“because together we nurture everyone and inspire achievement” Farley Hill School Community

The following principles illustrate our school community’s beliefs, and are reflected in all the work we do:

Happy A stimulating, supportive setting where everyone is valued and welcomed.

Safe A secure and protective environment where we have opportunities to make choices and discover boundaries.

Healthy An understanding that health is an integral part of our wellbeing. We demonstrate this through initiatives such as Healthy Schools and The Food for Life Partnership.

Reflective If it works we do more, if it doesn’t we do something different.

Community We work in partnership to enable everyone to reach their full potential and be caring, responsible citizens.

The School Buildings and Environment

Farley Hill School was first opened in 1925. The original part of the school, with its high windows, can still be seen in the three rooms which form an integral part of the Junior section of the school. The original building has been extended over the years to provide additional accommodation.

The school has seven teaching areas, a main hall and dining hall (Eat Smart Café), two libraries (fiction and non-fiction), staff room, Top of the Pops room and two offices. There are also three playgrounds, a copse, an adventure playground, a summer house, a stage and a playing field.

The School HallOur large hall is the focal point for many of our whole school activities. Music, games, drama, P.E. lessons and assemblies are held in the hall. The Hall is equipped with P.E./Gymnastic apparatus and houses a music area.

Eat Smart Café We are justifiably proud of our “Eat Smart Café”. We are the only primary school in Wokingham to operate its own catering facility. The school employs a highly competent catering manager and a wonderful team of catering staff. Together they work diligently to provide a very high quality nutritious and enjoyable meal for our children. All our school meals are freshly prepared and cooked on the premises in our school kitchen, using local suppliers wherever possible. Meals are generally booked and paid for in advance using the forms provided. Each day about 70% of children eat a meal with us. Our meat is supplied by Roger David of Holdshott Farm, an organic and free-range butcher. Our potatoes and eggs are also locally sourced.

The Eat Smart Café is a vibrant, welcoming and modern place for all children to eat their lunch. We also encourage packed lunch children to eat healthily and to this end sweets, crisps and chocolate coated foods are banned. Chocolate flavoured foods are acceptable. Packed lunch children are provided with water to drink with their meal, or they may bring milk.

Free school meals are available to children of families on low incomes. For more information and an application form please see the school website or the School Business Manager.

The Eat Smart Café also houses the cooking area and art and craft facilities. It is also used during the day when classes need more space. The Café is also the home of the After School Club.

The School GroundsThe school has three playgrounds, one each for Foundation Stage, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 pupils. There is a climbing frame for the Foundation Stage, train for KS1 children and an adventure playground for Key Stage 2 children. There is also a summerhouse, one shed, two covered seats and stage for the use of all children. Areas for playing basketball and football are marked on the playground as are giant grids for playing chess and draughts. The school has a copse which is used to extend classroom work connected with science, geography and the environment.

Page 5: Farley Hill Primary School - the "Life Cloud€¦ · Farley Hill Primary School we care, we learn, we matter “because together we nurture everyone and inspire achievement” Farley

Sports FieldThe Farley Hill King George V playing field is used for all winter and summer sports and is also used by the village out of school hours. The field is owned by Wokingham Borough Council and managed by the school and Swallowfield Parish Council. It is situated approximately 400 metres from the school.

The School GardenThe School has a garden of raised beds, paid for by the School Association. The area was once a piece of derelict ground and has been transformed into a beautiful, tranquil, calm and relaxing but very fruitful growing area. Each class has a raised bed and grows a variety of vegetables in a seasonal rotation. The Gardening Club also has its own beds and experiments with growing a variety of both old and new flowers and vegetables. The garden also has a seating area, a potting shed and an espalier apple, pear and plum tree. A range of potted fruit, vegetables and flowers further enhances this space.

OFSTED

An inspection of Farley Hill School took place in March 2009. The school was inspected by two inspectors led by Mr Graham Stephens and was judged to be good with many outstanding features. The following is the letter the Inspectors sent to children to tell them about their School.

Letter to pupils explaining the fi ndings of the inspection

24 March 2009

Dear Pupils

Inspection of Farley Hill Primary School, Reading, RG7 1UB

On behalf of your inspectors, thank you for being so welcoming, polite and friendly when we came to visit your school recently. We enjoyed meeting and talking with you, and looking at all your work and the exciting things that you do.

You go to a good school. Here is a list of some of the things we liked best.

• Everybody made us feel very welcome and looked after us well.

• You are very polite and caring, and your behaviour is excellent.

• You listen very carefully to all that your teachers and teaching assistants say.

• You work together very well and make good progress in your work.

• Your teachers are excellent at planning very interesting things for you to do.

• All the adults make sure that you are really well looked after, and you are very appreciative of all that they do.

• Your headteacher leads your school really well.

Every school, even one as good as yours, has something that could be improved.

• We have asked both your teachers and teaching assistants to ask you questions that will really make you think hard, and encourage you to produce work of an even higher standard.

• Some of the people that help run your school are fairly new to their roles, and we have asked your headteacher to help them as much as possible so that they can support her even more in ensuring that your school continues to improve.

Yours faithfully

Graham StephensLead Inspector

Procedures at the start of each day

ReceptionWhen children first start school parents should walk with them into the classroom and stay until they are settled on the carpet. At the end of the school day parents should wait for their child at the reception class door.

Years 1 to 6When the bell rings at 8.45 am children line up and go into school in an orderly way, hang up their coats and walk into their own classroom to meet their teacher.

Staff are available to help with clothing.

We do ask you to say goodbye to your child in the playground to prevent congestion and accidents which can happen if there are pushchairs or small toddlers in the entrance lobby. Too many adults in the lobby areas can often be quite frightening for a small child.

The school day ends at 3.10 pm

Children in Years R to 3 are brought to the doorways by their class teacher.

Children in Years 4, 5 and 6 make their own way out of school but do not leave school premises until met by an adult. Parents who wish to meet their children outside the school gates must write to the Headteacher giving consent for their child to be allowed to leave the school premises alone.

Lateness in arrival and collection can be very distressing for children. Teachers have much to do before and after school, therefore we ask you to ensure that your child is at school on time and collected promptly at the end of the day.

Organisation

The school is divided into 7 classes aimed at providing continuing education from4 - 11 years, i.e.:

Foundation Stage Reception Class age 4/5Key Stage 1 Classes 1 and 2 age 5/7Key Stage 2 Classes 3, 4, 5, 6 age 7/11

Each class has a teacher who is responsible primarily for the planning, preparation, teaching, assessment and record keeping of all aspects of the curriculum for each child in the class.

Work in class is organised for whole class, group, or individuals, according to whatever the teacher considers to be appropriate at the time.

Page 10: Farley Hill Primary School - the "Life Cloud€¦ · Farley Hill Primary School we care, we learn, we matter “because together we nurture everyone and inspire achievement” Farley

The SMT consists of Deputy Head Teacher and the School Business Manager (SBM). The Headteacher does not have a class and Deputy Head Teacher is released for one day per week to carry out management work.

All teachers are responsible for an area of the curriculum.

The school also employs:• A Support Teacher for 2.0 days per week who supports able mathematicians in Key

HLTA’s (Higher Level Teaching Assistants), one manages the work of all TA’s whilst the other is responsible for the delivery of all TA special needs work.

• A Parent Support Advisor (PSA) for 10 hours per week.

On occasions classroom assistants are appointed to work with children who have a Statement of Special Educational Need.

The administration of the school is organised by the SBM, Finance Officer and two Admin Assistants.

School lunches are prepared and cooked in our School Kitchen by our Catering Manager and her team. Meal times are supervised by a Meals Supervisor and a team of Lunchtime Controllers.

The cleaning, maintenance and repair of the school building is carried out by a caretaker and her team comprising a cleaner and an odd job man. An IT consultant is also employed to update and maintain the schools’ IT equipment.

The school is able to offer individual instrumental tuition from the Berkshire Maestros. This is a private arrangement between parents and the Trust. In addition piano lessons are offered by a private teacher. Further information from the school office.

Twelve staff are qualified to carry out First Aid.

School Governing Body

The local community is represented on the school governing body by governors nominated by the Parish and Borough Council. There are also representatives from parents, teachers and non-teaching staff. The Governing Body is also able to co-opt members of the local community as appropriate. Two full governors’ meetings are held each term during the school day. Various committee meetings are heldas required.

Parent GovernorsFour parent governors are elected by the parents of all children at the school. ParentGovernors serve for a period of 4 years.

Please refer to the back of the booklet for a full list of Governors.

Parent ForumA parent representative from each class meets half termly with the Headteacher and a governor representative to discuss and resolve issues and share information about the work ofthe school.

Page 12: Farley Hill Primary School - the "Life Cloud€¦ · Farley Hill Primary School we care, we learn, we matter “because together we nurture everyone and inspire achievement” Farley

Attendance and Absence

It is very important that children attend school regularly to achieve continuity in their learning. However, we realise there are occasions when your child may need to be absent. There is a need to keep the school informed about your child’s absence and a decision is made whether the absence is “authorised” or “unauthorised” according to the legislation and guidance set by the Department for Education (DfE) and the local authority.

If the absence remains unexplained then the reason for absence is logged as “unauthorised” in the register. An annual return to the DfE is made regarding authorised and unauthorised absences which becomes part of the national published figures. Unauthorised absences will also be recorded on your child’s annual report.

If your child is absent for any reason, please inform the office by 10.00 am on the first day of illness. When informing the office of absence you should state the reason for absence.

Late ChildrenAll children who arrive late should report to the school office where administrative details such as marking the register and ordering lunches can be carried out. If lateness persists the Educational Welfare Officer may contact parents.

Late ParentsShould unforeseen/exceptional circumstances prevent your child being met on time please try your best to telephone and alert us to the situation. In this situation your child is sent/taken to the office area where she/he will be supervised by a member of school staff.

Family Holidays

We have taken the decision to refuse all requests for holiday absence under normal circumstances.

It is our belief that:• The excellent education offered by the school is too valuable and important to miss.• That taking children out of school during term time is disruptive to the child/children, the rest of the class and the class teacher who is constantly required to replan and reassess the work of the children.• It is administratively burdensome.

Absences related to exams, illness, visits to other schools, medical will not be affected. Should you still decide, despite our request, to take your child out of school you will need to fill in a request for absence as there is a legal obligation on the school to report all absences not notified to the Educational Welfare Officer (EWO) who will then make every effort to contact you.

Page 13: Farley Hill Primary School - the "Life Cloud€¦ · Farley Hill Primary School we care, we learn, we matter “because together we nurture everyone and inspire achievement” Farley

Emergencies and Urgent MessagesIt is essential that we are able to contact you in case of illness or accident so please remember to update information on work addresses and contact telephone numbers. It is very distressing for a child when we are unable to contact parents.

Despite every effort, care and concern, it is possible that your child may either become ill or have an accident whilst at school. Minor accidents and illnesses are dealt with in school, the incident recorded and the child checked by a qualified First Aider.

A note alerting you to a head injury will be handed to the class teacher and then to your child to bring home at the end of the school day. We can only administer water, ice packs or sterile dressings to injuries. For more serious injuries/incidents emergency accident procedures are set into operation.

Communication with Parents Teachers2Parents - the School uses ‘Teachers2Parents’, a text messaging and emailing service which enables the School to contact all parents by text using one click of a computer button.Weekly newsletters are sent to all parents via email. Parents who wish to contact the School for any reason should, in the first instance, telephone or email the School or visit the office between 8.35 and 8.45am and then from 3pm.

Please remember to update the school each time your contact details change.

Medicine The school will only administer medicines prescribed by a doctor. Should your child be required to take medicine whilst in school, please bring it to the office and sign the appropriate permission form.

Whilst taking no responsibility to administer a medicinal dose, we will endeavour to do our best to remember to give it at the appropriate time.

MedicalsThe school nurse visits the school regularly. Our nurse sees all children who enter the school at the earliest opportunity to test hearing and vision. Parents may be invited to meet with the nurse for a fuller medical interview once the initial tests have been completed.

Home School AgreementThe school has a home/school agreement which is given to all new families in the first term of entry. The agreement states the commitment expected of staff, parents and children and emphasises that each child’s education can be best fulfilled through an agreed partnership. The agreement should be read and signed and returned to school.

Page 14: Farley Hill Primary School - the "Life Cloud€¦ · Farley Hill Primary School we care, we learn, we matter “because together we nurture everyone and inspire achievement” Farley

Pastoral CareEach child has a class teacher who is primarily responsible for his/her individual welfare. However, all staff are available to give aid/assistance to any child who may need it. Staff members take an interest in all our children and are responsible collectively for providing a happy, working atmosphere in the school. Should a teacher have concerns about a child or family which they feel unable to support fully, then we encourage the family to approach our PSA in the strictest confidence.

Parent Support AdvisorThe PSA offers friendly, informal confidential support and advice to parents and families. As your Parent Support Advisor she:• Is based in Farley Hill Primary School for 10 hours per week and is flexible with the times she is in school to fit in with when parents and carers need her.• Is available for one to one support sessions.• Provides access to, and information about, parenting workshops and programmes.• Provides information on other services and support in Wokingham.• Offers regular drop-in sessions and coffee mornings.

Fire DrillsThese are carried out on a regular basis in order that all children and adults using the school site are familiar with emergency procedures.

Broadmoor WarningOur school is within a 5-mile radius of Broadmoor Hospital and we follow the recommended procedure when there is an alert. A copy of this procedure is on the green personal details form you will be asked to complete when your child starts school.

DisciplineSchool should be an orderly place where the process of learning can be encouraged within an attractive and stimulating environment. The rules of the school are shared with the children. There are rewards for good behaviour and effort and sanctions are applied when rules are broken or behaviour deemed unacceptable. We hope to encourage the children to accept individual responsibility to behave with consideration at all times. We do not anticipate that any punishments more severe than a temporary withdrawal of privileges should be needed. Parents are informed by the Headteacher, or a member of staff, should unacceptable behaviour occur on a regular basis. We value early consultations between parents and teaching staff in solving any problems that may arise.

We have three “Golden Rules”, they are:• We value everyone and everything• We co-operate with others• We take responsibility for our learning and behaviour.

The School has an anti-bullying policy and does not tolerate bullying. A range of strategies are used to eliminate bullying and the School always takes part in the national ‘Anti-Bullying Week’. A copy of our Anti-Bullying Policy can be found on our website.

Page 15: Farley Hill Primary School - the "Life Cloud€¦ · Farley Hill Primary School we care, we learn, we matter “because together we nurture everyone and inspire achievement” Farley

Red Letter DayOn pre-determined days throughout the school year children from each class are selected to receive a “Red Letter”.

The Red Letter tells parents why their child has been selected for an award. The children receive a certificate. The criteria for receiving a “Red Letter” are, showing good behaviour, responsibility, kindness, politeness, helpfulness, achievement in any subject area and enthusiasm towards school and its activities.

Travel to SchoolOur School, because of its rural nature, and lack of pavements is not easily accessible on foot - most children travel by car. The road outside the School is very narrow, therefore there is often congestion. All parents are actively encouraged to be careful, kind and considerate road users. To aid arrival at School the School has two drop-off zones. Details of where the zones are and how to use them are contained in your welcome pack.

Mid-Morning SnacksThe school provides fresh fruit and vegetables to all infant children. Junior children may bring a piece of fruit/vegetable to eat for a mid-morning snack. We encourage children to develop a positive attitude towards healthy eating. Mid-morning snacks are stored in a basket in the classroom.

MilkChildren receive free school milk until the day they are 5. Should you wish your child to drink milk after he/she is 5 please complete the Cool Milk application form which can be found in the wallet outside the main office and post directly to the freepost address.

WaterWe encourage all children to bring a bottle (see-through with a sports cap) of fresh water to school every day. It is our belief that regular access to drinking water helps children’s concentration and attention span. We also believe drinking water helps your child towards enjoying a healthy life-style. Bottles should be washed out and refilled at home each day.

School CouncilThe School Council is an elected group of 14 children. Each class elects 2 children to represent it for a period of 6 months. The Council meet every third week to consider issues raised by the children. Issues recently discussed are – the use of the shed and covered seats, the names of these items and how to improve the playground environment.

Page 16: Farley Hill Primary School - the "Life Cloud€¦ · Farley Hill Primary School we care, we learn, we matter “because together we nurture everyone and inspire achievement” Farley

Uniform

Parents are requested to ensure that their child wears the correct school uniform at all times and that it is clearly named.

Girls Winter Grey pinafore dress, skirt or trousers White Blouse Blue ‘V’ necked pullover/cardigan Red tie Grey or white socks or tights Summer Red and white gingham checked dress (The style is left to individual choice)

Boys All year Grey trousers/shorts White shirt Blue ‘V’ necked pullover/cardigan Red tie Grey socks

Children should be encouraged to wear sensible footwear throughout the year. Trainers are not permitted.

All Children P.E. kit Red shorts School tee-shirt Trainers

Children do PE in the hall in bare feet. Your child needs trainers for outdoor PE sessions. Children may wear tracksuits for outdoor Games sessions during the winter.

We recommend that all children bring a sun hat to school during the summer and early autumn term as we have very little shade in our play areas. When the weather is very warm children do not need to wear a tie. The decision to allow children not to wear a tie is taken by the Head Teacher. Should children arrive at School wearing a tie in hot weather they may not remove it, but loosen it. All children need an art/craft overall. An old shirt sewn up the front is adequate.

Uniform SalesSchool uniform may be purchased from our supplier – K T Textiles, 9 Harpton Parade, Village Way, Yateley, Hants GU46 7SB. Telephone 01252 877905. Email [email protected] Please collect an order form from the pockets outside the offi ce. The form details items available, cost and payment details. Orders can be delivered to school if you wish.

Page 17: Farley Hill Primary School - the "Life Cloud€¦ · Farley Hill Primary School we care, we learn, we matter “because together we nurture everyone and inspire achievement” Farley

Property and EquipmentAll children should bring a named drawstring bag to school on Monday mornings. This should contain:• P.E. kit• Trainers• An art/craft shirtThis should be taken home each Friday for washing.

School Bags - We have very limited cloakroom space. Small bags only should be brought to school.

The school cannot accept responsibility for children’s belongings. Efforts are always made to recover lost property, but children must accept responsibility for the things they bring into school. This includes musical instruments which are not covered by any school insurance. We would advise you to insure your child’s instrument whilst in school.

“Swapping” of belongings is not allowed. Money should only be brought to school when requested. Children are not permitted to bring valuable items, or mobile telephones to school.

Jewellery should not be worn to school. All clothing, PE equipment, watches and personal belongings should be named. Earrings must be removed for PE lessons. Watches and earrings are stored in a class “valuables” box during PE lessons. The teacher is responsible for the safety of this box.

Lost Property - Items of lost property are stored in a box outside Year 3.

Educational VisitsThese are looked upon as an important and regular feature of our curriculum, reinforcing much of the work done in the classroom.

Day visits may be planned to enrich particular curriculum work being undertaken in school.

Year 6 children make an annual, one week, residential visit. Apart from being designed as part of a term’s project work with a sound educational basis, this visit makes a valuable contribution to a child’s emotional, social, physical and academic development.

Year 4 children make an annual, two day, residential visit to Ufton Court near Aldermaston. The visit makes a valuable contribution to your child’s understanding of The Tudor period and also gives children experience of staying away from home. In addition this visit contributes to a child’s emotional, social, physical and academic development.

Page 18: Farley Hill Primary School - the "Life Cloud€¦ · Farley Hill Primary School we care, we learn, we matter “because together we nurture everyone and inspire achievement” Farley

Charging for School Activities “A Smarter Way to Pay”

We operate a very popular, unique and clever system for requesting parental voluntary contributions to support “extra” activities within the curriculum. At the start of each school year parents are invited to make a single voluntary contribution towards all school activities during the year.

This scheme has enabled the school to offer all the children in the school a wide and varied range of opportunities both in the school and externally to support their learning and development. The scheme has proved extremely successful over the years and has allowed the school to plan trips and activities at the beginning of the year, and thus secure better pricing; additionally the administration required, both by parents and the school, to deal with weekly payments by individual children has completely disappeared.

It is hoped that all parents will continue to support the scheme in order that the school can continue to provide the opportunities to enhance the learning and development of all the children.

A letter explaining the scheme and how to pay will be sent to you at the start of the year.

Extra-Curriculum ActivitiesA variety of clubs usually take place during lunch times or after school. These are generally offered to all children.

Clubs may vary from term to term depending on staff availability and/or the changing seasons.

This year we have offered judo, football, zumba, dance, bikeability, multi-sports, hockey, gardening, cheerleading and drama.Clubs usually run for 8 to 10 sessions per term.

Helping in SchoolWe are grateful for parent and, indeed any, volunteers who are willing to help regularly in school with such activities as reading, library, cooking, craft and school outings. Please do let your child’s teacher know if you would be willing to work in school. Such help encourages a strong relationship between home and school.

InsuranceInsurance is taken out on behalf of parents covering accidents, cancellation, loss of equipment, etc., for all children leaving the school premises for any outings or trips.

Farley Hill After-School Wild ClubFarley Hill After-School Wild Club provides a secure, enjoyable and caring environment for all primary school children from the end of every school day until 6:00 pm and follow Playwork Principles. The Club offers a range of interesting and fun activities in safe and controlled surroundings. The Club is open to all pupils in full-time education at Farley Hill School.

The style of the Club is co-operative and informal whilst encouraging consideration for the preferences of others. Activities are, to a large extent, chosen or suggested by the children themselves. Club members may: • join in themed activities to do with topics of the day• explore different art media and craft techniques• participate in group activities and projects • join in indoor games• take part in outdoor games and activities in good weather• study or read in a quiet corner.

The Club operates on school premises and is run by a professional supervisor, supported by play workers. The Club is responsible to the Farley Hill After-School Club committee, composed of a group of parents with children at the school, plus Mrs. Marshall, who sits on the committee as a non-executive member.

Farley Hill After-School Wild Club is supported by the Children’s Information Centre in Wokingham and is part of WOOSH (Wokingham Out of School Hours Network). The Club is registered with OFSTED and is regularly inspected.

Copies of the Farley Hill After-School Club Prospectus, Registration Forms, Booking Forms and Policies & Procedures document are available from the Club, or by telephoning Caron Quinn, Supervisor, Farley Hill After-School Wild Club, on 07768 179490 during Club hours.

School Association

The role of the School Association (SA) is to help advance the education, resources and opportunities of the pupils in the school by raising funds for items not covered ordinarily under usual School budgets. The SA, which is a registered charity, organises fundraising events and initiatives that school families and the local community can attend and enjoy.

As a parent of a child at Farley Hill School you are automatically a member of the School Association, and as such we encourage you to become involved with, and support its activities. We welcome members to our active committee at any time during the school year, with officers being appointed at the Annual General Meeting each October.

Every year we hold three main fundraising events: - ‘Sparks in the Park!’ - a community fireworks event held in the grounds of Swallowfield Park each November, ‘Winter Wonderland’ - an evening Christmas bazaar for school families which is held within the school, and our ‘Summer Fete and sports Day’ which takes place at St George V playing fields in Farley Hill.

We additionally run a number of fundraising initiatives throughout the year including fabric recycling schemes, plant and hanging basket sales, football and rugby ticket schemes, pantomime tickets at subsidised rates, children’s Christmas card project, family photo sessions and catalogue schemes.

Our events and initiatives are well supported by the families at school and the local community, helping us to raise, on average, around £15,000 each year.

School Association (continued)

The monies raised are used to fund projects identified by the School; projects which would not otherwise be possible. These have included the setting up of the Eat Smart Café, installation of a garden of raised beds for each class, a new library system and books, food technology equipment, computers, cameras and video cameras for each class, classroom refurbishments and a new adventure playground.

You can become an active member of the SA in a number of different ways, for example by joining the committee, helping to plan events, offering ideas, spearheading an initiative, volunteering to help at events, donating items for raffles and stalls, and of course by supporting or attending each event. Dads can also become members of our logistics team ‘Dad Power’. This team co-ordinates logistical operations at all our major events; duties include marquee installation, electrics, equipment transportation, safety and security.

We hope being part of the School Association will help you and your child have a happy and successful time at Farley Hill School

Educating our Children - Every Child Matters

In our school we teach English, Maths, Science, Information and Communication Technology, Design Technology, History, Geography, French, Art, Music, PE, Multi-Cultural, Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) and Citizenship. Collectively these subjects are known as “The National Curriculum”. We also teach Religious Education (RE) which is not a national curriculum subject but is a statutory requirement for all schools.

Over the years the School has worked hard to encompass the outcomes of the Every Child Matters agenda in the belief that such provision ensures an excellent education for every child. They are:

• Be healthy This encompasses physical, mental, emotional and sexual health as well as helping children to pursue healthy lifestyles and to reject any temptation to experiment with illegal substances.• Stay safe This covers protection from mistreatment, neglect, violence and sexual exploitation as well as accidental injury, bullying, discrimination, crime and anti-social behaviour. It also extends to the right to well-being. It includes being mindful of the safety of young people in and beyond the school community.• Enjoy and achieve This highlights attending and enjoying school and recreation, achieving national education standards, as well as the right to personal and social development.• Make a positive contribution This relates to participation in decision-making, volunteering and supporting the community and environment, abiding by the law and school rules, developing positive relationships, dealing with major life changes and building confidence.• Achieve economic well-being This includes the right to education and training beyond school, authentic preparation for employment and a fulfilling life, decent homes and sustainable communities, access to transport and material goods.

Early Years Foundation Stage

In Reception we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage framework. Our curriculum is based around six areas of learning and development:

• Personal, Social and Emotional Development• Communication, Language and Literacy• Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy, • Knowledge and Understanding of the World• Physical Development• Creative Development

We provide a balance of activities led by adults alongside those initiated by the children. These may be based around topics or are developed from the children’s own needs or interests. There is extensive use of the outdoor area and an emphasis is placed on learning through investigating, problem solving, asking questions and fi rst hand experiences.

KS1 and KS2

The school operates an integrated curriculum where all subjects are taught through a themed approach. Some lessons such as maths French, PE and recorder tuition are taught as separate lessons.

The aim of our themed teaching is to foster in all children independence, responsibility, creativity and high motivation. All children have a “planner” detailing the work they must complete. The “planner” is a fl exible aid as children are able to choose when and how to do tasks on the understanding that all tasks will be completed by the end of the “planner” period. For KS1 children planners are often daily, whilst for those in KS2 planners often span one or two weeks.

We are happy to expand on and talk in more detail about our teaching philosophy on a 1 to 1 basis. Please ask.

Parent ConsultationsParents’ evenings are arranged in the Autumn and Spring terms when you are invited to meet the class teacher and discuss your child’s work and general progress in school. However, all our teachers will be happy to see you informally at other times. You are strongly encouraged to make an appointment with your child’s teacher.

Curriculum NewsEach class teacher issues a “Curriculum News” leaflet termly. This document informs you about what will be taught in each class during the term. Specific information relating to that class and more general information about the school is also contained in the leaflet. The aim of the leaflet is to enable you to support your child’s learning at home.

AssessmentAll children are assessed at the end of the Reception Class using the Foundation Stage Profile.

Standard Assessment Tests (SATs) are for all children at the ages of 7 and 11. Information about these assessments will be given to you in the year your child is due to be assessed. You will receive the results of these assessments for your child in printed format. Results of National Curriculum Tests for 11 year olds are included in the Appendix.

Teachers assess the learning of all children on a daily basis in order to set learning goals and targets for each child and to decide on the next teaching step. These assessments are formally entered into a database at the end of each term so that progress can be tracked and monitored and support provided where necessary.

All children have learning goals which are displayed in the classroom, known by the children and shared with parents. Learning goals are changed when the child and teacher together agree they have been achieved.

Special NeedsMany children need specific support at some point in their time in school. Support may be needed for many reasons e.g.• Through particular learning difficulties in a subject area.• Difficulties that are of a physical, emotional, social or behavioural nature.• Showing evidence of high ability in a subject area (Gifted and Talented).

Our aim is to work together with parents and outside agencies (when necessary) to support all children by providing for their particular needs, in order that they achieve their full potential.

We endeavour to identify a child’s particular needs as early as possible. Individual help is given by the class teacher, the support teacher and classroom assistant. Our Inclusion Manager works alongside class teachers and parents to plan support and help for each child. Should it be deemed necessary, further advice and support will be sought from outside agencies such as specialist staff in the Integrated Pupil Support Services, the Educational Psychologist, School Doctor and Nurse or Child Guidance/Social Psychiatric officers.

It is our policy to ensure that parents are consulted regularly at every stage.

Accessibility PlanThe school admissions policy does not discriminate against physically handicapped pupils and all pupils are treated equally as described in our Equal Opportunities Policy. The school has an accessibility plan and has a disabled toilet, wheelchair access and a hearing loop. We regularly consider the facilities needed to meet the future needs of physically disabled children in the school. Where building changes are required, these are incorporated in major capital projects.

Collective WorshipAll children participate in an act of collective worship each day. Assemblies reflect the rich and varied heritage of other cultures as well as the Christian heritage. Examples from the lives and literature of many cultures and faiths provide inspiration and role models.

The presentation of celebrations and seasonal festivals increases knowledge and understanding.

Each class prepares its own assembly twice per year, when children share some of the aspects of their learning with the rest of the school. You will be invited to share these events with your child.

A member of the Loddon Reach Church Community visits the school regularly to take assemblies.

Homework Policy

Homework is given to all children and increases as children move through the school. Details of the specific homework for each class can be found in the Curriculum News issued termly and on the learning platform. Specific homework guidance is issued annually to all parents.Occasionally work not completed in school is given as homework. All children have “reading” homework daily.

Homework is given in order to develop:• independence and self-discipline;• self-reliance and self-organisation;• the ability to take responsibility for personal learning;• a positive attitude toward home study - including making a commitment to the completion of a given task.

Parents can support their child by:a) providing a suitable quiet place to work;b) listening to any difficulties and helping your child to find the answers without actually doing the work for him/her;c) assisting him/her in learning specific spellings/tables, etc;d) letting a teacher know if your child has particular difficulty at any given time.e) ensuring work is returned to school on time.

Complaints Procedure

We have good amicable relationships with our parents and if something untoward happens we hope that we can put it right. Parents who feel they have cause for complaint about any matter relating to the school should in the first instance try to resolve their concern with the Headteacher. If the complaint remains unresolved the next step is to put the matter in writing to the Chair of Governors who will advise on the next step to be taken.

National Curriculum Assessments of 11 Year OldsStandard Assessment Tests (SATS) 2011/2012The number of eligible pupils in the final year of Key Stage 2 was 31. It is expected that the average eleven year old child will have attained Level 4 in each subject area tested. Percentage of children at each level is below. Note that the figure for any one task may not total 100% because the task or test does not apply at every level or because of rounding.
