a wide array of beer, wine and spirits. They have tastings, cater events and provide wedding consulting. Recently, the business was expanded into the vacant storefront next door, thus doubling the size of the store. Everything is new inside from the flooring to the roof. The new LED lighting brightens up the space. New coolers and other equipment shine, and the inventory has been doubled. Owners Mike and Pat Doohan are pleased with the new look and invite you to come and see. Check out their great prices.

The store is open 8:30am to midnight Monday through Thursday, 8:30am to 1:30am Friday and Saturday, and 9am-midnight on Sunday. Congratulations to Mike’s Wine and Spirits for being Waldo’s February Best!

Bona Terra Salon– Brookside East is Sparkling!

Bona Terra Salon, 414 E 63rd

Street, is a newly constructed salon in the Brookside East Property. The project began in July, 2014 when the owners contracted George Cevillo, the premier Avada Salon designer in Hammond LA, to design the Salon interior. During the design phase, Etopa, the Aveda furniture and fixture company, was selected to provide the interior equipment and Kansas City’s Kessinger/Hunter was selected as the general contractor. Construction of the salon began August 15, 2014 and the Grand Opening was celebrated in December. Bona Terra Salon has highly trained team members that will exceed your expectations. The goal is to provide services that complement you and your lifestyle while customizing a home-care program and maintenance schedule that fits your needs. The services include hair design, coloring, skin, waxing, makeup and nails. Laster Industries, owner of Brookside East, began a makeover of the property (previous home to Blockbuster) in July 2014 by placing canopies on the front of the building, dividing the space into separate storefronts, paving the parking lot, removing and trimming the trees and placing the chess piece (pawn) logo, on the existing, pole and along the face of the building. Laster Industries occupies one of the spaces. Additional businesses are expected in the remaining spaces. Special thanks to Colonel and Pat Laster for adding beauty to 63rd St. and congratulations on being the February Sparkle recipient. Bona Terra Salon hours: Tues-Fri: 9am-7 pm, Sat: 9am-3pm. For appointments call (816) 214-5290.

Thank you to the following organizations that joined/renewed their membership with the Southtown Council for 2015 during the month of January 2015:

ScaleUP! KC Many business owners have difficulty moving beyond $150,000-$750,000 in sales. For five months ScaleUP! Kansas City will immerse 12 to 15 entrepreneurs in courses and “collisions” that will connect them with a high caliber network of peers, resources and mentors and change the trajectory of their businesses. Apply in March to be part of the summer cohort of selected entrepreneurs for ScaleUP! KC and drive your business to even greater heights. You can be part of this elite cohort of growth-oriented businesses if you: lead a company that has been in business for at least 2 years; generate annual sales between $150K and $750K; have a strong market that can generate more than $1 million in sales, and strive to drive your business to greater heights. Courses are supplemented with Kauffman Founders School, peer-to-peer roundtables and “collision” sessions that unite you with subject matter experts. Applications for the second cohort will open in March 2015. Congratulations to the recently selected inaugural group of Cohort 1 including our own Raymond Okuagu, Premier Engineering Consultants, a member of Southtown Council. Each year, the board members of the Southtown Council, Waldo Area Business Association, Brookside Business Association and the Brookside, Waldo and Troost Avenue community improvement districts spend an afternoon together discussing and working on plans for the future. This year a SWOT analysis was conducted, which explores Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. Special thanks to Jennifer Furla and Laura McCray with HCap Search, Mary Cyr with Cyr Nonprofit Consulting and Jim Dawson with Fairway Consulting Group for facilitating the sessions.
