Software Distribution

• Open Source: MPEG Insight Project (MIP). MIP is a set of Matlab m-files to process MPEG traces. It allows MPEG scene boundaries determi-nation based on the GOP sizes. It also allows for dynamic bandwidth allo-cation according to the characteristics of the scene and a target loss ratio.http://sourceforge.net/projects/mip/

• WUCLP: Waterloo User Controlled Lightpaths. WUCLP is a distributedapplication that allows a user to manage a set of lightpaths he/she owns.The interaction with the software can be done either through a web-basedinterface or through a GRID interface. Among other things, the user is ableto establish lightpaths, lease, partion and tear them down. This is done in asecure environment and independently of the underlying equipment. A lifeversion of WUCLP is running on CANARIE’s Canada-wide optical network.I was the project coordinator and have made significant contribution to thedesign and development of the WUCLP software. http://uclp.uwaterloo.ca/

• 2009-2012 : Member of the IT Committee: participated in several meetingabout the IT at Khalifa University. In particular evaluated the proposals fromseveral companies who responded to the RFP for IT Infrastructure Auditinitiated by Khalifa University.

• 2010-2011: Member of the External Relation Committee of the StrategicPlanning initiative: participated into preparing a report and presentationabout the strategic goals; objectives; key productivity factors and key en-ablers regarding the University external relations and marketing.

• 2006-2009: Chairman of the Department of Computer Science. My dutiesinvolved the following:

– Being responsible for the academic, and administrative affairs of thedepartment;

– Aligning the computer science programs (Bachelor and Diploma) withthe recommendations of the ACM and IEEE in the Computing Curric-ula 2001 Computer Science Report (http://www.sigcse.org/cc2001/)

– Ensuring the proper teaching of the programs of study and preparingthe teaching schedule in consultation with voting faculty members;

– Appointing academic advisors to students majoring in the department;

– Preparing course description and related material for the university cat-alogue;

– Presenting to the dean, in accordance with established university pro-cedures, recommendations on all matters pertaining to appointments,reappointments or non-reappointments, promotions, leaves of absence,and advancement in remuneration of academic personnel;


– Preparing the annual and research reports of the department for trans-mission to the dean;

– Appointing ad-hoc committees as may be deemed necessary;

– Recommending to the dean the appointment of an acting chairpersonduring my absence; and

– Preparing and submitting to the dean recommendations on library ac-quisitions, software and other learning resources necessary for the de-partment.

• 2005-2009: Member of the University Research Board. The mission of theUniversity Research Board (URB) is to foster and improve the research en-vironment at the University. The URB will formulate policies and guidelinesfor the allocation of funds for Research and Faculty Development. It con-siders policies to be followed in seeking support for grants from externalagencies, and it acts in an advisory capacity to the Vice Chancellor in theimplementation of policies pertaining to allocation of grants for Researchand Faculty Development. It also edits and publishes the Research Report ofthe University every two years.

• 2006-2009: Member of the Academic Advisory Committee.

• 2006-2009: Member of the Administrative Committee.

• 2007: Member of the Ad hoc IT Review Committee. The tasks of this com-mittee involved the following:

– Review of the network system at DU: strengths and weaknesses

– Review of the Intranet and Internet status: capacity, speed, efficiency,etc

– Review of DU web site features

– Review of the IT staff: their qualifications, functions, and performance

– And other relevant IT issues that are deemed important to address.

The committee assessed the then current situation and recommended waysof improvement to reach maximum efficiency and best performance.
