HumanVision Howpeopleseeandarepsychologicallyimpactedbylightinghasbeenasubjectofmuchstudyanddiscussionforyears.Describinglightas"lumenoutput"andmeasuringitas"footcandles"onaworkplanehavebeenthetraditionalwaysofdescribinganddefininghowmuchlightisrequiredtoperformavarietyoftasks.However,thatisbeingre-examinedbasedonresultsofstudiesonvisualperformanceandthepsychologicalimpactsoflighting.Additionally,the"colorrenderingindex"(CRI)andcorrelatedcolortemperature(CT)describethequalityofthelight(relatingtohowtruecolorsappearcomparedtounderanoonnorthskyonaclearday).Aslightingtechnologyevolvesintovarioustypesandcolors,simplymeasuringthelumensprovesnottobefullyadequateinpredictinghowwellpeoplecansee.Anexcellentexampleisthelow-sodiumlampwhichproducesmanylumens,butonlytwocolors(yellowandgray);theabilitytomakeoutdetails—beyondshapesofobjects—islostunderthislightsource.Differentlightsourcesproducelightindifferentspectralrangesandthereisawidevarietyofspectraloutputavailableinfluorescentlamps. Visionitselfisaffectedbymanyfactors,fromlightintensity,distribution,color,andcontrast,aswellasreflections,glare,airquality,motionofsubjectsandviewers,andmore.Oureyesusedifferentpartstoseeinbrightlightandlowlightconditions.Theeyecontainsconesandrodswhichwerethoughttoworkinoppositeconditions.Conesprovidecolorvisionandfinedetail(photopic)inbrightlightandrodstakeoverindimlight(scotopic).Inbrightlightourpupilscontractallowingmoredetailtobeperceived,whiledepthoffieldandperceivedbrightnessalsoincrease.Inlowlightoureyesdilatetoallowmorelightin.

Measuring“True”LightLevels Lightmetersandrecommendedlightlevelsfortaskshavetraditionallybeencalibratedfordaytimeviewing,andgeneralinteriorlighting,basedonthephotopicresponse.However,studiesareindicatingthatthescotopicvisionismoreinvolvedininteriorlightingthanthought,andaffectspupilsize.Atrecentconferences,somepresentersencourageddesignerstospecifythephotopic/scotopic(P/S)ratiooflampswhenselectingtheminordertogetbetterdesign,efficiency,andbettervisionforoccupants.SamBerman—formerlywiththeLightingSystemsResearchGroupatLawrenceBerkeleyLaboratoryandamajorsupporteroftheimportanceoftheP/Sratioinlightingselection—developedaconversionfactorthatappliestheP/Sratiotolumenoutputofvariouslightsources,andthenexpressestheeffectivelumenstheeyewillperceiveforvisionbasedonthesizeofthepupilandtheeffectonvision(seeTable1below).Somelamps,likelow-pressuresodium,losemostoftheiroutputusingthis

method,whileotherslikehigh-qualityfluorescentlampsgainsubstantially.

InductionlampshaveaCRIof80andacolortemperatureof5000K(seetablebelow).Berman’stablesuggeststhat,whiletheLVDlamphasratedlumensof80perwatt,thepupil(effective)lumensareactually128perwatt.Ifcontrastanddistributionarecontrolled,thissuggeststhatfewerwattsareneededtoprovidegoodvisionthanratedlumenoutputwouldsuggest,meaningenergysavingswillresult.

Conversionfactorsforlumenstopupillumenscorrectionfactorsappliedtoconventionalvaluesoflumensperwattyieldavalueforpupillumensperwatt,whichisameasureofhoweffectivelytheeyeseesthelightthatisemitted.Thepupilismorereceptivetolightattheblueendofthespectrum.
