Dear Fr iendsAs th e Jleenors have been busy getting r^ady to sai l for Japan we are sending

a mimeographed sheet again* Perhaps by ne^it issue w can have the Japan Joiu:n^aga ine have some encooiraging things to rep ort. The Bible School is showing agradual increase in attendance. There are more women coming to the Wednesday women ^8meetings and some are again attending the morning church services sin ce the sermonsare not so long and di f f icu l t There are new people coming and some of the formerChristians are showing more in teres t

Mr, Paul Ito, who left our seminary to enter the Union Seminary a year ago lastspring, has again returned to the Tokyo Bible Seminary. e are happy over this andsince he made the decision himself, we feel that he will now make a faithful preacherof the gospel. The Union Seminary has many denominational teachers and some of thema re modernidt i w.

The Christian 9adio Mission had a request fo r some short devotional programs bysome of the radio stations in Japan. They asked Harold Sims, who is an accomplishedorganist, to play the Hammond organ. The scripture and poems were read by the Ma^bashi Seminary student, Mr. Sugiura. These will be used by a nuipber of stationswithout charge and by this means the gospel message in music and scripture vdll beca r r i ed to t housands

I visited the Itagakis at Kashiwa last week. I was surprised at the nev/ homesthat have sprung up all around where they are living. This means more people to bereached fo r Christ. Mr Itagaki said that here there is a greater interest shovm inthe services. Mrs. Itagaki has a new position in a kindergarten in the same tovjn,as Mr. Itagaki v/rote me in English, ^'fifteen minutes, leg go fast from the i r home.As the former kindergarten was Buddhist, we are glad of the change where she can bef r ee r to give a Chris t ian witness .

This i s the f e s t i va l t ime when the ^Omikoshi i s taken out o f th e s hrin es andcarried about the s t reets by young men a l l dressed in the same kind of blue and whitecotton kimona. The Omikoshi resembles the ancient Ark of the Covenant and manyJapanese scholars think they have Jewish background. They r ush her e and there chanting as they go f ol lowed by a crowd of onlookers. Then they res t and dr ink sake(Japanese wine) in one of the shops that has been decorated fo r the occasion. Oftenthere are tiny Omikoshi carried by small boys. Everyone has a gay time because i tis th e festival celebration. Sometimes I receive a gif t of special food. I t has notbeen offered to the gods but I would prefer not to re ceiv e i t As usual the devilchaser comes offering to chase the devils out of my house. He is surprised that Irefuse. He carries a mask with a cloth attached so that when he puts on the mask thecloth drapes ove r his clothing. A woman who has a small shop said that he came manytimes to her shop (evidently he did not do a good job the f i rst time) because hewanted the coin \Mch she gave.

Mr. Koto, a church deacon, has been in the hospital for two months from the aftereffects of pneumonia. He is able to return home bu t v/e have Just received word thatMr. Haruta, a former deacon, is in th e hospital. He has had lung trouble and has beenoverworking. The dang? climate and lack of good nourishing food causes much T B.

Send us used Christmas cards, at once, as we have none for the hospitals thisyear. e can buy them here but cannot afford such pretty ones. Do not send comiccards nor those without pictures. Do not cut them but paste a seal or a picture overthe wri t ings

An offering from the Hov/ River, Oregon, church wil l be used for giving gif t s -perhaps New Testaments - to the Bible School c hild re n, h er e. The Mabashi Bible Schoolalways takes a Christmas offer ing and sends to the l i t t l e Bible School in themoun ta in s

The Los Gratos California church, which has been sending 50 per month towards myl iving l ink salary for the past nine years, write that they will discontinue t}iatsupport from the f i r s t of January. They plan to double the amount and give i t to another cause. I appreciate their faithful support and the love and interest which theyhave shown by the i r prayers and gif ts on special occasions, I real ize , too, thatthere are many cal l s and people are i nt er es ted i n Liany places where the Lord's workis being done. Hov/ever to have this amount cut off while I m in Japan will causesome difficulty. I t is not possible to live on 50 per month as we did for a few
