And through his compassionate heart, his agile mind, through his healing touch, his knowledgeable teaching, through his steadfast faith, his enduring courage, through his broken and beaten body, Jesus was the embodiment of love. I don’t know if it is because of my stage of life or if it is because of the seeming impa- ence and anger simmering in the world around me, but I find myself more swiſt to anger and frustraon than to respond with generosity and love. And when I move towards frus- traon and anger, I find that I remain there for a bit, casng a negavity over my realm of being. That is not the core of who I am. I know that. The Christmas ornaments have all come down. The crèche pieces have each been carefully wrapped in tissue paper and placed in their boxes – packed away for safe keeping until next year. Almost all of the physical symbols and reminders of Christ’s birth, of God’s incarnation have been put away. God, the source of life and of unconditional, radical love came to us in our own form, human form. And through his compassionate heart, his agile mind, through his healing touch, his knowledgeable teaching, through his steadfast faith, his enduring

courage, through his broken and beaten body, Jesus was the embodiment of love.I don’t know if it is because of my stage of life or if it is because of the seeming impa-

tience and anger simmering in the world around me, but I find myself more swift to anger and frustration than to respond with generosity and love. And when I move towards frus-tration and anger, I find that I remain there for a bit, casting a negativity over my realm of being. That is not the core of who I am. I know that. I am -we are created in the image of God. We are created in the image of radical, unconditional love. And we are recipients of that same liberating love, as time and time again God seeks us out and invites us into relationship.

How can we become more aware of how we too reflect within ourselves the embodi-ment of love? I am not talking about the love described in those mushy greeting cards. But love that does not demand perfection, love that embraces the messiness and dark-ness of ourselves and others and chooses to journey together on the road to wholeness and healing. I am talking about love that seeks out connection with those most different from ourselves, and strives to listen, to learn about and to celebrate both connections and differences.

God’s love, that stirred as God created the heavens and the earth, as God created human beings in God’s likeness, the love that became incarnate in the tiny child of Jesus, continues to be embodied in this world through each and every one of us. We are not God. We are human beings created in God’s image, carrying within us a reflection of the divine, and having been graced with being the recipients of God’s unending love. We are liberated by the grace of God’s love for us. That liberation and that love transforms us to together become ever more than we ever dreamed we could be. With my hand, and your arm, and his legs, and their feet, and the young ones’ mouths and her eyes, and each of our hearts, we together are the embodiment of God’s love here on earth.

We are not God; but together we are an incarnation of God’s love for all humanity.

Parish News & Opportunities

BREAKFAST WITH THE BISHOP Bishop Rob Wright will lead the program at the first Men's Breakfast of 2017 on Tuesday, Feb. 14. All St. Luke’s men – and their friends and colleagues – are invited. As anyone who has ever heard him knows, Bishop Wright is an engaging speaker! Coffee is served at 7 a.m. with breakfast starting at 7:30 a.m. The program is from 8-8:30 a.m. $5 at the door. You can make reservations online or by calling 404-873-7777.

Congratulations to Caleb Lloyd for attaining the Boy Scouts' highest achievement - Eagle Scout. Alex

Sherrill was on hand for the ceremony as were other St. Lukers who had supported Caleb's project. Among the others attending were Connie and Sonny Wooten, Jackie Lawrence, Brenda Sherrill, Chris Kinney and Nancy Adams.

Caleb looked to the needs of the church when he chose his project: restoring the old garden boxes at Holy Com-forter Episcopal Church and building 4 new ADA-com-

pliant garden boxes and compost bins. He raised money to cover the costs and recruited volunteers' help. Caleb is a member of Troop 101 in Inman Park. Congrats to mom April for raising an Eagle Scout!

tion from the University of West Georgia. Martisia already has a job teaching school.

Six more Dreamers are on track to gradu-ate in 2017:

• Fred Welch, Georgia Southern University, BBA in Accounting

• Jolicia Grimes, Georgia State Uni-versity, BS in Psychology

• Chris Hunt, Middle Georgia State University, BS in Criminal Justice

MEMBERSHIP HAS ITS PERKS Plans are being made for the next Inquirer’s Class, an adult confirmation class that leads to full membership. It will begin on Sunday February 5, so mark your calendars. If you are new to St. Luke’s or just never got around to officially transferring your membership, this is a great opportunity to take that next step. To learn more about becoming a member of St. Luke’s or participating in the Inquirer’s Class, contact Mark Simmons at 404-873-7624 or [email protected]. We would love to visit with you about the process.

A Sunday 2.0 Book Study on how we as parents, grandparents and Godparents can help our children grow into generous and grounded people begins February 19 at 4 p.m. and runs for three weeks during 2.0. Grab a copy of the New York Times bestseller, The Opposite of Spoiled: Raising

Kids Who Are Grounded, Generous and Smart About Money, and join The Rev. Lauren Holder for a lively conversation. The book, by New York Times “Your Money” columnist Ron Lieber, has been called “a taboo-shattering manifesto that explains

PRAYERS FOR PEACE Peace in Our Time, St. Luke's prayer service, is moving to the THIRD Sun-day of each month. Join us in the Bell Tower this month on Sunday, February 19 at 6 p.m. to pray for an end to gun violence and terrorism.

In February, we're filling the Outreach baskets with ground coffee, powdered creamer and sugar for the Church of the Common Ground (CCG). CCG is a worshiping community of the Episco-pal Diocese of Atlanta. It is a “church without walls” on the streets of Atlan-ta, providing support for the pastoral and spiritual needs of women, men and youth who live on the margins of our city. CCG celebrated its 10th anniversary on Christmas Day.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN WITH ST. LUKE'S GARDENERS

Six volunteers from St. Luke’s, plus professional landscape designers Vicki Proano and Jeff Raines, were back at work last month helping beautify the grounds of Emmaus

House. Sue Sherrill reported "we raked leaves and cleaned the Wedding garden, the Easter garden, the Rose garden, and began cleaning the Secret garden. Forty bales of pine straw were delivered, and we spread it all. We filled at least 30 bags of leaves, sticks, and other yard waste. We think one more short morning, probably less than 2 hours, plus perhaps 15 bales of pine straw and 4-5 of cypress mulch will finish the job in these four gardens." Thanks to the members of the Mustard Seed Garden ministry for taking their rakes on the road and supporting Emmaus House!

how talking openly to children about money can help parents raise modest, patient, grounded young adults who are finan-cially wise beyond their years.” All are welcome - this class is not just for parents! Questions? Mo. Lauren at [email protected].

FAITH AND FILM gathers on Friday, February 10 at 7 p.m. to watch Spotlight, the true story of how the Boston Globe uncovered the massive scandal of child molestation and cov-er-up within the local Catholic Archdiocese, shaking the entire Catholic Church. Faith and Film is a monthly opportunity for St. Luke’s adults to share a movie, snacks, fellowship, and a lively discussion of issues of faith raised by the film. Those who attend bring a snack to share and a beverage. All St. Luke’s adults are welcome. For location, contact Donna Church (404-522-3889 | [email protected]).

completely overwhelmed. Negative feelings like depression, anger, frustration and anxiety can increase your body sensitivity. The tension and pain in the body leads to the sensation that pain is controlling everything in your daily life.

Alarming signs are:• Feeling alone and excluded of social life• Negative thinking and worrying• Sleeplessness and lack of concentration• Feeling depressed and drainedIn this Chronic Pain Group we will gain more knowledge about

the impact of chronic pain on our brain and body. We will reflect on our common experiences with chronic pain. While sharing our wisdom in coping with pain we can feel less alone. We will engage in mindful brain-bodywork and thoughtful breathing exercises and BioLateral Sound Healing to reduce stress and recognize resources for wellbeing in our brain and body.

STRESS BALANCE WORKSHOP MINDFUL BODYWORKThe word "stress" is generally used when people feel over-

loaded or overwhelmed with the pressure placed upon them. External stressors cause a lot of internal alarming reactions to our body and mind. We can feel out of balance with the sensa-tion that stress is controlling us.

Alarming signs are:• Tension and pain in the body• Anxiety and panic attacks• Negative compulsive thinking and worrying• Sleeplessness and lack of concentration• Feeling depressed and drained In this Stress Balance Workshop, we will gain more knowl-

Mindfulness is the practice of raising your awareness to the present moment, without judgment, and with acceptance. When you observe your thoughts, emotions, and experiences with increased awareness, you can in turn develop a deeper sense of gratitude. Additional benefits to practicing mindfulness can include:

As Lent approaches, consider what changes you want to make in your life. Whether it is giving up an old habit or taking on something new, Lent gives us the opportunity to deepen our relationship with Christ and those around us through change. Mindfulness is an effective way to facilitate that change by help-ing us develop a greater connection with ourselves – which, in turn, leads to stronger relationships with others.

Group Sessions: 6 weeks for approximately 90 minutes, once per week. Groups will consist of mindfulness exercises (meditation, body awareness, mindful movements) and discussions. Day/time/location will be announced.Dates: TBD, will start as early as March 2nd and end the week of

April 9th. Cost: $210 for 6 weeks ($35/session).

Help Keep this Very Busy Parish Organized! If you are the leader of an event or meeting, here are some tips to help you succeed.

STEP 1Get on the calendar - and, if you need space at the church, make a room reservation. To place an event on the calendar, contact Parish Admin-istrator David Lowry - you can send an email to [email protected] or give him a call at 404-873-7663. Da-vid needs to know the name of your event, date, time, location and contact person with phone number and/or email address. If you are requesting the use of facilities on the church campus, you must first contact the clergy in charge of your ministry area.

STEP 2Get the word out.Contact Hala, our director of communications, for help with public-ity. We have several different vehicles for getting information out, including The Shepherd's Voice (our newsletter), The Shepherd's Notes (our weekly email newsletter), the Welcome section of the bulletin, Facebook, our website, and email blasts. If you need an online sign-up, Hala can create this on the church website. She can also help you with invitations or other printed materials you may need for your event.

You should contact Hala 4-6 weeks prior to the event or meet-ing, so there is plenty of time to design and produce whatever you need. You can reach Hala by email at [email protected] or 404-873-7630.
