Dyslexia can be...

Finding it hard to read because you can’t

match sounds to the letters in words. . .

. . . and you may lose the

place a lot when you try

to concentrate

. . . and you may forget

what you have just read

so nothing makes any sense

And don’t even mention reading out loud!

Dyslexia has nothing to do

with intelligence. Some of

the most successful and

smartest people in the world are dyslexic

People with dyslexia have strengths

as well as challenges

Being dyslexic is just a learning style

Dyslexia shouldn’t be a barrier to

success15

Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, who was

dyslexic – says:

“We require people with a unique mind, so

only dyslexics (like Steve) should apply.”

What can help?

A Teacher should never say...

• Listen more carefully

• Read it more carefully…the answer is in the

passage

• Hurry up

• You need to be more careful

• Even a dyslexic child won the Burns competition

• You are a learning curve for me

Page 38: Dyslexia Scotland Education Conference · Miller and I am 16 years old • I am dyslexic • I am a Young Ambassador for Dyslexia Scotland 2. Dyslexia Scotland Young Ambassadors Young

A Teacher should never say...

• The answer is right in front of you

• There is a reward for being first finished

• You have not written much

• Come in at break and finish your work

• You just need to try a wee bit harder

• Dyslexia is only a visual problem
