Message from the DNE

Hello Division 12 West!

Summer is finally here! Although school is over (and the summer heat makes us sluggish), Key Clubbers are encouraged to continue dedicating some of their time to fulfilling a summer of service. For this upcoming term, I believe it is important for all of us to recognize and strive to accomplish the CNH District goals: ser-vice, leadership, and family.

If you attended OTC, Dancin' on the Avenue, or ICON, or if your club has completed any recent service projects or fundraisers, I would appreciate it very much if you take the time to contribute articles and/or visuals! If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

I hope you enjoy the first division newsletter of the new term, and I look forward to serving Division 12 West!

In service, Emily Nguyen

He l lo fe l low Spartans ! Welcome to the FIRST division newsletter for the 2014-2015

Key Club year! For those of you who have not heard of me

yet, my name is Tyra Saelee and I am honored to say that I

am serving as the 2014-2015 Lieutenant Governor for Division

12 West. I’m currently an incoming senior at Leigh High

School and have been in Key Club since my freshman year.

Some of my goals for this term include increasing overall

membership attendance at events as well as giving members a

memorable Key Club experience that they will take with them beyond high school! This I

hope to achieve starting with the upcoming June 21st Officer Training Conference, which

will also be where the June Division Council Meeting will be held. We had a great turnout

for the May Division Council Meeting, and I aim to keep that streak going!

As you flip through the contents of this newsletter, I hope you will all find this BEEautiful issue

full of helpful information for you to take back to your clubs. Though summer is finally here,

Key Club is still going on strong! I encourage all of you to keep on doing what Key Clubbers

do best - serving our home, school, and community. Take advantage of your resources -

technology is all around us! Search up new and fun ideas for service projects, or simply ask

a friend. Don’t forget to submit club articles and visuals to our Division News Editor as well so

that your club may be showcased in the next Division newsletter!

Once again, always feel free to contact any of us on the Division Leadership Team for

whatever you may need. Whether it is advice for a service project, help on filling out a

form, or simply just to talk, don’t be afraid to reach out! We are here to serve YOU. With

that, I hope to see all of you soon, and have a BEEautiful day!

With the fighting spirit of service,

Tyra Saelee

Division Leadership Team Introduction

Hello Key Clubbers!

My name is Madison Tomihiro and I am excited to say that I will be serving as

your Division 12 West Executive Assistant for the 2014-2015 Key Club term. I

have been a part of Key Club since my freshman year and have enjoyed

every minute of it. This amazing and inspiring club has taught me so much

about myself and the impact that students like us can have on our commu-

nity. During this upcoming year I hope to inspire others to become more in-

volved in their communities and our division.

I have lived in San Jose my whole life and am currently a sophomore

(incoming junior) at The Harker School. In the past I have served as Project

Coordinator and Secretary of our Division. Outside of Key Club I am involved in my school’s Dance Team and

the volunteering program The Tutoring Network. I am also working on my senior Girl Scouts Gold Award Project.

In my free time I enjoy eating, baking, sleeping, and spending time with my family and friends. I have one

younger sister who will be a freshman and key club member next year.

Some of my goals for the upcoming year include increasing member involvement in our division, improving the

transparency between the Division Leadership Team and members, and getting to know every one of you

amazing Spartans! I would also like to help other members find what they are passionate about and help them

pursue their goals. I know that we can make this upcoming year amazing and I look forward to meeting and

working with all of you.

If you need to contact me for any reason please do not hesitate to call me at 1(408) 621-6680 or email me at

[email protected].

Division Leadership Team Introduction

Division Secretary

Hello everyone,

My name is Cammy Luong and I’m going to serve as your Division Secretary

for the 2014-2015 term. I have been a member of Westmont Key Club since I

was a freshman and I have enjoyed every part of it. I have served as fresh-

man representative and secretary and I am currently the president of West-

mont Key Club. Key Club has become a huge part of my life and has devel-

oped my skills in leadership and in socializing. I love meeting new people

and working with Key Clubbers and the Kiwanis.

For my personal life, I was born in California, and I’m currently residing in Los

Gatos. I live with my parents and little sister (who is an incoming freshman).

For school, I like to play badminton and I’m in multiple clubs such as CSF and Ecology Club. I believe I’m at

most a socially awkward kind of person, but once you get to know me, I become pretty loud and weird. I'm

very hard-working and open to other people's opinions. My favorite events are the Kiwanis Special Games and

the DCMs. The Kiwanis Special Games is an amazing event where our service encourages the kids to have fun

and to work hard in the activities. DCMs are always fun since it helps us as a Division interact with each other

more.

One of my goals for this term is to increase member participation at Division events. Of course, I will need the

help of the officers to promote our Division events in meetings. I look forward to working with everyone this term!

If you need to contact me, my email is [email protected] and my phone number is 408-348-0093!

Again, I can’t wait to work with everyone!

Hello Spartans!

My name is Emily Nguyen, and I am the Division 12 West News Editor for the

2014-2015 term. This coming fall I will be a sophomore at Westmont High

School, and I am excited and honored to serve you as a member of the divi-

sion leadership team. At the beginning of the school year, I attended a

Westmont Key Club car wash. I had no idea what to expect, but it turned

out to be extremely fun and rewarding; we raised over $400 in donations for

The Eliminate Project, which saves newborn babies and their mothers from

neonatal tetanus. The welcoming atmosphere made me feel like I was al-

ready a part of the Key Club family. I am proud of my contributions, and I

learned that we can make a difference in others’ lives, no matter how small.

I was born and raised in Saratoga. My favorite subject in school is math, and I enjoy puns and riddles. Outside of

Key Club, I am on the school tennis team and badminton team, and I play piano. I have taken piano lessons

since I was six years old, and I play at a senior citizens’ home twice a month. When I have free time, I like to

draw, listen to music, and look at art.

As Division News Editor, I hope to create newsletters that are not only informative, but organized and creative. I

would like to improve communication, increase awareness of projects such as Eliminate, and encourage gen-

eral members to attend division events such as DCMs. Unfortunately I can be quite shy at times, but one of my

other goals is to improve my social skills and connect with other Key Clubbers in our division. I will continue to be

involved in Key Club throughout high school, and I promise to put forth my best work in serving the community,

Key Club and Kiwanis family. I can be contacted at (408) 376-0772 or at [email protected]. Thank

you for reading, and I wish everyone a fantastic summer!

In service,

Emily Nguyen

CLUB ART ICLE

Ah, the last day of school. There are a lot of feelings associated with the last

day of school, namely the feeling of freedom. Two months to do whatever

your heart desires. On June 11th, I had the chance to go to Rosemary Ele-

mentary on their last day of school to help make it special. With the help of

several other Kiwanis members, we served hot dogs, carrots, chips and ba-

nanas to the students of Rosemary Elementary. It was a lot of fun to watch

the kids on their last day. Can't wait to do it again next year!

International Convention (ICON) is the largest Key Club

event of the year! Over1,600 Key Clubbers from across

the United States, Canada and the Caribbean meet to

celebrate all things Key Club.

At ICON, Key Clubbers share service and fundraising ideas,

elect new year’s Key Club International Board, and learn about

servant leadership. This year attendees also have the opportu-

nity to listen to actor and activist Chris Bashinelli, host of PBS’s

“Bridge the Gap.” The activities include sessions, workshops,

and so much more.
