Evaluation for Media Magazine

By

Thomas Cousins

Page 2: Evaluation

In what ways does my media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of

real media products? My magazine follows many professional conventions that are used in

media products. The first convention that I have used that I am going to talk about is that I have used a main image on the background of my front cover, this is a typical convention that all professional magazine institutions such as NME and Q use.

Another typical convention that I have used in my magazine is that Istuck to using just three main colours, those colours being black, white and purple. These can be seen in the picture of my front cover above.

The third and final convention that I have used in my magazine that you can see in a typical music magazine is the strapline and masthead, these are show on all professional music magazine.

A convention that I have used that cannot be seen in professional magazines is that the heading of my double page spread has been done in two different coloured back grounds, I decided to this for effect.

How does your media product represent particular social

groups? My product represents a certain social group in which

people who like to rave and this type of music is typically played loudly in cars with young lads inside them.

I have represented these people by the two artists on the double page spread, they are seen in typical young persons clothing with their hoods up. These people are not the type of people that are typical role models but instead are shown as rebellious because they have their hoods up.

So this magazine is aimed for young lads that have cars and like to play their music loud.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media

product and why? There could be a magazine printing agency that prints the

copies of the magazine, these can be found all over the country and are not kept in one particular location.

A small independent media company could take this magazine.

• HMV, Play.com and Amazon might sell this magazine because it advertises some of their products.

• Other institutions such as Tesco, WHSmith and ASDA may sell my product because they sell a wide variety of magazines

Who would be the audience for your media project?

The audience for my media product would be men and women between the ages of 15 and 24. I am aiming my media product at these people because that is the age category of the people that normally enjoy listening to this type of music. Another reason for this age range because these people are more likely to go to clubs and raves which typically has this genre of music playing in the clubs.

How did you attract/address your audience?

• The latest up and coming DJ’s• Using a big picture of the biggest artist at the time• Using the words “I’m Ready to Take on The World” in

quotes• Addressed the audience in a formal and professional

manner with spelling and punctuation done correctly

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this

product?I have learnt that the process of creating a media product is

a long winded process and that many companies do very well to get a magazine out once every two weeks. I had to adjust to the technology that I used because I have never created a magazine before, so I had to learn how to use the different software appropriately. This took time because I had not got a clue how to use the programme to start off with, so I had to learn how to use it right from the basics.

Page 8: Evaluation

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the

progression from it to the full product?

I have learnt how to use the tools in the correct places for each of the different softwares. I have also had to adapt myself to the different softwares because they would not of been my first choices for creating a magazine.

I have also learnt how to professionally take and edit pictures so that they are good enough to be put in the magazine, this was the longest process in the whole creation of the magazine. The last significant thing that I think that I have learnt to do is that i have had to learn how to use the imaginative side of my brain because I have had to come up with writing for some of my work, this writing had to sound convincing and make people want to read it so I have had to dig deep for this writing.
