DEAR READER
City development planning all around the world
faces major challenges to be able to provide quality
of life for a continuously increasing number of inha-
bitants - according to a UN study on the world’s po-
pulation, by 2050 about 60-70% of all people will live
in urban agglomerations. How can we meet their
needs in housing, access to basic services, water
and energy supply, waste disposal, infrastructure or
transport?
In this context, solutions based on renewable energy,
sustainable construction and rehabilitation, energy
efficiency, alternative mobility, optimized manage-
ment of water and waste constitute key aspects for
smart cities. Sustainable urban technologies are one
of the mainstays of the economy and considered to
be also a long-term engine for sustainable economic
development and well-being.
In Austria, we believe it to be of primary importance
to spur and diversify the use of urban technologies in
order to achieve climate-friendly energy supplies
and high living standards. Our participation in Smart
City Expo World Congress (SCEWC) reflects Austria’s
strong potential for innovation in this sector. We
introduce innovative technologies for city concepts
as well as urban, water and waste management,
smart homes and mobility, energy generation and
supply, and not least the strategies and visions of the
two major Austrian cities Vienna and Graz.
To meet the participating Austrian exhibitors perso-
nally and to learn more about their newest break-
through technologies we invite you to visit Advantage
Austria in Hall 2 and to attend the “Austria Show-
case” on Wednesday, 16th of November, 9:45-14:00
hours in room 1.4. Area CC1.
We will also be happy to offer you help and advice for
doing business with Austria in general.

WHY SMART CITY GRAZ?
The City of Graz combines World Cultural Herita-
ge and Mediterranean flair with the creative “City
of Design”. Being an interface to South-Eastern
Europe with a dynamic economy, Graz is also a
location for research and education that meets
international standards. The population of Graz is
rapidly increasing while at the same time building
land is limited. In addition, the city is located in a
basin which poses climatic challenges and limits
the possibilities of further extension. Therefore,
the low-emission, resource conserving and energy
-efficient Smart City Graz is an integral part of the
new urban development concept. It is for the first
time to be realised in the district Waagner Biro as
a compact quarter with urban mixed usage, attrac-
tive public spaces and a high quality of life.
VISION GRAZ 2050
In 2050, Graz is a dynamic and compact city cha-
racterised by mixed urban usage, attractive public
space and a high quality of life. Consistently pur-
suing the Smart City strategies and raising public
awareness have made it possible to not only redu-
ce the consumption of energy and resources but
consequently also the emission of hazardous subs-
tances, paving the way for a Zero Emission
City. 100% of the required energy is produced
in the region from renewable energy resour-
ces.
