Evaluation 1 : In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and

conventions of real media products?

Masthead

• My masthead is different to other ones I have seen on magazines that are in the market, this means that mine will hopefully stand one and attract people to it. I have chosen the name ‘Vertex’ for my magazine because it means the highest point of something in this case the highest point in the charts which is relevant because it is a charts magazine.

Front Cover

• My front cover I think is similar to other magazines I have seen in the market regarding to the layout but the masthead, cover lines and the feature image placed together create a different magazine from other ones in the market. Because it is a charts magazine it would normally feature a more generic singer but I have chosen to go against the stereotype and put a new break out artist which is good as it would help my magazine stand out from others.

Contents Page• My contents page is similar to Q

magazine, this is because I used the same idea of their layout as it was the best one I had seen in the market. Although I put my own mark on it so it will stand out from other magazines such as Q. I have spilt my contents into two sections being features and regulars. Features is what is put into the magazine for that month only and regulars is what is in the magazine every month.

Double Page Spread

• My double page spread follows other layouts from magazines that are in the market, with a picture of the artist on one side and the interview on the other. I have used this layout because I feel it looks more professional and allows everything to be well spaced out.

Images

• The images I have used through my magazine are quite basic and only had very little editing with just brightening them and minor photo shopping. My main artist that is featured on the front cover, content page and double page spread is holding a guitar this means at first glance of the magazine you know it is about music. Because of this it is clear that it is focused on music and has a love for it which may attract more people to the magazine. The smaller images inside are of a female singing which is more stereotypical and is something you would find in most magazine which is why I felt it necessary to put it in and it also features a boy band which will most likely attract more a female audience as that is want teenage girls are most likely looking for in a chart music.

“Subscribe”• The subscribe text in the

magazine gives it more of a professional look about it and makes it look as if it is a real magazine in the market. The smaller details such as this are very effective in the magazine and I feel it makes a big difference as it makes it look like more planning has gone into the actual making of the magazine as these small details have been included.

Pull Quotes• I feel that a pull quote is an

extremely good technique used in a magazine and is why it used in nearly every magazine I have looked at when researching. I have chosen to pull out from the interview something that was said about One Direction because I know that my target audience which is 17 -19 are people that would listen to that type of music so they may be more interested to read it if they know One Direction have been mentioned.

Article Content • My article content starts with a small

introduction which introduces my artist to the readers. This will draw people into carry on reading because its giving them the background information which will hopefully interest people enough to read the entire interview. I have done a simple question and answer interview with the artist which I have seen a lot in magazines in the market so I thought it would give it a more professional look as it has followed the same layout to them but I have put my own twist on it so it isn't exactly the same as other magazines.

• I have included where the artists new single is out which makes it look more professional and adding these small details makes it look like it could be in the market along side other magazines.

Cover Lines• The cover lines is what draws

people into reading the magazine, so I have chosen the best of the contents page to be put on the front cover and used as the cover line. The interview with the artist Josh Jones has been placed at the top and is bigger to the other cover lines because that is the main focus on this months magazine so the audience should be placing their attention to him first of all.

• I have put a cover line about the best singles and albums on it because then people are straight away aware that this is a chart magazine as it stands out because its been put in red to highlight it for the audeince.
