Happy One Year Anniversary!

A lthough you may have been unaware that the management of our publications changed in May 2010, you probably noticed the gradual improvements in presentation, layout and content made throughout the year.

We provide the only source of relevant community and school news for many of our readers, and the feedback has been extremely positive.

In addition to the established Our City Weston and Davie Town Times magazines, we introduced two new publications, the Pines Miramar Town Times and the Plantation Town Times. Now our award-winning, local community news magazines arrive every month in 80,000 mail boxes across Southwest Broward County. In addition, all of our publications are available online at www.ourcityweston.com.

I would like to thank our readers and customers, as well as our dedicated staff, for making this success possible. Here’s to another successful year to come.

Sincerely,

Sven BudzischSven Budzisch

A s the sun sets on june 21st – the summer solstice – a group of neighbors from Sunshine Ranches will meet for a small informal gather-

ing at Sunshine Ranches Equestrian Park. They will celebrate the official start of summer; catch up with old friends and meet some new ones; and experience the beauty of Richard Medlock’s sculpture.

The word “solstice” is derived from a combination of Latin words meaning “sun” and “to stand still.” Solstices occur twice a year. They are the longest and shortest days of the year, marking the start of summer and winter, respectively. They are also the best days to witness one of the key design elements of Medlock’s Equestrian Oasis which is located in the park.

The public art feature reflects both form and func-tion. The main area is shaped like a horseshoe and contains earth berms, stones for seating, a waterfall, fountain and shade trees. A concrete saddle sculpture sits on the western ridge of the berm. It is strategically placed so that it cradles the sunset dur-ing summer and winter solstices. When the sun sets, it appears to sit perfectly in the saddle, where a rider would.

Residents have celebrated the solstice since the park opened in 2004. This year’s event is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m., leaving enough time for everyone to find a spot for their chair or blanket before the sun sets at 8:15 p.m. Organizers will serve refreshments and juice. “The setting is very peaceful,” said December Lauretano-Haines,

Parks and Open Space Coordinator. “It is a great opportunity for people to take some time out from their busy lives and reconnect with neighbors and friends.”

Sunshine Ranches Equestrian Park is located at 5840 Volunteer Rd., just north of Stirling Rd. in Sunshine Ranches. It has more than 20 acres of lushly-landscaped open space designed for the enjoyment of Southwest Ranches residents and their horses. It is the City’s first public recreational facility and a great place to school a horse; walk a dog; meet some friends or enjoy the surroundings. The park includes a 10,400-square foot practice ring, 37,500-square foot show ring, as well as more than 10 acres of horse and nature trails.

It also has a playground, restroom facility and a sheltered seating area. Paula Watkins recently moved to the area. She frequently rides her horse through

the park and brings her two children to the tot lot. She plans to attend the celebration. “I have always admired Medley’s design and I am excited to see the effect of the sun on the saddle,” Watkins said. “I am also looking forward to getting to know some of my neighbors.”

There is no charge for the event. The entire community is welcome. For more informa-tion, visit www.swranches.org or call 954-343-7452.

The Weekley Brothers Davie Pro Rodeo has been bringing top-notch rodeo entertain-ment to Davie since 1986. This month, thousands

of rodeo fans will put on their finest cowboy boots and hats for the 25th Annual Weekley Brothers Davie Pro Rodeo for Youth, benefiting 5 Star Youth of America.

The excitement begins on June 24, when approxi-mately 5,000 summer campers will experience the rodeo at the Bergeron Rodeo Ground, 4271 Davie Rd. in Davie. On June 25, at 8 p.m., the rodeo will be

open to the general public and organizers are expect-ing a full house. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for kids and sell out quickly. “It is a great opportunity to become cowboys and cowgirls for a night and watch some of the top names in rodeo,” said Troy Weekley. The professionals will compete in bronco riding, team roping, steer wrestling, girls’ barrel racing, bull riding and more. They are hoping to take home some of the prize money, which could be as much as $40,000.

The original Davie Rodeo Arena was built in 1946 by a few local cowboys and some neighborhood residents.

Today, the Davie Arena on the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds is a 72,000 sq. ft. covered facility with a seating capacity of 7,500. It hosts many concerts, the Florida Westfair and the Davie Pro Rodeo Series. The Davie Pro Rodeo is sanc-tioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and has been a stop on the Pro Rodeo Circuit for over 220 rodeos. Much of Davie’s architectural style is mod-eled after the American West, creating the ideal setting.

Much of Broward County is surrounded by canals and water-

ways which are home to fish, birds, alligators and other wildlife. Last month, students were asked to take a close look at their environ-ment and capture the images on paper for the fifth annual

“Everglades Eyes: What Children See” art contest, sponsored by the Old Davie School, in partnership with Central Broward Water Control District (CBWCD).

The contest was open to all 4th and 5th grade public and private school students that live within the CBWCD. There were 106 students who submitted work from five schools, including Griffin Elementary, Silver Ridge Elementary, Cooper City Elementary, St. Mark Catholic School and Gloria Dei Lutheran Academy. They expressed themselves in oil, watercolor, pastel, acrylic, mixed media, photography, collage and other mediums. All of the artwork was original and included a wide variety of images from the Everglades.

A distinguished group of local community leaders and art lovers judged the artwork and the winners were announced on April 15th at an awards ceremony at the Old Davie School Museum. The following were the winners: 1st place, Gaige Bencivenga of Griffin Elementary for “Fluttering Wings”; 2nd place, Katlyn Jones of Cooper City Elementary school for “The Swamp.” and 3rd place, Felipe Lopez of Griffin Elementary

for “Flight at Sunrise.” Each was presented with a United States Savings Bond. “All of the students did a fabulous job,” said CBWCD Outreach Coordinator Constance Ruppender.

The CBWCD consists of a 45 sq. mile area that includes more than 100 miles of canals, located within six cities and towns, as well as unincor-porated areas of Broward

County. The idea for the contest was developed in response to an educational pro-gram it offers to 4th and 5th classes at public and private schools within the District’s boundaries. Ruppender visits the schools during in-class field trips to teach students about the history of the Everglades; the characteristics of wetlands and what they can do to preserve them; how the Everglades watershed functions and what they can do to prevent pollution; jobs in water management and much more. “The contest encour-ages the students to connect what they learn in the classroom to the real world,” said Ruppender. “It helps them understand that if they throw something in the canal it will end up in the Everglades or the ocean.”

C lifford Lockwood, 17, is on his way to sharing a prestigious title with notables like Neil Armstrong, Michael Bloomberg, Gerald R. Ford, Bill Gates Sr., James A. Lovell Jr. and many others. If everything

goes as planned, he will soon become Troop 128’s next Eagle Scout. Clifford joined the Boy Scouts of America when he was in kindergarten

and has been working his way toward becoming an Eagle Scout, the highest rank attainable in the program. Requirements include earning at least 21 merit badges, as well as an extensive service project that the Scout plans, organizes, leads, and manages.

Clifford lives close to Davie’s Math Igler Citrus Park and often sees children playing and horseback riders on the path. He decided on an Eagle Scout project that would benefit both. He planted citrus trees to support the park’s theme.

He also cleaned and refurbished an existing well and installed an old-fashioned pitcher pump to provide water for the horses and citrus trees. In order to design the pump, he completed research on the Internet; tapped into his father’s knowledge of plumbing and consulted with a neighbor who works with water management and irrigation. Next he presented his plan, including computer generated images and sketches, to several Town of Davie committees and departments for approval. The last challenge was to raise money for the project, get the trees donated and find volunteers.

On May 7, more than 40 volunteers showed up to help, including Councilwoman Susan Starkey. They

dug a trench approximately two feet deep, six inches wide, and 50 feet long to bury the pipe that would connect the well to the pump. They also dug a dry well surrounding the pump for drainage. They installed two hitching posts so that the riders could tie up their horses while they drank from watering buckets and planted the four donated citrus trees. “Now there is fresh well water for the horses and the citrus plants,” said Clifford. “This pump should last at least 25 years.”

Clifford still has a few steps left before he earns his badge. He needs to present the project to his Scout Master and then to the Scout Board. Clifford plans to stay active in the troop and help younger boys achieve their Eagle Scout badges.

A rchbishop Edward A. McCarthy High School in Southwest Ranches reached a new pinnacle in the sports world. Javier Rodriguez,

Davie resident and junior at the school, competed in a sixteen man bracket and won the 143 pound wrestling division in the Brute Adidas National Tournament held in Independence, Missouri on April 9/10. Javier is the first

student to win a National Championship in the history of Archbishop McCarthy High School sports.

Javier became interested in wrestling when he entered high school. He was a Varsity wrestler all three years and lettered each year. “My dad encouraged me to try wrestling because he thought I would be good at it,” said Javier. “I tried it and I love it!” Under the guidance of

McCarthy Head Wrestling Coach Joe Bertalone and Volunteer Assistant Coach Mike Turner, Javier became more successful each year. He had an outstanding year as a freshman and was a state qualifier as a sophomore. In his junior year, he placed fourth in the state in his weight divi-sion, before becoming an All American National Champion at the Brute Adidas National Tournament.

“Javier is the hardest work-ing student athlete that we have on our team,” said Coach Bertolone. “Javier is the type of student who learns every time

he steps on the mat. He is very open to being coached and making adjustments in order to improve.” Bertolone was a two time heavy weight Division 3 National Champion, at John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio and has been the Head Coach at McCarthy since 2000.

I n the month of June, area residents can explore many of the diverse cultural treasures

that Broward County, Boca Raton and Delray Beach have to offer - all for the price of only one membership. This is the fourth year that local attractions, museums, and cultural destinations are offering recipro-cal memberships during Broward Attractions and Museum Month (BAMM). This year, 17 organizations are participating and three

- Old Davie School Historical Museum, Flamingo Gardens and Young at Art - are located in Davie.

Both current and new members of the par-ticipating organizations receive free entry with proof of membership. Several are offering reduced membership rates and special programming in June. “South Florida is a prime destination with a unique array of activities and attractions to enjoy,” said Mary Birch-Hanson of the Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum. “Whether a person has been a longtime museum supporter or has just signed up, the program enables everyone to experience the attractions and cultural scene for the price of one membership.” Non-members often

ask Birch-Hanson which one they should join. “I suggest that they join the one that they will want to visit throughout the year.”

Holly Cantor of Davie plans to visit most of the museums in June with her three children, ages 6 to 11. “I feel fortunate to have so many eco-nomical and worthwhile

choices of places to go with my children when they are out of school,” said Cantor. “I am grateful to all of the participating organizations and look forward to BAMM every year.” The 17 organizations that are participating include: African American Research Library & Cultural Center, Art and Culture Center of Hollywood, Boca Raton Historical Society & Museum, Bonnet House Museum & Gardens, Cinema Paradiso, Flamingo Gardens, Fort Lauderdale History Center, Historic Stranahan House Museum, IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame & Museum, International Swimming Hall of Fame Museum, Museum of Art - Fort Lauderdale Nova Southeastern University, Old Davie School Historical Museum, Old Dillard Museum, Plantation Historical Museum, Seminole Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum, The Children’s Museum - Boca Raton and Young at Art.

health & wellness

The life expectancy of Americans has doubled since the 1900’s. According to these trends, the majority of Americans born today will likely live to 100 years old or more. But what

good is longevity without quality of life? According to the Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 80% of American adults have one chronic condition and 50% have at least two. These chronic conditions can be crippling as they cause years of pain and decrease optimal functioning.

The good news is that research has shown that poor health is not an inevitable consequence of aging. We have all heard through

lifestyle changes we can increase our quality of life but how do we do this? You can do this by partnering with a physician who practices functional medicine. Functional medicine is an evolu-tion in the practice of medicine that better addresses the health-care needs of the 21st century. Functional medicine focuses on the individual as a whole and not as isolated parts / specialties. It combines traditional medicine with what is sometimes referred to as “alternative” or

“integrative” medicine.

Functional medicine differs from traditional medicine in the following ways:

▸ It treats the root cause of the illness and not just the symptoms. For example, let’s look at Migraines. Traditional doctors would prescribe medications and rest, but what is the underlying cause of this migraine? Functional medicine would investigate the source of the migraine, such as a possible food sensitivity or hormonal imbalance.

▸ The focus is on prevention through nutrition, diet, exercise and elimination of toxins. Through a compilation of your history and laboratory testing, the doctor may prescribe supplements or a detoxification program tailored to your needs and goals.

▸ It is client centered. The practitioner listens to the client by learning his or her individual story and tailors treatments that address the individual’s needs.

▸ The practitioner will consider multiple factors on assessing the client’s clinical imbalances such as environmental inputs, mind-body elements and genetic make-up.

As you can see from the list above, functional medicine practitioners are interested in the person as a whole. We are interested in you – your health, what you eat, your home and work environment, how you communicate with others, how you relax, which medications and supplements your taking, what chemicals you have been exposed to and how your digestive system is functioning. These items paint a picture of who you are and can give a great wealth of information to tailor a plan to make the changes you need to feel better and ultimately optimize your health and consequently possibly your longevity!

Written by Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette who is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and specializes in Functional Medicine and Sottopelle Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy. His practice is located within Bellissimo Medical Spa at 2665 Executive Park Drive, Suite #3, in Weston. For information, call 954-384-8989 to schedule your compli-mentary consultation. More than 750 neighbors and friends gathered at Sunshine Ranches Equestrian Park on April 16th to celebrate the Town’s 11th Birthday. They participated in a variety of family games and activities including face painting, hay rides, egg tosses, tug-o-war, pony rides and more. Some were also brave enough to enter the traditional pie and watermelon eating contests. Broward County Commissioner District 8 Barbara Sharief presented a proclamation and Boy Scout Troop 224 presented colors. The BSO Mobile Command and Equestrian Patrol, Southwest Ranches Volunteer Fire Rescue and Canine Search and Rescue gave demonstrations. “The annual event is a great way to visit with neighbors,” said Lee Rickles.

The David Posnack Hebrew Day Middle School of Davie recently implemented a program to eliminate bullying and increase tolerance. On April 12, the school received the Anti-Defamation League’s (ADL) prestigious No

Place for Hate designation for its efforts. No Place for Hate was developed to organize schools to work together and develop

projects that enhance the appreciation of diversity and foster harmony amongst diverse groups. The campaign empowers schools to promote respect for individual and group differences while challenging prejudice and bigotry. “Bullying is a common problem among middle school students,” said Middle School Principal Gayle Green. “The kids often feel it is okay to say things online that they might not say in person. They also have a tendency to join cliques which exclude people. It is important to sensitize kids to bullying at an early age.”

In January, David Posnack selected 30 students to participate in “Becoming an Ally,” an all-day, grant-funded workshop facilitated by the ADL. The students used the tools they learned in the workshop to help lead the effort at the school to promote the understanding of diversity, the celebration of differences, and the discouragement of bias and prejudice.

During Black History Month, students researched the contributions of famous African Americans and prepared presentations on the Civil Rights Movement. For Women’s History Month, students researched suffrage and equal rights and created a display highlighting the accomplishments of a diverse group of women across history. The final activity was a collaborative effort between the art and English departments during National Poetry month. Students created No Place for Hate artwork inspired by Harlem Renaissance artist Romare Bearden and studied the work of several Harlem

Renaissance poets. Both the artwork and poetry were displayed at the school. Green says that she has noticed a heightened sensitivity to bullying since the effort

began. “We are very proud of our students for accomplishing these goals and being recognized as a No Place for Hate school,” said Green. She is hoping to receive grant money again next year to allow more students to participate in the seminars.

cover story

Salon One80 is about transformation. As the name reflects, here you will experience your personal 180 in the chair. But, it’s about more than

just image. Salon One80 is changing clients’ perceptions and attitudes as well.

Salon One80 is definitely not your typical salon. Owner Renee Zapata takes pride in knowing that she has created the salon version of Cheers. “It’s a place where everyone knows your name and you’re treated like one of the family.”

Renee considers her staff her extended family. For the past two decades she has worked alongside most of them.

“I have worked in the industry for 21 years, beginning as a shampoo girl when I was only 14,” notes Renee. “At 17 I started cutting hair. Owning my own salon has been a lifelong dream.”

With the support of her family, both at home and at the salon, she realized this dream last December when she opened Salon One80 with her childhood friend, Abby.

The salon is a reflection of Renee herself. The décor is a delicate balance of elegance and chic contemporary. It’s the kind of place you want to hang out…and that’s just what people do. “Many of our clients have been with us so long, they now know each other. It’s like a social gathering here,” she says.

And that’s exactly the fun, family atmosphere Renee wants. She and the other stylists and technicians all boast a wonderful following of clients. “Some of my clients have been with me so long; I now cut the hair of their children. It’s amazing!”

But, that’s not to say new clients aren’t welcome; on

the contrary. Now is the perfect time to experience the incredible services offered at Salon One80. The full-service salon offers a complete menu of hair and nail services, as well as skin care and facial treatments using the exclusive Dermalogica product line.

While Renee considers her specialty to be color and highlighting, the salon also offers hair extensions and keratin straightening treatments. “We use Global Keratin which is one of the best brands available. Not only does it prevent frizz, but it’s one of the only products that is safe in saltwater. That’s big here in South Florida because with most keratin treatments you can’t go to the beach.”

Salon One80 is also pleased to provide Gelish for nails. It’s a soak off gel polish that lasts for up to two weeks with no chipping or fading.

Renee is committed to offering clients the best prod-ucts and services in the industry. “My staff and I all take continuing education classes to keep current on the latest techniques and trends,” shares Renee, noting that they all recently returned from a huge hair show in Orlando.

Dog bite cases really hit home, especially when a cherished pet dog bites a child. According to the Centers for Disease and Control, 4.5 million Americans are bitten

by dogs each year. And, of that, one in five dog bites results in injuries that require medical attention. Unfortunately, children ages 5 to 9 years rate highest for dog bite related injuries.

As a personal injury attorney, I have had my share of unfortunate dog bite cases. In almost every case, it was the first time that the dog bit a person. In almost every single case, the dog owner was

surprised that the dog bit a human being because it had no aggressive history and had never bitten anyone else in the past.

This topic is especially personal to me because I am a father who is very protective of my children. Most parents don’t know the dangers associated with dogs. Unfortunately, I see it all the time. Many times, when families are walking in the neighborhood or at a park, parents permit their kids to walk up to dogs and pet them. I don’t allow that because I know first hand what a first bite can do. I have witnessed injuries that still resonate in my mind.

I am asking that all Moms and Dads in South Florida be extremely cautious with your children around dogs. Even if the dog’s owner tells you that his/her dog is great with kids and has never bitten anyone before, do not let your children pet dogs that they do not know.

The Centers for Disease and Control has offered safety tips specifically geared towards parents and children to prevent them from being bitten by dogs. Please share them with your kids. They are as follows:

▸ Do not approach an unfamiliar dog. ▸ Do not run from a dog or scream. ▸ Remain motionless when approached by an unfamiliar dog. ▸ If knocked over by a dog, roll into a ball and lie still. ▸ Do not play with a dog unless supervised by an adult. ▸ Immediately report stray dogs or dogs displaying unusual behavior. ▸ Avoid direct eye contact with a dog. ▸ Do not disturb a dog that is sleeping, eating, or caring for puppies. ▸ Do not pet a dog without allowing it to see and sniff you first. ▸ If bitten, immediately report the bite to the police and/or animal control .

Dear Friend,

I want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though,

let me say a few other things first.Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know,

when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the right.

Twenty years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more…

A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened!

It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few.

Here’s what some of my patients had to say:“Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo

and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have

chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s a simple as that!

Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor.

You Benefit from an Amazing Offer-Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well

write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 6/30/11) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $35. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell YOU THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.

Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Mylene and Nyrie – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee.

Our office is called Windmill Health Center and it’s at 17160 Royal Palm Blvd., Suite 1 in the Windmill Professional Plaza. Our phone number is 954-217-4881. Call Mylene, Nyree or Evee for an appointment. We can help you. Thank you.

For more information regarding our services please visit our website www.WindmillHealthCenter.com. If you would like to email us with your questions, you may reach us at [email protected] – Rick Behar, D.C.

P.S. I am also offering the second family member for only $27.

P.P.S. Your time is as valuable as mine. That’s why I have a no-wait policy. You will be seen within minutes of your appointment.

D id you know that your skin is your body’s largest organ? It is true. And while we generally focus only on making our skin look as good as possible, it is even more

important to keep the skin healthy. At Cleveland Clinic Florida, highly skilled dermatologists can help you achieve skin that is as beautiful as it is healthy.

It is surprising, but many people are unaware of how common skin cancer is. Over 1 million cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed this year and about 20 percent of Americans will develop some form

of skin cancer within their lifetimes. Even more troubling, melanoma is the second most common form of cancer in women between the ages of 20 and 29. When detected early, however, skin cancer is very curable. And because skin cancer is readily seen and easy to diagnose, it is vital to have your skin checked from head-to-toe by a trained dermatologist on a yearly basis.

the abc’s of skin cancerAlthough only a physician can conclusively diagnose skin cancer, there are warning

signs you should be aware of. If you notice a mole with asymmetry, border irregularities, color variations or diameter greater than the size of a pencil eraser, it is imperative to get it checked out as soon as possible.

enovations to Memorial Cancer Institute at Memorial Hospital West in Pembroke Pines were completed in May, enhancing patient care and expanding the space and capacity for out-patient treatment, tests and research.

The $2.9 million makeover increases the number of patient examination rooms, outpatient bone marrow transplantation suites and chemo-therapy infusion bays. In addition, the pharmacy has been enlarged and upgraded. A facelift to the building’s façade frames broad win-dows in vibrant colors and permits natural light to brighten the interior.

Cancer treatments vary widely from person to person, while numerous services overlap. Some oncology treatments may require patients to receive chemotherapy and radiation therapy during the same visit. In keeping with Memorial Healthcare System’s focus on patient- and family-centered care, the renovation of Memorial Cancer Institute streamlines services with ease of access in mind.

High-tech equipment and diagnostic and clinical testing labs provide expedited results and analyses. With social workers, dietitians and support services all under one roof, services are centralized to save patients’ time and energy.

The upgraded facility has increased the number of chemotherapy bays to 21. Another new suite was created to administer photopheresis treatments to patients in Broward County’s only program of this type. In addition, three outpatient suites were created for patients receiving bone marrow transplantations. Since opening in 2007, the outpatient Bone Marrow Transplant Program has successfully transplanted 44 patients.

In March, Memorial Cancer Institute received the Certificate of Need from the state to offer inpatient bone marrow transplantation services.

“The certification allows us to immediately begin performing inpatient autologous transplants, using the patient’s own stem cells, and allo-geneic transplants, using matched donor’s stem cells, in about 18 months,” says C. Kennon Hetlage, Administrator and Chief Executive Officer at Memorial Hospital West.

More than 200 physicians, researchers, nurses and support personnel provide treatments and disease-specific programs at Memorial Cancer Institute at Memorial Hospital West and Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood. The CyberKnife® technology at Memorial Hospital West is a noninvasive alternative to surgery designed to treat tumors anywhere in the body with submillimeter accuracy. This outpatient procedure, which targets inoperable cancers that cannot be treated by traditional radiation, is virtually painless and the recuperation period is minimal. Radiation oncologists at both locations use the sophisticated RapidArc™ radiotherapy technology, which delivers tumor-destroying radiation with unprecedented speed and precision.

As the first of its kind in Florida, the Image Recovery Center® at Memorial Hospital West offers personalized counseling and services to help patients adjust to the physical and emotional changes they experience due to chemotherapy, radiation therapy or surgery. The array of services includes wig consultations, mastectomy products, nail services, massage, acupuncture, yoga, and relaxation and imag-ery techniques.

The renovation of Memorial Cancer Institute precedes the planned December 2011 opening of an 80-bed expansion at Memorial Hospital West. The entire third floor of the new tower will be dedicated to oncology treatments, with 40 additional beds for cancer patients. A new fourth floor will house telemetry and medical or surgical beds.

Memorial Cancer Institute at Memorial Hospital West is located at 801 North Flamingo Road in Pembroke Pines. For more information, call 954-844-6868 or visit www.MHS.net.

Cooper City’s Embassy Creek Elementary continues to focus on the arts. After months of prepa-

ration, the school’s drama club presented Stuart Little for a sold out crowd.

Second grade teacher Idalmy Sanchez started the club three years ago. Her stu-dents have always role-played the novels they read in class to help bring the books to life. She was continually impressed by the performances and wanted to find a way to provide the kids with opportunities to develop their creative talent, self esteem, communication skills and teamwork through real life experiences. “We have so many talented kids at the school,” said Sanchez. “They should not have to wait until high school to experience drama and follow their artistic dreams.”

The drama club meets twice a week after school and includes 2nd to 5th grad-ers. The kids have to recite a monologue before a panel of theater professionals who judge the performances and select the members of the club. The first two years,

the drama club performed James and the Giant Peach and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. This year, she chose Stuart Little so that the 20 original club members who are graduating would have the opportunity to experience a musical. “I selected a performance that involved dance, music and choreography so that the students could see what takes place in a real theater,” said Sanchez. She also moved the location from Embassy Creek to Western High School.

Sanchez has tried to create an atmosphere where the actors feel like they are part of professional the-ater performing on Broadway. The kids began their preparation by reading

“Stuart Little” and watching the movie. They worked closely with the parents, teachers and sponsors who helped with sets, costumes, lighting, props and choreography. Sanchez says that she spends countless hours working with the kids throughout the year and on the production because she believes in it. “When I see the kids perform, it makes it all worth it,” said Sanchez. “I want the club to be a rewarding experience for the kids that is filled with

lasting memories.”

there’s a difference between what they owed on the mortgage and what the bank sold the house at the foreclosure auction. This is called a “deficiency judgment.” Deficiency judgments are ticking time bombs that can explode years after borrowers lose their homes.

A lender also has the right to seek a deficiency judgment against homeowners who convinced their bank to approve a short sale and even in cases where the bank takes back the property through a deed in lieu of foreclosure. Releasing title to the bank does not always wipe out the debt. A mortgage has two parts: a pledge of collateral (represented by the home), and a promise to pay the loan under the promissory note. Lenders may release property liens to facilitate short sales without releasing borrowers from their obligations to pay.

Lenders or collec-tion agencies may wait until debtors have recov-ered financially before seeking a deficiency judgment. In Florida, the bank can wait up to 5 years to seek a deficiency judgment. Once the court grants a deficiency judgment, the lender has 20 years to collect it! Moreover, the lender can request

your financial records, garnish your wages, repossess your vehicles, and even freeze your bank accounts.

In order to short-circuit lenders’ attempts to seek a deficiency judgment in the future, it is imperative that after the home is sold at foreclosure auction, the former homeowner immediately file for bankruptcy protection. Since the deficiency judg-ment would be considered an unsecured debt, it will be forever discharged through the bankruptcy proceeding and the bank could never collect it. In “short sale” or deed in lieu scenarios, most lenders are willing to release the deficiency judgment amount. However, many borrowers may not be aware that they have to ask for such a release. If you are pursuing a short sale or a deed in lieu of foreclosure, be sure to ask the bank to release you from any further obligation or deficiency under the mortgage. If the bank refuses, bankruptcy proceedings can also avoid any liability after a short sale or return of your property to the bank through a deed in lieu.

A more detailed explanation of the different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, or at risk of foreclosure, and key foreclosure defense strategies are discussed in a new instructional DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight for Your Home,” which is available in English and Spanish. Why do some cases seem to settle so effortlessly and others seem to be a constant battle? There are a number of reasons why this seems to occur. The most

common reason is that either one or both of the parties have entered the negotiations with unrealistic expectations. They think that they are entitled to more than the law will provide. This is especially dif-ficult for someone to accept when they feel they have been wronged by the other party and there should be some punishment handed

down to compensate him or her. This however is a no fault state and as such, for the most part, someone’s wrongdoing or perceived wrongdoing is never taken into consideration.

Why do people have unrealistic expectations? It could be based upon a number of different factors. The most common reason is that some people are thinking emotion-ally. It becomes difficult to grasp certain legal concepts when someone is either very mad or very angry. The law as it is explained to them doesn’t seem fair and so they want to continue the battle. Sometimes they are correct, the law is not always fair. It is however the law and you can for the most part be assured that a judge will in fact follow the law in ruling in your case.

Sometimes a person can be influenced by either friends or family members who don’t understand the law but attempts to advise a person nonetheless. I am often amazed how some individuals will give more credibility to advice given by a neighbor down the street than an attorney they are paying money to for his/her advice. Sometimes, unfortunately, people want to hear only what they want to hear.

Individuals who are contemplating a divorce often research the internet and sud-denly become “experts.” There are many on line sites that are educational and can assist in understanding the process. There are however many sites that have incorrect information and can distort a persons expectations. It is also important to remember that each state has different laws and therefore if you are researching laws in North Carolina it may not have anything to do with what you can anticipate in Florida.

The most important thing to remember is that negotiations to reach a successful settlement require some “give and take.” Nobody will settle for “their worst day in court.” That certainly how attorneys weigh the value of a settlement offer. If the offer is worse than what you might expect form a judge, then there is really no reason to settle. If however, both parties understand that a settlement means giving up something to receive something, and they can put aside their emotions, a settlement should be able to be reached. It is important to remember, just like it takes two to tango, it takes two reasonable people to settle a case.

T eachers have a profound impact on our chil-dren’s lives. Few could argue with the obvious role a teacher plays in sculpting a child’s development, but

all could agree that society still fails to truly value this power-ful relationship. Even though governments, politicians and our newspaper headlines recognize the importance of educa-tion, we as a society still fall short in supporting our words in monetary worth.

Teachers provide children not only with academic skills but vital life skills that help them to become successful teenagers, adults and ultimately parents. Teachers lay the foundation that, when built upon, leads to our future doctors, lawyers, athletes and hundreds of other professions that are compensated much higher than a classroom teacher ever will be compensated.

In casual conversations on the topic of education, the majority of us agree that teachers are undervalued; however, few of us take the time to recognize how else we can show our understanding and appreciation for the impact they have on our children’s lives. It’s the simplest of things that are most often forgotten; how a mere thank you can go a long way in providing at least some form of compensation that is so truly deserved.

Teachers reap certain benefits that not many other professionals can claim. Every day they are able to see how their influence and guidance enable another human being to flourish. Every day they get to see that “spark” when a child makes a connection. At the end of the day, tired and exhausted, they are able to go home knowing they have made a difference in a child’s life. However, how many of us stop to recognize that this is the

work they do each day and that it is all for the sake of our own children?

Take the time to pro-vide your child’s teacher with at least the minimum compensation of a thank you. A few words of grati-tude that are well thought out and shared elicit a sentiment that is a very powerful and permanent message...you are appreci-ated. Those words help to validate the work they have already done and provide the motivation to continue the work they are doing by knowing it is recognized.

When asked what a teacher makes, the true answer is so much more than a monetary response would suggest...teachers “make” a difference.

For months I have been touting that now is the best time to put your property on the market and that now is the best time to purchase – whether you are upsizing or

downsizing. The banks have had ample time since the paperwork “debacle” to get their acts together.

According to Steve Harney, my first source for Real Estate prognostication (kcmblog.com), “the banks will be releasing larger numbers of distressed properties to market over the next six months.

We must realize that this influx of discounted inventory will have an impact on the values of neighboring homes. How large an impact?

According to RealtyTrac a foreclosure sells for 59% of the value of a similar non-distressed property. Therefore, this foreclosure inventory will affect values in two ways:

▸ As Discounted Competition - Obviously, a segment of purchasers will prefer the discounted property based on price alone. Even if the distressed property is in need of substantial repair, the buyer is getting the property at a 41% discount. Price is determined by supply and demand. Distressed properties will eat up a portion of the demand for housing and that will put downward pressure on all values.

▸ As Comparable Sales on Your Appraisal - Even after you put your house into contract, this distressed inventory can still impact your transaction. Unless your purchaser is paying all cash, there will be an appraisal of your property by the bank who is giving the mortgage to your buyer to complete the purchase. Because of the volume of distressed properties selling in almost every market, banks are instructing appraisers to use these discounted sales in determining values of non-distressed sales. We can argue the logic of this some other time. At this point, we must simply be aware that this is taking place.

The bottom line is that over the next several months, banks will be moving substan-tial numbers of foreclosures onto the market. This will impact values of other homes in the region. If you are considering selling, now might be the best time. You want to be sold and closed before these properties come to market and impact your price.”

As an experienced Real Estate professional for Davie, Cooper City and all of Southwest Broward, I rely on researchers such as Harney to stay in touch with what is happening in our marketplace and you should do the same. In a few years, you could be “touting” the fact that you took my advice and made your move at just the right time in the market --- NOW!

Many people answer this question, “good health is feeling good.” There is so much more to being healthy than how you feel. The World Health Organization defines

health as: a state of optimal physical, mental, and social well being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Webster’s defines health as: a state of wholeness in which all organs are functioning 100%, 100% of the time. Health is not just how you feel, it’s how you are functioning.

Why can’t I use symptoms as a measure of my health?Thousands of Americans die of heart attacks each and every year and the heart attack is their first sign of disease. Think about it... Have you ever had a friend who was feeling great one day, and then they find out they have cancer or have a heart attack the next day? Do you know someone who has diabetes? You know that as long as they are taking a proper quantity of insulin they have no symptoms and feel great. Meanwhile the disease continues to ravage their body over time producing circulatory problems, nerve system disorders, kidney damage, and eventually blind-ness. You can’t wait until symptoms develop before you decide to maintain or regain health... it might be too late!

Which can you improve, your health history or future? The fact is that the health decisions you made last year, or five years ago, contributed to your health or the lack of it today. We can’t go back and change your decisions of years gone by. Honestly ask yourself, are you as healthy today as you were five years ago? Will you be healthier five years from now than you are today? Creating health is not an event, it is a process. The lifestyle changes you make today will contribute to your health in the future. Even though we can’t change the health decisions we made five years ago, if we are committed, we can always change to be healthier in the years to come. The continual process of lifestyle behavior change that leads to optimal health is known as Wellness. It is possible for you to create better health consistently year after year, it’s your choice. My wish is for you to live your life to its fullest and improve the quality of your life by creating Wellness naturally.

Where does Health come from?Health comes from within. You were born to be healthy. Your nervous system controls the function of every cell, tissue, organ, and gland in the body. The catch is, in order to be 100% healthy, your body must be free from nervous system interfer-ence. The number one cause of interference to the nervous system known by science today is the vertebral subluxation (a misalignment of the spine that puts pressure on a nerve). A simple X-ray of the spine can detect these Vertebral Subluxations. Good Posture, exercise, massage, and regular chiropractic check-ups all help in reducing nerve interference.

You notice the difference at CrossFit Affliction as soon as you walk through the door. Gone are the fancy, sleek machines you find in air conditioned, cookie cutter gyms across South Florida.

In their place is hardcore workout equipment, in a huge warehouse, all designed with the goal of helping almost anyone get into shape. “We are really like an old fashioned type of gym facility,” said Steve Bowser, who co-owns CrossFit Affliction with wife Heidi.

While the facility may be old school, CrossFit is one of the newest and most popular strength and conditioning programs on the market today. With thousands of locations nationwide, CrossFit includes a cross-section of gymnastics, endurance training, and weight lifting, focusing on core strength and overall agility. No two work-outs are the same. Instead, the program provides constantly varied, high-intensity, functional workouts for all fit-ness levels.

Located at 10400 State Road 84 in Davie, CrossFit Affliction was the first CrossFit Facility to open in Broward County in 2007. They also have a separate 6,000 square foot location in downtown Fort Lauderdale and their experience has helped them to become the premier CrossFit facility in Broward County. They specialize in strength, power, and endur-ance training and also have an endurance team along with a USA Weightlifting Team.

While their client base includes pro athletes, national high school champs, Navy SEALS, firefight-ers and SWAT team members, Bowser is quick to point out CrossFit is ideal for people of any fitness level or age, stay-at-home moms and grandparents are no exception. “Our unique program is designed for all levels of athlete.  No one is too in shape or out of shape to participate,” said Heidi.

CrossFit Affliction is based in a 4,200 square foot facility, featuring York weight lifting and glute-ham equipment, colored bumper-plates, Concept II rowing machines, a full complement of kettle bells, ab-mats, and metabolic conditioning equipment. Trained and certified staff members are on hand to help members through the workouts which engage different skills on different days, and are run against the clock. “You are timed which gives you a little more incentive to work harder,” Heidi explained. Everyone follows the same routine on a given day which helps build one of the most important aspects of CrossFit; teamwork. “There is a real sense of community because everyone

is trying to complete the same thing,” said Steve.

All new members are put through the On Ramp Course, a 2-day program that helps determine their level of fitness. It is a required program that not only provides an assessment, but also a crash course on all movements, including Olympic lifts, barbell movements, Kettle bell training, basic gymnastics, running methods, nutrition, and more.   Once the On ramp sessions are complete, new members can join the class. A baseline workout is completed

every 3 months to measure progress. “With CrossFit, members will notice a difference in two weeks,” said Steve.

The program is intense, and not easy, but the results are well worth the effort, according to Steve. “You have to be 100% committed to hard work and dedication toward your fitness goals.   If you want an improved lifestyle and overall better fitness and health, call us to set up an appoint-ment,” he said.  Their trainers hold a large variety of certifications includ-ing:  CrossFit Level 1, Coaches Prep for Level 2, Olympic Weightlifting, Barbell, Kettle bell, Football, Running and Endurance, Nutrition, POSE Running, Movement and Mobility, Rowing, USA Olympic Weightlifting Sports Performance Coach, with several more to come.

Both Steve and Heidi bring impressive credentials to CrossFit Affliction. Steve has a strong sports background, including football, wrestling, track, body building, kickboxing, and power lifting. His experience with the associated training programs has given him a well rounded fitness resume. Heidi’s background includes body building shows, power lifting competitions, and law enforcement, where a func-tional level of fitness allows you to properly react to potentially dangerous situations. Power lift-ing taught her the importance

of proper form, which is critical to the Olympic lifting section of the CrossFit system, while preparation for body building competitions taught her the effect that long term nutritional decisions and dietary programs have.

At CrossFit Affliction, anyone can improve their fitness for as little as $8 per session. “Why pay a personal trainer $45-$50 per hour, when you can group train for much less,” said Steve.

If you are ready to get into shape, call CrossFit for an appointment to come check out their facility.

CrossFit Affliction is located at 10400 State Road 84, #103, in Davie. You can phone them at 954-846-8666 or email them at [email protected].

They are also online at http://www.crossfitaffliction.com. The Bowser’s also have another CrossFit location at 525 NW 1 Avenue in Fort Lauderdale. You can phone them at 954-789-7131 or visit them online at www.crossfitftlauderdale.com

HCG Waist Management is helping patients turn their bodies into fat burning machines. They look and feel better by losing weight the fast and

easy way. Unlike many traditional diets, the diet is medically supervised, does not require patients to exercise and provides a plan to keep off the weight for the long term. Clients can lose up to 30 pounds in 30 days, without feeling hungry.

Bart K. Gershenbaum D.O. and James O’Connor, PA-C, MPH opened the office earlier this year after experiencing the results of the diet first hand. Dr. Gershenbaum worked as an emergency room physician for over 25 years and learned about the diet soon after he had quadruple bypass open heart surgery. “Image is important, but health is everything,” said Dr. Gershenbaum. “The HCG protocol helped me lose 30 pounds in one month with very little effort. I now have more energy and feel great. My cholesterol and triglyceride levels have improved dramatically. My weight has always been difficult to maintain, but since the HCG diet it has stayed off.” O’Connor worked in the emergency room with Dr. Gershenbaum. When he saw the life changing effects of the diet he decided to try it himself. He lost 45 pounds in only two months. “When I saw how quickly I was losing weight, I was motivated to keep going,” said O’Connor. “I feel great, have more energy and sleep better. The diet really works!”

The medically supervised program helps dieters modify their relationship with food and eating to help ensure it is the last diet they will ever need to do. The scientific protocol for the HCG diet was discovered almost 60 years ago by the late Dr A.T.W. Simeons, a British endocrinologist. Clients follow a very specific low calorie diet that is made up

of real food, proteins, fruits and vegetables. They also use a small dose of HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin), a natural complex amino-peptide protein found in both men and women that can only be prescribed by a doctor.

The HCG helps the body break down its “abnormal” fat storage and sculpts it while they lose weight. Clients keep their desired lean muscle mass, and only lose the unsightly fat. As a result, they lose not only pounds but an equal amount of inches. They are also able to maintain a low calorie diet without suffering headaches, irritability or weakness, which are so commonly seen during most other weight loss diets or programs. Their bodies are satis-

fied with smaller, healthier portions, and are naturally retrained to maintain a new set point for their weight

Many of HCG Waist Management’s patients are also good candidates for Bioidentical Hormone Therapy. “Once men and women reach a certain age, they have hormonal deficiencies that need to be corrected if they want to feel like they did when they were younger,” said Dr. Gershenbaum. “The therapy also protects them from certain medical conditions that are common with aging, including cardiovascular diseases, elevated cholesterol and osteoporosis.”

HCG Waist Management is conveniently located in Davie, at 7740 Nova Drive, Suite B-4, just south of I-595 and one block east of University Drive. For information, call 954-634-DIET (3438), visit www.HCGWaistManagement.com or send an email to [email protected].

More people are exercising and dieting to improve their physical well-being and body image. However, despite the most valiant efforts and best intentions, diet

and exercise may not be enough to achieve the desired outcome of a flat stomach nor be able to tighten loose, excess skin and fat which can result from weight loss, pregnancy and the natural aging process.

Reshaping the abdomen and waist through an abdominoplasty or “tummy tuck” may be the solution for your protruding abdomen. This procedure removes excess skin and fat and restores weakened or separated muscles creating an abdominal profile that is smoother and firmer. In 2009, 130,000 tummy tucks were performed in the United States.

There are a number of important variables that determine whether a patient is a candidate for an abdomi-noplasty. For any plastic surgical procedure to be a complete success, medical and psychological fitness for surgery is a prerequisite. The appropriate patient typically is close to their ideal body weight with anatomic fea-tures that may be improved surgically, including loose skin, excess fat, and weak-ened abdominal muscles. The distribution of fat is one determinant of the improve-ment a patient will have from a tummy tuck. Fat in the superficial tissue is the type that is possible to pinch. This superficial fat may be removed through excision (tummy tuck) or aspiration (liposuction). If skin laxity or looseness is significant, the skin and fat should be removed with a tummy tuck. If the skin elasticity is adequate; however, the superficial fat may be removed through liposuction alone. Liposuction may flat-ten the abdomen, but it will not tighten the skin significantly.

In addition to the superficial layers, fat is also distributed in the deep layers sur-rounding the internal organs. This fat may be reduced only through diet and exercise. Patients who have firm, distended abdomens typically have significant amounts of deep fat. Excess deep fat makes it difficult to tighten the abdominal wall muscles during a tummy tuck. Patients who have soft, distended abdomens frequently have lax muscles or a separation of rectus muscle in the midline known as diastasis. This is common after multiple pregnancies making it a great procedure for ‘Mommy Makeovers’ or significant weight loss patients.

The tummy tuck operation can be performed as an out-patient or in-patient proce-dure in a hospital, ambulatory surgery center or a certified surgeon’s office operating facility, depending on the patient’s age, co-existing medical conditions, and extent of the procedure. It usually is done under general anesthesia under the direct supervision of a certified anesthesia provider. A full tummy tuck requires making an incision low along the lower abdominal skin crease, just above the pubic area. The length of the incision is determined by the degree of abdominal skin laxity and excess.

When patients have excess skin that extends to the lateral hips and lower back or buttocks, an extended or circumferential abdominoplasty may be necessary. For most patients the resultant incision is well hidden within underwear and bathing suit lines. The procedure usually takes 2 to 3 hours for a full and 1 to 2 hours for a mini-abdom-inoplasty. Patients should prepare to rest for one to two weeks after their procedure.

Changing or improving your appearance through cosmetic surgery is a highly per-sonal decision. We encourage you to begin your journey to improved confidence with a private consultation. Schedule your appointment today by calling 954-659-7760.

It is a Mediterranean tradition for family and friends to get together to share small dishes called

‘Mazzas’ before they indulge in their entrees. At Mazza in Pembroke Pines, guests can experience this tradition and enjoy great food without leaving the neighborhood. The family-friendly is conveniently located at 15749 Pines Blvd., just west of I-75.

Faris Bushnaq opened Mazza in 2007 to share his passion for food and dining with others. The restaurant has a warm, relaxing atmosphere and the food is bursting with flavor. The Greek and Lebanese dishes are cooked in olive oil and contain fresh vegetables, an array of exotic spices, meats that are marinated overnight in Mediterranean juices and other high quality ingredients. Many of the recipes have been passed down through the generations. “We want our guests to leave the restaurant feeling happy, satisfied and with smiles on their faces,” said Faris. And they do.

Mazza has developed a very loyal clientele. Some of its guests come to try Mediterranean food for the first time and others are connoisseurs. Once they experience the restaurant’s quality food and fun atmosphere, they are eager to return. Guests are not the only ones who praise the restaurant. Mazza is Zagat Rated and has received rave reviews from online critics. It recently won opentable.com’s 2011 Diner’s Choice Awards in three categories: Ft. Lauderdale Neighborhood Gem, Ft. Lauderdale Good for Groups and one of Southeast Florida’s Top Mediterranean Restaurants.

Most guests start by ordering an assort-ment of traditional appetizers to share. This is also a great way to sample the menu. Some of the most popular are the Drunken Halloumi (Cypriot Halloumi cheese that is lightly sautéed in ouzo and olive oil and served with tomatoes in a special Toom garlic sauce); Grilled Octopus (marinated in Mediterranean spices and drizzled with olive oil, garlic and fresh lemon juice) and of course the Hummus (a blend of chick peas, Tahini

sesame paste, fresh lemon juice and garlic), which Mazza may soon begin selling in stores. Mazza also offers 10 different salads. Most are intended as appetizers and include favorites like Tabouleh (chopped parsley, cracked wheat, tomatoes and fresh mint tossed in extra virgin olive oil, fresh lemon and pomegranate molasses vinaigrette) and Shaved Pear (field greens, shaved pear, candied walnuts and warm goat cheese tossed in a Poppy Seed dressing).

The restaurant offers a large selection of entrees that include traditional Mediterranean dishes, as well as Petit Filet Mignon, Cowboy Steak, Grilled Salmon, Whole Fish, Grilled Chicken, Pasta and more. Many order one of the Signature Kabobs made with seven different types of meats, seafood and vegetable or something from the Rotisserie

(Lamb Gyro, Chicken or Steak Shawarma). Other traditional favorites include the Lamb Chops (perfectly marinated overnight in Mazza’s aromatic seven spice marinade), Grilled Skirt Steak (top grade outside skirt steak marinated in citrus juices and grilled on an open flame) and the Med Burger (handcrafted patty perfectly seasoned, stuffed with goat cheese and topped with roasted tomato and lettuce). Kids can chose from a large selection of items that range in price from $4.95 to $5.95 and include two sides.

The serving sizes are generous and many leave with leftovers to enjoy at home. Most, however, still manage to find room for desserts like Ashta (Greek phyllo pastry stuffed with a creamy filling, then topped with orange blossom syrup, rose water and topped with pistachios), Baklava (a rich, sweet pastry made of layers of Greek phyllo pastry filled with chopped nuts and sweetened with honey) and the Pistachio Ice Cream (served in a toasted almond basket with stuffed dessert dates).

Most guests like to enjoy a glass of wine or beer with their meal. The restaurant offers wine by the glass or bottle and sells bottles of wine for only $10, Sun. to Thurs. It also sells a wide variety of beer, including some from Lebanon and Greece. On Fri. and Sat. nights, from 8 to 9 p.m., guests can get a taste of Mediterranean culture as they watch a traditional belly dancing show complete with fire eating. The free show

is a treat for all ages. Many of Mazza’s guests want to experience the restaurant’s cuisine

at the office or at an event. Mazza offers a Corporate Catering Menu with a variety of options for $12 per person, including Chicken Kabob, Greek Salad and Dessert. The catering menu is very popular with medical offices in the area that recognize that Mediterranean cuisine is considered among the healthiest in the world, since it incorporates olive oil, nuts and seafood. Mazza also has a Party Platter Menu for birthdays, weddings and other special events. It contains all of the items from the regular menu in sizes suitable for parties as small as

6 or as large as several hundred. Mazza offers full catering and can supply everything for the party, including the food, tables, belly dancers and more.

Faris appreciates all of the support he gets from his guests and does his part to give back to the community. He participates in school fundraisers and has worked with the Red Cross, Transplant Foundation and many other charities. “We are so grateful to all of the people who dine in our restaurant and we feel it is our responsibility to give back.”

Mazza is open Mon. to Thurs, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Fri., from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Sat., from 11:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.; and Sun., from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. For infor-mation, call 954-436-9997 or visit www.mazzarestaurant.com.
