FWLab UAlberta overview April 2016

The University of Alberta’s first Lab was attended by over 250 people and attracted good media coverage. Our top 3 winners competed in Berlin—one, PhD student Nermeen Youssef, won 2nd in Berlin. In 2015, UAlberta sent another 3 to Berlin. Again one of them, post-doctoral fellow Lian Willetts, won 2nd, while our other contestants placed 5 and 8 .

Because of the University’s success and strong record in Berlin, we were invited to expand and host a qualifying Falling Walls Venture as well as a Lab in 2016.

We are looking for up to 15 outstanding graduate students, post docs, researchers, academics, innovators or entrepreneurs under 35 in all disciplines with ideas/research initiatives that can breakdown walls and improve society to compete at the 2016 Falling Walls Lab UAlberta. Our top three winners will represent UAlberta, Edmonton, Alberta and Canada at the Berlin finale on November 8, 2016.

Deadline, application and selection process There is a two part application process— a short online application and a 2 minute video. Twenty-five semi-finalists will be invited to a special bootcamp to hone their presentation skills through group training and practice. The bootcamp will conclude with semi-finalists presenting to a selection panel. The panel will select up to 15 finalists to compete at Falling Walls Lab UAlberta on September 29, 2016.

Screening and judging criteria (equally weighted)

• Breakthrough factor—how new and outstanding is the idea• Relevance and impact—how relevant for the specific discipline and the degree of impact it will have• Structure and performance—clarity and how convincing is the presenter/presentation

At least three Edmonton science-based start-ups will present their business concept in less than 10 minutes. A jury will select the most convincing concept; that team will then compete against 19 other international science-based start-ups at Falling Walls Venture Berlin on November 8, 2016. The winner in Berlin will be named Falling Walls Science Start-Up of the Year (2016) and present again at the Falling Walls Conference on November 9, to an audience of over 700 including European government and media representatives.

Falling Walls Lab UAlberta is led by UAlberta’s Office of Vice-President (Research) and supported by the Helmholtz-Alberta Initiative. Please direct questions to [email protected]. The examples and resources below will help you familiarize yourself with the Lab and Venture format:
