SHORT SERVICE COMMISSION

• Option of joining the services and serving as a Commissioned Officer for 10 years.

• At the end of this period you have two options. Either elect for a Permanent Commission or opt out.

• Those not selected for Permanent Commission have the option of a 4 years extension. They can resign at any time during this period.

SERVICE SELECTION BOARD - SSB INTERVIEW PROCEDURE

• 5 Day Programme • Candidates apply to advertisements on newspapers/websites

etc depending on vacancies.• The Candidates are called through “Call Letters” to appear in

5 days Tests at SSB (Allahabad/Bhopal/Bangalore/Mysore/Varanasi/Dehradun).

SSB INTERVIEW

• The Interview is intended to judge the mental calibre, attitude and outlook of the candidate along with leadership qualities and character traits.

• Assessment of not merely of Academic proficiency and intellectual qualities but also of social traits and interest in current events. Some of the qualities to be judged can be listed as:– Mental alertness – Critical powers of assimilation – Balance of judgment – Clear and logical exposition – Variety and depth of interests – Ability for social cohesion and leadership – Intellectual and moral integrity.

Medical Examination

THE AIM OF THE SSB INTERVIEWS

• Leadership Qualities: The board takes note of the many qualities, when it tries to assess the leadership ability of the candidate, as the same have been generally accepted as leadership attributes.

INTELLECTUAL ATTAINMENTS

• The extent of knowledge in different subjects. • What will you do if you were not selected at this interview? • General Knowledge - Current Affairs, Everyday Science,

Burning Topics, Sports, Newspaper headlines, etc. Grasp - How quickly the candidate understands the question or the subject?

POWER OF EXPRESSION

• Fluency• Forceful - Lively, enthusiastic and

arresting. • Logic in argument - Rational,

clearheaded, analytical, systematic, proceeding step buy step and no contradictions.

• Practical approach - Realistic and sensible.

• Convincing Ability - Speaking with sincerity and faith.

SCREENING TEST (FIRST DAY)

• Filling of “Personal Information Questionnaire” (PIQ)• Verbal and Non-Verbal Tests. • Picture Story Writing followed by Discussion of the Stories.• Candidates clearing screening stay back for the next 4 days.

PSYCHOLOGICAL TEST (SECOND DAY)

• These tests are in four parts as under:– Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) - Commonly known as

Picture Story writing. – Word Association Test (WAT) – Situation Reaction Test (SRT) – Self Description Test (SD)

GROUP TESTING OFFICERS (GTO) TEST (THIRD AND FOURTH DAY)

• The following tests are conducted in this category:– Group discussion – Group Planning Exercise– Progressive Group Tasks – Half Group Tasks – Individual Obstacles – Group Obstacles Race – Command Task – Lecture – Final Group Task

INTERVIEW & BOARD MEETING

• Interview is held during the 2-4th day by IO.• Board Meeting(Fifth day) • The candidates are required to appear before the

complete Board of Examiners comprising of President, Dy President, all the psychologists, all the GTO’s and Technical Officer.

• Selected candidates are required to stay back for their medical examination

• Air Force candidates who had applied for ‘Pilot Entry’ have to first appear in ‘Pilot Aptitude Battery Test (PABT)’. Those who are rejected in P.A.B.T cannot re-appear in this test subsequently.

• Eligible candidates are called for Preliminary Interview Boards held at respective TA Group Headquarters (Pune, Kolkata, Chandigarh, Lucknow).

• Selected candidates go through the SSB Interview, Medical Board prior to commission.
