A holiday region of unsurpassed variety and charm awaits you on the North Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein between the Danish border and the Elbe. Art and culture, sport-ing events and fun, the countryside and the sea: Rarely you will find experiences and relaxation so close to each other.

North Friesland County farthest north in Germany bids you a warm welcome. Here you will find peaceful villages and beautiful thatched houses, and the green dykes tempt with comfortable wicker beach chairs where you can enjoy the fantastic view. In the main land historical towns such as Husum, Friedrichstadt and Tönning offer cosy shopping tours and museum visits. St. Peter-Ording is famous for its houses on stilts. It is easy to take the ferry to the North Frisian islands Sylt, Amrum, Föhr and Pellworm. And the halligen

are a unique experience to be found nowhere else in the whole world  – you simply have to explore this sight!

Dithmarschen County is surrounded by water, and it is only accessible by bridges or by ferry across the Kiel-Canal. The beautiful area is char-acterized by idyllic river landscapes, vast green marshlands and the hilly geest landscape. The town Heide with its historical market square and the many shopping possibilities is a popu-lar spot for excursions. You can visit more than 300 nature and culture monuments, and there is also plenty to experience for the children. In the North Sea spa resorts Büsum and Friedrichskoog you will find all that your heart can desire from a holiday destination.

You can make some surprising discoveries when going on a cosy excursion in the countryside: the farms sell their own products in farm shops, right from home-made liqueur to lamb specialities, goat cheeses, sausages, and sheepskins. Small art galleries and original farm cafés sell beautiful art ware such as ceramics, jewellery and hand-woven materials. Supermarkets, DIY stores, and the well-known discount stores are to be found practically everywhere, often on the outskirts of the towns.

Some islands and towns have developed into regular shopping paradises. The island Sylt leaves little to be desired. In Westerland, Friedrich-straße lures with shops of every price class. Designer articles, brand-name clothes, house-hold articles, leisure-time goods and souvenirs

– in the pedestrian street you will simply find all that you could wish for. There are also lots of possibilities when you get hungry: right from ice-cream shops to good fish snack bars and res-taurants of a high quality.

The shopping possibilities in the classy Kampen are high-priced. Here you will find only the very finest articles: precious jewellery, clothes from famous fashion designers, antiques and works of art. Fastidious customers will certainly not be disappointed when shopping in the beautiful Frisian village Keitum. Right behind the beach promenade in the historical seaside resort of Wyk on the island Föhr you can also get a cosy shopping experience when browsing in the small shops with maritime arts and crafts or taking a stroll in the side streets with the many roses and the historical Frisian houses.

In the main land the harbour town Husum has developed into a lively shopping metropolis. Old gabled houses with beautiful facades lie side by side in the narrow streets and cobbled alleys. Along the inner harbour which stretches right into the centre of the town, cafés and restaurants invite the visitors to a well-deserved break. The large department stores and fashion houses are situated right at the market square, and in the narrow alleys of the old town you will find beauti-ful small boutiques. A multitude of maritime souvenir shops are situated at the inner harbour. Beautifully furnished shops and art galleries draw the visitors to the new part of the town and to the small shops in Hohle Gasse and Wasser-reihe where the poet Theodor Storm once lived

– and perhaps also did his shopping.

In Dithmarschen the town Heide with its many shopping possibilities and the coastal town of Büsum are popular places for excursions. Natu-rally the North Sea spa of Büsum is famous for its “Büsum shrimps”, but the guests of the town can also enjoy a large number of family-friendly leisure-time activities and a maritime atmos-phere. From Büsum you can go on an excursion by boat to the island Helgoland, Germany’s only off-shore island. The island not only boasts scenery of great natural beauty, but at the same time it is also a genuine shopping paradise: It is the only place in Germany where it is possible to buy duty and tax-free.

Her finder man kun

Go shopping without the usual throng, stress, and rush and bustle – along the North Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein

shopping is a relaxed experience.

Shopping experiences

CultureCulture

Art and culture The art and culture offers of

Schleswig-Holstein are just as varied and dynamic as the

North Sea coast itself.

A large number of museums and culture institu-tions await the visitors. Many exhibitions inform about the North Sea and its nature characteris-tics or give an insight into the history of North Frisia and Dithmarschen.

There is even a North Frisian museum which is world-famous: The Nolde Foundation Seebüll in Neukirchen near the Danish border. The exhibi-tions which change each year show the works of the Expressionist painter Emil Nolde. The present museum building was built in “Bauhaus style” according to the artist’s own drawings and it was originally his home. The beautiful country gar-den is an oasis of peace and colourful splendour and it grows and blossoms to this very day as in Nolde’s lifetime.

The central museum of North Frisian County is the NordseeMuseum in Husum. It is situated in the Ludwig-Nissen-Haus and shows the full spectrum of culture and nature on the North Sea coast in all its facets. In Schiffahrtsmuseum Nordfriesland you will get to know all about ship-building and the shipping and fishing history of North Frisia. If you book in good time, it is also possible to go on a tour in Danish or English with a knowledgeable guide through the enchanting old part of Husum.

The art museum “Kunst der Westküste” on the island of Föhr has the sea and the coast as its overall theme, and it is housed in a group of buildings where it is also possible to visit the res-taurant “Grethjens Gasthof”.

In Büsum there is a totally unusual attraction: the storm surge world “Blanker Hans”. Here you can travel in a rescue capsule through the storm surge and learn in a fascinating way all about the cause and effect of the natural forces. In an exhibition you can get more information about weather phe-nomena, climate changes, the tidal water and the history of the storm surges and coast protection. The museum “Erlebniszentrum Naturgewalten” is situated in List at the northern tip of the island Sylt and it tells about the special weather conditions, the life in the Wadden Sea and the dunes, coast protection and renewable energy. The Stone Age Park Steinzeitpark Dithmarschen is situated in Albersdorf far away from the sea. The Archaeologi-cal Ecological Centre (AÖZA) where the Stone Age comes alive is an exciting and popular place for an excursion for the whole family.

Page 6: En-DK-2014 Nordsee_north Sea Brochure

GastronomyGastronomy

Naturally the most delicious ingredients come from this region. A multitude of specialities from the sea such as eel, plaice and shrimps are served freshly caught and cooked in end-less variations. A delicacy at the coast is the roll

“Krabben brötchen” – with lots of delicious North Sea shrimps. The “Sylter Royal” is an oyster of an unrivalled quality which is harvested in Sylt, in Germany’s only oyster farm, and which titillates gourmet palates all over Europe. In Germany’s only off-shore island, Helgoland, “Knieper”, which is the claws of the edible crab, is a popular speciality. A culinary highpoint is the local lamb meat from the North Sea coast of North Frisia: succulent, tender and with an unforgettable fla-vour – truly a delicacy. The autumn is the cabbage season in Dithmarschen: the chefs of the local restaurants fetch the cabbage fresh from the field

and they work their magic by producing delicious meals, which are cooked in many sophisticated variations. This should be completed by the local Dithmarscher Pilsener, a bitter beer from a pri-vate micro brewery in Marne.

And for dessert? Friesian cake with home-made plum puree and cream  – absolutely delicious! Especially in the cold season the Pharisee is a popular choice. This delicious coffee drink with a high alcohol percentage topped with cream was invented on the island of Nordstrand more than 130 years ago. If you prefer cocoa to coffee but do not wish to do without the warming rum, you should order a “Tote Tante”. All year round and not only at Easter many people also order an “Eiergrog”, a hot drink in which the egg yolk is mixed with sugar and rum.

Culinary delights Good food and drinks – this is typical for

the North Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein. Wherever you go, you can enjoy regional

specialities and exquisite meals in rustic farm shop cafés as well as cosy country inns and multi-star gourmet restaurants

– usually in an unforgettable atmosphere and often with a view over the North Sea

or the Wadden Sea.

12 13

Page 8: En-DK-2014 Nordsee_north Sea Brochure

Events

Experiences all year round

Der sker noget hele året

The season starts already in February. With the traditional “Biikebrennen” (a folk festival with bonfires) the North Frisians in the mainland and in the islands bid farewell to the winter. The large bonfires are said to drive away the spirits of the winter and afterwards people gather to have a delicious meal with kale. The biggest historical event in North Germany takes place every two years in Heide. “Heider Markfrieden” offers medi-aeval market activities, old handicrafts, stall hold-ers, street performers, and musicians. The largest

town event at the North Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein is the harbour festival Husum Hafent-age which offers genuine maritime atmosphere. Around the inner harbour there is live music on various stages, and you should not miss the large tug-of-war competition. For those who prefer a somewhat quieter atmosphere, the festival Frie-drichstädter Festtagen would be the obvious choice – with lots of stalls, live music and not the least the Lampioncorso, a large lantern parade of ships along the idyllic canals.

During the North Frisian Lamb Festival, the “woollen” dyke dwellers are the main topic of the event  – offering a varied programme and

well-tasting lamb specialities. Another culi-nary highlight takes place in Europe’s largest enclosed cabbage area: The cabbage days in Dithmarschen. The whole of Dithmarschen is buzzing with excitement when the harvest is cel-ebrated with delicious cabbage dishes. During the shrimp season in Husum, everything natu-rally revolves around the shrimp cutters – and the same goes for the cutter regatta in Büsum and Friedrichs koog. The enthusiasm goes wild when the cutters race in the North Sea and along the harbour quays the visitors can enjoy the sight of the beauti fully decorated cutters.

The Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival is one of the very large international events. In the manors, churches and barns it is possible to experience first-class concerts and artistic virtuosi . The hottest wishes of jazz lovers are fulfilled when the festival “Jazz goes Föhr” is taking place. In August the event “Kunstgriff” is held with 30  exhibitions in the whole of Dithmarschen during which some 200 artists show their works.

Allerede i februar starter sæsonen for begiven-heder.

Along the North Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein great importance is attached to art and culture, traditions and customs. Some 300 events with big and small attractions are taking place in the whole of the area, and all of them are worth-while a visit.

Cycling – Nordic Walking – kite buggySports

It almost goes without saying that the North Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein is a mecca for water sports enthusiasts as St. Peter-Ording and the island Sylt are among Germany’s best wind and kite surfing areas. Thus it should not come as a surprise that the best wind surfers in the world meet in Westerland on Sylt in September for the Surf World Cup. In the large party tent on the Westerländer Promenade there will be plenty going on.

However, there is also a lot to experience on land. The best international kite surfers demon-strate their abilities along the 12 km long beach in St. Peter-Ording. Breathtaking leaps, extra-ordinary tricks and daredevil manoeuvres fas-cinate thousands of visitors – and they can also enjoy the fine party programme. Tough duels and high-class technical sophistications are the main ingredients when St. Peter-Ording provides

the sand for the official Beach Volleyball Masters. Since 1997 the best German beach volleyball play-ers have fascinated the spectators in this excep-tionally beautiful setting. A beach classic which guarantees sportsmanship, fun and excitement.

Runner enthusiasts can take up the sporting challenges when the Sylt run is held – likewise in a beautiful countryside setting. In March the 33-km-long race leads from the southernmost town of Sylt, Hörnum, across the dunes and heaths of the island to List. And if you feel like participating in one more run, you can do so in the Helgoland Marathon, which leads around the island four times.

“Gegen den Wind Triathlon” in St. Peter-Ording is enjoyed by everybody who game for a race swim in the North Sea besides a beautiful run through the North German landscape.

The North Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein does not only offer optimal possibilities for all kinds of sporting activities, it is also the

place where first-class sporting events are held each year.

First-class sporting events

Active nature experiences

Cycling along the North Sea implies a wide horizon, the Wadden Sea, halligen, haubargs and rich march landscapes in the World Heritage Site the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea. There is a widely dispersed and excellently signposted network of bicycle paths which, including the North Sea Cycle Route, the Border Route and the North-Ostsee Canal Route.

However, it is also a good idea to get acquainted with the splendour of the countryside on foot.

The popular Nordic Walking Parks are situated in Sylt, in the area around Niebüll, in St. Peter-Ording and in Dithmarschen. Golfers can choose between 12 golf courses at the North Sea of which as many as 4 on the island of Sylt. Especially the Poloclub on Sylt is known far beyond the borders of the region. In St. Peter-Ording there are ideal conditions for beach sailors and kite buggy driv-ers along the some 12 km-long and 3 km-wide beach where the wind conditions usually produce a really good speed.

The North Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein has a lot to offer for everybody on two wheels – both when it comes to sporting bicycle holidays, cosy day trips, and small tours.

Cykling – Nordic Walking – kite buggy

Sportsbegivenheder i særklasse

Enjoy magnificent

scenery

Moreover, the brant geese, which are small dark-coloured geese with a white ring around the neck, are resting in the biosphere of the halligen area when they are on their way from their winter quarters to their breeding areas in the north.

You can also get an intense nature experience when participating in a guided Wadden Sea tour. Thanks to the guides you will get very wiser on the numerous birds and other big and small creatures which live in the Wadden Sea. If you wish to know more about the area, you can participate in the tours which are regularly arranged to the islands, the halligen and the sand hills.

You also have the possibility of getting more information about the Wadden Sea National Park in Multimar Wattforum where there are tanks and theme exhibitions about the whales, the wilderness and the science in the Wadden Sea.

It is possible to watch the seals on close range on the tours arranged by various shipping companies, and on the little island of “Düne” which is situated right in front of Helgoland. If you prefer to be on firm ground, you can admire the seals in Westküstenpark in St. Peter-Ording or in the seal station in Friedrichskoog.

The nature phenomenon which many Danes know under the name of “Sort

Sol” can also be experienced south of the border on the North Sea coast of

Schleswig-Holstein. It is called so because numerous starlings darken the

sun especially in Beltringharder Koog, in Kattinger Watt and in Speicherkoog

when settling down for the night.
