Lieber Kurs,

Auch in der kommenden Woche beschäftigen wir uns mit Entwicklung in einer ungleichen Welt. In diesem Sinne

sollt ihr die Auswirkungen von demographischen (Bevölkerungs-) Veränderungen untersuchen.

Wie immer gilt: die Lösungen befinden sich weiter unten und Fragen gerne jederzeit an [email protected]

oder über schul.cloud.

Have fun!

Solutions for last time

Solutions: Case Study Indonesia

Task 1

Social problems: worse living conditions for many Indonesians, migration from rural areas to the

cities, growing group of the urban poor, hunger, poverty, rising criminality in the cities, population

density problems in the cities

Environmental problems: rising pressure on scarce agricultural resources (especially Java), increasing

space for farming was needed, large impact of slash-and-burn agriculture, soil degradation,

destruction of rainforests

Economic problems: supply shortfalls in rural areas.

Task 2

Indonesia's total population has been growing from 100.3 million people in 1965 to 257.6 million in

2015. Although this is a dramatic increase in the total numbers, the growth rate has been steadily

decreasing in the same period from 2.7 to 1.21 %. This is mainly due to a falling fertility rate.

Whereas in 1965 there were 5.6 children per woman, this number has dropped to 2.4 in 2015. It is

problematic that the agricultural area per capita is decreasing and the urban population is still

increasing. In 2015, more than half of the population lives in cities.

Task 3

Fewer people mean less pressure on the environment, the cities, and the economy. Hence, less

money would be needed to feed all Indonesians and to educate all Indonesian children. Better

education can then result in better (paying) jobs and widespread health and well-being. This in turn

leads to economic growth. At the same time, decreasing pressure on natural and agricultural

resources can lead to the preservation of natural ecosystems as well as security and conservation of

water, air, food, and energy.

Please – as always – add the information that is missing in your own solution!
