Hello Division 38!
It’s been a little over a month since many of you have taken over your new positions as Key Club officers, and I hope that transition has been as smooth and seamless as possible. Even though the school year might be quickly drawing to a close, your Key Club duties are far from being over. In fact, many clubs are at their peak during the summer. Whether that’s participating in Relay For Life, holding a fundraiser for the Eliminate Project, or working the Kiwanis garden, I know that each of your clubs will find some way to better our community.
It was a great opportunity to meet many of you at the April DCM. However over the next couple of months, I hope to get to know even more of you through upcoming DCM’s and club visits. Another great upcoming bonding event for our division is Tacoma Rally (June 27th). Open to all members, this is similar to a “mini-DCON” that will feature a guest speaker, workshops, the coveted sprit stick, and of course plenty of spirited Key Clubbers from across the Puget Sound area. (Hidden phrase: Tacoma Rally). Though registration isn’t officially open yet, please start promoting this event to all your members!
Finally, for everyone taking AP or IB exams these next two weeks, I hope you all do your very best. Good luck!
In Love and Service,
Kevin Zhang

What is Key Leader?
Key Leader is a weekend experiential leadership program for today's young leaders. This life-changing event focuses on service leadership as the first, most meaningful leadership-development experience. A Key Leader will learn the most important lesson of
leadership—it comes from helping others succeed.
Participants begin by attending a Key Leader conference, which is a weekend retreat. Large and small group workshops, discussions and team-building activities take place over the course of the weekend. Students have opportunities to learn leadership skills that will help them to change their schools, communities, and world for the better. While exploring leadership in a whole new way, participants will make amazing new friends and have experiences they will never forget. Positive, ongoing interaction with other Key Leader graduates offers continuing reinforcement, encouragement and growth of leadership skills.
2013 Weekend Event:
Camp Crestview (Corbett, Oregon): October 18- 20, 2013
Founded in 1915, Kiwanians around the globe have one common goal:
To serve the children of the world. Kiwanis advocates this vision every
day by providing opportunities to serve for every member of a
community through Service Leadership Programs. Through these
opportunities, youth and young adults around the world become
competent, capable and compassionate leaders.
Key Clubs could not possibly operate without the help of their
sponsoring Kiwanis Club. Therefore, it is not only vital to establish
communication with your sponsoring Kiwanis Club, but it is equally as
important to maintain a strong relationship with that particular club.
What Kiwanis Clubs are in Division 38?

What is the ELIMINATE Project?
The Eliminate Project is a joint project with Kiwanis and UNICEF to internationally terminate MNT.
What is MNT?
MNT is caused when tetanus spores, found in soil everywhere, come into contact with open cuts during childbirth. The disease strikes the poorest of the poor, the geographically hard to reach and those without health care.
Who suffers from MNT?
In 30 countries around the world, maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) can quickly turn the joy of childbirth into tragedy. MNT kills one baby every nine minutes. Its effects are excruciating– tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. There is little hope of survival. And tetanus kills mothers too.
However… There is Hope!
Just $1.80 is able to save a mother and her newborn’s
life! See page 11 for ways to fundraise. Do you part!

Congratulations to Capital High School for winning April’s S.T.A.R. Award. Not only were they the first school to turn in all their officer contact info, but they also were the first to complete their monthly club update and the ELIMINATE Project survey.
This past month, they also participated in the Downtown clean up and recently helped out at the Westside Garden for Kiwanis One Day. Communication between the Lieutenant Governor and club has been stellar! Great job CHS and keep up the great work!

Did you club not win this month? Don’t give
up! At the beginning of each month, the
points are reset to zero and everyone once
again has an equal opportunity to win an
award. Remember, the club with the most
number of awards (see left) by DCON 2014 will
have first choice of seats within our division.
Keep working hard and who knows, next
month’s S.T.A.R. award might just be yours!
Shining Stars!
In addition to the monthly S.T.A.R. Award, the following clubs also stood out from the rest!
Olympia and Timberline
This last past Saturday (May 4th), both the Olympia High School Key Club and the Timberline High School Key Club participated in Kiwanis One Day. They helped the Olympia Kiwanis Club at the Capital Campus Garden to weed and plant a variety of organic vegetables. Come this fall, all the vegetables will be donated to the local Thurston County food bank. Not only did the two clubs work together to better the community, they also got to interact with their sponsoring Kiwanians. But the work isn’t done yet. Throughout the summer, clubs will have the opportunity to help continue weed, maintain, and eventually harvest all the crops. Contact either Don Leaf ([email protected]) or Derek Valley ([email protected]) to see how your club can participate!
