Krah AG is a German machine manufacturer with over 35 years of experience in the design, development and construction of production plants for large diameter pipes. The machine is equipped with all necessary components to produce pipes of different sizes and stiff-nesses using different profiles mentioned on the following pages. Pipes are extruded by winding method, where a profile is wounded around a collapsible steel mandrel. The profile can be solid wall or structured wall based on the application.

The resin (PE or PP) is melted in the main extruder (1) (mostly black material to provide the required UV-resistance of the pipe) and in the co-extruder (2) (mostly yellow material to provide the required bright, inspection friendly inside surface). In the die head (3) the material flow of the main extruder is divided into two streams, one stream for each of the double dies. The ratio between the two dies is adjusted by the program. In the first die head the black material (from the main extruder) will be merged with the yellow material (from the co-extruder) and the result will be a solid two-colored band for the waterway of the pipe.

TYPES OF PIPE PROFILES
An important consideration for the buried pipe design is the wall thickness of the pipe to sustain high loads if necessary, which results in heavy, expensive pipes, which had its own implications in production, installation etc.
The concept of a profile pipe was developed to use the pipes for such application using the software to prepare calculations for the design of the profile to bear the load during the installation. The addition of the profile gives the pipe a significantly higher moment of inertia thereby allowing the pipe to sustain a higher load. Thus using the same raw materials and the same amount of inertia, a regular solid wall pipe would weigh up to three times more than the profile pipe.
Krah profile pipes have been developed taking into account various factors, such as, properties of the raw materials, existing production procedures and wide range of applications. The result has been the development of different types of profiles such as, PR, SP, ST, SQ, VW and CPR. These profiles meet the stringent requirements stipulated in applicable standards as listed below.
Such pipes are available in various sizes and wall configurations for varied applications, as listed below.
By using profiled pipes, we can make a savings up to 65% in weight compared to equivalent solid wall pipes with the same ring stiffness.
Three types of profile pipes are manufactured depending upon the field of application and the purpose/usage of the pipes. These are discussed below:

PIPING DESIGN CALCULATIONSThe gravity pipes are designed based on the special software considering the various aspects like depth, soil conditions, water table for the structural integrity of the pipe which is buried for a longer sustainability.
Pipes are connected using butt fusion, electro-fusion, mechanical jointing etc. determined on the basis of field of application. All our pipes are with a socket and spigot for electro-fusion jointing for a better water tightness and ease of installation.

WELDING METHODS
ELECTRO-FUSION WELDING METHOD
The pipes connection, including bell (socket) and spigot connection, is supplemented by electro-fusion welding over the outer and inner circumference of the pipe. Special alloy welding electrodes used for electro-fusion welding are inserted into the bell to prevent deformation and the welding leads are left free to enable the welding operation under any working conditions. The pipe sizes, suitable for electro-fusion welding, range from ID 300 mm to 4000 mm.
A welding wire which is included in the socket or spigot is heated with the help of a special welding device whereby the two pipe ends (the socket and the spigot) are jointed together. The electro fusion jointing technique is a very favorable, simple and secure method to install pipes in even very narrow trenches in a short time.
BUTT FUSION JOINTS
Depending on the application and the conditions at the site the pipes and fittings can also be jointed with the help of a butt welding machine. This kind of jointing method can be recommended for pipes and fittings with a maximum wall thickness of 150mm and with diameters from DN/ID 300mm to DN/ID 2500mm. The welding is done according to DVS 2207 part 1.

MECHANICAL CONNECTION
The pipes and fittings are jointed with the help of a steel flange and a rubber gasket. Depending on the type of pipe the flange adapters are completely manufactured with the pipe, or the flanges are available as separate fitting. This kind of jointing method is mostly used for open sea discharge application and for tank connections. The greatest advantage of this connection is the facility of disjointing.
GASKET CONNECTION
Our system has solid plain socket and spigot, with an integrated EPDM sealing with a minimum wall thicknesses of the spigot are according to EN13476-3 table 7 and in addition the ring stiffness of the socket along with the ring stiffness of the spigot is higher than the ring stiffness of the pipe.

PIPE IN TRENCHES – Flexibility is an advantage for buried pipes
The load on a rigid pipe is borne primarily by the inherent strength of the pipe material and when this load exceeds a limiting value, the pipe breaks. Flexible pipes, on the other hand, deflect under load, and to a high degree without fracture. The level of deflection reached by a buried pipe depends on the properties of the surrounding material, compaction and, to a much less extent, on the stiffness of the pipe.
SURROUNDING MATERIAL RING STIFFNESS: The choice of pipe ring stiffness shall be made either according to the standard EN 1046 or on the basis of static calculation in accordance with the standard ATV 127 guidelines of German Association for Water, Wastewater and Waste, or on the basis of previous experience. If such prior experience is not available then the minimum stiffness required shall be selected from tables, which are prepared to cover the following conditions:
<> Non-traffic areas with depths cover between 1 m and 6m
<> Traffic areas with depths cover between 1 m and 6m

METHODS AND DEGREE OF COMPACTION: The degree of compaction can be varied by using different type of equipment and by varying the numbers of layers. The degree of compaction is expressed in Standard Proctor Densities (SPD) for the three classes of compaction W, M and N for groups of materials classified in conformance with the soil group table.
HDPE PIPE STORAGE AND TRANSPORTATION: Since HDPE pipes are flexible in nature, care has to be exercised in their storage and transportation. Impact loads provide high risk in causing damage as opposed to falling on the ground or rolling over. Following precautions need to be observed during this process.

Conventional piping systems, for sanitary sewer projects, experience problems mainly in the manholes area. Manholes are required at several points in the piping system, including for inspection, ventilation, controlling and pipe turning points within the sanitary sewer system. These manholes can be produced totally from HDPE along with the relevant top cover and recesses, along with the possibility of concrete tops. HDPE top cover systems of the manholes and the flues are telescopic and provide the advantage of elevating the manhole covers at the final level of the road surface, if necessary during road construction.
Internal walls of the manholes can be produced in inspection friendly colors and additional post installation inspection convenience can be provided during fabrication process through auxiliary equipment such as ladder, inspection steps and canals among others.
Two types of manhole designs exist in the Krah piping system:
a) Straight passage manholes
b) Tangential Manholes
Straight passage manholes
These manholes are designed for use within pipe turning points with several inlet and outlet branch connections. HDPE is used to construct the bottom of the manhole and is a welded construction therefore it is leak proof. Steps, canals on the bottom plate and access steps can be constructed, though it is not recommended.

Tangential Manholes
These manholes are practical and cost effective for applications requiring pipe sizes with ID 800mm and above. Here, the manhole is installed tangential to the center of the pipe line. Steps, telescopic HDPE or concrete cover are a possibility within the system. This application is available both on straight pipe runs and turning points.
HOUSE CONNECTION
The house connection fittings are developed to ensure reliable and practical house connection effluent water connections. Standard fittings sizes range from 160 mm to 200 mm. There is no house connection fitting adapters are a completely independent component, which are used for providing connection points at the discharge point of the house connection effluent water.
House connection fitting components
The quickest and most reliable method for installation of house connection fittings is to open a hole in the header pipe, of diameter equal to the outside diameter of the branch pipe, with the help of a drilling machine and then drilling the fastening points on the pipes to complete the connection.
Components include:
HDPE house connection adapter, stainless steel flange, stainless steel mounting plate, EPDM rubber gasket and flange fastening clips.
LANDFILL DRAINAGE SYSTEMS
The huge mountains of solid waste garbage of the household disposal are a phenomenon specific to the contemporary industrialized societies undergoing rapid development of industry and high increase in population. The huge garbage wastes are not only a danger to human health, ground water pollution is also at risk.
The most reliable solution accepted throughout contemporary societies is disposing the waste solids within the waste disposal areas, collecting and treating the leaking effluent waters, disposing or recovering the generated methane gases within power plants. The appearance pollution is further eliminated by covering the waste disposal areas with the water tight soil and vegetation to be provided on the soil covered on top of the area thus insulated.
The solid wastes include many chemical substances, in addition to the formation of many other chemicals during decomposition of the waste. The process occurs over many years. Therefore, HDPE is ideal for resisting the load imposed on the heavy garbage wastes and the chemicals formed by decomposition.

TANKS
HDPE tanks, of types – cylindrical, vertical and horizontal, can be produced from pipes ranging with ID of 300mm to 4000mm.
The tanks are available with various types of inlet and outlet nozzle connections, covers, valves etc. Standard capacities of the tanks range from 2000 to 75000 liters.
Raw material properties of HDPE allow for high resistance to chemicals, suitability for storage of food items, UV stabilized for protection etc.
The internal and external surfaces are smooth and inspection friendly colors are available. PP can also be used to manufacture tanks for indoor applications.
Major fields of application are Water storage (indoor tanks), Storage of food items, industrial chemicals, waste disposal items & mineral oils, water treatment plant, acid tanks and for other chemicals among others.

LINED PIPES
Gravity, sanitary and storm sewer lines are the most common type of underground infrastructure
system installed by micro tunneling or so called pipe jacking operation. The pipes used for jacking
in non pressure applications are most often lined with GRP, uPVC and HDPE sheets. All these pipe
materials have a substantial installation history in sewer applications. But these methods are prone
to failure due to disbanding of the liners used. HDPE profiled pipes are preferred materials for lining
instead of HDPE sheets due to their excellent bonding properties with concrete. Furthermore, in
case of cracks in the concrete wall, the pipes used for lining purposes will hold. The jacking concrete
pipes lined with HDPE profiled pipes are manufactured according to DIN 4032 / DIN 4035 with high
quality guideline requirements. The jacking pipes are used for sewage and drainage piping system.
RE-LINING
Infrastructure related construction is normally difficult and time consuming. During the
construction, unexpected occurrences are inevitable. Quite often, the installation of the pipes
occurs in narrow and confined areas where, excavation operations are impractical. Such problems
are usually encountered during renovation works performed within settlement areas, which
includes demolishing existing buildings making way for new construction. The infrastructure may
be needed to be totally replaced due to insufficient capacity, blockages, collapsing etc.
In such cases, HDPE profiled pipes are inserted into the existing piping systems via long or short
pipes re-lining method. Since the friction losses of HDPE pipes are much lower than conventional
concrete pipes, the existing concrete piping systems can be utilized via re-lining of profiled pipes,
thus the renewal of infrastructure can be accomplished without any excavation operations.
During re-lining process, the HDPE pipes are inserted into the existing piping via excavation down
to the beginning of the existing pipe run. The profiled pipes are further driven via continuous driving
and welding the pipes into one another. The most important factor to have reliable operation of
the system over prolonged service life is to perform suitable lining operation by injecting concrete
into the gap between the profiled pipes and the existing concrete pipes, upon completion of the
installation of HDPE profiled pipes.

High Density Polyethylene used in the manufacture of Pressure Pipes is a black, bimodal, high density polyethylene compound classified as an MRS 10.0 material (PE100) produced by using advanced technologies. Well dispersed carbon black gives it outstanding UV resistance. It is recommended for pressure pipe systems in the applications field of drinking water and natural gas, pressure sewerage, relining, sea outfall and industrial. It can be processed for a whole range of diameters, with special focus on the production of larger diameter, thick wall pipe,. It also shows excellent resistance to rapid crack propagation and slow crack growth. The raw material is not classified as dangerous preparation. It is suitable for recycling using modern methods of shredding and cleaning. Presently, we produce 400mm – SDR 11 suitable for 16 bar.

BUTT FUSION WELDING METHOD
The pipes are jointed with the help of a heating element butt welding machine, which are brought together under pressure – this softens the ends of the pipe. The heater plate is then removed and the pipes brought together again and allowed to cool under pressure. This results in a high tensile, leak-tight homogenous joint. The latest machines are fitted with an automatic recording unit, which can set the actual welding parameters and also provide data retrieval facilities for each welding operation.
The ends of the pipes and fittings are butt-welded. This kind of jointing method is only recommended for pipes and fittings with a maximum wall thickness of 150mm and with diameters from DN/ID 300mm to DN/ID 2500mm. The welding has to be done according to DVS 2207 part 1.
ELECTRO-FUSION WELDING METHOD
This type of jointing method is used for both the jointing of pipes to each other and also for pipes to fittings. The ends are fitted with a heating element, inserted during the manufacturing process, and an electric charge is passed through this wire. The element is heated to a predetermined temperature, which causes the polyethylene to melt and form a high tensile, leak tight joint. Control boxes in the machine are designed to set time and power requirements automatically for each different fitting.
FLANGE JOINTS
Flange joints are made by welding a “stub end” to a piece of pipe and by using “loose flanges” can be supplied in different materials with different surface coatings. The finished joint however has a low tensile strength compared to the butt fusion and electro fusion joints.
