Hildra Marx, Trollup’s granddaughter writes to Sefapane Private Game Tours:

This is just a few words of thanks for a wonderful day enjoyed by Oupa Attie on his 80th birthday.

‘You all went out of your way to make this a day to remember.

‘I would suggest this tour

to anyone who wants to spoil someone special.

Sammy Mchabe, our guide, was such a delightful guide, helpful, well mannered and friendly.

‘He made sure that we saw many animals as possible, even lions.

‘We also shared our trip with an Italian couple.

We were spoiled to a lovely breakfast, brunch and lunch. Well done and thank you for everything.

FOSKOR LADIES: Foskor honoured the Secretary’s Day by taking all secretaries to lunch at Sefapane Lodge last Tuesday.

Secretaries get honoured

was.

Inwoners gesels lekker saam

Clinix Phalaborwa Private Hospital celebrated National Pharmacy Week on September 1-8.

The spotlight was on the importance of antibiotics and their correct application. The celebrations were focused on the theme ‘use antibiotics wisely’ and the aim is to train nurses and pharmacy staff on the topic.

A pharmacist at the hospital, Hlulani Ngobeni educated the public on the importance of using antibiotics and other tablets correctly on the local radio.

She also offered career guidance to learners at Vuxeni High School. ‘Patients should never

share tablets even if you might think that you suffer from the same illness, always consult to get your own treatment,’ said Ngobeni.

Learners from Relebogile High School were taken on a tour around the hospital and pharmacy.

Meanwhile the hospital team donated ten blankets to elderly people at Lethabong old age home in Namakgale. The hospital marketing manager, Virnicia Mathebula said patients who were at the hospital during pharmacy week received gifts. ‘Everything was made possible through the generous contributions of pharmaceutical companies such as Ranbaxy, Specpharm, S buys, Fresenius Kabi and Supra healthcare,’ said Mathebula.

The hospital left a smile on many people’s faces during the Pharmacy Week.

MEC for the Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (LEDET) , Seaparo Sekoati said congradulated the winners and urged them to double their efforts so that they can win the national awards to take place later this year.

“Let me wish all tourism products and individuals that showed entrepreneurial courage by

participating in these awards but to also congratulate all the provincial winners who will be proceeding to the National Tourism Lilizela Awards where they will compete with winners from other provinces,” said Sekoati.

Orion Makgoebaskloof Hotel scooped the best three stars hotel in the province award, Fusion Boutique Hotel won the best fi ve stars hotel title, Jack Safari Lodge was awarded the best fi ve stars lodge whilst Forever Resort Blyde Canyon Chalets was announced as the best three stars self-catering shared vacation.

The launch happens against the backdrop of successful National media launch which was presided over by newly appointed minister of Tourism, Derek Henekom, who also announced Limpopo as the 2015 host for Tourism Month celebrations. Its purpose is to foster awareness amongst the global community of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural and political and economic value.

Sekoati said: ‘this resonates very well with the situation in our province as twenty years into democracy, underdevelopment in our communities still remains a huge challenge.’ He urged and encourage people to take short breaks in support of domestic tourism to boost the economy of the province but to also re-energize themselves as touring has benefi ts.

‘Tourism brings great memories, quality time with loved ones, well deserved escapes from dull routines, and a chance to experience new places, new people and new things,’ added Sekoati. He further said that currently the province, amongst other has partnered with National Department of Tourism to empower 35 entrepreneurs in the catering industry on food safety.

Rocking for Rhinos festival which is heading into the third year continues to merge conservation, entertainment and the public with one united aim which is to save the rhino in a unique and innovative way. Each person’s ticket is their donation to save the rhino. This year the team will have around 21 bands and 5 DJ’s performing on 2 stages at the festival, they will have a few international acts from Mozambique and Namibia as well. The festival will run from the September 26-28 which was chosen because of the proximity to World Rhino Day on September 22 and South African Heritage Day on the 24th. It will take place at Franklyn Park on the outskirts of Hoedspruit, which provides ample space for staging, exhibition areas, food & beverage areas, as well accommodation in the form of camping zones. It is a secure, closed venue which will be dedicated to the festival for the duration of the event. Take a stand today and support the team in their quest to make a difference so that future generations will

have the privilege of seeing these incredible animals alive, wild and in their natural environment. Rocking for Rhinos was formed in January 2012 with extremely motivated, passionate and dedicated people, united by one fundamental issue, the now critical plight of the disappearing rhino population and the war that must be waged against the poachers and ring leaders that are the direct cause of the demise of this gentle creature. Rocking for Rhinos is a registered Non-Profi t Organisation (NPO number 137-976) working towards not only the abolishment of rhino poaching, but also the protection and management of the remaining rhino population. Tickets are available through Computicket with day pass for Friday, Saturday and Sunday R100 or a full weekend pass, Friday, Saturday and Sunday Includes camping cost R270 and children under 12 will have free entrance. For more information please go to their website on: www.rockingforrhinos.org or follow them on their facebook page Rocking for Rhinos.

39 Lekkerbreek St, Phalaborwa

Your child + Our commitment = Success

I think there are a lot of contributing factors to the success we are experiencing with regard to our son, Daniel, who has been at Edublox, Phalaborwa for 2

The improvement we see in Daniel's reading is tremendous.

Daniel himself is able to tell me that he is now remembering words which previously he did not know, he is aware that his memory is improving. Daniel is growing more confident in his reading and will now venture out loud when he sees new words or lettering when we are out and about.

Daniel is also wanting to read more, because it is now something that he can do. He asks to read in bed before falling asleep at night. Daniel used to spell every word out, now he reads and only spells when he is unsure. The team of support which Daniel has is very dedicated. Not only his teacher at school, Anel, who is very professional but is very caring, considerate and very tuned into the feelings Daniel has. How he is supported and is conscious of careful working with, those feelings. Her knowledge of what she experienced when teaching Daniel, assessing Daniel, provided us with guidance that is delivering the fruit we are picking today. It is about being given directions, not via a long winded possible correct road with many delays, put to be pointed in the right direction. It is this wisdom along with her professionalism which has assisted us greatly.

Daniel's Ouma does homework with him every day, Oupa takes Daniel to Edublox, this Ouma and Oupa team are dedicated to helping Daniel every afternoon. Doing reading, spelling, worksheets, extra reading and practice practice practice. Our family is greatly blessed with our Ouma and Oupa. Daniel is an only child, at home our world revolves around Daniel in a big way.

We are blessed to be able to have books to read, the internet to surf and DSTV to watch. Daniel is a clever boy with an inquisitive mind, who is eager to hear about things, see things, investigate things. To try to understand as a parent, why your child is seemingly so intelligent but cannot read, is a mind boggling matter. Gavin and I can see the improvement Edublox has made. But what is Edublox? It provides a methodology by which you can improve your memory, reading, studying? A business, a place of work, source of income? So then any Edublox would be able to do for Daniel what has been done? I attribute Daniel's success at Edublox Phalaborwa to Gene, who she is as a person, her energy, dedication, intellectual and emotional wisdom. Sitting in front of her, having met her a few days prior, not knowing her from a bar of soap, we entrusted her with our pride and joy. That she could say, you have been elsewhere, you have tried other things, but today you are at Edublox and this is where the road ends. All these and the grace of God, have brought us to where we are today. Daniel can read! Better! Improving every day. I encourage every parent who has a child who is struggling or even a child who needs to do a bit better, to try Edublox. You will not be sorry.

Kagisho Choenyane, the director planning and development at Ba Phalaborwa Municipality is one of the youngest professionals in the area.

She said she was not good in mathematics but studied and practiced hard so she can be successful one day. She said she also liked women holding powerful positions in workplaces and wearing helmets. ‘It was

always fascinating seeing woman managing others,’ said Choenyane. She said she was a playful child just like any other child growing up but with the strong support system from her family she reached her goals. ‘I was in the top 20 best learners in tertiary which never happened while I was in high school, I was not a social person, all I wanted was to complete my studies,’ added Choenyane. She advised learners to stay focused and true to themselves.

*A nine year old Nnaniki Mathebula said she wants to be a pilot. She says her favourite subjects are Mathematics and English. ‘I would like to be the fi rst in Phalaborwa, I always

participate in Maths and English competitions at school,’ said Mathebula.

*Sibongile Nhunhu Nkuna is an 18 year old grade 12 learner who wants to study somatology after matric. She says it’s a course that deals with human skin. ‘I love working with people’s skins, making them beautiful and feeling relaxed,’ said Nkuna

SCIENCE EDUCATION OUTREACH SYMPOSIUM: South African Environmental Observati on Network’s (SAEON) aim is to create the next generati on of scienti sts. “Science and math educati on is not as it should be”, stated Tony Swemmer, “It is our aim to help students, teachers and schools to succeed in the scienti fi c fi eld.”

South African Environmental Observation Network’s (SAEON) aim is to create the next generation of scientists.

A science education outreach symposium was held at ‘The Hat & Creek’ on September 3, by SAEON Ndlovu Node, where they not only presented their aim to young scholars, teachers and principals – but also motivated them to believe that South Africa needs more environmental scientists.

Various schools around Phalaborwa were invited to experience the excellent work of four students who have and still engage in science.

Tony Swemmer, manager of SAEON Ndlovu Node, welcomed the guests and described briefl y why more environmental scientists were needed. “Science and math education is not as it should be”, said Swemmer, “it is our aim to help students, teachers and schools to succeed in the scientifi c fi eld”.

He expressed the global crisis’ that the world is facing now, especially in South Africa. “SAEON wants to equip the children with the skills and knowledge to face any ecological crisis in the future”, he said.

Sibongile Mokoena, Coordinator Science Education Outreach, explained more about SAEON itself. The three pillars of SAEON are how they will reach out to equip these skills; science observations, data management and education outreach.

The SAEON Education Outreach Program seeks to attract, expose and encourage 14-17 year old students to pursue science careers at higher education institutions. By interacting with scientist and researchers, learners get a hands-on experience of scientifi c research in

environmental monitoring and observation. The Program is coordinated by the National Offi ce and implemented by the Nodes. The target groups are Grades 9, 10 and 11 teachers, learners and the community.

Dave Thomson, biodiversity scientist from Phalaborwa, expressed that SAEON focuses on natural and environmental science. “We create confi dent scientists”, he said, “This will not only develop your skills, but this program adds to personal development.” SANparks also assist in creating a better future for children from rural areas. “They do it because they want to”, Thomson stated.

A motivational speaker, Samukelisiswe Gumede, told her story about formal education and why the scholars must be motivated to study further after school. “The power of knowledge is given to you and because of that - you must grasp it”, stated Gumede.

Four students who took part in this program presented projects that blew everyone away. Courtnay Davids explained the effects of low pH on Zooplankton, Luphalo Belu presented the public perceptions about water scarcity, Vutivi Baloyi conducted and presented a research of biodiversity in the Haenertsburg forest and Tebogo Mathye presented ‘Grazerous Deliciosus’.

At the very end of this eventful symposium, Tilly Baloyi, Circuit Manager of Phalaborwa, gave good response to SAEON from the Department of Education. “As the Department of Education, we pledge to help institiutions and schools to develop the kids”, she stated, “Let us do all in our minds to get learners educated and to encourage the learners to be the very best that they can be.”

They want to create scientists

ALGEMEENPHALABORWA HERALD Friday September 12, 2014 33

A: My naam is Mariné Schoombie. Ek is vyf jaar oud. Ek word amper ses.

V: Wanneer gaan jy weer verjaar? A: My mamma en pappa dink ek is partykeer te groot vir my skoene. Ek verjaar op 5 Januarie. My mamma en pappa sê omdat ek so vroeg in die jaar verjaar is ek baie slim.

V: Ek kan sien jy is baie slim. Is kleuterskool

V: Watse werk doen julle alles?

V: Wat teken jy gewoonlik? A: Mannetjies. Ek kan enige iets teken en inkleur.

V: Het jy baie maatjies? A: Ja, ek het baie maatjies in Magnus, Groenskool en Rooiskool. My beste maatjies is saam met my in Magnus.

V: Geniet jy kleuterskool saam jou maatjies? A: Ja, ons is net partykeer stout.

A: Baie!

V: Watse werk doen jou mamma en pappa?A: My mamma maak lisensies vir mense en

my pappa is ‘n prokureur.

A: Ja,

Ek wil my eie werk hê en ek wil eendag by ‘n kleuterskool werk.

V: Wat doen jy gewoonlik as jy by die huis is? A: Ek speel buite, kyk televisie, speel op die tablet en cutex my naels en tone. Ek hou

V: Waar wil jy eendag bly as jy groot is? A: Ek wil in Pietersburg, Nelspruit, Tzaneen, Johannesburg, Pretoria of in Phalaborwa bly. Ek hou baie van Phalaborwa want my

A: 24 of 60 maande.

34 PHALABORWA HERALD Friday September 12, 2014SKOLENUUS

Kingfi sher’s ‘Cross Country Run for Wild dogs’ was held on August 30 at the Bow Club and it turned out to be a very successful day. The day started with a rather smoky feel to the bushveld air due to a huge fi re in the Kruger National Park. However, learners were not put off by this. They were all keen to run the one, two or three km track and were happy when they were each given a ‘Kingfi sher United for Wildlife wild dog’ badge at the end. Despite running through the bushveld, the day passed without any major incidents. However our local CPF medic was there on standby to treat the wounded. Between participation, the learners enjoyed reading and learning about the ‘Wild Dog Awareness project’.

Kingfi sher Eco-School wild dog project was designed by Mel Owtram and inspired after an encounter during 2013 when a pack of wild dogs was found running free on a national road while on her way to school with her 2 children. The dogs were in danger from traffi c travelling down the road at high speed as well as from game farmers on the other side of the road who could have decided to eradicate the dogs while trying to protect their livestock.

Immediately an effort was put in place to try and recapture the dogs and relocate them to safety and over the following days many attempts were made to do so unsuccessfully.

However the dogs made their own way back across the road and into the conservation areas where they would be safe once more, but not before at least 2 of them had been run over on the National Road.

This whole saga inspired Owtram to write a short book which would then be distributed globally to schools where teachers can read the story to their children and have a soft toy to represent each character within the book. The pack of dogs gets split up and travels the globe individually telling their story before eventually regrouping and fi nding a safe home once more.

A number of Endagered Wildlife Trust (EWT) wild dog relate bracelets were also sold on the day. Kingfi sher wants to congratulate everyone who participated and ran for wild dogs.

Kingfi sher wishes to give a special thanks to the following people; Mopani Bow Club for the venue, LAC (the main sponsor for the day), Beyond 2000 for providing safety and paying for the venue, Two Mountains for the tent, Spar for the food, Coastal Hire for toilets, Morné Simpson and sons for measuring of track, all parents who supported and all the runners who took part in Cross Country Running.

SOFT BALL KIT: Foskor donated soft ball kit to the value of R50 000 to a team in Namakgale.

A local soft ball team in Namakgale received a donation of sports equipment to the value of nearly R50 000 from Foskor Mine on Thursday.

The donation includes nine gloves, bat, balls, kit and other equipments. The founder of the team Kwena Chokoe said the aim of starting the soft ball team was to keep young

people from the streets and keep them busy with sports activities.

He further said one of the boys from the team has been selected to play in Gauteng

province. ‘We are proud of Ranti Dikgale an U/17 player who is now representing us on higher levels,’ added Chokoe.

Foskor Corporate Social Investment administrator, Abigail Modika said she was aware of the hardships faced by many parents in the area. According to Modika, the objective of the donation was to instill

important values through participation in sports. ‘It will also increase the children’s physical, emotional and intellectual potential , promote mass participation in schools sport for a better health while receiving a culture of learning in schools,’ said Modika.
