O ne of Hudson County’s oldest and most established com-munities, Jersey City Heights, is steeped in tradition. The neighborhood, which was once part of the munici-

pality of Hudson City, became an enclave for Irish immigrantswho migrated to New Jersey in the mid-1800s. More recently,

Latin Americans have made the Heights their home, making thisone of Jersey City’s most diverse neighborhoods.

As the community’s name implies, the Heights is one of thehighest points in Jersey City, overlooking Hoboken. It offersunobstructed sweeping views of the Manhattan skyline acrossthe Hudson River.

Affectionately known simply as the Heights, the area is hometo some of Jersey City’s best open space resources, includingRiverview-Fisk Park, which hosts a weekly farmers market, and

Pershing Field, which boasts a pool, ice rink, and baseball fields. The 14-acre Jersey CityReservoir is also located here, situatedbetween Summit, Central, and Jeffersonavenues, opposite Pershing Field.

The reservoir provided drinking water tocity residents until it was decommissionedaround 1990.

Built in the late 1870s, the reservoir – offi-cially known for years as Reservoir No. 3 –was planned as part of an integrated series ofwater supplies that would provide potablewater for city residents. For at least 110 yearsthe reservoir system did just that until it wasshut down and the city started getting itsdrinking water from the Boonton Reservoir inMorris County.

After its closure Reservoir 3 was abandonedfor years but has preserved and refashioned asa recreational park for residents.

FOR SHOPPERSThe Heights also has plenty to offer shop-

pers, both those who live in the communityand those who come from the nearby Journal

Square and downtown neighborhoods. Thearea is home to several family-owned smallbusinesses that have been in operation forgenerations. While a number of large region-al chains have come to Jersey City in recentyears and have settled in other communities, the appeal of the Heights-based “mom-and-pops” is their neighborhood charm.

The heart of the Heights’ business district isCentral Avenue, a three-quarter mile stretchof commercial establishments betweenManhattan Avenue and North Street. The dis-trict is home to more than 450 businessesranging from fresh bakeries to jewelry stores, and everything in between.

In recent years there’s been a push to makethe Jersey City Heights a destination beyondits recreational and retail offerings and localartists have tried to make it an arts hub aswell. Last year, with funding from HudsonCounty, local artists painted two muralswhich now grace the outside walls of .99Power and Daisy Cleaners. Three additionalmurals were later commissioned, bringing thetotal number of murals up to five.
