EDITOR’S NOTE

What a start to the year! First the flooding, then those unbelievable commuter stories in re-cording-breaking traffic jams… But no matter how long you have been living here, how many

times you have already seen it, or how much hassle it may cause you, you do have to admit that Paris looks particu-larly beautiful decked out in white! Somehow seeing famil-iar surroundings under snow instills them with a magical quality, and when those surroundings are as spectacular as the sites of Paris, the result is really impressive. Even just watching silent snowfall in such a busy city is relaxing, though admittedly the ensuing chaos it creates here is quite the opposite!

We have really enjoyed seeing all your snow pictures and reading your snow stories on Facebook and many thanks to those of you who shared their photos on Instagram. It has inspired us to plan a relaunch of our cover photo compe-tition - stay tuned to our online pages, we will be posting more details there shortly.

It has been very encouraging to see how well our online community is growing and I would like to thank you all for your continued support. We are now also looking to expand distribution of our magazine to other areas in the Paris suburbs and I would welcome your help with this. If your employer would like to make this publication available in your establishment send me an email on [email protected]

For those of you who are finding this experience of winter in France a bit too much, there is an old French saying, which goes ‘Des neiges et un bon hiver, mettent bien du bien à couvert’, meaning that snow and a good cold winter are just covering up good things to come. So ‘tenez bon’ - hang on in there!

TOWER TO TOWER BIKE RIDEThe University of London Institute in Paris (ULIP) students are organising the Tower to Tower Bike Ride. A team of ULIP stu-dents will be cycling from the Eiffel Tower to Blackpool Tower in June 2018 to raise funds for the mental health charity Mind. The journey consists of a 600-mile bike ride between Paris and Blackpool, over the course of nine days. Third-year student Sophie Boyle, this year’s Bike Ride Committee Chair, says: “As students, Mind and the work they do for dealing with student mental health issues are very important to us. We’re all ner-vous about the ride, which we know is going to be physically and mentally draining, so please help us, and Mind, by dona-ting generously”.

One in four people will experience a mental health problem in any given year, but it is estimated only 25% of people with mental health problems receive support. The ULIP students aim to raise both money and awareness, so please do help the Tower to Tower bike ride team and Mind by spreading the word and donating at the following link: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ULIPTowerToTower

8 COMMUNITY NEWS EXPATRIATES MAGAZINE PARISVOLUNTEERING IS A

LIFESTYLEBy Pierre Luckner

Since living here, I have gained more volunteer experience than work experience, which may be an unusual ratio, but it is one I feel is per-sonally beneficial. I first volunteered for the French Salvation Army for one year in 2013. Then, in March 2014, I became a key volunteer in the ‘Friday Mission Lunch,’ an English-spea-king soup kitchen at the American Cathedral in the heart of Paris, where I have since met many people from a variety of countries and from very different walks of life.

The ‘Friday Mission Lunch’ began in the ear-ly 90’s with 3 volunteers serving hot cooked lunches to about 20 needy. Since then it has grown to serve around 60 guests every Friday from 10am to 2pm.

Although English is the common language in this soup kitchen, we also get to practice ba-sic French in social interactions with the fran-cophones. I have found that the volunteers’ teamwork builds mutually enriching friendships through a shared commitment to humanity, which I value immensely. If you would be inte-rested in volunteering to help us please send an email to: [email protected]

Hard Parisian Water A lasting solution for your hair

Free hair treatment to Expatriates Magazine readers

By Dean & Gigi

One of the biggest issues living in Paris is the hard water and pollution. It can really upset the condition of your hair. Coupled with overuse of heat (blow

dryers and hair straighteners), and too many chemical services, we often encounter clients desperate for a longer lasting solution.

Oliver Brown Hair has introduced Olaplex - the latest patented hair treatment that actually seeks out and helps to repair bonds in your hair.

The beauty of Olaplex is that it is not a condi-tioner. Conditioners are cosmetic and temporary, whereas this works internally in the hair bonds. Olaplex restores strength, elasticity and integrity to each hair. It is a perfect pick-me-up to restore and revitalise damaged hair.

Olaplex has really helped us transform clients’ hair which would otherwise have been too da-maged to work on. Clients who have already tried it now ask for this treatment every visit, be-cause it works so well. How does it work? First-ly, we conduct a hair analysis. Then the correct amount of treatment is added to the colour/ke-ratin. Olaplex should only be used by professio-nally trained stylists such as Oliver Brown.

Oliver Brown Hair are o ering you a free Olaplex treatment worth 25€ on every co-lour and keratin service in December and January. Just mention Expatriates Magazine when booking. Call 06.74.91.50.91

I want to step through the door full of curiosity, wondering: what is it going to be like, that cottage of darkness? —Mary Oliver

Understandably, most people don’t like thinking about death until someone close to them dies or a disease

intrudes and threatens their life. We try to keep death at bay, as if it were the “enemy”. Our culture doesn’t have much place for death, though so much of life revolves around it.

In the past year, several people close to me have died. It has me thinking again about death. What is death? Only the breakdown and disappea-rance of the body? The complete ab-sence of awareness of being? Awar-eness of the possibility of our own absence may help in understanding death. The primary awareness of our existence is fundamental to being conscious and alive. This recognition appears independent of body. What happens to that feeling of “I exist” wi-thout a body? Does it persist? While philosophers and religious thinkers have spent ages talking about mor-tality, humans generally spend a lot of time and money avoiding it!

In childhood, I had a recurring dream: I had the sensation of a trapdoor opening beneath me, and I was being sucked downward fast, like the wind pulled out of a hole in a pressurized plane cabin. It felt as if I was dropping out of my body-mind. I felt I was disappearing. I would wake up in a panic, crying and my mother would comfort me. I realized then what deep fear existed inside me, part of which was about losing

control. Was it death that I was afraid of? The dream felt so real, indistin-guishable from waking life.

Sometimes, as a child, I would lie in bed wondering what would happen if I did not exist. I would rack my brain trying to think of my own absence. I realized it was impossible. How could one imagine not being? That would be absurd. I knew my body could be lost, but I doubted “I” could cease to exist at all. With the body dead, it seemed possible that consciousness could continue. I didn’t know, but I wondered and had an intuitive “faith”. I still had no answer, though, as to what death was.

Once, as a boy, I almost drowned while playing in the ocean in Nor-mandy. I was pulled under by a powerful undertow, as small rocks rained down on me. With no sight of the surface, I struggled in a panic to come up. At one point, I sudden-ly seemed to be calmly observing myself from outside my body. It only lasted a second, and then I was overwhelmed again in the struggle to get out. Luckily, I did. Needless to say, I didn’t go back in the water! Here was another example of how fear was associated with the body, but awareness could separate from the body.

Falling asleep serves as a good ana-logy for dying. When we fall asleep, we seem to disappear. It happens naturally, without e ort or fear and without us knowing. We don’t control it. We do not resist; we even welco-me it! In deep sleep, the brain is ba-rely active. (Neuroscience is making great strides in studying this topic.)

Where does our awareness go? Un-like in death, we participate in sleep knowing we will return to the same body upon waking. Only then will we realize we are alive!

As a medical professional, I’ve wor-ked with people struggling with health issues for most of my adult life. I’ve always desired to help others overcome su ering. Yet it still some-times takes great e ort to distance myself from the situation. I used to consider death the ultimate su ering, but that has been changing as I learn more about the experiences of the dying and consciousness.

When you look into a dying person’s eyes, you usually do not see fear-pain, yes, but not fear. You see love for those around them, but also a graceful letting go-surrendering. To me, it seems that thoughts of dying, and identifying exclusively with the body, cause more su ering than the moment of death itself. Those around the dying person are more afraid than the person dying. You can see their love for the dying person, but also a struggle to hold on to them. If we can let go, we can help the dying pass on easefully.

“Death” like life, remains a mystery. But knowing that fear is only a part of the body-mind, and that awareness may not be dependent on the body, brings a non-theological faith that makes the mystery of life something to celebrate.

UNDERSTANDING THE MICRO-ENTREPRENEUR LIMITS

BY FATEN AMAMOU, CHARTERED ACCOUNTANTESCEC INTERNATIONAL - WWW.ESCEC-INTERNATIONAL.COM

Since 2014, the French government establi-shed a legal, simplified business status called the micro-entreprise which is described as «the pay-as-you-go system». It is aimed at reducing the taxes and financial costs of run-ning a small business in France.

However, it has some set turnover levels above which the micro-entrepreneur must change their legal status. Beyond this point, you need to become a sole trader (entreprise individuelle) or create a new legal status: A company (société).

Turnover limits 2018 for revenu 2017

; Service based business, or a ‘professional’ activity: the turnover cannot exceed 70,000€ per year.

; Commercial sales, bar/restaurant or furnished accommodation have a turnover limit of 170.000€ per year.

The turnover limits are calculated per year (12 months). If the beginning of the activity is mid-year (1/7) the turnover limits are divided by 2 (35,000€ for services and 85,000€ for com-mercial sales) (prorata temporis).

The micro-entrepreneur can follow up the li-mit monthly (5,833€ for services and 14,167€ for commercial sales), it’s an average. The aim being to stay under the annual turnover limits.

10 FOOD & DRINK EXPATRIATES MAGAZINE PARIS

What do you want to eat when it’s pouring with rain on a winter’s day in Paris? Per-sonally, I look for hot comfort food. When I think of French comfort food, my mind ins-tinctively drifts to the mountains.

‘Les Fondus de la Raclette’ are Savoyard bistros, founded in 2002 by three friends who wanted to create a mountain chalet atmosphere, reminiscent of their childhood holi-days in the 1970’s.

In these comfortable, cosy restaurants, traditional grills are set into the centre of tables where customers cook or warm their own food. The music, like the décor, is nostal-gic, with a mix of both French and English songs.

The small menu is composed of quality ingredients from the Savoie mountains, and features traditional dishes such as fondue Savoyarde, fondue with truffles, raclette, brasérade and tartiflette. There are also salads, tartines and some vegetarian raclette options as well as a child-ren’s menu. Chocolate fondue is also available as one of the dessert choices.

Raclette is served with a selection of charcuterie and a baked potato with sauce. Customers prepare their own portions with individual pans and spatulas. The word ‘raclette’ comes from the French verb ‘racler’ meaning to ‘scrape’ - the action originally used to scrape melted cheese from a grilled block. However, I usually choose the brasérade, which consists of cooking raw slices of beef on a grill, like a mini barbecue. I find that a Bourgogne Aligoté pairs very nicely with this type of food, but the restaurants also provide cider or beer, as well as other AOC wines.

I would definitely recommend going to these restaurants with friends, as the atmosphere is fun and the food is easy to share.

The service is friendly and efficient with inexpensive lunch menus from 13 € (Monday-Friday) - a small price for big portions. I can guarantee you will not leave hungry!

CLAUDINE OLIVIER

One of the many daunting challen-ges facing first-time parents is that of finding suitable

day care for their offspring. There is so much to take into consideration regarding envi-ronmental, health, safety, edu-cational and social aspects. Parents also want to feel that they can trust and communi-cate freely with the professio-nals looking after their child-ren and rely on them for help and advice.

After encountering this dilemma herself when her son was born, and not finding a satisfactory solution, Claudine Pribile de-cided to create a new type of child day care centre in Paris, based on her own high stan-dards and personal values as a defender of cultural diversity, sexual equality and humanistic principles.

Having spent her childhood tra-veling between the Cameroon, France, the Ivory Coast and California, Claudine was aware of the benefits of growing up in a multicultural, multilingual environment from an early age: “Having benefited from an inter-national education throughout my own childhood, I wanted to pass that chance along to others. I have always loved wor-

king with children and I wanted to use my international out-look as a means to benefit an entrepreneurial experience. In the current globalized context which has resulted in some people withdrawing into them-selves, I had the desire to set up an educational project, working with little ones and passing on humanistic and multicultural values to help them build to-morrow’s world. Having the be-nefit of a second language ear-lier is the best way to become a world citizen.”

Taking on a project that involves child care is never easy and in Claudine’s case it has been a personal crusade that has taken her two years to achieve. As she puts it, “I am dreamer, but also a process person (I worked as a consultant for 10 years), so I wanted to ‘build’ everything with early childhood experts.”

First there was the question of finding the right location. “Crea-ting a daycare centre in France is an administrative journey be-cause when it’s about infant and toddlers, French administration is really careful (rightly so, we are talking about raising child-ren). It was a miracle to find our perfect spot, far from the main roads, in the heart of the 15th arrondissement, and I fought for it, but fortunately I had some

luck too (you need both in Pari-sian real estate).”

Then there was the challenge of finding the right team to accom-pany her in her ambitious pro-ject. “When I began my hiring journey I felt like Indiana Jones! It took me several months to find the perfect team. I wanted at least one native anglophone speaker and a bilingual ear-ly childhood professional with an international approach and experience. But more than just speaking 2 languages, I wanted a team that would be able to welcome diversity and ensure all the physiological aspects, the security, the well-being and good development of the child-ren.”

When it came to the question of the children’s meals, Claudine was also demanding, “We work with a Parisian caterer specia-lized in early childhood nutri-tion, who uses organic, local, seasonal food. I’ve tasted the products myself and so has my two-year-old son. It’s tasty food, even without salt and milk!”

Another fundamentally impor-tant aspect of her centre is the parental support it provides, ”As a child I remember how hard it was for my parents to recreate their nest each time we moved, so having a welcoming place,

Bilingual pre-nursery school in the 15th district

Page 13: EXPATRIATESparis.expatriatesmagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/... · EXPATRIATES MAGA-EXPATRIATES MAGAZINE Issue 34 May 2017 Issue 41 ROSIE MCCARTHY @expatriatesmagazine @expatriates_magazine

a place to share fears or more positive feelings, would have been really helpful. When you are the parent of a newborn, in-fant or young child you always have questions and sometimes it’s complicated to find the right ear to listen. I want our crèche to be a place where parents can ask their questions freely. That’s why we decided with Vivian, our clinical psychologist and family coach, to provide a Q&A ses-sion with her every month for parents to ask any questions they may have. Of course, the full time team is also always there for them, and they can also contact Vivian by phone, email or Skype.”

In addition to day care du-ring the week, the centre also provides regular weekend workshops with external ex-perts, such as baby dance, gym and musical and acting after-noons for toddlers, enabling them to awaken their senses while having fun at the same time. It also offers coaching sessions in positive parentality and can even host and orga-nise children’s birthday parties, working with a team of creative party planners.

The Claudine Olivier pre-nur-sery school can accommodate up to 10 children from two and a half months to 4 years old, using an educational approach inspired by various pedagogi-cal trends (Montessori, Pikler, Faber and Mazlish). While there is no selection process as such, Claudine is looking to create a centre for like-minded parents: “We want to welcome families that truly share our pedagogical project and that are willing to enter our Claudine Olivier family team. There are no language criteria, all children can benefit from our dual language immer-sion and program. We are just looking for friendly parents who want to participate in our inter-national journey in French and in English.”

ROSIE MCCARTHY

SALUT YOUTUBE!

By day Rosie McCar-thy works in the HR department of a glo-bal cosmetic brand.

By night, the New Zealander leaves her corporate attire and steps in front of her camera to share her insights, opinions and advice on YouTube. Her channel, @NotEvenFrench, is proving to be very popular as she has seen her subscriber base grow to 13,000 followers in just 5 months.

What motivated you to start your own YouTube channel?I come from a small town in New Zealand and a family that never travelled. As such, I always felt that by moving to the opposite side of the world to a non-En-glish speaking country, I was embarking on a pretty special adventure. I dreamt of blogging about it, but never ended up getting around to it because...you know, life. As I approach my fifth year in France this year and am planning to apply for French nationality, it struck me how sad it is that I hadn’t cap-tured any of the crazy stories, mishaps and misadventures

that can be involved in beco-ming French. At the same time, I was having one of those ‘down moments’ about expat life in France that I couldn’t seem to shake. I wanted to conquer this feeling by finding a project that would reconnect me to my life here and all of the wonderful things I have learnt and lived here. I started watching You-Tube videos on how to start a YouTube channel and in Sep-tember 2017 I finally plucked up the courage to press ‘record.’

Your channel has become very popular in a very short time. What’s the reason for your success?I’ve been trying to figure this one out myself so I can keep doing what’s working! I think the fact that I subtitle in both English and French helps dramatically as that opens the door to two au-diences. I originally started my channel for expats but it turns out 60% of my audience so far are actually French people, cu-rious to see how they are per-ceived by us! In terms of the content itself, I receive a lot of nice feedback from my viewers

saying that my content is either well researched or well thought out and I’ve really tried to ana-lyse and understand certain aspects of the French culture. I do try to go deeper than the stereotypes or more obvious aspects that we’ve heard about many times already (e.g. la bise, the administration etc.) Last-ly, I try to answer every single comment and question in the first 48 hours of the video going live and to interact with my au-dience as much as possible.

What are the most interesting comments you’ve received? My viewers are constantly ex-plaining things, challenging me and enlightening me. I’m loving the learning I take from so many of them. For example, I’ve learnt that the pessimism and critical attitude in France can be linked to appearing more educated (links to philosophy and criti-cal thinking), hence its value in this society. The best com-ments of all though are when I have helped a fellow expat with something they were struggling with, or when a French person tells me that I’ve helped them to

Telling Expats How It Is!

fall in love with France again.

Given that your topics are what you’ve experienced, it seems you’ve had quite an adventure!Oh yes, I have so many di-verse experiences in this city! I have studied here, interned at a French luxury giant, worked in a tech start-up, job-hunted like a crazy person for the holy grail CDI, learnt French from scratch, hustled for visas yearly and been thrown into all kinds of crazy situations in between. I’ve had psychotic managers and administration procedures go wrong and I’ve got the battle scars to prove it! I’ve also had so many amazing firsts: first time in a non-English speaking country, first real croissant, first time using an underground transportation system...

How long does it take to put a video together? It depends. I like to research my videos in general, so it can take anywhere from 1 to 3 hours to get the content together and map it out. Filming is the easy bit, I just need to chat away for 30 minutes or so and I’ll have

enough for a punchy 10 minute video. The editing takes about an hour on average and the uploading to YouTube another hour. The final steps are subtit-ling the videos in English and in French plus all the finishing touches, such as setting it up to suggest more of my videos to my viewers at the end. I’d be lying if I said this took less than 2 hours. It’s a bit scary to admit, but I guess you could estimate about 5-8 hours per video.

And you’ve been collaborating with other expats...Yes, I realised pretty early on that maintaining this channel with my thoughts alone wasn’t sustainable. I haven’t lived eve-ry version of life in France, nor have I experienced everything there is to experience here. However, I can find people who have different stories to mine. I’ve teamed up with American blogger Kate from www.unin-tentionallyfrenchified.com, for example, for our video series on dating French men. My Austrian expat friend Isabelle and I have also tackled the culture shocks of the French workplace. I will

soon be teaming up with other photographers, bloggers, cor-porate professionals and co-medians for their take on life in France, so watch this space!

Finally... What topics can we expect to see in the next few weeks?Oooh so many good ones! I have the third installment of my culture shocks series and a hu-miliating video on my most em-barrassing moments in France (well, some of them)! I’ve also partnered with a fellow expat to celebrate International Wo-men’s day with a video on the French women you absolutely need to know about, but have probably never heard of. More long term, I’m hoping to partner with more French people for my series #AskAFrench where we put the tough questions to them, like ‘Why DO you complain so much?!’ For now though, new videos are released weekly, so the content is always fresh!

Kyla Tulou, the stunning ‘other half ’ of professional rugby player Alex Tu-lou, shares her story about her IVF journey, maternity fashion and style.

Originally from Hawkes Bay, New Zealand, Kyla moved to France with Alex when he joined the Montpellier rugby team in 2011. She created her blog, ‘The Evolution Road’, to chronicle her own challenges with fertility.

How did creating your blog help you on your journey to becoming a mum?To write, and then push the button to publish was daunting at first. Opening up about my struggles made me feel vulnerable and uncomfortable, until I received my first private email from someone I knew, but had never known was also struggling with the same things I was. She thanked me and said I had given her hope! I’ve learnt that sharing is reciprocal. When I opened up, others found it easier to do the same. Communication is so vital.

What would you say your blog brings to others looking for support or advice with fertility?HOPE! Hope in the possibility of what can seem like a never-ending battle. Fertility issues can really make you question so much about your-self. I was able to get my husband to write a post regarding dealing with infertility, and that is so insightful for women and for men in the same po-sition. The blog offers hope and insight. That was always the goal when talking about IVF and my road to pregnancy.

What advice would you give to someone in a similar position today? It’s hard to believe, but there is still a lot of stig-ma attached to IVF. Not many people are able to talk about fertility problems, but it’s exactly what you need to do. TALK, share your struggles, allow people to understand the position you are in. I spoke to a girlfriend. It was from that conversation that I was able to find a better specialist.

As crazy as it might sound, after your 2-year journey to conceive, you are now pregnant again, naturally.

FERTILITY, FASHION AND THEEVOLUTIONARY ROAD

I would not have believed it was possible unless it actually happened to me! The female body is amazing! I remember my doctor telling me, ‘It’s hard right now, but after one pregnancy your hormones can reset and natural conception can happen.’ I’m pretty sure I laughed and swore at him. Safe to say he was right; I stopped breast-feeding and I fell pregnant 6 months after my son Ryder was born.

Maternity fashion isn’t always easy, but can be so rewarding if you find a style that works for you, not to mention a few comfy clothes for good measure. In your opinion, what are the maternity must-haves?Good support bras, a LBD, ribbed fabrics, (better for when the bump grows), a maxi dress and leg-gings in the cooler months.

Does your style change in the course of a pregnancy?I don’t have a pregnancy style, I just like what I normally wear, so I buy things in larger sizes.

Can you share any fashion tips or advice with our readers?Pinterest is a great place for inspiration if you’re stuck on what or how to wear something. Type in key words, see the screen shot looks you like and go from there. Slow and steady is the way to build a wardrobe that is completely you!

Being the other half to a professional rugby player must have its own challenges, espe-cially when you are far from home. What are the positive and negative sides to that? The highlights include meeting new people, who become friends and then like family. The most challenging aspect of this lifestyle though is being away from my family.

Did that lifestyle mean additional challenges for you when you were going through IVF?Rugby schedules and ovulation do not synchro-nize so yes it did! Most appointments were spent figuring out if we’d be in the same town when needed. If not, I took medication to speed up or delay ovulation. Our doctor was and is amazing though, so I wasn’t concerned at all about having to do things in a foreign country.

Raising a child can be tough at the best of times, but raising a child on the other side of the world, often on your own, must be even more stressful. Do you have any tips for mums in a similar situation? Create your own community of support as soon as possible! Get to know your neighbors, you’ll feel safer for it. Learn to speak the language, it will make for less anxious times when your partner/husband is away. Something people may not know about the world of ‘WAG’ is that ‘WAG’ ac-tually stands for the Waiting Around Girl, you do a lot of waiting around…

TRICIA & JEAN-BAPTISTE BEAT THE DISTANCE

18 FAMILY EXPATRIATES MAGAZINE PARIS

Jean-Baptiste Cabantous grew up with a vivid imagi-nation, always dreaming of different realities. He loved

the movies and how they made him imagine other worlds and their potential. His career started with a job at Disneyland Paris. For a young man with an avid love of alternate realities it was a great place to start, with so many different worlds colli-ding in the same place. At An-nette’s Diner there, he learnt all there is to know about restau-rant work and it was here that he got the idea of creating his own fifties-style diner.

Not knowing of any places in Paris with a real fifties-style experience, he took a gamble and started to plan a restaurant in the city center at St. Michel. Jean-Baptiste wanted to create this first restaurant around the theme of Happy Days, the American TV show that idea-lized life from the mid-fifties to sixties, but there was one huge problem: None of the American suppliers wanted to deliver to Paris.

As expats, we all know the dilemma of paperwork and bureaucracy in France, but Jean-Baptiste persevered as his dream was to have real Ameri-can products and an authentic experience in his restaurant. Eventually he found Bars and

Booths, in the USA who agreed to meet him.

Never did he imagine that this meeting, an interfering aunt, and an exasperated comment would change his life forever!

When Jean-Baptiste met G.W. and Barbara, the owners of Bars and Booths, they got on famously. About five years after their business relationship be-gan, when Jean-Baptiste flew Barbara and G.W. over for the opening of his fifth restaurant, Barbara showed Jean-Baptiste a picture of their niece, Tricia. Jean-Baptiste was enchanted but never once imagined he could have an opportunity to do more than think how lovely she was.

However, Barbara saw Jean-Baptiste’s reaction and encouraged him to speak with Tricia, thinking that perhaps they would get along. When Tricia received his Facebook friend request and saw he was already friends with other family members she accep-ted it, wondering «Who is this guy?». But she was skeptical, and avoided responding to his messages, thinking the entire situation was rather strange. She would take days or even weeks to reply to him, if at all.

On one occasion, Jean-Baptiste

knew he was coming to Vegas for work so he asked Tricia, as he had countless times before, if he could fly over to D.C. and take her out for a cup of coffee (distance was never an issue for him, he asked often and even offered to fly from Paris to DC simply for a cup of coffee!). However, Tricia kept ignoring him or hesitating, so he finally wrote her a last message to say that he was not going to ask again, «I give up because I am chasing something that doesn’t appear to want to be caught!».

In the end it was Barbara who came to their rescue. She de-cided to set up a business meeting with Jean-Baptiste, tel-ling Tricia to arrive at the end of their breakfast and assuring her that she would not leave unless Tricia was comfortable.

Jean-Baptiste felt nervous to be finally meeting Tricia and when he took the coffee service from the waiter to pour for the family, Tricia saw just how nervous he was. Her fears were laid to rest and she told her aunt that she could leave them alone. From that point on there was no more hesitation from Tricia. She never looked back!

Tricia remembers «I put my hand out for him to take it so I could pull him across the street. Jean-Baptiste just stared at it. I

finally had to grab his hand! He never attempted to kiss me, so I had to initiate our first kiss. I didn’t fall in love at first sight, but I definitely fell in love over coffee. He kept me laughing all that day... and every day since. I was completely calm near him and he was a complete gentle-man.»

For ten months they dated long distance, coping with a six hour time difference, and all the other difficulties separate lives entail when there are vast differences in culture, time-zones and busy careers to take into considera-tion. They prepared dinner to-gether on FaceTime, watched their favorite shows together on the couch with FaceTime and did the normal things that couples do as they got to know each other, but from a distance.

Jean-Baptiste flew to Rich-mond, VA once a month for the week or even weekend, often leaving work on Friday and ar-riving home the next Monday having had little or no sleep, just to keep pursuing his dream. He had loved Tricia on sight, but he also loved his business dream and he was determined to in-clude her in his vision!

Each time Jean-Baptiste saw Tricia, he knew waiting for her was worth it. He waited every day while she worked to see her afterwards. He waited as they grew to know each other...

Things began to change when he asked her to come to Eu-rope and to see the Champion’s League final game, (Europe’s equivalent to the Super Bowl for soccer). Tricia thought, «Sure, I’ll go to a little football game.»

Little did she know she was European at heart and would eventually support the opposite team to Jean-Baptiste’s!

In February 2014, Tricia quit her job and decided to move to Pa-ris to be closer to her French prince! They had spent some time figuring out how best to love each other, and now they wanted to continue. Tricia was enchanted by Paris and became an avid PSG fan (Jean-Baptiste had grown up supporting Mar-seille). They found a flat and started to build their life to-gether.

Jean-Baptiste had a last sur-prise for Tricia as they fell in love again day in and day out. He booked a surprise trip to Monaco and took her out on a gorgeous yacht for the day. As they were cruising on the sea, a

plane flew overhead trailing a banner with the words: «Tricia, do you want to marry me?»

Jean-Baptiste has fallen in love with his wife every day since. Their marriage was held, by chance, on the anniversary of their first Facebook message, November 23rd.

They have three children and they live with a work/ life ba-lance, focusing every day, on keeping happiness in their lives. According to Jean-Bap-tiste, «A dream can only be achieved if you have people around you to give it mea-ning.» For Jean-Baptiste his dream is sharing the magic of alternate realities with you.

They still work with Tricia’s fa-mily in the USA, seeing them every four months. They have

built Happy Days Diner (HD Diner) into a chain with 10 res-taurants in Paris, the suburbs and Lille.

Now, as their children grow, they realize how family needs to be incorporated into all as-pects of life. They have made it a priority for parents with young children to have a plea-sant dining experience, crea-ting a kids’ corner in the Opéra and Levallois locations of HD Diner.

Jean-Baptiste and Tricia live the magic we all dream of and they owe their happiness an interfering aunt, an exaspe-rated comment, perseverance and the courage to pursue a dream.

Imagine what you could achieve if you follow yours?

TIPS TO MAKE A LONG DISTANCE RELATIONSHIP

WORKTRICIA

1. Exercise patience. Long distance is hard, more so when there is a large time difference. It was especially difficult for JB to wait for me to finish my work day. He was quite patient and I am forever grateful.

2. Be prepared to eat spaghetti and rice for a month while you save every penny you can manage, to afford another expensive journey. In the end, those few extra pounds you gain are worth it!

3. Communicate! This is especially important if you both have a different first language. Words and expressions mean different things when translated.

4. Invest in your computer hardware and sof-tware. FaceTime, or the equivalent, is key for long distance communication. Also, you need a strong WiFi signal!

5. Take a leap of faith. If the opportunity pre-sents itself for you to move, just do it if it feels right! You don’t want to look back later with regret...

JEAN-BAPTISTE1. Change the time on your clock to your partner’s local time.

2. Trust each other, take a breath and shut down your imagination.

3. Try to FaceTime every day, talk about your daily life… You have to feel your partner isn’t far away! And text each other as if you’re in the same country.

4. Straight after a trip, schedule the next visit so you both know when you’ll see each other again.

5. Try to show your love and how much this love will be stronger than anything in the world. Try to send lots of signs of love and be romantic!

We are an English-speaking community based in Paris that provides a wide array of learning and volunteer opportunities through art,

cultural and language programs and social activities. In recent years the number of designers with their own labels having their own boutiques in Paris has sadly fallen dramatically. Paris is home to the big fashion houses such as Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Dior and Balmain, to name but a few. The city now also houses all the usual leading global fashion retailers like Zara and H&M, whose recognizable signs in high streets dotted all over the world gives the sensation that we’re always in the same place, despite clocking up thousands of air miles.

In today’s precarious European economy, it’s completely understandable that many graduates from the top French fashion schools choose to work for the big brand names, preferring job se-curity to the risk of launching their own labels. Young designers who do choose to pursue an independent road are often forced to abandon their dreams due to hardship and are swallowed into conglomerates, or forced into an exclusively online existence. Their creativity is frequently preyed upon and their original designs are often copied and churned out by the giant retailers against whom they have no power. So fashion in Paris is now dictated by a handful of talented ‘star’ fashion designers, catering to the high end of the market, with miscellaneous soulless, fashion business amalgamations catering for the rest of the market. Apart from the big fashion

houses, today’s fashion tendencies in Paris are reflected by a sad lack of originality in many of the global retailer shop fronts. Might the lack of independent label designer boutiques be one of the reasons why Paris, the previously acclaimed ‘fashion capital of the world,’ has in recent years been usurped by New York and London?

The decline of individual designer label bou-tiques has definitely detracted from two highly entertaining Parisian past times; people watching and window shopping in the former fashion hub of the world. Consequently, if you can find an individual Parisian designer boutique that suits both your look and pocket you’ll be an intricate part of keeping Paris Parisian, with your ‘je ne sais quoi’ allure versus a ‘one for all, all for one’ look. Encouraging the survival of designer boutiques in the Parisian landscape also keeps the streets of Paris actually looking Parisian. Wouldn’t it be a shame if Paris, traditionally re-nowned for its small, specialized type boutiques, were to become a mere overextended tentacle of the giant global retail system?

Designer label boutiques such as Kim Bernar-din’s are resiliently antipodal to this sad pros-pect. Originally from Seoul, Kim graduated from one of the top Parisian fashion schools, subse-quently hosted her first fashion show in 1995, and went on to open her own boutique at 20 rue des Saints-Pères in the fashionable Saint-Germain-des-Prés neighborhood in 2004. Her line reflects her passion for nature, color and experimental tissues. We can also see in her creations the influence of her extensive travels, where East meets West in perfect harmony. You feel this harmony when you slip on one of her creations, as a Kim Bernardin piece not only flatters the figure, but also procures a wonderful feeling of ease and freedom. Her clothes flow;

“no restrictions” is one of her mottos.

21-year-old Irish student, Rebecca Denard, currently studying for a masters in Cultural Mediation at the Sorbonne Paris 3, discove-red Kim’s boutique on one of her lunchtime strolls. When she tried on Kim’s outfits she felt that along with giving her an arty allure they were comfortable and in sync with the creativity of her Sorbonne projects. Kim then chose her to be a muse for her latest collec-tion.

Kim Bernardin is now one of the few comple-tely independent label designers still main-taining a shop front and showroom in Paris. The keen eyes of Paris’ fashionista tourists and expatriates have been a great genera-tor for her label. Her clients, like herself, are often multicultural and original. Over the last decade Kim Bernardin creations have graced the backs of many stylish ladies from New York to Timbuktu.

24 FAMILY EXPATRIATES MAGAZINE PARIS

Being a student myself, I’ve met a lot of foreign students here, which has sometimes led to encounters with foreign wo-men. From both my own and my peers’ experience, and with a general knowledge about French men, here are 10 things that French men love about non-French women.

1The new experienceThis first and simplest rea-son sounds obvious. Dating

or having a casual relationship with a non-French woman is at least a marginally different ex-perience from dating a French one, in terms of culture or cha-racter. Some would say that it is even refreshing in some cases!

The traits in which those diffe-rences will be found vary great-ly depending on the woman’s nationality and the man’s ex-pectations: this also means that a significant difference from French women in some res-pects may also be perceived as negative.

2 Learning a languageOf course, relationships are never just tools for

self-improvement. Neverthe-less, being with a foreign per-son can bring added value to a potential relationship and it can be intellectually stimulating to speak a foreign language with a native speaker. A French man may therefore like to speak En-glish with a woman he is in a relationship with, even if his English isn’t great - and it very often isn’t!

3Sharing cultures No, this is not an analogy for sex! It can be very in-

teresting to discover a foreign culture through another person. This is even truer in the case of a romantic or sexual encounter. Despite the stereotypes, French men are not always chauvinis-tic and arrogant!

10 THINGS FRENCH MEN

LOVE ABOUT FOREIGN WOMEN

We hear a lot of stereotypes about the “French lover”, in France and elsewhere. As a Frenchman, I frequently hear that my male compatriots are generally successful with the women they en-counter abroad, because of a certain French aura. It is possible that there are qualities about French men that women abroad like more than French women do, but what about the opposite? What do French men living in France like about foreign women here?

4A different taste in looksWhile straight French men

generally like French women and their looks, some may be less attracted to them, and more so to non-French women. This can be true both in terms of style (clothing, makeup) and in terms of ethnicity, and even sometimes in terms of fitness, as some na-tionalities tend to just work out more than the French do.

5Different sexual habitsThere it is, the paragraph you’ve all been waiting for.

Of course, one appealing aspect of foreign women for French men is the different sexual expe-rience. This difference in sex will vary greatly depending on the individual non-French woman and the country she is from, but it can be a powerful motivation to encounter foreign women. Anyone who says otherwise is not being honest!

6A different relationship experienceForeign women may have

a radically different way of da-ting from French women: for instance, the American concept of dating isn’t really a thing in France. Either you’re in a rela-tionship, or you’re not more than sex buddies. Some French men may prefer a different way of seeing a relationship than the ty-pical French way, like this Ameri-can sweet middle spot of dating!

7 Showing France This is close to the culture sharing thing, albeit more

specific. French men love to show their country, their city or just their direct surroundings to foreign people. This is especially true for foreign girls they have a relationship with.

8 Showing offComing from a French guy, the stereotype of French

pride, or even chauvinism, may not be completely wrong! This is not an indictment of all my fel-low French men, nor necessarily a bad thing. Anyway, this means

that almost any French man will enjoy being somewhat of an ambassador for his country, its way of life and its culture. This is not a bad thing, as it can imply plenty of good wine.

9 The thrill of the chase All things considered, France is a sexually liberal

country. One-night stands and ‘friends with benefits’ are a big thing here, and there is nothing close to a three-dates rule AT ALL. This is not something that all French men love: some can enjoy the thrill of the chase more than the norm. This is a

potential reason for them to love foreign women, who may be harder to seduce!

10The possibility of leaving France and building a life

elsewhereThis is obviously not the case for most French men, but some may just want to build a life elsewhere. Meeting and dating a foreign woman may just be the foundation of this dream life, and of a family outside of France, in the partner’s country.

You may have fallen in love with the charm and beauty of Paris but something tells us your hair has not...

We’ve all said, more than likely on a weekly ba-sis, that the water in Paris does absolutely no-thing for the condition or the beauty of our hair.

Hard water is a common problem in cities, caused by a build-up in the concentration of minerals like magnesium and calcium and too much chlorine. These prevent moisture from entering the hair which causes ‘hair dooms-day’...everyday!

Here are a few tips to help feed your hair as best you can:

; Try not to wash your hair every day. Allow natural oils to build up and nourish it.

; A deep cleansing/clarifying shampoo will remove surface build-up of too many minerals.

; A good shower head filter which reduces limescale (can be sourced online or a local homestore) will make a huge difference to your apartment.

; Rinse your hair occasionally with bottled water, after you have rinsed the conditioner out. The cold water seals the cuticle. Apply some coconut oil to the ends and go out feeling a million dollars

; Hair loves rain...On a wet and miserable Parisian day dance around Park Monceau and surrender to the elements, let nature take its course and feel fresh.

Look after your hair as you would your skin, af-ter all it is your best accessory!

Aries (21 March – 19 April) - You can have several new work opportunities that will improve your working situation. You can be offered multiple jobs, get a job that’s bigger and better than the one you have, or try working for yourself. You come up with new plans for how to get further ahead in your career, and these plans are practical and realistic. You’re more emotionally charged by words and your own words are more filled with emotion as well.

Taurus (20 April – 20 May) - You do your best thinking on your own, and need some time alone, so that you don’t become mentally exhausted by every-one. You may have a hard time focusing on things for a long time, and wander from one thought to the next. Your im-agination soars though, and this is a good period for creativity. You’re in high demand with friends, and group activ-ities can keep you pleasantly busy this month.

Gemini (21 May – 20 June) - You’re driv-en to experience life in new ways and expand your world. You see how big the world is, and you want to explore every exponent of it. If you can travel, do so. You have a lot on your mind, a lot to say, and will seek people out. This is a good time to get things off of your chest that you’ve been refraining from saying. You’re more defensive with your beliefs, and will fight with anyone over philoso-phy, but in a more friendly way.

Cancer (21 June – 22 July) - Your mind works best when you’re working with other people, and you come up with innovative solutions to problems. Life seems sunnier, brighter, and more alive now, and you don’t want to get stuck in somber moods anymore. There’s too much for you to explore for that. You just want to get out and go. This is a good period for your health, and you can make great strides to improve it.

Leo (23 July – 22 August) - You have energy and drive, and you can make great strides. You also believe strongly in the causes that you defend, and can do some good in the world. You may spend more time with your friends, but also be more argumentative and com-petitive. You could take a few relation-ships, or one in particular, to the next level, furthering your commitment to someone.

Virgo (23 August – 22 September) – You think more about your future, and you have big ideas for how you’d like your future to be. Those who are sin-gle can have more opportunities to be in a committed relationship. You can strengthen all of your relationships, in-cluding the one with yourself. You try to bring more harmony and balance into your life, and believe that charm and grace is what will win people over.

Libra (23 September – 22 October) – You’re excited about life and all that it has to offer you right now. You’re posi-tive, you’re driven, and you embrace the new in a way that you don’t usually. You want to have some fun, explore, be ad-

venturous, and take risks. You can also increase your spirituality during this time, become interested in the meta-physical, or begin something important in secret or behind-the-scenes.

Scorpio (23 October – 21 November) - You begin this month likely riding a surge in energy, feeling very good with yourself, and those good feelings could continue through the month. You may be presented with a new way to make money. You can have the opportunity to be more successful. You can also focus on your life path and make sure you’re going in the direction that you want to be going in. If you don’t feel you are, you can correct your course.

Sagittarius (22 November - 21 Decem-ber) - You feel good when you have a di-rection and a sense of purpose. You feel most like yourself when you feel finan-cially secure and stable, are engaging in financial transactions, and when you’re indulging. You seem serious, probing, and deep. You’re so busy this month that it’s easy to get distracted and miss important personal information. Work-ing your charm is effortless now, but do watch out for confusion in love and friendship.

Capricorn (22 December – 19 Janu-ary) – Your creativity can soar, so this is a good time for you if you do creative work. Inspiration is everywhere. You can have positive dealings with other people’s money, and make more mon-ey yourself through other people. You could decide to start something new with a group that you belong to. This can be a good time to take on a busi-ness partner, and you may rely on their resources to improve your own.

Aquarius (20 January – 18 February) - You could begin learning something new, wanting to expand your mind. You’ll likely take a lot of trips in your head, dreaming of escaping mundane life. Your mind wants to experience more than it has thus far. You dig into old issues that you hold deep inside of you, and you work on letting them go. This can be an extremely transformative period and make your life infinitely bet-ter if you go with it.

Pisces (19 February – 20 March) - You could begin a new creative project that leads to something big. You seem more gregarious with your relatives, and enjoy spending time with your family, or with those who you think of as family. You can do more with a partner than alone, and this can be a good time to find a partner, professionally or person-ally. Those in a relationship can bring their commitment to another level.
