INTRODUCTIONTHE BASIC SENTENCE PATTERNS IN ENGLISHIn any language, words follow a definite order; otherwise meaning is lost. The word order is determined by structure natural to the language. Like other language, English has basic sentence patterns and the student is said to be proficient in English when she/he recognize and produce automatically the basic patterns of the language. English has relatively fixed word order. For example, word modifiers come before the words. They modify but phrase and clause modifiers come after the words they modify. Ex. valuable painting (word modifier) a painting of great value (phrase modifier) a painting which is very valuable (clause modifier) The basic arrangement of words in English is generally the ff. subject & verb or subject & verb & object. If this basic word order is not followed the result will be unintelligible. Notice the ff. examples regarding and order. 1. The cat scratched the man. (correct word order meaning clear) 2. The man scratched the man (correct word order meaning clear but different from number 1)

3. The scratched man the cat (incorrect word order) 4. Cat the man scratched the (no meaning)

TEXT INPUT1. The S-V Pattern The first basic word order in English is the S-V pattern on the subject & verb. This basic word order may be expanded by adding modifiers to the subject, to the verb or to both. Ex : a. The grass(S) grows (V) Expanded Form b. The green grass grows. c. The grass grows rapidly.

2. The S-V-O- Pattern The second basic pattern in English is the subject & verb & direct object or S-V-O pattern. This pattern may be expanding by adding modifiers to the subject, to the direct object and/on to the verb. In the S-V-O pattern, the direct object follows the verbs. Modifiers of the verb come after the direct object. Ex. a. The girl reads a book. Expanded Form b. The pretty little girls read a book.

c. The girl reads a long, interesting book. d. The girl reads a book in a hurry.

3. The S-LV-C Pattern The third basic of the English sentence is the subject & the linking verb & adjective compliment. The basic pattern may be expanded by adding modifiers to the subject or to the compliment.

Ex.

a. Her bracelet is expensive. b. Mina is a student. Expanded Form c. Her attractive, antique bracelet is expensive. d. Mina is a hardworking student.

4. S-V-IO-O Pattern Another basic word order in English is the subject & verb & indirect object & direct object or the S-V-IO-O pattern. This pattern like the others may be expanded by adding modifiers to the subject, to the direct object or to both. Ex. a. My aunt gave me a watch. b. My uncle asked me a question. Expanded Form c. My kind, thoughtful aunt gave me a watch. d. My old uncle asked me a very difficult question.
