History of Technology in Education

Page 3: Educ100 presentation

Students

– Are motivated and engaged in the learning process.

– Are participating in active learning.

– Can do their own research on topics of interest.

Learning With Technology

Page 4: Educ100 presentation

• Many of us have learned from teachers or even our peers by using technology, whether it’s a PowerPoint presentation from your teacher or help on a problem from your peer via Skype.

– According to your experience which aspect of technology do you prefer or do you think works best for you?

– Which aspect of technology in education do you dislike or you think works least for you?

Question #1

Page 5: Educ100 presentation

• 5 large scale studies

1. Kulik's Meta-Analysis Study

2. Sivin-Kachala's Review of the Research

3. The Apple Classrooms of Tommorrow

4. West Virginia's Basic Skills/Computer Eucation Statewide Initiative

5. Harold Weglinsky's national Study of Technology's Impact on Mathematics Achievement

Impact of Technology on Student Achievement

Page 6: Educ100 presentation

John Schacter concluded that

a) Computer assisted instruction, or

b) Integrated learning systems technology, or

c) Simulation and software that teaches higher order thinking, or

d) Collaborative networked technologies, or

e) Design and programming technologies,

show positive gains in achievement on researcher constructed tests, standardized tests and national tests.

1. Robot Assisted Language Learning (RALL)• Educational service robots are being used to teach English in

rural areas of Japan.

2. Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC)• Online courses with access via web

3. Minecraft• Simple game filled with box graphics that allows the user to do as

they wish with it

4. Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT)• According to Wikipedia it is a form of computer based tests that

adapts to the examinee's ability level

5. Stealth Assessments• Games with educational content and assessment tools

integrated to help assess the strengths and weaknesses of the student in a certain topic.

Technology Success Stories

MOOCs allow open access to many different university level courses online. Some officials have recommended that first year general courses be offered via MOOCs instead of holding lectures in the university itself.

– Do you as a university student agree with this idea?

– What could be the pros and cons in implementing this?

Question #2

Page 9: Educ100 presentation

• Institutions must compete and innovate according to the expectations of the learners in order to ensure that they are not left behind.

– Active learners of today have certain expectations for their education experience and if these expectations are not met, the learner will go to another institution

Education Technology Revolution

Page 10: Educ100 presentation

• BC education plan

– "Learning Empowered by Technology.”• Improved access to digital tools and resources that support both face-to-

face and online learning.

• Promote the use of technology for both students and educators.

• Improved access to the Internet in B.C. schools.

• Improved provincial student information and reporting system to help teachers plan a more personalized learning experience with students and teachers.

BC Government Takes Action

Page 11: Educ100 presentation

• David Dawson’s Survey– 72.4% of the 321 students

– 87.9% of the 100 educators • Believe that new technology should be encouraged in

schools.

– 60% of the educators • Fear the misuse of technology by students.

– 57% of the students • Think of it as wasting time because the educators have

difficulty using digital technology due to lack of knowledge or technical constraints.

Student Teachers’ Attitudes Towards Digital Education

Page 12: Educ100 presentation

• Should these mixed attitudes towards digital technology (fear of misuse and wasting time) be the reason for educators to not incorporate technology in the classroom?

• What can be done to overcome these attitudes and ensure that technology is successfully used to educate the learners?

Question #3

Page 13: Educ100 presentation

• Some fear technology will make teachers obsolete

• Many argue that

– “Technology doesn't teach. Teachers teach.” – Bill Goodwyn

– Technology will supplant rather than destroy the teaching profession

– New technologies will take over some teacher responsibilities. • It can not make a teacher obsolete

– Teachers will still play an essential role in directing student learning

Is Technology Replacing Teachers?

Page 14: Educ100 presentation

• Do you agree with the idea that technology is replacing teachers? Would you prefer learning from either a robot or online resources? Why or why not would you prefer this?

Question #5

Reflect upon your experience on technology being used in education.

– Do you consider technology as friend or foe when it comes to your learning?

Page 21: Educ100 presentation

Technology in education should not come as a threat to teachers as it is not trying to taking

over their jobs; Rather teachers should incorporate it as much as possible to further

amplify, extend and enhance what the learners know and understand.
