Dreams Training Centre (DTC) Transform lives of disadvantaged youth in Cambodia

Page 2: Dreams Training Centre - Child's Dream Foundation

Cambodia remains one of Asia’s poorest countries and lags behind its neighbours in broader

development indicators. The gap continues to widen as Cambodia performs poorly on all

three indicators on the Aggregated Human Development Index (health, education, and

income). Development is impeded by entrenched corruption, restricted educational

opportunities, large income disparities, and meagre job prospects.

In Siem Reap Province, however, prospects for development appear more promising. As

Cambodia’s tourist hub, the Northwestern city serves as the resort destination that offers

over 50% of tourism related jobs. Despite great economic boosts, social mobility is minimal,

and the poor are often excluded from educational and social opportunities that can

improve their welfare and well-being. The majority of youth live in extreme poverty

(earning below $2 per day) being victims to exploitative occupations under sweat factories,

bonded labour, human trafficking. As a result, their status is below consideration for

symmetry employment as they are deemed by employers as under-skilled.

Feeding Dreams Cambodia (FDC) is a

nationally-registered NGO that has been

operating in Siem Reap since 2012. FDC

serves as a Community School, offering free

educational facility and daily meals for 800

impoverished youth.

In 2016, FDC established a vocational

hospitality training school - the Dreams

Training Centre (DTC), which offers a

comprehensive curriculum of hospitality

training and soft skills education. The goal of

the project is to improve the students’ life-

prospects by promoting their employability

and personal development.

DTC Programme offers a 12-month curriculum at the FDC school campus, starting with a 6-

month intensive training with a focus on one of the following departments:

Housekeeping / Room Service

Guest Services / Front Office

Food and Beverage

The 6-month course also encompasses other technical training and soft skills development

namely self-value, compassion, financial literacy, time management, gender equality, sex

education, negotiation and leadership skills.

The intensive employability programme matches and places each student afterwards in a

4-month internship in a high-end hotel in Siem Reap to gain experience.

The internship is followed by 2 months of further training and support at the Centre whilst

employment is being sorted for each student.

The academic year of DTC runs from July to June the following year.

Not only do the graduates achieve economic independence, but their entire families’

lifestyle drastically improves. Through the direct impact on 60 beneficiaries annually, it is

estimated that an additional 300 people benefit indirectly from the students’

accreditation and new sources of income.
