Propose a two poster EA approach. An intuitive EA suitable to these different

audiences and the value proposition for each of them.

Presentation Goal

EA can be as simple as two posters for all levels of

stakeholders to comprehend. The posters illustrate “What is the Enterprise?” from the

aspect of why (Value Chain), what (Business Capability), how (Concept of operation), who (Organization), where (Location) and when (Workload).

The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. The combination of common information become sensitive enterprise material.

It also illustrate the automation and information landscape in the context of enterprise definition.

In addition, It also illustrate internal and external connectivity.

The Enterprise map illustrate the enterprise environment. The master plan illustrate the target architecture .

The purpose of Two Poster EA

EA for all level of stakeholers. Hard copy posters serve well for human cognition. Although technology have evolved rapidly, human

cognition capability is the same for many thousands of years.

EA artifacts are locked in repository, heavy volumes of documents in the dark.

Stealth EA have no value.

Why EA posters ?

The two page EA takes less than 20% of EA effort. However under the 80/20 rule:

80% of people use the 20% of EA. 20% of EA effort deliver 80% EA value.

The 80% of people are the business community. The 20% of people are the engineering and

developers.

EA is a matter between Atomism and Holism rather

than IT and business. Nineteenth-century science went wrong mostly

because of the hard and narrow concept of causation which dominated it.

EA is the effort to incorporate holistic inspiration to the atomism dominate architecture world.

They expect to see application, data and IT infrastructure in EA.

EA is an emerging paradigm to architect the enterprise. It is the orderly arrangement of business capabilities,

organizations, locations, workload, application and information landscape.

The subject of EA is the enterprise not the technologies.

Holistic and whole are abstractive concept and complicate to

explain. Holistic concern about a function whole which can be large or small

as described in macrocosm and microcosm. “Enterprise” means a functional whole. To keep holistic concept simple, EA take a practical holistic

approach by considering an subject from the holistic aspect of why, what, how, who, where and when as described in the Zachman framework.

“Enterprise” in EA means the whole.

Enterprise map apply the principle of the whole is

much greater than the sum of its part. A piece of common information may not be

significant, however, it can become sensitive information by putting the pieces together.

In atomistic culture, value chain, concept of operation, business capability, location maps, organization chart, workload are the unrelated common information.

Enterprise map put all the pieces information on one page to render the unseen enterprise.

The two poster EA approach is by no mean to say EA is simple.

It is simple for the stakeholders but not for the Enterprise Architects.

The challenge is how to package the complicate EA in a simple presentation to raise the attention on the value of EA.

EA is an emerging paradigm, the posters are only the tip of EA iceberg.

The two posters are the result of significant collaborative enterprise architecture effort.

The purpose is to lead the stakeholder to under water treasure of EA

An enterprise can have many Two poster EA. In holistic concept, a universe consist of many small

universe and each one is a functional whole. In a family, parents does not own their children,

each one of them is a functional whole. An enterprise does not only have “One EA”, each

sub enterprise is a functional whole and reflect the same image as describe in Macrocosm and Microcosm.

In mechanical concept, there is only function whole and the rest of parts are not functional whole.

Conclusion

EA can be as simple for the stakeholders as two posters. The two poster constitute the foundation of enterprise

architecture . 80% of stakeholders only use 20% of EA artifact. The posters are easy for the stakeholders but not easy to

prepare. EA is an emerging paradigm. Enterprise Map is a collaborative work, Enterprise Architects

serve as the “Glue” not the “Glue” .
