Metaphysics developed the idea of thingness, that Everything includes every thing, and the self as a thinking thing seeking objective knowledge. Besides thingness, Eastern thought, includes of nothingness. In this class, we will read the founding texts for Daoism, Confucianism, Hinduism, Buddhism and Zen (in that order) to dwell on nothing, no-thing, and no-thingness; talk non- sense; think about emptiness, death and explore how reincarnation might work. In short, we will examine the philosophical grounds for Being and Nothingness. Books: The Sourcebook for Indian Philosophy by Radhakrishan & Moore ($57).
