Dukers Join in on Clean Up Barbados

For the second consecutive year, participants of the Duke Of Edinburgh’s International Award Barbados, were part of the annual Clean Up Barbados, organised by the Future Centre Trust. Gathering at Independence Square in Bridgetown, the group of participants set to work giving the roadways and -beach a once over. The clean-up effort netted several bags of recyclable and non-recyclable materials. Taking part, were participants from the groups at Combermere School, Queen’s College, the Lodge School and the Graydon Sealy Secondary School. Approximately twenty young people were involved and certainly left the area in an improved state.

Great hopes for Programme Expansion

As the Award marks its 50th anniversary, the future looks very bright. On Saturday September 27 six new volunteers took part in Award management training to be able to deliver the Award to more of the country’s youth. The all day training session was held at the Goddards Training Room and focused on the operating structure of the programme.

The group had an interactive session and left with improved working knowledge of the Award. The participants came from the St. Michael School, Codrington School, Deighton Griffith Secondary School, Christ Church Foundation School, St. Leonard’s Boys’ Secondary School, Providence Secondary School and University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus.

Green living at CASC 2013—Journey to greener Barbados

The code name for CASC 2013 grew out of a local move to encourage young participants to be more focused on living environmentally friendly lives. It was decided that there would an educational component to CASC 2013 so that all who enjoyed the camp would be able to go away with improved knowledge how we as humans are impacting on the natural environment. Such knowledge is important to ‘dukers’ as the adventurous Journey requires participants and leaders to spend a great deal of time outdoors and using many natural resources.

To this end there were two components to the greening concept at CASC 2013: Journey to A Greener

Barbados; education and practice. The Future Centre Trust was enlisted to assist the planning committee of CASC 2013 in selecting appropriate materials and themes to be incorporated into the camp. Cherise Gibson, Executive Director of the Future Centre Trust came to the camp and gave a talk about the environment and recycling.

Of Sunsets and stories ...reunion at Gun Hill

There was a meeting of generations when dukers of all ages got together at Gun Hill Signal station in St. George. As part of the fiftieth anniversary celebrations a sunset cocktail evening was held at the Barbados National Trust site. There were quite a few laughs as stories of duke experiences were shared. Many reminisced on their time as participants and in varying capacities with the Award in Barbados. Some of these stories were recorded and across the board the strength o f the programme as a source of personal development was emphasised.

Chairman of the trustees Dr. Carmichael was part of the event and signed copies of his book ‘Gully Adventures A Stream of Barbadian life’. The music and dancing came together into an evening of more great Award moments and memories.

During that time participants were able to have questions answered and gained useful knowledge. Cherise left behind a display which featured energy saving tips and facts on how the environment is affected by pollution. Daily duties at basecamp included sorting trash into categories of plastic, paper & cardboard and non-recyclable. Items.

Participants at CASC 2013: Journey to A Greener Barbados were given the chance to put these tips into practice when they took part in the community service project on Thursday 15th August at Congor Bay in St. John. Working along the coastline, inches away from the beckoning

waters of the sea, the participants collected pounds of recyclable and non-recyclable trash. In addition to simply sorting and bagging what they found, the participants had to note the types and quantities of each item that as bagged. This gave an insight into just how much waste is floating around in the waters around the island and on land. The final total of waste collected was 151lbs of recyclable material and 224+ lbs of non recyclable material . Bags and bags were sent on to recycling company Bs Recycling.

Other features of the green concept at the camp was the purpose of the gold groups’ other adventurous journey. Even with the final group reports there was no use of the traditional paper reports , instead reports were delivered with the use of modern technology. Some groups opted for the

well known Power point presentation and others actually compiled videos documentaries.
