A. School Level Data

The Redan Middle School was opened in August of the 2003-2004 school years. It is located in central Dekalb County and serves children from five outstanding feeder schools. The school is committed to creating a nurturing, effective, and challenging educational climate for all of its children. We encourage and ensure that each student reaches her/his maximum academic, social, and physical potential and prepare our students to become productive and successful citizens in the 21st century.Redan Middle School features integrated technology instruction. All core area classes (language arts, science, math, and social studies) have stationary computer units to challenge students at all grade levels. In addition, it also has a Computer Writing Center, a Technology Education Lab, a Business Education Classroom, and a Media Center all of which integrate life skills with academics and challenges students to become critical thinkers. The school has 3 computer labs outside of the media center. It contains two office spaces, one storage room, one audio/visual room, one media production room, and one conference room. A total of 20 computers with 2 printers, scanner, 10 multimedia carts, and smart board are available for student use in the media center. The analysis of the media center collection is

There are 965 students in our school with a Principal, 3 administrators, 70 teachers, 1 media specialist, 1 CTSS, 2 counselors, 4 secretaries, 1 registrar, and 1 bookkeeper. The ratio of teacher and student is 14 with 304 students on 6th grade, 333 students on the 7th grade, and 328 students on 8th grade. The breakdown of the students based on race/ethnicity and subgroups is given in the table and chart form below. There are 10 core area teachers with 3 special education teachers on the 6th grade, 12 core area teacher with 4 special education teachers on the 7th grade and 8th grade, 3 special education teachers with 3 paraprofessionals for MOID and MID students. We also have 1 ESOL teacher, 1 Math tools teacher and 2 coaches (Lang Arts & Math). The rest of the teachers are connections like PE, music, art….

B. Topic Area Data

The grade level, I have selected is the 6th grade and the content area is Math. In this grade we have three math teachers with one collaborative teacher, and one resource teacher. We have a total of 304 students and the analysis of the student is given below. There are 11 students in a self contained (resource class) and 14 are being served in a collaborative setting. There are 2 ESOL students who are pulled for an hour by the ESOL teacher. Based on Math CRCT data from 5th grade we determined that there are 57% Level 1, 41% Level 2, and 3% Level 3 students. If you look at the data it is clear that our students need help in Math. Also the scores for Reading CRCT are 16% Level 1, 71% Level 2, and 13% Level 3. Our students are meeting the standard in reading but dropping the ball when it comes to math. The Lexile scores were used to determine the reading levels of the students and based on these scores the students and teachers decide on appropriate level of reading.

Part II Curriculum review/mappingA. Key units and Georgia GPSs. I have decided to look at the 6th grade Math Standards and the tables below will provide the identified key units of study and assessment products/end strategies which interpret and summarize the focus of standards. I am concentrating on the standard of Data Analysis and Probability, Geometry, and Measurement which the students actually start learning from Kindergarten and they build up on this each year. The three tables provide the overview of the standards along with the resources, projects and activities that go with it. At the beginning and end of every six weeks the pre and post test (Benchmark test) are given and the data is used to enhance the learning. The other assessments include projects, portfolios, oral assessments and higher order thinking questions.

Collection Evaluation & Development PlanPart III: Collection Evaluation

A. Quantitative Approach (Collection-Centered & User Centered approach): To assess the Math collection at our school, I began by examining the collection from a collection-centered approach. I evaluated the physical appearance of the books and the overall visual appeal of the section to students. The sections were labeled with Dewey numbers and keyword labels that made the section easily accessible. On the tops of the shelves near the section, the media specialist displayed books about Math Topics. After spending time pulling books and flipping through pages, I determined that most were in good shape, with little wear and damage. From the user-centered approach, I want to know how the resources are being used in this media center. You will notice in the chart below that not many Math books or videos are in circulation. When I approached the teachers they said they have so many online resources (like Unitedstreaming.com) and other resources that they didn’t check this out. The students were not self motivated or prompted to check the math materials. The teachers and students both mentioned that they will start using these resources more.

B. Qualitative approach (Print and Non print)After determining that the quantitative data indicates that there are sufficient books on the standards of data analysis, geometry, and measurement, I wanted to evaluate the quality of the books to which the students have access. The books had good information but were not being used much. When the media specialist was asked about statistics that relate to items that have been added to this section, she responded that she pays close attention to Math part because that is our critical area and try to add thing to this section to provide teachers and students with current resources. I found that the collection was lacking in many multicultural aspects. While some of the actual books depict characters and individuals of several races, I did not find any books written in Spanish in this section. I chose to evaluate the non-print aspects of the collection and found the related videos which are listed in the chart below. Currently, no E-Books have been purchased for the media center or teacher use.

C. General description

The Dewey 500 section of our library is comprised of 1109 items and only 166 are math books. The average age of these titles is 2000 and it is 1.57% of the books in the media center. The condition of all books is "like new." A review of circulation statistics reveals that the types of books most checked out are as fiction books with 42% circulation this year so far and Math circulation being 0.88%. The overall audio visual circulation for our school is

12

Page 13: Farooqi collection development

FRIT 7134Aysha Farooqi

Collection Evaluation & Development Plan2.65%, the professional books circulation is 0.14% and reference is 1.02%. The data is not very pleasing. The media center does not have any magazines that are specifically related to Math. However, the media center does subscribe to some online resources like brainpop.com, unitedstreaming.com and other that are a great help.

D. Dewey and descriptionBelow you will find the chart with the different Dewey # (510 sections and other) which contains the materials on the above standards including the print and non-print. It also gives the details of the number of products available and how many are in circulation.

Collection Evaluation & Development PlanAfter investigating several vendors of books and audiovisual

equipment, I need $3,419.41 to update and add to the three standards (mentioned above) collection at our school. I found several books based on the difficulty level of the students and audio visuals. Based on our collection I felt there is a great need to the audio visual section of Math, as we have a lot books but very few DVD’s and videos. In addition, I found a few e-Books to provide an alternative medium for students and teachers to use and a software program that would greatly enhance the learning experience for students in the classroom. I kept in mind the different needs of our students like English Language Learners, students with special needs and also got some multicultural related books in math. The different language books are in pink font, multicultural and special needs are in green font

The tables given below are separated by vendors like FLR, Library video, Magazines bought, Databases, and the last is an Excel worksheet and you can view the entire worksheet if you double click on it which includes vendors and websites like Amazon, estore.keybookshop.com, btsb.com, and bn.com. For some of the reviews we have to click on the link which will give us the description and review. About $ 200.00 can be spend on buying supplies needed to teach the lessons like big chart papers, geometric shapes, graph papers and shipping and handling.

The following budget summary will clearly highlight that that my collection acquisition goals have been adequately addressed.
