ExtremeWare 7.4 Command Reference Guide

Preface

This preface provides an overview of this guide, describes guide conventions, and lists other publications that may be useful.

IntroductionThis guide provides the complete syntax for all the commands available in the currently-supported versions of the ExtremeWare software running on either modular or stand-alone switches from Extreme Networks. This also includes commands that support specific modules such as the ARM, MPLS or PoS modules. This guide is intended for use as a reference by network administrators who are responsible for installing and setting up network equipment. It assumes knowledge of Extreme Networks switch configuration. For conceptual information and guidance on configuring Extreme Networks switches, see the ExtremeWare Software User Guide for your version of the ExtremeWare software.

TerminologyWhen features, functionality, or operation is specific to a modular or stand-alone switch family, the family name is used. Explanations about features and operations that are the same across all product families simply refer to the product as the switch.

Conventionsand list conventions that are used throughout this guide.

Table 2: Text ConventionsConvention Screen displays The words enter and type [Key] names Description This typeface indicates command syntax, or represents information as it appears on the screen. When you see the word enter in this guide, you must type something, and then press the Return or Enter key. Do not press the Return or Enter key when an instruction simply says type. Key names are written with brackets, such as [Return] or [Esc]. If you must press two or more keys simultaneously, the key names are linked with a plus sign (+). Example: Press [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[Del]. Words in italicized type Italics emphasize a point or denote new terms at the place where they are defined in the text.

Command TitlesFor clarity and brevity, the command titles omit variables, values, and optional arguments. The complete command syntax is displayed directly below the command titles.

NOTE If you are using Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat Version 6.0 or later to view PDF files, see Using Adobe Reader Version 6.0 in this section for important information on making a configuration adjustment to ensure proper viewing and linking of PDF files. The following two ExtremeWare publications are available as PDF files that are designed to be used online together: ExtremeWare 7.4 User Guide ExtremeWare 7.4 Command Reference Guide The user guide PDF file provides links that connect you directly to relevant command information in the command reference guide PDF file. This quick-referencing capability enables you to easily find detailed information in the command reference guide for any command mentioned in the user guide. To ensure that the quick-referencing feature functions properly, follow these steps: 1 Download both the user guide PDF file and the command reference guide PDF file to the same destination directory on your computer. 2 You may open one or both PDF files to enable cross-referenced linking between the user guide and command reference guide; however, it is recommended that for ease of use, you keep both files open concurrently on your computer desktop. To keep both PDF files open when you activate a cross-reference link, open both PDF files before using the link.

Handling PDF Display ProblemsTo avoid PDF display problems that can complicate effective cross-referenced linking between the ExtremeWare Software User Guide and the ExtremeWare Software Command Reference Guide, follow the PDF guidelines in this section. Opening Both PDF Files Before Using the Links. If you activate a cross-referencing link from the ExtremeWare Software User Guide PDF file to the ExtremeWare Software Command Reference PDF file when the command reference PDF file is closed (that is, not currently open on your computer desktop), the system will first close the user guide PDF file and then open the command reference PDF file. To keep both PDF files open when you activate a cross-reference link, open both PDF files before using the link. Using Adobe Reader Version 6.0. If you are using Adobe Reader version 6.0 or later, or if you are using Reader embedded in Adobe Acrobat version 6.0 or later, follow these steps to ensure proper concurrent viewing and linking of both the user guide and command reference guide PDF files: 1 Double-click a PDF icon to open the Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat window. You can also open the Adobe Reader or Acrobat window by double-clicking the Reader or Acrobat icon on your desktop or by using the Windows Start menu and navigating to the appropriate Adobe program. 2 In the Edit pull-down menu, select Preferences. The Preferences window will be displayed. 3 In the Preferences window, select the General option displayed in the left-hand column in the list of preference options. The General options will be displayed in the Preferences window. 4 In the Miscellaneous area of the Preferences window (shown in the lower section of the Preferences window), deselect the following option:

Command Reference Overview

IntroductionThis guide provides details of the command syntax for all ExtremeWare commands as of ExtremeWare version 7.4.0. NOTE ExtremeWare 7.4.0 supports the i series platforms, including the BlackDiamond, Alpine, and Summit i series switches. In addition, ExtremeWare supports the e series platforms, including the Summit 200, Summit 300, and Summit 400 series switches. Certain commands are available only on selected platforms; these restrictions are noted in the command description. This guide does not provide feature descriptions, explanations of the technologies, or configuration examples. For information about the various features and technologies supported by Extreme Networks switches, see the installation and user guides for your product. This guide does not replace the installation and user guides; this guide supplements the installation and user guides.

AudienceThis guide is intended for use by network administrators who are responsible for installing and setting up network equipment. It assumes a basic working knowledge of the following: Local area networks (LANs) Ethernet concepts Ethernet switching and bridging concepts Routing concepts Internet Protocol (IP) concepts Routing Information Protocol (RIP) and Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) concepts Border Gateway Protocol (BGP-4) concepts (BGP is supported only on the i series platforms.) IP Multicast concepts Distance Vector Multicast Routing Protocol (DVMRP) concepts

63

Command Reference Overview

Protocol Independent Multicast (PIM) concepts (PIM dense mode commands are supported only on the i series platforms.) Internet Packet Exchange (IPX) concepts (IPX-related commands are supported only on the i series platforms.) Server Load Balancing (SLB) concepts (SLB-related commands are supported only on the i series platforms.) Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) This guide also assumes that you have read the Installation and User Guide for your product.

Structure of this GuideThis guide documents each ExtremeWare command. Related commands are grouped together and organized into chapters based on their most common usage. The chapters reflect the organization of the ExtremeWare Software User Guide. If a specific command is relevant to a wide variety of functions and could be included in a number of different chapters, we have attempted to place the command in the most logical chapter. Within each chapter, commands appear in alphabetical order. You can use the Index of Commands to locate specific commands if they do not appear where you expect to find them. NOTE The ExtremeWare command line interface (CLI) supports only the US character set. For each command, the following information is provided: Command SyntaxThe actual syntax of the command. The syntax conventions (the use of braces or curly brackets, for example) are defined in the section Understanding the Command Syntax on page 65. DescriptionA brief (one sentence) summary of what the command does. Syntax DescriptionThe definition of any keywords and options used in the command. DefaultThe defaults, if any, for this command. The default can be the default action of the command if optional arguments are not provided, or it can be the default state of the switch (such as for an enable/disable command). Usage GuidelinesInformation to help you use the command. This may include prerequisites, prohibitions, and related commands, as well as other information. ExampleExamples of the command usage, including output, if relevant. HistoryThe version of ExtremeWare in which the command was introduced, and version(s) where it was modified, if appropriate. Platform AvailabilityThe platforms on which the command is supported. NOTE Commands designated as available on all platforms are supported on Summit chipset-based, i series, e series, and 3 series platforms.

Understanding the Command Syntax

Understanding the Command SyntaxWhen entering a command at the prompt, be sure that you have the appropriate privilege level. Most configuration commands require you to have the administrator privilege level. A variety of symbols are shown in this guide as part of the command syntax. These symbols explain how to enter the command, and you do not type them as part of the command itself. Table 3 summarizes command syntax symbols.

Table 3: Command Syntax SymbolsSymbol angle brackets < > Description Enclose a variable or value. You must specify the variable or value. For example, in the syntax configure vlan ipaddress you must supply a VLAN name for and an address for when entering the command. Do not type the angle brackets. square brackets [ ] Enclose a required value or list of required arguments. One or more values or arguments can be specified. For example, in the syntax use image [primary | secondary] you must specify either the primary or secondary image when entering the command. Do not type the square brackets. vertical bar | Separates mutually exclusive items in a list, one of which must be entered. For example, in the syntax configure snmp community [read-only | read-write] you must specify either the read or read-write community string in the command. Do not type the vertical bar. braces { } Enclose an optional value or a list of optional arguments. One or more values or arguments can be specified. For example, in the syntax reboot { | cancel} you can specify either a particular date and time combination, or the keyword cancel to cancel a previously scheduled reboot. If you do not specify an argument, the command will prompt asking if you want to reboot the switch now. Do not type the braces.

Command Completion with Syntax HelperThe CLI has a built-in syntax helper. If you are unsure of the complete syntax for a particular command, enter as much of the command as possible and press [Tab]. The syntax helper provides a list of options for the remainder of the command, and places the cursor at the end of the command you have entered so far, ready for the next option. If the command is one where the next option is a named component, such as a VLAN, access profile, or route map, the syntax helper will also list any currently configured names that might be used as the next option. In situations where this list might be very long, the syntax helper will list only one line of names, followed by an ellipses to indicate that there are more names than can be displayed. The syntax helper also provides assistance if you have entered an incorrect command.

ExtremeWare 7.4 Command Reference Guide

65

Command Reference Overview

Abbreviated SyntaxAbbreviated syntax is the shortest unambiguous allowable abbreviation of a command or parameter. Typically, this is the first three letters of the command. If you do not enter enough letters to allow the switch to determine which command you mean, the syntax helper will provide a list of the options based on the portion of the command you have entered.

NOTE When using abbreviated syntax, you must enter enough characters to make the command unambiguous and distinguishable to the switch.

NamesAll named components of the switch configuration must have a unique name. Names must begin with an alphabetical character and are delimited by whitespace, unless enclosed in quotation marks.

Command ShortcutsAll named components of the switch configuration must have a unique name. Components are named using the create command. When you enter a command to configure a named component, you do not need to use the keyword of the component. For example, to create a VLAN, you must enter a unique VLAN name:create vlan engineering

After you have created the VLAN with a unique name, you can eliminate the keyword vlan from all subsequent commands that require the name to be entered. For example, instead of entering the modular switch commandconfigure vlan engineering delete port 1:3,4:6

you could enter the following shortcut:configure engineering delete port 1:3,4:6

Similarly, on a stand-alone switch, instead of entering the commandconfigure vlan engineering delete port 1-3,6

you could enter the following shortcut:configure engineering delete port 1-3,6

Modular Switch Numerical RangesCommands that require you to enter one or more port numbers on a modular switch use the parameter in the syntax. A can be one port on a particular slot. For example, port 3:1

A can be a range of numbers. For example, port 3:1-3:3

You can add additional slot and port numbers to the list, separated by a comma:port 3:1,4:8,6:10

indicates all ports on slot 3. You can specify a range of slots and ports. For example, port 2:3-4:5

indicates slot 2, port 3 through slot 4, port 5.

Stand-alone Switch Numerical RangesCommands that require you to enter one or more port numbers on a stand-alone switch use the parameter in the syntax. A portlist can be a range of numbers, for example:port 1-3

You can add additional port numbers to the list, separated by a comma:port 1-3,6,8

Commands for Accessing the Switch

This chapter describes: Commands used for accessing and configuring the switch including how to set up user accounts, passwords, date and time settings, and software licenses Commands used for configuring the Domain Name Service (DNS) client Commands used for checking basic switch connectivity ExtremeWare supports the following two levels of management: User Administrator A user-level account has viewing access to all manageable parameters, with the exception of: User account database SNMP community strings A user-level account can use the ping command to test device reachability and change the password assigned to the account name. An administrator-level account can view and change all switch parameters. It can also add and delete users and change the password associated with any account name. The administrator can disconnect a management session that has been established by way of a Telnet connection. If this happens, the user logged on by way of the Telnet connection is notified that the session has been terminated. The DNS client in ExtremeWare augments certain ExtremeWare commands to accept either IP addresses or host names. For example, DNS can be used during a Telnet session when you are accessing a device or when using the ping command to check the connectivity of a device. The switch offers the following commands for checking basic connectivity: ping traceroute

The ping command enables you to send Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) echo messages to a remote IP device. The traceroute command enables you to trace the routed path between the switch and a destination endstation.
