Arrowtown hair stylist Stacy Mctaggart knows anything can happen at work. One minute you’re giving a regular customer a trim, the next you’ve signed up to 12 days of hair-raising rickshaw racing in India. You may recall our coverage last year of Lisa and Ed Guy’s efforts at the Rickshaw Run. ‘Ed was telling me about it when I was cutting his hair,’ says Stacy. She was inspired, and shared that inspiration with former flatmate Jendi Paterson. ‘Jendi was about 6 weeks after breaking her leg, was bored and crippled, and it sounded like an adventure.’And what have they got themselves into? In April they’ll join 70 or 80 teams from all over the world and will have 12 days to cover more than 2500 km from Jaisalmer to Shillong in a rickshaw, dodging buses, bandits, cows, sand storms and rain storms.Stacy is going because she wants to see India, Jendi is in it to win it, but both are committed to raising funds for charity. They are paying their own way, so 100% of money donated will go to worthy causes. They’ve raised $1000 for a Cool Earth project to save 14.3 acres of forest for the Awajun people of Peru, and are now raising money for Rehabilitation & Disabilities Services, a Queenstown non-profit that supports people affected by disability, injury and illness. If you’d like to donate, Stacy and Jendi have a fundraising page (givealittle.co.nz/cause/rdsqueenstown). They are also planning a quiz night for early March. You can keep up with their exploits on the Rickshaw Run – Team Arrowtown facebook page.

rickshaw run revisitedArrowtown Volunteer Fire Brigade CFO Murray Forward is reminding locals and visitors that the district is still in a prohibited fire season despite the recent wet weather. ‘A bit of rain doesn’t eliminate the risk of fire as the vegetation will dry out soon enough,’ he says. The fire ban entirely prohibits fires in the open, except gas barbecues and gas stoves. That includes fireworks, campfires, charcoal barbecues and braziers, even outdoor pizza ovens or garden fires in permanent surrounds.Murray is also keen to reiterate that smoke alarms save lives. In New Zealand this year there have already been two fires in which someone died because they didn’t have working smoke alarms in their home. Don’t let the next one be you – install long-life photoelectric smoke alarms now.

happy endingsAmerican hitch-hikers Ian Siadak and Kate Howland thought they’d lost all their travel photos when they left their camera on the back seat of a stranger’s car. But thanks to the efforts of a chain of locals they were wrong.‘A lovely couple gave us a short ride from Lake Hawea to Albert Town,’ says Ian. ‘We watched them speed off only to realise we’d left our camera behind.’All they knew was that the couple was from Arrowtown and they drove a black hatchback. Not a lot to go on. Wanaka locals suggested some Facebook pages to post on, and Ian and Kate came to Arrowtown to put notices up with the help of the visitor centre and post office. ‘We did all we could and were just waiting with fingers crossed.’Meanwhile, Arrowtown’s Sue and Geoffrey Carter had found the camera in the back of their car but had no way of returning it. At

LazyDog café Sue told staff member Kelly the story. Kelly had some good ideas for how to get the camera back to its owners, so Sue left it with her.Sue also contacted the holiday park in Wanaka and someone there who saw one of the Lost Camera pleas passed Sue’s number on to Ian and Kate. ‘We called Sue,’ Ian says, ‘and she told us about Kelly. To our surprise, Kelly told us the camera was in Wanaka at her parents’ house. We just walked over from the lakefront and were reunited with it!’Ian says that lots of good people and good vibes went into getting the camera back. ‘We don’t think this would ever happen in the US. Thank you to the local community! You saved our trip!’

swim sensation

A whole lot of dedication and hard work have paid off for Arrowtown’s Kaleb Poole – the 10-year-old swimmer has qualified for the prestigious New Zealand Junior Championships in Auckland next month. Kaleb, who started out with Arrowtown Swim Club but moved to Queenstown Swimming Club so he could compete, currently trains four or five times a week year-round under head coach Albert Szilagyi.

Kaleb has qualified for the 50 m butterfly, the 50 m, 100 m and 200 m backstroke, the 200 m individual medley and 100 m breaststroke. Gracie Seeto also qualified for the 50 m and 100 m breaststroke to make the junior championships.

Kaleb’s mum, Paula Ryan, is immensely proud: ‘It’s great to see the hard work all the kids have put in has paid off.’

call for caddiesIt seems you don’t have to be a pro - or even a good amateur golfer - to take part in the 2016 BMW ISPS Handa New Zealand Open. You can be in the middle of the action on the fairways of two of our finest local courses another way.‘Caddies are a fundamental part of the event at both The Hills and Millbrook,’ says caddy master Andrew Whiley. ‘It does really help if they have some golf knowledge, but most importantly they need to be fit, keep up with the players and able to carry a tour bag around either course.’ Caddies, who start work on 7 March, receive $75 per day on average plus a tip, but Andrew says it is really about ‘taking part and being involved in the play’.And you never know whose bag you might be carrying. Among this year’s crop of caddies is Wellington man Jaimes Wood, who will be carrying the bag for defending champion Jordan Zunic for the second time. He describes last year’s event – his first outing as a caddy – as a mind-blowing experience. ‘It was great to be part of the winning team.’You can register your interest on the website (www.nzopen.co.nz/caddies) or contact Andrew Whiley at [email protected]. There is a $39 cost to register and all caddies receive a golf shirt and hat to wear while caddying and to take home as a souvenir.

Kawarau Blue Pastries

Roll out pre-made puff pastry and cut into 4 cm x 4 cm squares. Line small muffin tin with squares (no need to butter). Place a 2 cm cube of Gibbston Valley Kawarau Blue in the middle. Sprinkle chopped rosemary and drizzle with honey. Bake for 15 minutes at 170°C (fan-bake). Allow to cool slightly before popping them out of the mold and serving. These make a perfect hors d’oeuvre and pair well with Pinot Noir or Shiraz.
