EDTECH 554 - Providing professional development for teachers copy

May 06, 2015

  • 1.INTRODUCTION Are the goals SMART(specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timebound)? Professional development goals that will improve all students learning? Professional development goals that will improve teacher effectiveness? Professional development goals that differentiates the learning? What activities are planned? What are the expected outcomes? How will the learning be measured? How will you ensure the learning returns to the classroom? How will you measure the outcome on student learning?2

2. PROJECT BASED WORKSHOP The workshop will be conducted during the two day professional development inservice training session. It will be conducted by an organization that presents professional training in project based workshops the name of the organizaton is Guerilla Educators. This organization has presented workshops in project based learning. During the 1.5 day workshop teachers will be taught the following:Project Based Service Learning; What it is and Why I Need It Pedagogical Underpinnings of Project Based Service Learning; why PBSL worksApplication of PBSL Across a Wide Variety of DisciplinesIntegrating Curriculum Standards with ProjectsDifferentiated Instruction for ALL Learners and PBSLThe Critical Role of Community Partners in PBSLNetworking Projects Across the Grades3 3. HOW WILL LEARNING BE MEASURED? Learning will be measured both quanititvely and qualitivevly. Quanitive will wil the data collected pre and post assessment Qulative allow from a survey based on the responses of the particpants. The surveys will be returned to the principleDuring the workshop formative and summative evalutions will be given. The formative evaluation will include: Feedback to the participants during the workshop. The summative evaluation Prior to the workshop the teachers will be given a preassessment of their skills in project based learning. The preassessment and post assessment data will be analyzed to determine if the workshop did increase their knowledge and skills at developeing project based lessons.4 4. MEASURE LEARNING AND LEARNING RETURNS TO THE CLASSROOM The principle will work with the teacher and the technolgy staff to develop and implement a project based lesson in alignement with the curriculum. The teacher will be assessed based on the critea adressed in the workshop. The principle will be given a form similar to teacher yearly evaluations. The areas that will be observed will be the areas identified with project learning. The teacher will be able to use the assessment as a formative assessment and continue and use the information to develop their skills in project development.5 5. STUDENT LEARNING Students can be assessed6 6. 7 7. 8 8. 9 9. How will Project Based Learning improve teacher effectiveness? The goal of our department is to assist the teachers To move from tier 1 of technology integration (this tier focuses on the teacher using technology to get their job done) tier 2(This tier involves teacher facilitation of large group learning activities and student productivity use of technology) to tier 3 This tier promotes students to be actively engaged in using technology in individual and collaborative learning activities. At tier three teachers are using technology in the following ways: Teachers enable students to: Create and use online resources to facilitate inquiry (e.g., students create and use online resources such as WebQuests) Engage in inquiry-based projects driven by essential questions (e.g., students create major research projects such as Big 6 essential question projects)10 10. TIER 3 OF TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION Engage in individual or collaborative project-based learning (e.g., students engage in real-world projects and problem-solving using email or websites) Use modeling and simulations (e.g., students conduct simulations using online resources) Write, develop and publish individual and collaborative products (e.g., students publish projects online to be reviewed by parents or peers) Invent products through programming or production (e.g., students produce how-to videos or movies to share with others) Create scaffolding for their own projects (e.g., students create writing prompts or project templates) Are involved with their parents and teachers in the analysis of student data and meeting standards, or participate in developing their own learning plans (e.g., students use classroom-based assessments and assess their own work) Initiate communication with parents, teachers, community members, or other students (e.g., students display self-directed communication through tools such as weblogs)11 11. TEACHER EFFECTIVENESS The project based learning workshop will help in the professional development to move the teachers from a tier one in technology integration into a tier 3. Technology integration is tied to the use of project based learning and this workshop will assist the teachers in understanding how to use project based learning and inegrate technology to achieve their objectives for the curriculum12 12. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT GOALS THAT HOW WILL IMPROVE ALL STUDENTS LEARNING AND HOW WILL IT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT GOALS THAT DIFFERENTIATES THE LEARNINGProject Based Learning has the potential to increase a student's feeling of responsibility for, and control over, his/her own learning. Project Based Learning may be used with all learners: to give structure to those who desire it, flexibility to those who crave it, or to allow time for building skills that are personally challenging Project Based Learning can be used for students with special needs, it can help learners target certain skills, and also help improve metacognition, self-regulation, and motivation.14 14. WHAT ACTIVITIES ARE PLANNED? Development is designed to give educators and educational facilities designers the pedagogical knowledge, understanding, and foundational basis of the Project Based Service Learning methodology. They will receive practical teaching and learning strategies by your own handson project based experience in the sessions, and you will see real students conducting real projects in and out of real classrooms. Participants will then create and refine their own projects15 15. WHAT ARE THE EXPECTED OUTCOMES? We are expecting the teachers to adopting a project-learning approach in their classroom by supplying a workshop in project based learning we are giving the teachers the tools to integrate technoloyg into their learning environment, energizing their curriculum with a real-world relevance and sparking students' desire to explore, investigate, and understand their world while developing 21st century critical thinking skills. We believe that project learning is an effective way to integrate technology into the curriculum. A typical project can easily accommodate computers and the Internet, as well as interactive whiteboards, global-positioning-system (GPS) devices, digital still cameras, video cameras, and associated editing equipment.16 16. How does project based learning differentiate the learning? Professional development goals that differentiates the learning?17 17. Development is designed to give educators and educational facilities designers the pedagogical knowledge, understanding, and foundational basis of the Project Based Service Learning methodology. You will receive practical teaching and learning strategies by your own handson project based experience in the sessions, and you will see real students conducting real projects in and out of real classrooms. Participants will then create their own projects and refine them through the Hallmarks of Effective Teaching and Learning.18 18. INTRODUCTION The technology department will be conducting a workshop on the philosophy, principles and practices of Project Based Learning . During this workshop the teachers will be instructed in: Philosophy, principles and practices of Project Based LearningApplication of PBSL across a wide variety of disciplinesEssential role of Projects in fostering inclusionHow to integrate curriculum and standards with projectsHow PBSL supports differentiated instruction and multiple learning styles19 19. WORKSHOP EVALUATION20 20. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR TEACHERS 1. Professional Development is a key issue in using technology to improve the quality of learning in the classroom 2. Lack of professional development for technology use is one of the most serious obstacles to fully integrating technology into the curriculum (Fatemi, 1999; Office of Technology Assessment, 1995; Panel on Educational Technology, 1997) 3. Traditional sit-and-get training sessions or one-time-only workshops have not been effective in making teachers comfortable with using technology 4.A well-planned, ongoing professional development program one that is a) tied to the school's curriculum goals, b) designed with built-in evaluation, c) sustained by adequate financial and staff support21 21. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR TEACHERS Professional Development should be an integral part of the school technology plan or an overall school-improvement plan, not just an addition to a plan. The technology planning committee should ensure that all stakeholders support the integration of technology into the curriculum. The planning committee must also support continuing professional development for all teachers and administrators. The professional development component should be research based and meet high standards for effective staff development. The training should meet the professional development standards developed by by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards and the Stan
