WHAT IS TEPPANYAKI?

The clue’s in the name with Teppanyaki:Teppan means iron plate and yaki means grilled

or griddled. So, it’s food cooked on a hot plate,

and I was treated to a high-end example of

the art in the Palace Hotel Tokyo.

Compared to Japan’s ancient traditional cuisines, Teppanyaki

is ‘new’ - it was invented in 1945 by a Japanese restaurant

chain and quickly became popular with foreigners, who

found the food more familiar than sushi, noodles and the rest,

and enjoyed watching the artistry of the Teppanyaki chefs.

Nothing with four legs was eaten in Japan until 1860,

reputedly when the emperor, on asking a US visitor why

the Americans were so much taller than the Japanese, got

the response “because we eat meat.” The Teppanyaki cooking

method lends itself to a good quality meat and seafood.

The chef puts the oil and salt flakes on the hot plate together

then, when the salty oil is smoking hot, adds the finest meat,

seafood, or both.

Ethan Maull "Up Yours To Cancer" Foundation

When a family friend was diagnosed with Breast Cancer,

Ethan Maull, at just 6 years old, helped his father Darren raise

over £4,000 for Cancer Research. Darren and his friends, first

took on the Yorkshire Peaks and a short time later completed

the National 3 Peaks. On the last climb, Ethan joined his father

making the final ascent to the top of Snowden, an amazing feat

for a small boy!

Just 2 1/2 years later, Christmas brought a devastating blow to

the Maull family when Ethan at just 8 years old was diagnosed

with a rare form of Osteosarcoma, a children's bone cancer.

A regime of chemotherapy began in the new year of 2013 but

sadly Ethan lost his fight in May 2014. Ethan was a brave soldier

who fought his fight with dignity and grace and always thought

of others in the same situation.

Having spent so much time in hospital, Ethan saw first-hand the

devastating effects on the children suffering with cancer and the

financial burden on their families. Many families have to travel

long distances to Nottingham for treatment and the costs of

travel and overnight accommodation are a huge strain on their

finances and it is these people that Ethan wanted to help.

'Billy's House' is a house located close to the hospital where

families can stay while their children are having prolonged

treatment and a place that they can try to make a home from

home while they are there. This is especially useful for the

children in the family who need a more normal environment.

Spaces at Billy's House are limited and Ethan's ultimate goal was

to fund another house for use by the patients and families of

ward E39.

From his wish to help others, 'The Ethan Maull up yours to cancer

Foundation' was started. Many friends and family hold many

charity events to raise money to help build a place for children

with cancer in Ethan's name. Ethan's Aunty Dawny suggested we

name our new Japanese restaurant/sushi bar after him, keeping

his beautiful memory alive. If you would like to contribute in any

way, please ask your server how you can do this.
