TECKWAH CHATROOM

LIFESTYLE FEATURELet’s Celebrate Spring!

First, let us extend a warm welcome to Profoto Group (“Profoto®”) – the newest subsidiary of Teckwah Group. In April, the Group had successfully acquired majority stake in Profoto® - a specialist in large format printing, design and build of road shows, events and exhibitions, as well as, installation of retail window displays. To learn more about Profoto®, please refer to page 4.

Teckwah’s initial journey into Digital Transformation (“DT”) started back in 2016 where digital efforts implemented were specific to the business function. Today, we have established a structured methodology with fundamental know-how to execute a company-wide DT roadmap. To enable a digitally-aware and digitally-ready workforce in Teckwah, our longstanding partner, SIMTech, was invited to conduct a sharing on understanding digital transformation for all Teckwahers in May. It was the first of a planned training series to cultivate a digital culture and to embrace a digital mindset.

The 2019 Mass Communication Sessions in April was an opportune platform for Top Management to create dialogue and receive feedback from staff. In his address to staff of Teckwah Singapore, Chairman and Managing Director, Mr Thomas Chua, communicated key insights on the impact of Industry 4.0 and Teckwah’s DT journey. Mr Chua encouraged everyone to embrace DT with a positive attitude and mindset, and to cultivate a digital culture. He also urged all Teckwahers to continue upholding our core values as they are the foundation to drive the transformation in Teckwah.

In April, Chairman and Managing Director, Mr Thomas Chua, addressed Teckwahers across Singapore in 6 separate sessions held at both Pixel Red and the offsite premises. This year’s theme centered upon Digital Transformation (“DT”). Citing reasons for the need to embark onto Industry 4.0 and the Government’s push towards Singapore becoming a “Smart Nation”, Mr Chua gave a snapshot of Teckwah’s ongoing digitalisation efforts which have started since 2016. This encompassed investing in the latest equipment and automation for Packaging Printing; enabling supply chain visibility via new technologies for Logistics; and more recently, embarking on the DTI™ Programme to digitally transform the way we operate in gearing towards Industry 4.0.

Mr Chua emphasised the need to develop digital ready Teckwahers. He urged all staff to embrace digital transformation and to participate actively in the journey. Specially designed training programmes will be introduced throughout the year to equip and upskill staff – enabling our workforce for a smart factory / warehouse. Mr Chua also

took the opportunity to receive feedback from Teckwahers on the Group’s newly acquired subsidiary, Profoto Digital Services Pte Ltd. He explained that while the organisation actively seeks to transform internally, it will also seize the right external opportunities to grow inorganically, in tandem with its vision.

With the shift towards a digital mindset and culture, Mr Chua reminded what must remain are our core values – Teamwork; Initiative; Commitment; Continuous Improvement, reiterating that an organisation’s ability to innovate, improve and learn ties directly to its core values. To conclude the session, Mr Chua briefly spoke about Teckwah’s application for the Innovation Excellence Award. He added that as the organisation undergoes DT, the Business Excellence Framework will provide rigour and structure in ensuring that we do not compromise on good management practices and that we will continue to excel and drive sustainable performance and growth.

When Teckwah successfully signed the agreement for the proposed acquisition of majority stake in Profoto Group [“Profoto®”] on 30 March, Management wasted no time in organising a warm welcome in Singapore for staff of the new subsidiary. In tandem with the 2019 Mass Communication Sessions, a session was held at Profoto Singapore’s premises on 26 April. Colleagues at Profoto® were taken on a journey into Teckwah’s 50-year history and Chairman and Managing Director, Mr Thomas Chua, explained how Profoto® would be an exciting new chapter as both companies journey towards the next 50 years.

Illustrating the Group’s vision, Mr Chua emphasised how the acquisition was a well thought out decision by the Management of Teckwah and Profoto®. The capabilities, service offerings and global clientele of Profoto® seamlessly integrated with Teckwah’s strive to be the “preferred partner of global companies, creating and delivering the best-in-class value chain solutions worldwide”. Both companies also shared common core values of Teamwork and Initiative. The presentation ended with Mr Chua’s rendition of our company song, pausing to explain the meaning behind each lyric. The serenade drew a roaring applause from the audience who exuded great energy throughout the hour-long session.

Following the Mass Communication session, a half-day sharing event was organised and held between the Business Development teams of Teckwah and Profoto® at Pixel Red on 21 June. Key objectives of the session were not only for colleagues to meet and interact, but more importantly, to understand the capabilities and differentiated offerings of the business segments and to discuss and brainstorm on future synergies. The following morning of 22 June, a few Teckwahers joined the Profoto® team at their beach cleanup event at East Coast Park Beach.

What a positive start to this new chapter of Teckwah and Profoto® - looking forward to feature more sharing and interactive events on CaiXun!

the first printing company to be accredited the Singapore Quality Class status. We were later conferred the prestigious Singapore Quality Award (“SQA”) in 2006, and again in 2011

- testament to our enduring strive for excellence. Throughout our journey, the principles of BE have been intrinsically woven into business practices and management processes.

“Striving for excellence / We work together to scale greater heights” - the relevance of our company song perpetuates till this day. Composed back in 1978, “Teckwah Forging Forward” fully embodies the spirit of excelling to be the “best-in-class”. Let us work towards a BE hat trick in 2020. Onward, Teckwah!

Teckwah is going for its 3rd Business Excellence (“BE”) Award application in 2020 - this time, the Innovation Excellence Award. Embarking on the year-long process, an internal kickoff session was held on 3 May, followed by a BE coaching session on 15 May, facilitated by Ms Bina Damodaran, Principal Assessor at Enterprise Singapore. Both sessions involved the newly formed Committee, where members comprise Top and Senior Management, as well as, key managers and executives. The main agenda was to introduce the BE framework and the application process and report requisites to colleagues new to BE. For longer-serving colleagues who had undergone either one or both SQA application processes, it was a refresher on BE.

Since its inception, Teckwah had consciously pursued excellence within its processes, products and management of business activities. It was in the 1990s when government agency, Enterprise Singapore (previously SPRING Singapore), launched the BE initiative that Teckwah formally embarked on a journey towards business excellence. In 1997, we were

WE HAVE MOVED: RELOCATIONS IN SINGAPORE AND THAILAND

TECKWAH LOGISTICS RELOCATES OFFSITE OPERATIONS TO TANJONG PENJURU

With effect from June 2019, 52 Tanjong Penjuru is Teckwah Logistics’ latest offsite premises in Singapore. Previously occupying the space at 49 Pandan Road, the decision to relocate came when the lease was due for renewal and the rental rates offered were unfavourable; moreover, Management was looking for a scalable warehouse as the existing space at 49 Pandan Road did not allow for further expansion.

To ensure it was business-as-usual for operations, the relocation was performed in phases. Close coordination was vital as the existing racking system was to be re-used at the new premises. Dismantling and installation had to be well-facilitated to minimise disruption to daily operations. Concurrently, ICT provided onsite support to enable 100% connectivity at the new location. As of 1st week of June, all projects are in full operational status. An appreciation lunch was also held at the new location to thank staff for displaying great teamwork and communication. Well done!

TECKWAH VALUE CHAIN THAILAND HAS A NEW ADDRESS

Teckwah Value Chain (Thailand) Co., Ltd [“TVCTH”] relocated its operations on 1 May. It was a much-needed move to optimise staff allocation and achieve operation efficiency by consolidating 2 separate warehouse operations into 1 bigger facility in the Bangna District of Bangkok. In addition, the new space is able to house more logistics projects in the future. Congratulations on the move!

THE ERP TEAMA DAY IN THE LIFE OF…

The ICT department in Teckwah works diligently behind the scenes to make sure all systems, infrastructure and technologies work in well-oiled orchestration. In the 2nd instalment of this 4-part series, CaiXun learns more about the brains behind the Enterprise Resource Planning (“ERP”) team. Key contributors in enabling the Packaging Printing Operations, read on to find out more about working life as a member of the team.

What is the main role of the ERP team?

We work closely with colleagues from the various departments (i.e. Program, Purchasing, Warehouse, Production, QA and Finance) to deliver optimised solutions for the Packaging Printing business. In meeting our department goals, we support and assist the teams in these key areas: (i) Enhancement of our ERP system, namely SAP (ii) Automation and improvement of workflow processes (under the DTI™ roadmap) (iii) Supporting productivity initiatives involving IT enhancement

Speaking of supporting Operations, what projects are the team currently working on?

Since migrating from our legacy system to SAP in 2015, the team has been working tirelessly to streamline and refine the workflows and processes on SAP. Besides fulfilling the business requirements from our external customers, the team implements system enhancements requested from internal customers as well. These enhancement projects were either identified through Project Codify (a special project to codify all SAP process flows and identify areas for improvement) or via the DTI™ roadmap.

Customer related projects that the team is working on include implementing an Electronic Invoicing (“eInvoicing”)

Platform for one our customer’s invoice submission, as well as, implementing a QR code system (with the code printed on the packaging sleeve) for a customer to track their products upon shipment. Internal department projects, to name a few, include an SAP Integration project for Finance department to enable seamless payment processing with an established local bank, digitising the Accounts Payable Process via SAP to eliminate physical verifications and approvals, and a collaborative Proof-of-Concept project with ICT, Production and SIMTech to improve Overall Equipment and Effectiveness (“OEE”) of selected equipment at the production shopfloor.

What about key projects in the pipeline?

In tandem with Digital Transformation, the team will be assessing and evaluating various Repeated Process Automation (“RPA”) technologies to streamline previously repetitive processes performed on SAP to achieve improve productivity. Our pipeline also includes the planned connectivity of all external interfaces with SAP like ESKO Graphics platform and production shopfloor equipment, as well as, optimising the usage of standard SAP functions.

What else would the team like to share with fellow Teckwahers?

The ERP team firmly believes in TICC (Teamwork, Initiative, Commitment, and Continuous Improvement) and we endeavour to deliver the best as a team, for both internal users and external customers.

A MEANINGFUL IFTAR BY TPPI

Iftar is the Arabic word for ‘break a fast’ and is essentially the meal eaten by Muslims after sunset during Ramadan. On 24 May, a group of Muslim staff from TPPI organised a meaningful Iftar with children of a local orphanage. Before breaking fast, the team passed a donation to the orphanage in hopes that the children could enjoy the Hari Raya festivities. The event comprised of a simple arrangement at TPPI’s premises. Albeit the humble setup, the team managed to create an ambience of togetherness. Wishing the Muslim community in Teckwah, a Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

RESULTS OF THE NATIONAL STEPS CHALLENGE:

Congratulations to our top 10 Step Challengers in Teckwah!

Season 4

In partnership with Ren Ci Hospital, Staff Wellbeing Committee organised a lunch time health talk on 17 May for Teckwahers. The session centred on Ergonomics and targeted deskbound workers and those leading a sedentary lifestyle. Invited speakers of Ren Ci Hospital shared examples of good and bad sitting postures, as well as, how to prevent the negative effects of prolonged use of the computer. Participants were reminded to take short breaks in-between long periods of computer usage and to always maintain a good sitting posture. Simple stretching exercises – that could be done at our desk or at home - were also demonstrated during the session. The session concluded with a healthy lunch arranged by the Committee.

“I have picked up useful stretching exercises from the session. The exercises can be done during free time to improve overall wellbeing. Having a better understanding of my posture at work, I will be more mindful to cultivate a good posture habit.”

Betty Wong,

Executive Secretary

“I have learnt how ergonomics-related issues at the workplace affects our health. The Ren Ci speakers also showed us how to improve office ergonomics - for example, when seated at our work desk, feet should be flat on the floor or supported by a footrest to reduce pressure on our thighs. It is a good experience joining this health talk.”

For 8 evenings starting May, Teckwahers gathered at Pixel Red’s Level 1 Lobby A area for a fun and energising Zumba workout. Designed for all ages and levels of fitness, Zumba’s benefits go beyond burning calories; working out with colleagues is a great way to bond and have fun. The programme was organised and subsidised by Staff Wellbeing Committee and participating Teckwahers were only required to pay a nominal fee.

ZUMBAFOR A FUN AND ENERGISING WORKOUT!

“It is fun and a healthy way to de-stress by turning our attention away from the daily work. It is not just for weight loss but a chance to socialise with colleagues, and why not when we can enjoy it at the office after office hours at a subsidised rate!”

Htay Htay Khaing,

Analyst Programmer

On 17 May, Staff Wellbeing Committee distributed healthy drinks to all Teckwahers in Singapore as a gesture of appreciation. Representatives from each department collected the drinks in their designated timeslots at Pixel Red’s multi-purpose hall. Staff were able to select from an array of brews, which included usual favourites like lou han guo, honey aloe vera and chrysanthemum ginseng.

“What I like about Zumba is that it combines exercise with dance. It is a great stress-relieving workout to improve my flexibility and cardio fitness. I enjoyed working out with my fellow colleagues and hope that weekly Zumba classes will continue in Teckwah.”

2019 JOINTAC TEAMBUILDINGhad to compose a poem to capture the natural beauty around. Everyone participated actively. After intense competition, the top 3 winning groups were selected, and the prizes were awarded by General Manager, Mr Kevin Feng. On the final day, the team arrived at the Jiangnan Great Wall – an ancient site that predates 1,600 years ago. It was indeed stress-relieving as everyone admired the scenery and enjoyed the peace. The 2-day event not only enhanced team cohesiveness but also boosted staff’s morale.

Shanghai Jointac organised its outdoor teambuilding event on 13 and 14 April. After a 6-hour drive on 12 April, the team arrived late into the night in Taizhou, Zhejiang, and proceeded to the Yandang Mountains in Wenzhou City – the teambuilding location, early next morning. The team visited the two scenic spots - Lingfeng and Lingyan, and watched the “Lingyan Feidu Performance”, an exhilarating, high-altitude display between the peaks of Tianzhu and Zhanqi cliffs, which measure 200 meters high.

A photography and video competition ensued with participants organised into smaller groups; each group also

During the Mass Communication sessions in April, Chairman and Managing Director, Mr Thomas Chua, highlighted that staff could look forward to specially designed training programmes to equip them with essential know-how on Digital Transformation (“DT”). Kicking-off the training series was the sharing of “Understanding Digital Transformation in Teckwah” by SIMTech as part of the DTI™ programme in May. The sharing was to ready staff on adopting a digital mindset and how organisation culture will evolve as Teckwah traverses along the DT journey. It was imperative for Teckwahers to understand what DT means and entails; and how every Teckwaher can be a part of the journey. Using our core values as foundation, the speakers touched on cultivating desired behaviours that foster positive communication and teamwork as we embark on DT.

UNDERSTANDING DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION IN TECKWAH

“The training provided in-depth knowledge on Digital Transformation and how it could be linked to our core values. It reinforces and prompts us to find new purpose and direction. Change is inevitable. In embracing change, we can take baby steps and be curious and ask questions constantly; more importantly, we should take a leap of faith!”

In line with one of TVC’s Digital Transformation (“DT”) efforts in enabling shopfloor connectivity, an Overall Equipment Effectiveness (“OEE”) training programme was organised in Q2 for relevant staff over a series of sessions comprising theory (Phase 1) and data analysis (Phase 2). Teckwah’s longstanding partner, SIMTech, had been appointed to facilitate the training. The key focus of the training is to (i) align the understanding of OEE calculations across the Packaging Printing subsidiaries (i.e. TVC, TPPI, TPSSB); and (ii) evaluate SIMTech’s in-house developed OEE system for possible deployment within TVC’s shopfloor. By the end of the training the team hopes to identify at least one key improvement project for each shopfloor process and to have a final evaluation on the suitability of the OEE system.

Separately, one of the participants from TVC, Production Manager, Mr Reynard Cheong, conducted an internal sharing session on OEE with the team at Teckwah Malacca. The key intention was to share the know-how learnt from the SIMTech OEE programme to align the understanding of OEE across our Packaging Printing facilities. Hear about what our colleagues from both Singapore and Malacca had to say about their learnings:

OEE TRAINING & INTERNAL SHARING WITH THE MALACCA TEAM

“It is important for all to understand about machine efficiency. I think OEE is a good system to capture information such as quantity rejects per machine. Moving forward, QA will capture and provide as much information as possible to enable more accurate OEE data.”

INNOVATION & IDEATION 2019Spinovator™ Refresher Training in Singapore

In Q2, an in-house refresher session on the Spinovator™ methodology was organised for Teckwahers participating in the 2nd edition of Innovation & Ideation (“I&I”). The Spinovator™ methodology is a practical and structured tool for participants to brainstorm and develop their initiatives leading up to the big day – I&I 2019. The in-house facilitator also shared on the judging criteria for this year and examples from I&I 2018 on how teams could showcase their projects.

Spinovator™ Training at TPPI

TPPI was one of the overseas subsidiaries invited to participate in the 2nd edition of I&I. To equip and ready participants on I&I, a Spinovator™ methodology training was organised for Heads of Departments at TPPI on 7 May. Human Capital Director, Ms Joyce Chan, facilitated the sharing session. Learn more about TPPI’s initiative in this issue’s article feature, “Updates on I&I 2019”!

“The in-house training helped to refresh our understanding of the Spinovator™ toolkit that we can use to brainstorm on our I&I project. It was a fun and interactive internal training; I think the participants enjoyed it!”

“Before the training, my team and I had a hard time coming up with innovative ideas. We did not know where to start. The refresher training provided a step-by-step guide on how to develop ideas, prioritise those ideas and use them to solve issues in different ways.”

LET’S CELEBRATETraditional festivals are celebrated all around Asia Pacific and for different reasons. In this issue, CaiXun reached out to colleagues in TVC Japan and Thailand to learn about the popular festivals celebrated in Q2 in their respective home countries. Read on to find out more!

In April, colleagues from TVC Japan celebrated the cherry blossom festival in Tokyo. Hanami, also known as “flower viewing”, is a popular Japanese tradition of viewing the cherry blossoms, or sakura. Sakura blooming, which is typically between late March and April in Tokyo and varies throughout Japan, symbolises the beginning of Spring and a time of renewal. The beauty of sakura is adored by local Japanese and tourists from all over the world. The flowers peak for a short period of 2 weeks before they begin to whither. A great way to view hanami in the day is to gather with family, friends or co-workers for a picnic or potluck party under the fully bloomed trees. Yozakura, or “night sakura”, is also a popular way for locals to enjoy hanami. When night falls, the trees are illuminated, transforming the area into a magical night scene!

Between 13 to 15 April, colleagues from TVC Thailand celebrated the most popular festival in Thailand, known as Songkran. The name Songkran originates from a Sanskrit word meaning passing or approaching. During this time, tourists from all over the world flock to Bangkok, Chiang Mai and the Thai islands to partake and witness the biggest water parade of the year. The 3-day festival marks the important beginning of the Thai New Year. The ritual of water throwing is a symbolic way to wash off all misfortune and to start the new year fresh and clean. Traditionally, locals used small bowls of scented water to sprinkle water on their loved ones as a form of blessing. These days, festival goers would splash water on each other using buckets of water and water guns, turning streets into water battlefields! Also known as a festival of unity, other significant Songkran tradition includes returning home to visit family and loved ones, as well as, paying reverence to ancestors.

(Tanjong Penjuru)
